Dear Benjamin, 4 years later, here I am at nigh 80 years old & lifetime knitter & teacher of same to men, women, children, and all special needs. I adore stranded knitting and thank you for your choice of topic in your college course. I think everyone has critiqued you to pieces with your film making, so I will reserve my opinion. 😊 Best of all that is good on you, dear lad, in whatever your heart desires❣️👍🤗
Thank you so much, your words are very impactful and make me happy to know that people have enjoyed the documentary. I have learned and grown a lot since I shot this project and most of the critics are valid and I would agree with them but yeah they're a little harsh so I appreciate you not destroying my work to shreds. Haha even if it was deserved! I wish you the best of luck and hope that people learn to love knitting as much as you!
@@thebenjaminburtonThank you for your kind words, Ben. A new friend told me just 2 days ago that It's no surprise I am such a knitter...my DNA is so Viking, Celtic, Norse. My hands show the proof of Viking bloodlines with the frozen arched fingers of Dupetren's Sydrome. As long as I can knit & teach, I am happy.🤗 Bless you in your journey, Ben🙏
Lovely film... would’ve preferred without the music during the interviews as competing with the people speaking. Gorgeous filming. Thank you for sharing 🌿
Thanks Benjamin I loved your film because I love to knit and learning the history & background of different methods of knitting makes knitting mean so much more to me than just a hobby or craft. And yes, we all need to "Wise Up" Thanks
There is a beauty to something that has been hand crafted, whether its a good meal, a beautiful sweater, or a bar of soap. There is a sense of care and talent, that goes into each and every thing that is created by hand... a sense of that thing having been created, cost someone their time and their intelligence...something that will never be found in having something that there are millions of copies created on machines.
Beautiful film. Thanks for doing it and sharing I am an old granny knitter and found the background music and sounds made the interviews difficult to hear. Using subtitles was distracting because of so many wrong words. Fair Isle was always printed as feral. But lovely and informative film.
Such a beautiful film. You are an amazing young man! I’ve been a knitter my entire life, fascinated with Fair Isle. I want to live there!! Keep up the great work and always follow your dreams 🧶
Really great job. For reasons I don’t understand I recently became fascinated with Fair Isle. I was thrilled to find your piece. It was perfect. thank you.
Interesting vignette of Fair Isle - a place that has fascinated me and which I would love to visit. As that is unlikely thank you so much for this short doc. I did find some of the audio difficult to hear and while the music is atmospheric, overlaying it over speech was distracting. I so wanted to hear all that was being said. A lovely and much appreciated visit to Fair Isle.
Thank you so much for the nice comments and valid critiques, there’s so much that I would change if I could do it again. This was my first time taking on a project of this size and I’d love to go back and try to tell the story in a better way!
@@thebenjaminburton You did a stellar job for a first time project longer that was more involved than any previous endeavors. I am sure you are benefiting from this experience and are growing more adept at fashioning your vision for other projects. I did enjoy it as I was able to travel to Fair Isle without spending a penny or embarking on a series of plane trips! Thank you again.
Loved this so much! As a knitter, I am always thankful to find true explorations of the art and process of knitting. Thank you for shining a light on such a beautiful knitting tradition.
Superb video. Very professional and well done for making the journey there. I'm from the UK and very few of us even get to The Shetlands, let alone the Fair Isles 👏
Dude I can't even begin to say how proud I am of you this is you added to your first semester and now you're producing it is the end of your last semester and it is unbelievably Dynamic active dude there's so many ways that I want to describe and analyze that but you did such a good job man your mother would be proud I am so proud of what you've done Beyond I don't know what else to say man I love you
Thank you for this sweet tour of a place that I have on my list of destinations for my upcoming sabbatical! I so enjoyed meeting the people and seeing the place-so beautiful!
Benjamin, one bearcat to another, brilliant film! I put it on to watch while knitting, but couldn't knit because it was too interesting. :) I hope all's well with you!
This is wonderful. I love fair isle knits. I can’t believe you actually went. So cool. I looked into how to get there at one point too but you did it. Really lovely video. Enjoyed it so much. Keep going!
Hi from PDX. Was watching "the repair shop". They mentioned in a spinning wheel segment about fair Isle, that wheels parts would be made from wood washed up from the sea, since there's no trees there.
BEN!! It’s Desmond’s mom! I totally just found your channel by accident as I am learning how to knit and want to learn Fair Isle knitting. You go kid!!
I LOVE this video. It was so entertaining and instructive and introduced us to a part of the world few of us will ever see. As an avid knitter, a lover of Shetland wool and semi-skilled at Fair Isle knitting, I was enthralled throughout the entire video. My only comment would be to lower the volume of the music (or delete it entirely) during the interviews. It made it difficult to understand the heavy Scottish accents. Thanks for sharing your talents with us.
i've been to fair isle a few times, it's really worth a visit. and not at all so difficult to do as you might expect. if you're an artist, you might like to do a residency at fair isle studio.
My grandmother was a Fair Isle knitter. Beautiful knitter. She also knitted lace and crochet as well. I knit too so did my mum. Maybe in our Scottish blood.
This came across my feed as I get interested in stranded knitting - imagine my surprise to find out it’s a WU student! Go Bearcats! (JD 2008) Thanks for the video!
I lived in Salem for several years, and wished I’d known that Willamette Uni’s cafeteria was open to the public then! Willamette Uni had been the site of the Nwrsa yearly conference, this Uni is an excellent site for any kind of conference! Ben you did an excellent job on your video! Ne last thing REAL MEN KNIT!
@@thebenjaminburton what a nice surprise! Keep on knitting! When my dad was in med school, he had a college who had anxiety so bad he would pass out. Dad said he would walk into the Dr’s lounge and this guy would be in there knitting to relieve the stress. I have found that my BP goes down when I knit or spin! I’m one of those weirdos who spin wool also! I like to say that I spin my wheels and actually get somewhere!😜 What yarn shops are in Salem now?
This was such a beautiful documentary. I absolutely love your camera work and the whole atmosphere you created. Looking forward to discovering more of your channel.
This is complicated knitting, I have yet to try it! It has been proven that knitting improves your brain...especially this kind. It is very mathematical.
Fantastic video, but I’m really struggling to understand the words especially with the music around the 10 minute mark. It would be better if the music was a bit quieter against the voices, or if there was subtitles :) but I am really loving this The jumpers are absolutely beautiful!
Just watching with closed captioning and found the auto translation of Fair Isle into feral knitting very amusing. From now on I'll be feral knitting! I didn't catch a mention of the actual island yet though and am quite a way in.
Knitting simple pieces..it makes me appreciate the jumpers made here in Fair Isle..thanks for this one..a hard to get to place but worth it.. it seems..as they say civilised.. 🧶 .. ❤.. 🧶
This was beautiful to watch, great cinematography and the sound design was really creative! You really evoked that feeling of going somewhere special and the sweetness of leaving with the joy of having experienced something wonderful. Thank you for sharing your trip and for making this lovely documentary :)
Thanks for posting this - I enjoyed it very much. You needed to have shown yourself knitting, Benjamin, in order to show you've got knitting chops! Or at least show *someone* doing some hand knitting (even if it's you!). And what kind of sheep are we looking at there? Very enjoyable. Did you make a career out of this documentary-making business??
Thanks so much for the positive feedback, I wish I could go back and do it again to give everyone another angle of the island. If you ever get the chance there really is nothing like visiting the actual place!
@@thebenjaminburton yeah, maybe one day! Nothing like staying home in the PNW though. I wonder if the cascade region will ever develop its own knitting styles.
Too bad this movie wasn’t edited for sound. The background music and other weird clicking sounds overpowered the beautiful people’s voices. Please try again and dial down all the background noises.
I loved the film as far as I watched, up to the sea bird part. To hear the people talking I had to have the sound up too loud and the music was physically making my ears hurt. I have moderate hearing loss, so it probably isn't the same for everyone.
It looks really interesting but it's hard to watch because the background music is too distracting, and as an EFL speaker I need more clarity to actually understand what the people are saying.
With its lovely content, this could have been a fascinating documentary, but unfortunately the incidental music was too loud and busy--it detracted from the interviews in an unprofessional, even disrespectful way, as if you didn't actually want your interviewees' voices and words to be heard. So glad the wool needles hands podcast led me here, what a lovely piece of film

The noise over interviews was distracting bordering on disrespectful. But otherwise it was a great piece of film.
Please, next time you make a video, could you make it without music to accompany the dialogue. It is very hard to hear what is being said....
Mistake to add the clicking and musical background. It really spoils it for me. Sorry. At least I can mute it and read the captions.
Lovely film, but terrible discordant noise around the 10 min mark. And the clacking noise throughout sounds like a pepper grinder.
