The Tulleys Sporting Trial

- Sporting Trials is the ultimate development of a 2-Wheel drive car and is as unique as motorsport can get.
"Why bother with 2-wheel drive when you can have all-wheel drive or even 4-wheel drive?" Well, my friends, that's what makes Sporting Trials so special. It's all about combining momentum and throttle control to conquer the most challenging terrains known to man.
Now, we know what you're thinking. "This sounds easy. Just keep your foot on the gas and go, right?" Wrong. Sporting Trials is not for the faint of heart. You have to be able to read the terrain, adjust your speed, and choose the right line to make it up that hill. And if you think you can just power through the obstacles, think again. This is a sport that rewards finesse over brute force. You have to use every trick in the book to get that car up that hill.
Here are some clips from the event.

This seems to be one of the best motor sports off road, shady contraptions no age limits, vague safety and limiter bashing
It’s a great sport -
Sounds like a recipe for fun
Not shady, very highly developed cars, some now have inboard discs on rear separate rear gearbox, highly tuned engines to go from tickover to 6-8000 revs instantly and not big down.
@@migliaracer1 Lmao highly developed cars:):)
Ger 4 tiny wheels, basic differencial/brakes,Honda 1.6L and plastic body....what stuff you need develop????
Its not HillClimb racing where cars cost 100.000-800.000 Euros for example.
Typical UK thinking but i must say it must be relative cheap too!
Iam curious how much those things cost 15-20K Euros?
Just when you think you've seen it all!! Some people have started putting engines on canoes and driving them through forests! Amazing
This made me laugh way harder than it should have 😂
@@Mike-NP Same LMAO
Now thats funny shit.
@@Mike-NP same. Bravo, Carl turner
You should check out Ford and pig racing then...
Wow this is the most British version of off roading I've seen. Actually surprised that a break for tea and crumpets isn't hardwired into the trial
It is they just didn't show it haha 😂
@@tamylynn4935 hahaha!
I suspect it was stout and pork pies that day.
Ello! I say jolly good offloading
Took the words right out of my gross British tooth filled mouth.
As a Canadian who's never seen nor heard of whatever exactly is going on here, let me just say this is one heck of a delightfully bizarre and British motorsport! From the outside looking in it's like a bunch of farmer's in RWD Caterhams (I do watch Top Gear so I know a Caterham when I see one) with bicycle wheels on the front going wheeling in some other farmers back forest and frankly I AM HERE FOR IT.
Also a Candian and have never seen this. Didn't know what a Caterham was until you just now. so thanks
I think you have guessed exactly how it started.
And then there is the good old lawnmower racing comunity
So friggin goofy and wonderful.
Mate I’m uk and never knew about this
Man, this looks like so much fun. Thanks for showing this motorsport.
Yeah. I bet €100 I can get stuck & crash & drown simultaneously. And catch fire for an extra €25
Ikr I didn't know this was a thing, what do you even call these things? It's like a Caterham slept with a Dirtbike and I would like one...also instead of throttle control it seems to be mostly throttle which I also approve of.
its just so fun to watch! People doing very precise and calculated maneuvering and one second later flooring and yanking the shit out of it
But they knew precisely when to yank the shit out of it!
@@apancher of course! Yin YanK is the key to success. The perfect balance between precision and shit yanking
I fondly remember when these events were shown live on BBC on a Satuday afternoon.
They should bring it back me thinks.
I will never complain about wheeling in my 4x4 Jeep again. Those are wild! Great driving skills!
Ha you have a Jeep. 🤣
@@daggermouth4695 what are you driving
@@frankmartin3182 generally anything not made in America. Haha.
Nah i shouldn't make fun of your jeep really because you probably got a good one..
Some context.
For work I ended up having to speak to and put in multiple cases about some of the quality of the builds of the Jeep her in Australia.
I'm talking subframes falling out, and head rebuilds at 20,000km.
And what they told us in no uncertain terms was that yeah we send some s*** ones to you... soz.
So yeah they're probably ok you're one might not be a piece of s*** but all of them I know are..
So for that reason..
Someone Tells me a I want to buy a jeep I laugh and say get a Hyundai, ( because they're not going off roads anyway realistically.)
And their Hyundai or Toyota or whatever else they bought from Asia won't need 57 recalls in the first year
🤷♂️
If you want to defend Jeep I'm willing to listen
@@daggermouth4695 I dunno about Jeep but the most sold truck in the world is the F-150, then the Chevrolet Silverado. I know Jeep has had some serious issues with some models like Renegade and Commander. In terms of technologies, I don't know of a single supercar today that isn't using American technologies. Adjustable ride, magnetic suspension, aluminum and carbon fiber monocoque technologies... but uhhhh... yeah, I drive a German car lol.
@@philonetic321 you realise half the things you mentioned are 20 year old European technology.
The US literally gets everything in their cars that have been standard in Mercedes for decades.
And yeah the renegade and commander were fkd because Jeep sold themselves to Fiat, oso renegades and such have an Alfa Romeo guilletta engine,
( which is complete 🤮 )
And trying to get a Alfa ECU and TCU to program with a jeep driveline just didn't work.
I was swapping out semi autos that were stuck in 3rd or whatever gear.... after like 2nd service.
Also I think you will find that the only reason the silverado, RAM and all F series, have the number in the global sales is because there are so many Americans who just buy them without thinking.
Like no one here is going to buy a silverado, ram or f truck. It only works over there honestly.
If they buy those over here, I've noticed it's to make up for the size of their penis which isn't sufficient to satisfy their partner.
Now you'll find that the asian makes that are in the global sales figures have less recalls, less problems, and generally a higher saftey rating.
American cars are like an air conditioner, add wheels, if the wheels don't spin don't worry as long as the air con works. 🤷♂️
( that's what I've seen at least )
I've literally watch every single module in a jeep WK fail,
All of them ORC, TCM , BCM ,ECM and the other 7 or 8
... haha and the only one that works is HVAC which is air con 🤣
Like I've actually watched the jeep choose to have its Air Con compressor work, rather than the immobiliser. Watch the number all fault and default to lock its self..
15,000km ..
Anyway sorry if I come across as a d!ck. I'm just speaking facts.
But yeah same goes for here.
"Our " cars
Holden, ford.... pieces of sht
Oil leaks flat out, suspension ball joints like every month etc...
Oh and bmw and merc German brands are not great either
I've had 2 m3 e46's
Both rear subframes cracks (known fault )
All windows regulators followed by expansion tanks and head gaskets.
So yeah.. I guess. What I'm saying is I learned along time ago from experience is.... if you want it to start every day ... buy a Toyota , Mazda etc.
Absolutely amazing! Old timers across the pond like me, in our old straight-axle CJs can't pull this off! Love it!!
This is the second time I've seen this and think it would be a blast to be there to watch or even participate in. 👍👍👍👍
I didn't know this event, or these odd caterham-esque little off road builds even existed before seeing this video today.
Absolutely the style I'd expect from the Brits... and I mean that as a compliment!
Looks like lots of fun and still a ballsy undertaking, thrashing these little machines in the dirt. Probably a lot more affordable than the giant rock-bouncers people like to build here in the USA.
The Caterham Seven has its roots on these cars, since Colin Chapman raced trials.
This truly needed some Benny Hill Yakety Sax music to go along with it
😇
British cross cart at its finest, bloody brilliant!!!
First time ever seeing this sport & these cars... I like it!
It's pretty good isn't it.
This really is fascinating to watch, never heard of this before.
Thanks for watching -
Reminds me of going out muddin during lunch time when I was in high school. Looks like a great sport.
In my mom's Mercedes 240D
Yeah, walking late into 4th block covered in mud. They ask you why you are late.
"I got stuck".
@@letsdothis9063 Usually deliberately.
Used to see this on the telly back in the 60's on the odd occasion. I seem to remember the name Fack? Maybe dreaming there? Good to see it on YT. Thanks.
Wow I remember this from TV on Saturdays in the sixties. Didn't know it was still going on. My interests lie with hot rods so would not compete but would love to spectate if possible??? If not, why is it not still on TV not everyone gives a toss about bloody football 😠
ditto here albeit 70s and 80s....loved watching it as a kid back then
Footballs where the money is unfortunately ........ Boring.......
This is great, simple off roading! Well done and respect from across the pond!
In all my 60+years obsession with motorsport in all it's forms, I've often come across Sporting Trials in reports, but never before seen such well filmed coverage. As an ex circuit racer, I doubt that I would have had the patience to give it a go, but it looks like mega fun. It would be interesting to throw some old Dellows or Cannons into the mix, if there are sufficient survivors.
Thanks kind sir - I shot it on the Iphone as the weather was shocking and I didn't want to get my broadcast camera out (what a wuzz) - what was rather nice is that they allowed me to get close to the action -
Our oldest competitor is/was, I think 82, so age is no barrier - equally sex is not a barrier, its all about your ability to drive.
Age is only number...i see many times in HillClimb racing drivers with 70+age are faster then younger ones:)
This is great. Reminds me of sidecar racing. 😀
Glad you like it!
Looks like they can lock up each wheel like a brake on a tractor for each side. That's unique. Never seen that on a car before
It's a common feature on Trials and Autotest cars. It's called a fiddle brake (don't ask me why!)
That man in de beginning was going absolutely mental, i love it
Gotta love that 'traction control' 👍
Much perhaps on you guys getting out there enjoying yourself and your sport. Looks like the winner needs to have the biggest heaviest passenger that can jump the hardest. Enjoy
Such a gentlemanly way to off-road. I’ve never seen this before, but it looks amazing.
Pretty cool isn't it.
This has to be my new favorite offroad event!
Looks fun! Never seen anythink like this. The cool thing about having fairly smooth tires, 2 wheel drive, and low weight is that it gives the advantage to those with the most driving and co-driving skill rather than the most horsepower like other motorsports.
Spot on.
We need this in the us. It looks so fun!
I didn’t realize our neighbors Nextdoor had there own form of rednecks too 😂 - absolutely brilliant!!
👍 by far more intresting then mainstream race series...
Agreed.
Just get a Series I and go greenlaning 🍺
So many years since I have seen this, some sophistication now with the suspension being used.
Many cars have independent rear suspension now. Not always better, however. But more comfortable.
Looks like great fun in those conditions with the relatively slick tires. The same course might not be much of a challenge in grippy conditions though
All you do is bump up the tyre pressures and the grip disappears, makes ther Clerk of Course job easier
@@kevinjudd7343 so tire pressures are set for everyone by the officials on the day?
@@kevinjudd7343 No i think thats part of the skill in this sport, Knowing what pressure to set your tires for maximum grip for the conditions
But are street tyres a must?
This is UK winter sir. Mud is a given.
8:54 Thats your Wingman right there. Never give up. 100% commitment.
I really enjoyed watching this, especially when they started bouncing up and down for maximum grip. Made me think: have they not heard about off-road tires? Or are there limiting rules. Also looks like they are steering like tractors, braking only one wheel and powering the other one. Cool!
How did I not know about this motor sport until now? Looks like great fun!
Agreed
Very cool. Ive heard of trials riding for bike and motorcycles but this is very different! Looks like alot of fun!
Principles are the same. Lightness, agility, maximising grip, big nuts and a screw loose.
A more accessible form of the sport is Production Car Trials. Similar concept with sections marked out but generally held in undulating grassy fields. No trees to hit. You use your daily driver, get the kids to bounce for grip, get covered in mud and have a great day.
Looks a bit weird, but I like how they, despite lots of wheel spin, dpn't cut enormous ruts in the ground. Fairly low impact motor sport. Cool.
Yeah i thing its just for fun nothing serious like truck offroading or rally.
Road tyres
@@tomnwoo And they look very underinflated, probably to increase the size of the contact patch.
@@drewzero1 yes, definitely, some trials will mandate a fixed tyre pressure
Technique ! Technique! That is a crazy sport, got to love it. Have a pint with these guys would be great.
I don't know how I ended up in the room and but I will happily sit and watch
Another one for you Keith - ruclips.net/video/EG4bm1ifvvk/видео.html
Museum on the outdoor walking 😉
Take like with best wishes from Saint-Petersburg Russia!)
Loved watching this sport on tv many years ago.😁
Me too Bill -
I have done a few production car trials back in the 1970s but that's not a patch on these little beasts. As much fun to watch as it is to compete. The fiddle brakes (individual hand brake for each rear wheel) make for great manoeuvrability.
That hop @8:55 was legendary
Best thing I’ve ever seen! As British as it gets!
Very funny! I've never seen trial like this, amazing!
Very interesting vehicles and road/ tracks
I've always fancied a go at this, is 64 years old too late?
Never too late - check out their website.
What a great all around motor sport event!
This is the coolest thing I ever watched!
Lol?Rly?Then you not watch many videos...
One of the best kept secrets in Motorsport until now
I thought that I had seen most a types of Motorsports. This is a new and unique one for me. What's it called? The jumping up and down to acheive traction struck me in my funny bone. Hilarious & Brilliant!
This is the most pinkie out tea sipping looking off-road sport I have ever seen and I love it.. OOHH REGINAAAAAALLLLDDD, GOOD DAY TO YOU SIR, *VRREOOOOOOMMM**
I love how he jumps up and down back and forth side to side in order to get her up that hill. She coughs a little at the top, but don't they all?
Nice video ROMAN Ostrava Czech republic 👍👏🎥👏👍
I'd seen vintage British trials cars up for auction in the past and never had context as to how they were used.
this was awesome, how low is the tire pressure in the rear when they are running these mud courses and are tires with treads not allowed or these tires that they use are sufficient?
The co-pilot in these reminds me of the co-pilots in sidecar racing, jumping and leaning and bending to keep things stuck to the track or course
Thank you
So the regulations state which tyres can be used and they’re picked deliberately to be rubbish for the conditions. The pressure is decided by the Clark of the course on the day (the person running the event) and it could be 3psi (as it was on this day) or upto 10+ psi depending on how wet/slippery it is.
@@picklerick731 appreciate the reply, not understanding the why...
Why handicap the cars and drivers? It doesn't seem to be a funny race like the Lemons here in the US. Though it's fun to watch
Thanks
Watched this seven times now! .. still aint enough
How about this one. - ruclips.net/video/EG4bm1ifvvk/видео.html
I've never seen those type of automobiles before. But they look like a lot of fun!
Really funny...Racing...No age limit..skillfull offroad drivers...,would love to be part of it..
Come and have a go.
Your secret made it here to the U.S. and I love it. I now want to make one and test my skills
This is even more amazing when you realize that there are NO LOCKING OR LIMITED SLIP DIFFS. Open diffs only! My car with an open diff can't get across a rain puddle without getting out to push.
This looks like an absolute blast!
0:10 That is hilarious and smart in same time when he start jumping to improve traction and lifting rear car part:)
Relative strange/new motorsport to me when in my county we have brutal truck trials with 8 wheelers, that is fun too.
This is one of the most British things I’ve ever seen.
Some great footage here of some great drivers. Must get down to Tulleys in the JABS soon
You should!
Looks like a lot of fun for reasonable price
Brits are always having fun with stuff. Love it.
With the newsboy cap and the suicide knob! Fantastic!
Tulley is the most British word I have ever heard and this looks very fun.
This seems to be similar to a sport we have in the Pacific Northwest and New Zealand called Sprint Boat Racing in that they install roll cages in small flat bottomed jet boats, drive them through ditches with about 12 inches of water. Neither sport makes any sense to me, but they both look like tons of fun
Believe or not Charles - these little beauties have been off roading for over 80 years now in one form or another. I love the sound of the Sprint boat racing - I'll look it up. Thanks for your comment.
First time seeing this, so cool!

I've never seen this before but after doing bangers/dirt track endurance etc thisnlooks a lot of fun. Do these cars have differential braking? A few seemed to be able to lock 1 wheel while powering the other
Fiddle brake control on lever by the steering wheel to control each rear wheel 👍
@@petetandino9945 cheers for the reply. In the process of looking into these a bit more, definitely looks like a good fun bit of sport
They have a footbrake that does both rear and then two smaller “fiddle” brakes that do one wheel individually the same as toe brakes on a tractor or aircraft
@@highlandrab19 The footbrake only operates on the front wheels.
That's awesome. Trial bikes with sidecars attempt similarly slippery courses .
Ural would win..... cause 2wd
Looks like a lot of fun!
A serious finesse motorsport. A little bit more than sidecar racing. But what a great motorsport. The knowledge of your car & trust in your counter weight is seen at all times. Stupid question thou, what kind of rides are those?
Looks like so much fun
that looks like such good fun
I now need to own one of these little cars and I want to participate in this
Man you guys are always having all the fun. Cool 😎
Excellent video. Thanks from an ex-trialler.
Thank you Sir - pleased you enjoyed it.
Me parece increíble lo que soporta ese sencillo esquema de dirección, da la impresión de que se va a partir en el primer impacto con un arbol
I don't know what these little cars are or what they're actually meant for, but I do know I want one now.
This is my first time seeing this, but hopefully not my last. Wow that looks fun.
This looks crazy!
