After watching this I realised what I was doing wrong, while I could knit and purl easily by themselves. I completely didn’t realise that when doing a knitting pattern you had to bring the yarn to the front/back before knitting/purling if it wasn’t already, makes so much sense and also means you don’t get a load of extra stitches that are all weird and crisscrossing, thankyou :)
I’m glad this video has been helpful! I remember being like you when I started out knitting. I couldn’t figure how to transition from a knit to a purl and there was a ton of criss crossing!
This video taught me something I hadn't seen explained before - how to switch from knit to purl. I had tried to do some ribbed knitting before and ended up adding stitches like crazy because I wasn't moving the yarn from back to front between knit and purl (I think). Watching the motions you used should get me back on track. Thanks!
Omg me too!!!!! I had to simply practice and repeat to get a nice looking garter and stocking, so I thought I simply needed practice!!! You don't want to know how many times I tried to rib before I watched this and realized I wasn't wrapping the yarn back around to set up the switch. It results in a random distribution of stitches around the needle rather than a nice row.
I took you literally and knitted all the knits and all the purls on the subsequent rows. It turned into a sort of moss stitch. Now I know to repeat starting with 2K at the start of each row. Love your content.
Davina, you're absolutely phenomenal!!! I'm a new knitter, and I have actually joined a local knitting class at my alma mater. I was getting two strands of yarn over the needle as the stitch for my knit stitches. Thanks to your presentation I realized my mistake. People mention how you move the yarn forward for the purl stitch. But they don’t usually say, “for knit stitch, you move it BACK.” So I was wrapping an extra half rotation without realizing it. Because it’s just purls and knits, many people kind of fly by the demo, assuming since you know how to do both if you attempt this, that the details of what exactly is going on aren’t important. Things like that are often what trip me up. I have no one to teach me, no family to get help from, no knitting group, nothing. Just videos. And they tend to leave out things that are easily explained, in person. Little details can derail the whole thing. But they’re important. Things like this, or not being able to start purling if you do a quick cast on, they can make people so frustrated that they give up. It’s not that they suck, but that their info... it’s not wrong, but it’s incomplete. Thank you for SHOWING what you’re doing, and doing so slowly. It’s much appreciated.

Thank you for this!! I just started knitting and couldn't figure out how to alternate between stitches! Very clear instructions, you are a very good teacher :)
Hi thank you for this video it was very helpful, I know how to knit and purl but didn’t know how to get the rib effect, your instructions are very clear and easy to follow and the camera view of the knitting is perfect, I can only knit basic things like scarfs at the moment I am doing one all knit but wanted my next one to have a different pattern so I will do the 2x2 rib knit, looking forward to starting it now thanks for your help ❤️
This was so incredibly helpful! Could you possibly do videos like this for more basic stitch patterns? Especially the multiples needed to cast on, I get so confused!
Realized watching this I’ve been doing my knit stitches incorrectly lol. I was basically doing a kind of hybrid knit/purl and accidentally winding it through the front. Ah well. That project is a third of the way done and will stay that way. Will definitely fix it for the next one though! Thank you for the tutorial.
Brilliant! I couldn't understand where the extra stitches came from and why it just looked a mess. This videos was a massive help! I just need to keep count of the rib stich rows, as I'm not sure of an easy way to count it 😅
i was making a beanie and was confused about why my ribbing wasn't looking like in the video and then 10 rows in i realised i had been doing it all wrong... this video helped a lot tho thank you!
I struggled following this until I realized I was using a different cast on method where you only loop the working yarn over the needle. It worked for basic knit stitch/purl stitch/stockinette on every row but when I tried ribbing, the last row of the stitch wouldn't tighten on itself so I ended up with a very loose thread when I purl/knit the last row. Would love an explanation on how the cast on affect the knitting.
Don't give up! I cannot tell you how many times I have frogged my knitting! I finally can knit & purl after 9 years of looking at pictures, trying again & again. Yea You Tube! :)
I'm confused, when you finish round 1 you end with a purl. Then as you begin round 2 you point to the first stitch and say "this is a knit stitch". Isn't the first stitch of round 2 the same as the last stitch made in round 1? Are they two different takes?
The back of a knit is a purl and vice versa, so she purled the last 2 on the first row and then turned it around and that purl is a knit on the other side, which means you knit those first 2.
:0 i was being stupid and didnt think 4 went into 100, so i started freaking out thinking i had to cast on more to do the 2x2 rib on my dpns. this is my first project im making a beanie♡♡♡
I saw that you purled the last loop on the first row and then you said it was a knit when you came back around for row 2. I have been confused as to how that is so?
@@vorribleperson3731 so I figured it out. Do the opposite of what you just ended with. When you reach the bottom of your needle and do a purl then when you go back to the top for the next row do a knit and vice versa
does the ribbing only go up? as in you start with the length that you want and increase the hieght? or will the ribbing still work if i alernate knit and purl rows because im planning to make a jacket and the ribbing would need to be pretty long so it doesnt make sense ot have thart long needles
Is it really necessary to cast an even number of stitches for 2x2 flat rib? Couldn't you continue knitting the knits and purling the purls? I guess you would just have an odd one last stitch on each row. Does that make any difference?
Hi. I am re-learning knitting. When doing a rib stitch and using a selvage do you do 2 knits and then a purl or 1 knit 1 purl and end with a selvage knit however it counts? Arlene M
When you turn it around do the knits turn into the purls? So if I end the last stitch on a knit will the first one of the next row be a knit or a purl ?
I'm so happy I came across this video! It finally makes sense how to knit one, purl one without my stitches getting all weird 🫠😂 thank you - I'm a grateful beginner!
You say knit the knits and purl the purls for the 2×2 rib, but another tutorial I watched said purl the knits and knit the purls. Don't know what to do now 😅😭
For any rib stitch (1x1 or 2x2), you knit the knits and purl the purls. For a stitch like seed stitch you would knit the purls and purl the knits. So whether you knit or purl really depends on the stitch pattern you’re trying to knit! Hope that helps!
Why do some videos say that for ribbing when in the wrong side you have to purl the knit and knit the purl? It's like they switch for the second row. I'm so confused
How is the K1P1 for 1x1 rib any different than odd seed stitch (aside from the last stitch being a knit in seed stitch)? But from what I understand it becomes different with what you do in the second row?
from what I can tell, with seed, you knit the purls and purl the knits, with rib it's viceversa. I'm doing a seed stitch project now so that's what I've noticed.
What I don’t understand is that when she turns her needle around to start the second row, she has the same stitch that she started with. But every time I start with one, I turn it around and it looks like the opposite stitch. So what do I do then?
I cast on an even number of stitches, so my last stitch is a purl stitch. When I turn my needle around it is a knit stitch (because the back of a purl is a knit and vice versa). I’ll guess that you have an odd number of stitches. This is ok! Just follow the instructions and knit the knits and purl the purls after knitting your first row. If you start with a purl stitch, that’s ok. Just purl it. If you start with a knit stitch, then knit it. I hope that makes sense!
Ah I was missing the step of brining the yarn over for the pearl stitch before knitting it. It resulted it crossed stretches that made no sense when getting to the second row. That’s fit clarifying this.
I actually tried 1×1 rib but ended having seed stitch..... i am so confused.... then i saw your tutorial for seed stitch the first method seems the same... but when you do it looks different.... is rib 1×1 and seed stitch the same?? Or am i doing something wrong ??
I have tried this pattern I don’t know how many times! It never turns out. As far as I know I do all the stitches correct but I never get the ribbed look? I took a photo but can’t figure out how to attach it.
This video needs clarification. According to the written pattern on the 1X1 first row is k1 p1 until the end. Then subsequent rows knit the knits and purl the purls but in the video the second row you start out as a k1 when it should be p1. Am I wrong in stating this?
The first stitch is a knit because the first stitch is a knit stitch. The idea is after the first row, knit the knits and purl the purls. If you end with a purl stitch on row 1, then flipping the needle over, your first stitch on row 2 will be a knit stitch. Try it out!
I have a question (I'm absolutely new to knitting) - I'm knitting a scarf and was wondering if I can switch from 4x4 rib (about 60 rows of rib knit) to another stitch (2x2 rib, seed stitch or stockinette) for 30 rows and then back to the 4x4 rib stitch? Is it possible to do that without ruining the scarf i.e having a wider middle part than the ends?
No matter how many times I've tried I always mess it up somehow. I know what I need to do but I just somehow can't do it. Maybe I just need some more practice obviously this is a great tutorial but I just suck lol
I need help! I'm confused with this pattern that has 38 stitches per row, with a 2x2 rib. when I knit, I don't see any knit stitches even though I know I have knit. But this means at the end of the row, I have to knit 2 since 38 isn't divisible by four. I don't know why I can't see the knits, can any one help?
1*1 rib is same as seed knit !! Since I did this knit and I am getting a seed pattern. When I checked your seed knit video it's the exact same knitting. I am confused.
i have no idea why it doesn't look like a ribbed stitch, i have markers for every 2x2, i'm following the pattern, but when i look at the my rows, they just look like a bunch of nonsense stitches

Love the yarn you’re using!
great video .we enjoyed watching it super liked!!!
What y’all mean by alternating your stitches ?
Once the project starts to get larger, do the edges curl?
Nope! Rib stitch shouldn’t curl
Hey I'm trying 2x2 but when i trun aroud my work i got purl stitches please let me know what I'm doing worng
Thank you very much
what yarn are you using for the 1x1? It's gorgeous!
Can we have continental style 1x1 ? I don't understand english style at all
Can this be done the other way round, i.e. purl then knit? Will there be any difference?
(sorry I'm a beginner)
Is it really necessary to cast an even number of stitches for 2x2 flat rib? Couldn't you continue knitting the knits and purling the purls? I guess you would just have an odd one last stitch on each row. Does that make any difference?
Hi. I am re-learning knitting. When doing a rib stitch and using a selvage do you do 2 knits and then a purl or 1 knit 1 purl and end with a selvage knit however it counts? Arlene M
What's the size of the needle in the first example? I'm struggling to do knits so tight
When you turn it around do the knits turn into the purls? So if I end the last stitch on a knit will the first one of the next row be a knit or a purl ?
Yes! The back of a knit is a purl and vice versa. So if you end on a knit the first stitch of the next row will be a purl.
I'm so happy I came across this video! It finally makes sense how to knit one, purl one without my stitches getting all weird 🫠😂 thank you - I'm a grateful beginner!
How do you count the numbers of rows and stitches in ribbing?
You say knit the knits and purl the purls for the 2×2 rib, but another tutorial I watched said purl the knits and knit the purls. Don't know what to do now 😅😭
For any rib stitch (1x1 or 2x2), you knit the knits and purl the purls. For a stitch like seed stitch you would knit the purls and purl the knits. So whether you knit or purl really depends on the stitch pattern you’re trying to knit! Hope that helps!
hello! do you need to use double sided needles for this or can you use straight ones too?
You can use any kind of needles, straight or double pointed, to knit a rib. Hope that helps!
I do the same and I end up having seed stitch!! 😮 where am I going wrong!?
In what you can use this method😍😍🖒💘
Hi! You can use ribbing on the brim of a hat or the cuff of a sock. Basically, anywhere you need stretch, you can knit ribbing!
It also is a great pattern for making a scarf...I can knit and purl ribbing while watching a movie without having to look back at a pattern :)

Can i just knit with double pointed needles
Thank u a lot ❤
Ah I was missing the step of brining the yarn over for the pearl stitch before knitting it. It resulted it crossed stretches that made no sense when getting to the second row. That’s fit clarifying this.
Which size that needles and yarn on 5:53 did you use ?
Hi! If I remember correctly, it's Madelintosh Twist Light in glazed pecan, which I got on loveknitting here: bit.ly/2TlUXh7 Hope that helps!
i still don;t know why my rib stitch is looking like a seed stitch. Please help!
how to you put it on the stitch?
Tutorial nya tapi dan bening....
I still don't know what I'm doing wrong cos mines going diagonal despite following the knit the knits and purl the purls 😭
Are you knitting the knits and purling the purls? That’s the most common mistake
But how did you start from the start ..like the stitches ?
Hi! You start with a cast on to get the yarn onto the needles: ruclips.net/video/1vm6oaYzHyA/видео.html hope that helps!
Try it out!
I’m confused about the difference between 1 by 1 rib and moss stitch..?
I have a question (I'm absolutely new to knitting) - I'm knitting a scarf and was wondering if I can switch from 4x4 rib (about 60 rows of rib knit) to another stitch (2x2 rib, seed stitch or stockinette) for 30 rows and then back to the 4x4 rib stitch? Is it possible to do that without ruining the scarf i.e having a wider middle part than the ends?
Could do a smaller test project
Can you do 1 x 1 rib but 2 color? how? tia
i have no idea why it doesn't look like a ribbed stitch, i have markers for every 2x2, i'm following the pattern, but when i look at the my rows, they just look like a bunch of nonsense stitches
I was also trying this after cast off I ended up being a bead💎 upside down
It was a bit too fast for me a complete beginner.
