Biding his time for what. Casey and Beth stand to inherit the ranch as well as Rip because he's married to Beth. John save Rip from going to prison after Rip, as a young boy killed his stepfather after his stepfather killed his mother and sibling(s). John brought him into the ranch and taught him the values he has today. Beside, John asked Rip to take a dive when he fought Casey over who was going to be the foremost the ranch and Rip did. There were plenty of times Rip could've killed John when they were out alone on horse back. Rip could easily break John's neck and make it look to like Jon took a bad spill off of his horse. And even if he isn't getting part of the ranch, Rip Gaines nothing from crossing John and the rest of the Dutton family and everything to lose.

What John Dutton cares is not his life. Its his farm and the legacy it holds. John wants nothing more than to retire and hand it to his children. But none of his children will protect it after hes gone. What John wants is not someone to sacrifice their lives for him, but for the farm. And he knows that Rip is Loyal to him but more importantly, to the farm. Because to Rip, the farm was his home before John became his family. and what would come after? Saying that is the "endgame" for Rip. It couldn't get any better for him no matter what after that. You ever saw what happened to people who got rich early? who retired early? all of them asked "and now what" You can never put the last piece of the puzzle in, because if you do, it's not longer a puzzle, it's a picture. Rip can still receive something, he's like a dog chasing bone, you can never give it to him unless it's the last thing you do, before you die. Hope you see the point.

@@lad4830 You're making the mistake of looking at that issue from your perspective. You don't just analyze someone else's life, no matter if it's a fictional character or not, without putting yourself in his shoes. Rip is an orphan, until John took him in he had no chance to be anything in life and he knew it. The ranch provided him with a life opportunity that to him was a lifesaver, that is all he knows. He doesn't need to ask himself "and now what" after he does something substantial because:
      1. He has a hard enough time keeping his family's head above water already to add more commitments to his own life
      2. He never took on a "and now what" mentality, where he moves from challenge to challenge collecting life experience to help him achieve his next goal (for the above reasons)
      3. He never had a parental role model that instilled that mentality in him. He had John as a pseudo-father, but as we can see from the show, he never raised Rip that way.

    John: "-Guess not..."

Lee is obviously the child he misses, but which is Jamie and Kayce? I mean it could be either. He can regret how Jamie has turned out or pity him. Same can be said about Kayce, he pity’s what all has happened to him, but regret how he left things bad for so long. Which kid is which?

What the Dutton character intones in this segment is the socially obvious condition of "wild" and emotionally aggressive modern women, who suffer so little in the way of true consequences, for the wild level they "feel", and act out. Especially those on the extremities of beauty, as she is.
