After watching this I realised what I was doing wrong, while I could knit and purl easily by themselves. I completely didn’t realise that when doing a knitting pattern you had to bring the yarn to the front/back before knitting/purling if it wasn’t already, makes so much sense and also means you don’t get a load of extra stitches that are all weird and crisscrossing, thankyou :)

I’m glad this video has been helpful! I remember being like you when I started out knitting. I couldn’t figure how to transition from a knit to a purl and there was a ton of criss crossing!

This video taught me something I hadn't seen explained before - how to switch from knit to purl. I had tried to do some ribbed knitting before and ended up adding stitches like crazy because I wasn't moving the yarn from back to front between knit and purl (I think). Watching the motions you used should get me back on track. Thanks!

Omg me too!!!!! I had to simply practice and repeat to get a nice looking garter and stocking, so I thought I simply needed practice!!! You don't want to know how many times I tried to rib before I watched this and realized I wasn't wrapping the yarn back around to set up the switch. It results in a random distribution of stitches around the needle rather than a nice row.

I’m immunocompromized and my mom has cancer, so I’m basically in lockdown until a vaccine is ready or the virus gets me. These videos help quite a bit. I may not be able to be as productive, but I can knit. I can donate some winterwear and someone somewhere will not be as cold. It gives me time to improve as well!
I kept having an issue with this. I was getting two strands of yarn over the needle as the stitch for my knit stitches. Thanks to your presentation I realized my mistake.
People mention how you move the yarn forward for the purl stitch. But they don’t usually say, “for knit stitch, you move it BACK.” So I was wrapping an extra half rotation without realizing it. Because it’s just purls and knits, many people kind of fly by the demo, assuming since you know how to do both if you attempt this, that the details of what exactly is going on aren’t important.
Things like that are often what trip me up. I have no one to teach me, no family to get help from, no knitting group, nothing. Just videos. And they tend to leave out things that are easily explained, in person. Little details can derail the whole thing. But they’re important. Things like this, or not being able to start purling if you do a quick cast on, they can make people so frustrated that they give up. It’s not that they suck, but that their info... it’s not wrong, but it’s incomplete.
Thank you for SHOWING what you’re doing, and doing so slowly. It’s much appreciated.

I NEED TO TELL YOU MY MISTAKE WHILE LEARNING 1X1 RIB STITCH LIKE A FEW MONTHS AGO
So I'm still new to knitting but I successfully made a bag with 3 patterns sew together which is purse stitch, "1X1 rib stitch" and a moss stitch(handle is just english knit)
SO I LEARNT ALL OF THIS FROM YOUR CHANNEL IS SO HELPFUL
so I was doing as you said row 1 perfect nothings go wrong
But BEGAN WITH ROW 2 AND SO ON I hear you said *knit the knits, purl the purls*
So I thought "maybe she meant when you knit in the first row you knit it and purl the ones you purled" SO I DID THAT
And when I was learning moss stitches,I thought "why does this look familiar when you also show me the seed stitches"
RN I JUST REALIZED "OH CRAP I JUST ACCIDENTALLY LEARNT SEED STITCH BECUZ OF THAT MISTAKE"
So that's why when I said 1X1 rib stitch I putted " on it becuz its an accidental seed stitch I mistakenly learnt

I struggled following this until I realized I was using a different cast on method where you only loop the working yarn over the needle. It worked for basic knit stitch/purl stitch/stockinette on every row but when I tried ribbing, the last row of the stitch wouldn't tighten on itself so I ended up with a very loose thread when I purl/knit the last row. Would love an explanation on how the cast on affect the knitting.

For any rib stitch (1x1 or 2x2), you knit the knits and purl the purls. For a stitch like seed stitch you would knit the purls and purl the knits. So whether you knit or purl really depends on the stitch pattern you’re trying to knit! Hope that helps!

How is the K1P1 for 1x1 rib any different than odd seed stitch (aside from the last stitch being a knit in seed stitch)? But from what I understand it becomes different with what you do in the second row?

from what I can tell, with seed, you knit the purls and purl the knits, with rib it's viceversa. I'm doing a seed stitch project now so that's what I've noticed.

Can i just knit with double pointed needles

  • @ReynaArthur

What I don’t understand is that when she turns her needle around to start the second row, she has the same stitch that she started with. But every time I start with one, I turn it around and it looks like the opposite stitch. So what do I do then?

    • @sheepandstitch
      @sheepandstitch  7 месяцев назад

I cast on an even number of stitches, so my last stitch is a purl stitch. When I turn my needle around it is a knit stitch (because the back of a purl is a knit and vice versa). I’ll guess that you have an odd number of stitches. This is ok! Just follow the instructions and knit the knits and purl the purls after knitting your first row. If you start with a purl stitch, that’s ok. Just purl it. If you start with a knit stitch, then knit it. I hope that makes sense!

Ah I was missing the step of brining the yarn over for the pearl stitch before knitting it. It resulted it crossed stretches that made no sense when getting to the second row. That’s fit clarifying this.

I have tried this pattern I don’t know how many times! It never turns out. As far as I know I do all the stitches correct but I never get the ribbed look? I took a photo but can’t figure out how to attach it.

Are you knitting the knits and purling the purls? That’s the most common mistake

Hi! You start with a cast on to get the yarn onto the needles: ruclips.net/video/1vm6oaYzHyA/видео.html hope that helps!

This video needs clarification. According to the written pattern on the 1X1 first row is k1 p1 until the end. Then subsequent rows knit the knits and purl the purls but in the video the second row you start out as a k1 when it should be p1. Am I wrong in stating this?

    • @sheepandstitch

The first stitch is a knit because the first stitch is a knit stitch. The idea is after the first row, knit the knits and purl the purls. If you end with a purl stitch on row 1, then flipping the needle over, your first stitch on row 2 will be a knit stitch. Try it out!

I have a question (I'm absolutely new to knitting) - I'm knitting a scarf and was wondering if I can switch from 4x4 rib (about 60 rows of rib knit) to another stitch (2x2 rib, seed stitch or stockinette) for 30 rows and then back to the 4x4 rib stitch? Is it possible to do that without ruining the scarf i.e having a wider middle part than the ends?

I need help! I'm confused with this pattern that has 38 stitches per row, with a 2x2 rib. when I knit, I don't see any knit stitches even though I know I have knit. But this means at the end of the row, I have to knit 2 since 38 isn't divisible by four. I don't know why I can't see the knits, can any one help?

1*1 rib is same as seed knit !! Since I did this knit and I am getting a seed pattern. When I checked your seed knit video it's the exact same knitting. I am confused.
