PLEASE READ :It has come to my attention that people do not like the small cuts i made during the song. It was in no way me attempting to ruin anyone's experience with this video. The overall goal was for a few of the longer sections that i did not have any input on to shorten the length slightly. A few other reasons why i chose to do this(which is not something i do on my videos normally) is because i have been hit by copyright pretty hard on my channel. Being a music oriented channel it takes an IMMENSE amount of work, time and effort to avoid copyright. 75 percent of the time my uploads get copyright claimed (so no revenue pennies for me) and each time i upload i have to cross my fingers i dont get a copyright STRIKE (3 of those and your channel gets banned permanently). This is the reason why on some reactions from other reactors the video is flipped backwards, or cut and edited. And a HUGE part of why channels start patreons and channel memberships. I have neither of those things and almost 6 months of me being "monetized" i have made a grand total of 103 dollars on RUclips. So again i didn't intend to RUIN anyone's experience of this video in the hopes that what was gained from this was 1)my insight on Danny 2) enjoying the song from Danny's perspective and 3)that my GENUINE and authentic reaction was captured in spirit for the entire video. Again i am sorry and all i ask is that you give my channel a chance because I have a bunch of other things on my channel you may enjoy, and that you can always look forward to me IMPROVING with every video i upload. I try to upload as often as i can but all this content (especially my drum covers and compositions) are a full days worth of work, and i have to juggle being a FULL TIME graduate student, and health concerns that i have to deal with the Veterans Affairs about often.
Video explanation about all of this and my channel expectations*important*

Hey great message! Don't sweat it bud, I don't feel it ruined the experience. Tool fans can be a little fussy sometimes 😆 but they mean well. All good ✌🏻
Thank you so much for your reassuring words here...
@@DrumlionMusic Hey my pleasure. Thank YOU for the great content ✌🏻
I'm going to be honest, I read the 1st 3 sentences and skimmed through the rest. However, that was enough to get the jist of it. For whatever it's worth, I say that you should do you. Narrate your videos in whatever way feels natural and that presents the least resistance to expressing the totality of your thoughts.
It really isn't necessary to attempt to fulfill the wants of viewers. Aside from that being an entirely quixotic endeavor, you're doing fine as is. You do you boo boo.
Spiral out, keep going
This is your channel bro. Do as you need, a lot of support still for you!
I never understood why someone would watch reaction videos, and get mad at the reactions. I appreciate the insight you and others make, keep up the good work!
Thats social media for you.. Im grateful for your words
Agreed 💯
...you don't understand why someone would take issue with how someone reacts to something? You sure that's what you meant?
Not to say Drumlion does a bad job at all! haha but c'mon, some reactions are pretty boring. Some are irritating. Some are pathetic. Some are so ignorant it beggars imagination. Some are ALL FOUR. XD
@@wilder11All true but the ironic thing is most people criticizing reaction videos don't have the balls or emotional fortitude to make one of their own.
@@jamesb0255 That really has no bearing on the issue. haha Some don't have the balls. Some don't have the time. Some just aren't interested. Some don't have the talent.
Welcome to public discourse. It's rather unequal, who'd have thought?
I’ve probably watched over 40 reactions to this and yours is one of my favourites by far! Yes we come to hear what the person reacting has to say so no need to apologize for talking at any point. Great explanations of some of what Danny is doing in laymen’s terms for those of us who just enjoy music. Excellent job!
I really appreciate this more than you know... I may not get everything right, but I try my best to offer what insight I can, and be as authentic as possible. I also have no problems with asking other people for help when trying to figure out something. I enjoy learning from all of you as well.
@@DrumlionMusic You’re welcome! I just like hearing people’s opinions of things I enjoy as well and do so in an intelligent manner. Keep doing what you’re doing!
I was pretty much going to say the same.
Great reaction video.
Only 40? Amateur. hahaha My son just giggles when he walks by and I'm watching again.
Agreed, no need for the man to aplogize, I'm here to gain a little perspective from a drummer just to help me understand it a little better.
Best reaction vid I’ve seen of this, and I’ve watched em all! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
You are so right-on when you said that this is less a traditional "song," and more of an experience. It's a mesmerizing, hypnotic, trance-inducing, musical experience. Kudos to your reaction style and comments, they were thoroughly enjoyed by me.
Thanks so much for this comment!
I love Danny Carry’s odd time and drum fills… He’s really a genius and also love the way his drums are tuned..
I've watched too many reactions to this video to count, but this one was super interesting. To hear the insight of someone who is obviously a highly knowledgeable drummer who can appreciate on another level what Danny and TOOL are doing is especially enjoyable.
Im so glad to hear this! Thank you so much for your words! I always wonder whether or not im talking to much sometimes in these videos
Just know I came to like it but you got 69 and I'm 45 with the mental capacity of a 13 year old hahahahah
Well my wife would say that innaways hahahaha
First time I ever heard and heard of meshugga was when they opened for Tool back in 01’ I think. Saw them in Long Beach. It was a homework assignment for music class to see a live performance and count time signatures
I am so obsessed with this video, I don't know how many times I've watched it - plus pretty much every reaction out there too! I love watching people's expressions when they're like "damn this was incredible!" I will leave it to more experienced Tool fans to recommend what to listen to next. My personal favourites at the moment are Vicarious, The Pot, and Sober, and Pnuema of course! Great reaction 🖤🖤🤘🏼🤘🏼
I really appreciate this more than you know... I may not get everything right, but I try my best to offer what insight I can, and be as authentic as possible. I also have no problems with asking other people for help when trying to figure out something. I enjoy learning from all of you as well.
I so agree
Me too
Can't believe people are still just finding Tool. Especially experienced musicians.
Excellent reaction and breakdown of this drumming part! I don't even know how many times I've watched that video, definitely one of my favourite songs by Tool. One of the greats, Danny is an absolute machine.
Thank you so much my friend! Good to see you as always
Danny is an octopus. So talented, along with the band.
i always hear that danny is the center of tool... and while i more or less can undersand where people come from when they say that i also take into consideration how unbelievably talented adam and justin are. their unique and unbelievable talents bring out the best in danny. then you have maynard that comes in and makes the phenomenal musicianship of his partners seem even more surrreal.
This is PRECISELY what I meant in my closing thoughts regarding the amazing next level, high-level musicianship they all have.
You gained a subscriber out of me based off this video. Your breakdowns are fantastic and you have actual interesting stuff to say while using terms non drummers but music fans can still understand.
Im so thankful for your words and your support! This really means alot to me!
Ambience and Atmosphere. Yessir.
The first time I saw Tool play was in 1992 opening for Gwar at the Hollywood Paladium. I believe The Melvins played that night as well. I had never heard of them before that night and everyone of my friends commented on how much they liked Tool that night. I've been a fan since that night and have seen them play many times. It's been an amazing journey and the music never sounds dated or old. The songs and the story they tell are still relevant and poignant to this day. Simply amazing.
I'm not a musician but I am a music lover! I like watching drummers, guitarists, voice coaches do reaction videos because it illuminates whats going on behind what I'm hearing and enjoying. I may not understand some of the terminology but I still get a sense of whats actually happening! Amazing stuff!!
18:00
Thanks for pointing out the rhythm pattern for the ride cymbal. I had never noticed that It’s a continuation of what he was doing earlier on the tambala. You’re the first person I’ve seen point that out. Awesome react, dude.
Their entire discography is magical, you can't pick a bad one in my opinion. Great reaction btw, really enjoyed your take on it!
Thanks so much for this!
It takes a drummer to properly headbob to this.
LMAO
@@DrumlionMusicI'm the exception.😂 Danny just plays those drums like they part of his body. He is amazing. They all are just so f'n talented & creative.
Lol they are ALL. ..I blame the edible. 😁
Good job on reacting and analyzing. Will watch more, keep em coming
This is a great reaction. Thank you for taking the time to explain stuff for those of us who are not drummers. I don't get why anyone would be upset by the cuts or by you talking. That is the point of a reaction video and we all know what happens with copyright violations. Thanks again. I'll be searching for some other Tool reactions from you. ^__^
Been listening to tool since 96
Awesome Job!!!! Thanks for your great insight!!!
Good reaction 🤣. The octopus is supernatural! 👽🖖✌
Truly enjoyed your drummer insight to this! Bravo Zulu!
yo this video evokes a response fro0m EVERYONE! good stuff!
The reason why people watch reaction videos is not for your insights, it is to live vicariously through you. Listening with someone who has never heard the song, and get to experience that first amazing reaction with you. I’ve seen this video a hundred times through different reaction videos, and the joy is listening to the whole song with a person who’s mind is being blown.
Great analysis, man! I've watched a bunch of reaction videos to this drum cam footage, and I think that yours is one of the most enjoyable. It's really fun hearing all the things that you pick up as a drummer. Thanks for posting!
Thanks so much for this really supportive comment. This comment section has been interesting. Its been full of very supportive people, and then also people that hate that i made edits. Its been crazy.
@@DrumlionMusic From what I've heard, the feedback is just like what you described. It's a tough call. I always think that trying to please the picky people is a losing game. I appreciate your musical analysis, but perhaps that is because I am also a musician. I'm not sure about this. I say just do the style that brings you the most joy. That joy you feel carries right into the vibe of your video! Best wishes for you! I think you will do very well with these videos.
TOOL IS 🔥🔥🔥🔥
It’s very refreshing to hear a breakdown of an amazing song, from such an intellectual/intelligent viewpoint. Your efforts and experience are very much appreciated. Thank you, sir. May God please bless you and your efforts.
Descending is my favorite Tool song.
The polyrhythms embody the divine.
haha I like how you put this
thank you so much for this reaction - was hoping, but the timing worked out to make my day end great!
Im so glad you enjoyed it and didn't get annoyed by my talking points in the video lol!
Loved between 4:45 & 5:05 you were like "Oh wait... what?"
Great reaction! 😎
"Forty Six and 2", "Rosetta Stoned" and "Ticks and Leaches" are great examples of Danny being... Well... Danny
yep, never really thought of it when commuting home from work today listening to TOOL. the 10,000 days album came on and upon hearing rosetta stoned i said wait a minute! that's the same "odd time signature" beat danny carey is doing on pneuma! LOL!
Thanks for your insights. Was a nice take on danny's skills.
Im extremely thankful for your words
Wow, that was an extremely comprehensive reaction! I am not a musician, but I understood everything that you said. Great job.
Im really glad you dig it!
to me, it is his use of dynamics that, is the part I love the most. starting with the rimshots, then the roll going into the second verse, and possibly my favorite is at the very end. it's all just so....musical. it fits the song, it adds to it without ever taking away from it. I read a quote from the producers of 10,000 days, and that was the word they used to describe this band. they went so far as to say TOOL is the most musical band they had ever worked with.
This is definitely interesting. Tool really has established themselves as absolute powerhouses!
The drumming in Rosetta Stoned is probably Danny's most difficult and mesmerizing drum performance
I will be checking it out!
@@DrumlionMusic I will also say the lyrics and overall vibe of the song is verrrrrrrry different than Pneuma or any other Tool song you might have heard
@@DrumlionMusic If you plan on doing a video about it the song right before it "lost keys (blame Hofmann)" leads into it and gives better context to the song
Danny, himself, said The Grudge is the hardest Tool song for him to play because he has to play so intensely and so aggressively for so long.
This was absolutely incredible! What are some of your favorite songs by Tool!
Bro absolutely loved 7empest from this album. But Parabol and Jambi were always off favorites of mine. Sober and Schism are great but so over played.
@@wescarr6843 im going to give the full album a thorough listen..
Live version of Sober. The complete Undertow album.
all of them
Pneuma, Descending, Schism, Parabol/Parabola, The Pot, Vicarious, Reflection... they just have too much great music!
echoing others, literally have watched 20+ reactions to this exact video and this one is my favorite by far. ez sub
This means a ton to me! Thank you so much!
Great reaction! You are spot on with it being 'experienced', rather than listened to. I saw them in '98 or 99', and '21 or '22, cant remember, in Aus. The tightness of the band, Maynard's voice. But it's the polyrhythmic beats from Danny, and a very loud live performance that reverberate sound-waves you feel through your ribcage that I remember most. It tickles the brain when you don't know you're being tickled. It's almost transcendent and hypnotises you into a subconscious presence. - Sounds like bullshit word-salad, I know. (unless you've been there:).
Hey. I've never did a "comment" on Any video on youtoob. But couldnt help now. You're awesome man. Ive seen this vid on Mr. Carey a thousnd times. Youre the first I assume is a pro. Yours truly, causul listerner. From Oregon and stoney
Yo bro. Nice job. Great videos. Drummers forever!
I appreciate this!!
I really liked your take on this. Cheers
Im really glad for this. I know I am not always right in some of my analysis, but I offer what I can and try to be as genuine as possible.
Tool doesn’t do songs. They do experiences. Do more.
Fully agree!
Shocked when i saw how many subs you have.
This was a great watch, and you clearly know what you are talking about musically.
I try my best. I know I dont always get it right but at the very least I strive for authenticity.
It's definitely out of body. That are fucking amazing
Dude, you nailed it. Very insightful analysis.
Im glad you liked it. I don't always get it right but i try my best. At the very least I want to be authentic.
Wonderful experience of the song with such detailed explanation 👏
Thank you so much top commenter!
I love the insight you bring to this video….keep doing what you’re doing
Thanks so much for this!
No way I loved the way you broke it down I'm no musician but the way you explained time signatures was awesome and showed your appreciation of his performance...thanks
Im really glad for this. Im not perfect and I dont always get it right, but I try to give as much authenticity in my insight and reactions as I can.
Danny is an alien. So good.
Always liked tool. But the first I watched and listened to this, I was like HOLY SHIT, Maynard’s jus a side piece 🤷♂️🤟
danny has the best beats of any drummer ever.
Great reaction thank you for the knowledge
Thank you so much!
20 min doesn’t seem so long when listening to reactions to this song. It’s so good, this has to be my 15th listen to reactions to this song and I still want more.
Ill definitely keep that in mind when i do more Tool
You're good bro. Excellent video. Understand your frustration.
Thank you for being supportive of me. I really appreciate this
I can't even imagine being the one who made this groove/song from scratch.
Enjoyed this reaction. Great work.
Thanks so much! Im really glad for this
Not sure how many drummer reactions I've watched to this point, but you're by far my favorite. You've gained a new subscriber and fan.
I hugely appreciate your words! Thank you so much!
I saw Meshuggah open for Tool in 2002 in Mississippi. Haake came out for a two-drummer set for Disposition/Reflection. Haake would use a stand up set of toms and a couple other things on stage, i don't remember. Great stuff thanks for vid 👍
He is working every side of his brain. I've watched this 10 times. I'm not a musician at all. This shyte blows me away. Danny rocks this shyte.
Liked and subbed.😀 Good stuff bro!
Thanks so much. Im truly grateful for your support!
My favorite part about danny's style is now often he mixes up the time signature. I believe he runs like 4 different time signatures throughout this song. It really helps those drums pop while continuing to compliment, and not distract from, the rest of the instruments. Add in Maynard's vocals on top and this song is a fucking masterpiece.
Loved the commentary bud 👍🏻
I appreciate this
I've been a tool fan for 20 years, and I've seen them live multiple times... I really appreciate your insight and perspective. First time watcher, and I'm subscribing. Glad to see the appreciation for an incredible experience
I am grateful for your support!
Good stuff man. You’re intuition and expertise on the drumming of this song and drumming in general was very informative.
Im so glad you go something out of this. I don't always get things right but i try to give it my best shot. Most importantly I listen to others that comment that may know more than me about music and i openly admit that I am willing to learn from them. Everyday is a school day!
Overall a great reaction 👍🏻
Saw them in New Orleans early this year and Danny is POWERFUL definitely a thing to behold
Thats so awesome you got to experience that!
Hey man, love the channel. Instant sub from me. You made an incredible insight around 9:00 about this track being an experience, about how rhythmic complexity can be used to overwhelm our inclination to count the bars, and helps us enjoy it purely for how it makes us feel.
I really grateful for your support. Im also glad this particular statement resonated with you too.
A song? it is an experience
I learn by watching reaction videos.
Such a cool song/vid. Loved your analysis.
I really appreciate this more than you know... I may not get everything right, but I try my best to offer what insight I can, and be as authentic as possible. I also have no problems with asking other people for help when trying to figure out something. I enjoy learning from all of you as well.
Very nice review! 18:07 I love that casual backhand Danny dishes out to that crash ^^
Haha the casual backhand yes!
Danny wears a basketball jersey of what ever teams venue or city he is playing at. He has a massive collection of jerseys.
Nice job sir.
Love me some Tool bro, such a great band
Facts
Bro, this is one of your best reactions yet. Because you didn’t just talk about what he’s doing, technically. You talked about the feel and how he guides you through the song. Truly some of the best Danny Carey analysis I’ve heard. You’re amazing at breaking these things down. 👌
I really tried to be authentic and to share my thoughts and insights musically as well as from as soulful perspective as well. I just hate i upset so many people about the cuts.
@@DrumlionMusic I’ve been bingeing your vids all day for a reason, my man. You give a great balance of technical explanation along with things that happen to your body physically while playing these types of songs. And you give just enough analysis that ISNT technical to keep guys like me along for the whole video.
There’s a lot of guys making these videos, but they often times use so much jargon and technical stuff that I get lost after a few videos. For other drummers, I’m sure it’s appreciated. But for guys like me that don’t really play drums, it’s a bit much.
Love your style! Xoxo
@@DizzyDez613 im really glad to hear this. Makes me feel like at least doing a couple things right lol
@@DrumlionMusic Yeah, I think you have a perfect balance. Enough technical stuff to appease the nerds, but enough other stuff for others as well. And you also explain the technical stuff better than most guys. I think most guys assume only drum nerds are watching or something. Lol
Anyway, I think I’m done my Drumlion binge for today. Thanks for replying to me 300 times. Lol I’ll probably watch more stuff tomorrow.
Oh, one last question; do you have much content of your own original music? Or do you have links to a band you’re in now (or were previously)? So far I’ve only seen covers and reactions on your channel.
@@DizzyDez613 so im working with some guys i used to jam with on a project, but i dont know when it will be ready because their work schedules and other obligations are pretty heavy right now. I do have some more original drumming in a playlist called drumming compositions where you can see a bit more about my style of drumming over some basic guitar and bass parts. Might be something in there you like. Its the same playlist that the track i titled "disavowed" came from. Fair warning though some of the older stuff in there were some of my very first uploads and all that stuff was recorded with my phone, and i was just learning how to mix audio and whatnot.
I think Danny is 58/59 years old here & I agree, Danny definitely looks in great shape, those "guns"!
Great reaction, your knowledge of the drums helps us as listeners appreciate it. Thanks
I really appreciate this more than you know... I may not get everything right, but I try my best to offer what insight I can, and be as authentic as possible. I also have no problems with asking other people for help when trying to figure out something. I enjoy learning from all of you as well.
Just found your channel. Loving the content so far. Also, love the Slaughter to Prevail mask you have!
I hugely appreciate this! Thanks so much. And the mask is definitely awesome. Such high quality as well
Funny you mentioned Meshuga . I watched them open for Tool in Oklahoma City on the Lateralus tour.
Great réaction really great ! And im a guitarist 😉 but we re all one! 😉🤘🏻🎸
absolutely no reason to apologize for the pauses brother. its a reaction video and we definitely appreciate your great informative reaction.
Thank you so much this show of support. I needed it trust me
I'm only 5 minutes in to this video and I already LOVE your reaction!! Trying to count....Hot darn...thisnis great!!!
Im super glad for this!
If you haven't heard of this band called Jinjer ya have to check them out. They are a Ukrainian progressive metal band. Their drummer is a classically trained pianist who picked up the sticks when his former band was in need of a drummer. The whole band is capable of just moving seamlessly through all kinds of styles and genres. Warning Tatiana they're vocalist is going to eat you alive oops forgot to suggest some songs. Pit of Consciousness live in Kiev or Home Back omv. Both songs are heavy AF but I kind of feel like they're showing off in a good way musically on Home Back.
Great insight 🍻 knowledge 🍻
Thank you so much. I appreciate this
He's just a percussion god😊❤
Human Octopus wins again! great reaction!
Danny is an alien.
RUclips recommended this video because apparently they think I like Tool. Sometimes I think RUclips knows me better than my wife! Huge Tool fan, I love to see people share the same appreciation. Great job here, I loved the analysis! It's ok to talk over the video if you have some valuable insight into the performance. If people want to find the uncut version, it's out there! Nice job, there's plenty more Tool out there to analyze if you so wish.
Thanks so much. Its exactly why in every video I do i link the original in the description. And yes RUclips and Google definitely will figure out where your tastes are lol
Really appreciate you chopping down the video I've seen this one so many times dude I found myself skipping through the drumming just to get to the commentary 😂😂
This comment is actually a huge relief for me. Normally its the other way around with people skipping my commentary! (seriously ill have to screenshot some of my channel analytics and show you what im talking about). I figured I would get mixed opinions about my decision to make short skips during some of the longer sections. I even noticed a comment that popped up(which he actually deleted) saying how i was good until i skipped a part of the song. And like i explained to someone else that commented here, RUclips is really really wierd in regards to copyright and the community guidelines so sometimes we as creators have to try different things to avoid negative implications with that AS well as the oddball algorithm. (oh and my video still got copyright claimed anyways). I never intended to "butcher" the song, but only to very briefly bypass the parts that were longer on length. However i myself watched the entire performance from start to finish.
@@DrumlionMusic yeah just skip the parts that repeat and speak your piece about the song. It's all good. LIKE ALL THE CREATORS SAY, if I want the video without commentary I can find the link in the description below 😂😂😂
I love you and will follow!
i truly appreciate you for this
The song opens with a time signature is 4/4 and the chorus is 4/4, then 13/8 followed by a measure of 5/8, over and over until he gets to his electronic solo which is 33/16. I saw a chart in the music store. The pattern repeats as the song slows down to the pace of the intro. Obviously, there are a ton of triplets and 1/32 notes.
This is a reaction video! ARGH! I AM MAD!
Dumb jokes and some commenters aside, as a fan of Tool for decades, I genuinely appreciated the review(especially mentioning the sound engineers(our unsung heroes!)).
To those being not so kind... Stop it.
Art is inherently subjective and someone shedding light on modern prog-rock is a glorious thing.
I appreciate this alot. Thank you for your encouraging words
Yes I keep looking at it and I wanted to tell I got my first set at 62 I’ll be 63 in October and I’m doing my best pick up on the language but I actually understood everything you was say well not everything but a lot.. I enjoyed your show a lot ! Keep it coming
Thanks for the insightful reaction, which we watch for your thoughts so no worries about “interrupting.” Danny really started displaying his chops on the Ænima album, so you might take a listen to any of those-Jimmy and Third Eye being two of my faves. Subscribed. Now to see what you had to say re Tomas Haake and Meshuggah!
Thank you so much for your kind words. I really appreciate your support a ton!
I'm not a drummer but your videos are extremely informative and watchable. Keep it up!
This really means so much to me! Thank you so much! and thank you for the really encouraging and supportive words!
@@DrumlionMusic No worries!
All those drums... What is this Tom-foolery ;)
My favorite drummers to watch perform their magic are Danny Carey, The Rev(RIP), Mike Portnoy, Austin Archey, and Joey Jordison (RIP). Truly mesmerizing musicians.
