Even though Samus is mostly mute, I like that she isn't portrayed as overpowered. She gets distracted, she gets angry, she struggles, and that makes it soooo much more awesome when she does succeed and beats the shit out of Raven Beak.

I agree with with Johnny on this one. I thought it was fine but played it way too safe. I still prefer her characterization in Fusion more because it showed more depth and introspection without coming off as corny and wooden like in Other M. Dread's characterization basically amounted to "What if Doomguy... but a girl instead?" which I guess is cool but eh... I expect more from Metroid.

Artwork shows that that Kraid was imprisoned on ZDR by the Mawkin soldiers which means he's been trapped on that planet since before the events of 2 and hasn't moved since (As all the Mawkins were still alive and the incident which lead to them being consumed by Xs took place during the events of Metroid 2).

So much stuff that people are still finding out like a special Kraid sequence when you flash shift in his mouth in the second phase to shoot missiles, or a special camera angle when you shinespark vertically into the Experiment boss... Also MAN the shinespark is great in this game, the puzzles LOOK intimidating, but I feel they are a LOT more manageable than the Zero Mission ones.

I'm admittedly bummed he didn't bring back the Screw attack guy. As for the game itself, I was already sitting on a lenghty metroidvania withdrawal (Bloodstained and Hollow Knight can only keep that at bay for so long) and my 3DS was busted so playing SR wasn't an option, the wait was a sack-twisting wait, but in the end it was all worth it. See the beginning of the Kraid battle where she just ignores him literally screaming into her face and takes a pot shot at him to quiet him down. I think they nailed her personality with this game. I know exactly why the spin boost was included. Because the sequence breaking in this game is so insane, the developers had to come up with ways to avoid complete softlocks when you got to certain sections out of order. So, the double jump was the "filler" upgrade for those that were planning to skip most of the other upgrades along the way.

I don't really agree with your theory since it kind of ignores that infinite bomb jumping is a thing. It feels like the spin boost just serves as training wheels for the space jump while doubling as a high-jump replacement. Just chiming in a few things, one, the cross bombs are actually worth more than they're being given credit for. They're a pretty strong combat item, and in particular, are far and away the best source of damage during Raven Beak's first phase. For anyone who's beat the game, think back to your first Raven Beak fight and how long that took, and then go watch a speedrunner or something using cross bombs on him. Your jaw is likely to fall off.
For two, there ARE different endings based on time, 6 total: 3 for normal, 3 for hard. They're just the different illustrations of each previous game, which at first I was disappointed with, but really I think it's good that we've moved past Samus in revealing attire being our "reward". Although, I wouldn't have minded if this game had an unlockable fusion suit as well (or metroid suit, even if it were just cosmetic, that thing was too badass to only use it for three minutes).

Yeah, god, I love the ending too. It's one thing to have the usual badass bounty hunter going apeshit and demonic and wrecking everything, but ending Dread with this level of ambiguous empathy and understanding between her and the X and the Chozo...it's just weirdly heartwarming. Saying "actually, maybe becoming a full Metroid energy-draining monster isn't everything and you should have some humanity too."
Makes me feel like you could really do something if you wanted to write more for Samus Aran. ...as long as it's not whatever Sakamoto was thinking during Other M.

i think my favorite scene in dread has to be the cutscene before you fight kraid, she's in full kill mode, sees kraid and just has that "oh, hey kraid, tuesday already" while she just casually strolls over charging that charge beam

Getting the omega cannon to take down each EMMI was essentially the equivalent of taking a double barrel shotgun and shooting the monster in your closet POINT BLANK. Though it was odd John didn't even bring it up

I got this game because of the praise that was being thrown its way (as well as Johnny's amazing hype overload during E3--that was so fun to see live) and it deserves every ounce of praise it gets. It's so GOOD. Everything flows so well in Dread and it consistently has new crazy things happening. There is almost never a dull moment and even as I type this, I want to go back in for more.
I am so glad to have tried this, because it finally got me into a franchise that I've come to really love.

Been looking forward to this one very much. This is my new favorite Metroid game, which isn’t saying much since I’m not much of a Metroid fan, but it’s still a fantastic game. Scary and hard as hell in some places, but the controls are so silky smooth when you get used to them. My only problem is that you have to hold the R button to use missiles. I would have like just to press it to switch them on or off. Can’t wait to see what’s next on the horizon.

A reminder that it was Raven Beak who released the X-parasites into the planet. The giant security door and the smaller door both closed and sealed shut after Samus went through them, and then they were standing wide open when she returns to them.

This game was something I was so so SO excited for. I saw the reviews and knew it'd be a great time but didn't expect to fall in love with it so much. It's also a blast to 100%! Between the fun Shinespark puzzles, the map telling you how many items are left in the area, Samus's overall speed making it easy to get from area to area, & the Pulse Radar for finding those secrets that are just out of reach, I never felt frustrated going for items. Everything felt satisfying to collect not because it was all that useful (I don't think I *really* needed 175 missiles) but seeing the number tick up to 100% felt so good. Absolutely fantastic voyage, I hope MercurySteam returns again!

Before watching the video I just wanna quickly mention how much I loved this games presentation. Most especially the scene with Quite Robe and the use of the Chozo language. If you listen to what is being said you can easily recognize that there is an actual language there with reoccurring words. And Samus speaking Chozo was just perfect.

    • @AzureMoebius22
      @AzureMoebius22 3 года назад

I find it very cool that Nintendo are capable enough to make an entire language for the sake of a series. Also interesting bit about the Chozo names. They have two versions. The names in English and the names in the Chozo language. In the latter, they sound like actual names. Not to say their English names are bad, to me they just sound like surnames for D&D characters.

I think Johnny's reaction to the Quiet Robe X is the same reaction I had with the SA-X that gets absorbed at the end of Fusion. I always saw it's interference as intentionally helping Samus against the Omega Metroid and, when it gets knocked away, allows itself to be absorbed so that Samus could have the edge she needed. So to me, seeing the Quiet Robe X helping Samus wasn't that much of a surprise.

I just recently finished Dread after beating all mainline titles from the past few days except the NES and Gameboy games, and my dear god, the journey from Zero Mission up until Dread was so damn satisfying! I didn't beat the games at a record time but I made sure to 100% all collectibles before I move to the next one. Metroid Prime Remastered was my first true Metroid experience (and yes I said Remastered, not the Gamecube nor the Wii version) and it lit up a fire inside me to finally try all mainline titles of this franchise. I can confidently say that I am now a new Metroid fan and I can't wait for the future that is in store for this game. Thanks for all of your Metroid videos Johnny, I made sure to watch all of them after each of the titles that I just completed.

What version of Metroid 2 did you play? I do still recommend going back to the original on Gameboy. It's definitely dated in terms of controls and presentation, but its design is pretty solid.

@@jacobmonks3722 Samus Returns, the remake. Yeah I'm impressed how a game in its era especially on a handheld could be that big. I made sure to play the originals of Metroid 1 and 2 on the NSO NES and Gameboy library after beating Dread, and I'm glad to finally experience them.

Yeah... But it should probably be mentioned the poor and sometimes abusing conditions the employees had to go through in the company. From mistreatment, random firings to straight up using made assets, animations and art but NOT crediting the person who made it because they felt that it was "too little of a contribution to be mentioned" so... Yeah, probably should talk about that
