- Most new knitters start by making a scarf. The first thing this artist ever knitted was an Irish fisherman's sweater. Both unconventional and frugal¬ - and always up for a challenge - he sources his fiber from thrift-store sweaters and then up-cycles the yarn into new items, such as hats and blankets.
Some might know this German Village-area resident and realtor as EJ Jones, others simply as “The Man Who Knits.”
My dad used to knit some lovely sweaters & cardigans, in fact he actually died with the needles in his hands bless him xx

Neither have I. I had sent off for some beautiful dark blue cashmere of 6 balls which cost me close to $60 which a great deal, but I'm terrified to use it or I just don't know what pattern to work with it. I'm more a crochet than a knitter,but I think that I should use it for knitting. I love your idea of going to Salvation Army or Goodwill looking for used sweaters.
This guy does beautiful work. I’m an auto mechanic, mountain biker, bbq’er, husband and father, i love learning to make things with my hands, and i really enjoy knitting. I Just knitted some booties for our expectant baby girl. Two years ago i made a christmas stocking for my son using my grandmother’s pattern that she’s been using for over 50 years.
I’d love to learn to make sweaters with all natural wool. This dude is inspiring.
it's been a year since so you may well have knit a sweater, but the flax sweater by tincanknits on ravelry is a phenomenal first sweater pattern!
My elderly mother has been recycling thrift store sweaters for years now. She makes everything from slippers to rugs. She turned 86 this year
No need to buy expensive natural yarns at the yarn store anymore-just go to a thrift shop, buy some wool shirts, unravel the yarn from the whole shirt & rewind into a nice big ball for any project at a very affordable cost-next to nothing for the cost of the yarn itself-a great idea for recycling & reclaiming the yarn!

My dad knits too. My nanna taught him, basically his mum taught him to knit in the 1950s when he was little. I have his teddy bear with a knitted cardigan on it he knitted for it when he was 6. 🙂

I am a male who has been crocheting since the age of 14. My first project was a purse I crochet for a classmate in junior high school. The purse was made from a old sweater. Crocheting is the one thing I enjoy during Winter. Thank you for sharing your story/video.
When he said natural materials like cashmere my first thought was wow expensive. Sweaters from the thrift store, what a great idea! This guy is awesome and his finished works are amazing.
I have been going to goodwill and Salvation Army for years, because I also love taking sweaters apart for yarn. I do not have a yarn winder, so I wind it on my thumb. Once you master taking them apart, it’s actually very cathartic.
I loved watching this video!! The fact that EJ uses natural fiber yarn purchased at deep discounts from thrift stores & then upcycles them into new items is awesome!

@@pkk639 Yeah, I think having something like a ball winder or maybe a swift helps, I think it also depends on the thrift stores near you.
You have to be pretty discerning when picking out a sweater to upcycle, and then it really just depends on what people are donating. I haven't had the best luck with this either.
Although, I have seen upcycled yarn on Etsy that's not terribly expensive, so that's always an option. This video though now makes me want to look for sweaters to recycle again. XD

Go on line and find a local knitting group that meets up periodically for learning, encouragement and snacks. Try your LYS. We’re out here, waiting for you!

My sons are 9 & 11years old and they love to knit and crochet. It's wonderful to show them other makes that enjoy knitting.
It's wonderful that your sons know how to crochet and knit. I learned to crochet potholders with plastic 6-pack rings in 6th grade and am still going! I taught myself knitting back in 2010

Hello EJ "The man who weaves", I like that name. I weave a lot for children, and I like to teach how to weave through videos on RUclips and although I do not recycle, I used many leftover wool in shoes, hats, scarves, berets, etc. I love your idea of recycling second-hand clothes and I congratulate you.

Reminds me of the good old times, I was 10 and starting to knit and crochet as taught by my grandma, and the power of the internet :) 7 years later, here I am, making stuffed toys, blankets, jackets, hats, scarves, gloves, and other wearables which look and feel good enough to wear :) What a journey
20 going on 80 taught myself to knit at 15 because I wanted a Hufflepuff scarf now it calms me

@@cmkar8830 I didn't see your response, but yes. The trick is to go to the consignment shops in the really good neighborhoods as they tend to have the garments made out of natural materials instead of polyester and acrylic.

How hard was it to learn? I want to learn how to make sweaters etc like my grandmother used to. I am semi-retired so I have plenty of time. What is the best site, YT page or wherever to learn the basics and what kind of set up do I need to start? Needles etc Thanks for any guidance
My mom taught me when I was little and it only took a hour or two to get the basic thing down. From that point on you can learn new patterns and those will be either easy or incredebly hard. All you need to start is a pair of sticks and a roll of thread.

Those hats are so beautiful and extremely well made. I knit too, and have ever since I was a kid. Recycling the yarn is a great idea.

@@kakexun nope and I'm not offended. I had 4 carpal tunnel surgeries in the early 80s and my doctor recommended knitting or crocheting as my therapy. The surgeries were related to sports injuries. Wasn't excited about it to start but found that it really is a wonderful way to relax and create new and wonderful things for my loved ones

you can redie it also I have done this when I could not find a color I was looking for I wanted a green-blue like the Crayola crayon color so went to my local thrift store(lastchancethriftstore.com)and found a white sweater that had a stain on 1 sleeve it was perfect for new socks. I have knit since I was a kid but this was my first pair of toe-up socksand yes my husband still wears them

during the Middle Ages, it was a craft that only men were allowed to perfect. They would spend six years doing so, allowed into guilds of knitters only after passing a rigorous exam. Professional, guilded knitters were responsible for an amazing amount of clothing well into the 16th century. Once the knitting machine was invented, though, it became something that men didn’t need to do any more and women could take up as a hobby.

I love the idea of recycling thrift store sweaters! I have just gotten back into knitting and nice yarn is so expensive. This is a great solution. I will definitely try this out soon!

My father taught me to knit when I was 5 years old. It's thought of as a woman's craft but in fact was originally done by men.
Your work and creativity is lovely and inspiring. I too am from Ohio, had a small farm there in Southington,where I taught myself to spin wool. We had some sheep, and I even had a friend who taught me how to shear them! It is so soul satisfying to take something from nature and create something beautiful with it. I do many crafts still,-spin, weave knit, crochet etc. And you're absolutely right, the desire to create does give you a reason to rise with a smile every morning. I grew up in Southington, maiden name was Wolf. Related to the Harshmans. I was amazed when I read your comment from a few years ago on making new creations from recycled wool. Just wanted to say Hi, hope you are still keeping up with the craft. I never learned to knit but think it is a beautiful skill. I will be 82 in a few days and this was a thrill to run across your comment.

This is genius, I would never have thought of taking apart sweaters for yarn. I currently only crochet (and I'm still an amateur), but I'd really love to learn to knit.
My father-in-law, a very “manly” man, knitted beautifully, tho not quite as well as him mom. Growing up on a n upstate NY farm, he seldom sat idle.
Same here my dad grew up in upper NY, he was one of 11 children, his mother taught everyone of her children to knit between 4 and 5 years old. Dad was always busy, at night he would turn on tv, drink a beer, smoke a cigar, knit. So glad he took the time to teach me to knit.
Knitting is art of love. I get lost in another world when I start a new sweater. Knitting gives you joy and wipes your sorrow. A knitter always in a hurry to finish chores so to have enough time to knit.
I love the toque(?) You made and it looks good on you! If you don't want the wrinkles in the yarn, skein it then dampen it and put it on a clothes hanger then hang a weight from the bottom of skein, it doesn't have to be a heavy weight just enough to stretch the yarn out to original state, and leave it to fully dry. But you probably already knew that! In my spinning and weaving group here in Tasmania we have a number of men who spin, weave and knit, have you thought of learning to spin? Keep having fun. Cheers!

So creative...making other things form old sweaters. Why didn't I think of that? Its nice to c men knitting. Most men dont think it is manly to knit and that it is something for women or old ladies in a rocking chair. Why cant men knit or crochet? Men are human why cant they be creative as well

Knitting
My grandpa was a 6’4´´ policeman who knit for his 10 children cause grandma had to much to do to knit. He was knitting in his police car on night shift... he did all mitaines, socks, hats, scarfs and slippers for his children and then grand-children. When he passed in 1990, my little sister was 11 and she kept her last slippers from him for 7 years... you should have seen the holes under foot. But it was her reminder of him.
This is so cool! His story and ingenuity are inspiring. There is no excuse for failure! Love, love, love this knitter man!

the big deal is its not common for men to knit/crochet/sew these days. it has evolved to be a womans hobby. but from what i read once upon a time it was a mans thing to knit. but its just evolved. also its a big deal because he shows us that you dont have to have a lot of money to take up thos hobby. go to the thrift store and make your own yarn.

I watched this in 2015, and started searching through Goodwill and reclaiming yarn as he does and making Christmas mittens for gifts from the wool. Sometimes I make a pillow, by sewing the front and back together and sewing it rectangle or square and stuffing it. Thanks for this video.

My granddad was in the Navy. He used to be able to knit, and he did so a lot while on board the ships. There wasn’t much else to do in his free time.
I'm 45 year old man I taught myself (recently) to knit and crochet. It's quite relaxing not to mention rewarding. I too look around thrift store and clearance bins. I'm not sure which hobby costs more brewing or knitting/crocheting.

this is just amazing! i remember when i first getting my hand on crochet hook. i was intrigue but later gave up. soon afterward though, i get myself to learn crochet again. i started with granny square. i looked up tutorial in yt and found bella coco's video. since then, i only crochet granny square till i get dozens of them. i was still in university then so money was a bit of issue. so i bought yarns from an old sewing shop at my small town during semester break. i remembered being calculative when i make the loop for magic ring! hehehe. now i'm still crocheting but more to amigurumi. that stock up yarn from old sweater trick is a lit. i'm gonna try get some from bundles.. thanks 'the man who knits'. you are such an inspiration!
Funny - the first thing I knit was a fisherman sweater, too. It was from an old Lady Galt pattern, which I still have (tho I don't know what happened to the sweater) and I was 14 years old. I like the idea of recycling yarn and I'm going to try it. Great video!

Snicklefarkles or crochet...loom knitting is faster than had knitting. and even the "toy" singer round machine knitter, new version, works great for hats!

thank you for this idea to reuse sweaters, I do a lot of yarn crafts and need lots of yarn. I think I will go to the store and get some of these and reuse them :)
