A Letter to My Grandfather | RIP Russell R. Burton
There is a beauty to something that has been hand crafted, whether its a good meal, a beautiful sweater, or a bar of soap. There is a sense of care and talent, that goes into each and every thing that is created by hand... a sense of that thing having been created, cost someone their time and their intelligence...something that will never be found in having something that there are millions of copies created on machines.
Taking this in : a TWO HOUR ferry 🫣… oof …
Been making Keps using Ann Sinclair's wonderful pattern for years, great seeing where it actually comes from! The background music though is both intrusive and unnecessary and frankly extremely annoying. Film would be great without it.
Wish you all's happy New year 2025❤
Great work!!
😢
Dear Benjamin, 4 years later, here I am at nigh 80 years old & lifetime knitter & teacher of same to men, women, children, and all special needs. I adore stranded knitting and thank you for your choice of topic in your college course. I think everyone has critiqued you to pieces with your film making, so I will reserve my opinion. 😊 Best of all that is good on you, dear lad, in whatever your heart desires❣️👍🤗
Thank you so much, your words are very impactful and make me happy to know that people have enjoyed the documentary. I have learned and grown a lot since I shot this project and most of the critics are valid and I would agree with them but yeah they're a little harsh so I appreciate you not destroying my work to shreds. Haha even if it was deserved! I wish you the best of luck and hope that people learn to love knitting as much as you!
@@thebenjaminburtonThank you for your kind words, Ben. A new friend told me just 2 days ago that It's no surprise I am such a knitter...my DNA is so Viking, Celtic, Norse. My hands show the proof of Viking bloodlines with the frozen arched fingers of Dupetren's Sydrome. As long as I can knit & teach, I am happy.🤗 Bless you in your journey, Ben🙏
Great work!!
I have really enjoyed watching this however I did find the background music too loud. It was more difficult to hear the interviews.
The blurr effect.....
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wat zou ik graag een vel wol kopen 😊
Where is this place?!
Beautiful filiming. I love fair isle. Without music would be better.
Where in Kansas is this? Looks dope asf!

How hard did you find it to get a job in the USA when you came back? Did companies look at it poorly on your resume?
While I've never gotten a job specifically because I worked abroad teaching English. I have gotten jobs because of my ability to speak Spanish fluently. I will say that it also sets you out from other people who have little to no life experience outside of simply going to college and then straight to work. I will also say that most people tell me that they're jealous or "wish I would've done something like that after college" I'm biased but I will always recommend that people spend some time outside of America and experience more of the world. It's up to you but in my experience it won't get you any jobs but it absolutely won't hurt you or stop you from getting jobs but it will help you stand out. I'd say go for it, you definitely won't regret it!
Was it worth it? I am 24 year old woman and worried I am too old for this. I got a school outside of Cordoba and I was going to commute to the town.
This aint art.
I need to go here looks lit
Yo I live in Kansas where is this at?
Poor sound, good film!
Thanks for posting this - I enjoyed it very much. You needed to have shown yourself knitting, Benjamin, in order to show you've got knitting chops! Or at least show *someone* doing some hand knitting (even if it's you!). And what kind of sheep are we looking at there? Very enjoyable. Did you make a career out of this documentary-making business??
With its lovely content, this could have been a fascinating documentary, but unfortunately the incidental music was too loud and busy--it detracted from the interviews in an unprofessional, even disrespectful way, as if you didn't actually want your interviewees' voices and words to be heard. I don't believe you intended this, and now I see farther down in comments that you're aware of the problem and wish you could do a do-over. Three years later, I imagine your skills have greatly improved! I wish you the best.
The music under the video is so annoying, please, next time you do these videos dont put music in or turn the music down.
I had to stop watching this due to the annoying music/noises that made it virtually impossible to understand what the interviewees were saying. Too bad because it appeared to be otherwise well produced.
I just started looking into this deckhand in Alaska stuff and I’m ready to pull the trigger and get out there but unsure the best way to secure a job/ where to look. Any tips?
Knitting simple pieces..it makes me appreciate the jumpers made here in Fair Isle..thanks for this one..a hard to get to place but worth it.. it seems..as they say civilised.. 🧶 .. ❤.. 🧶
i've been to fair isle a few times, it's really worth a visit. and not at all so difficult to do as you might expect. if you're an artist, you might like to do a residency at fair isle studio.
Beautiful film. Thanks for doing it and sharing I am an old granny knitter and found the background music and sounds made the interviews difficult to hear. Using subtitles was distracting because of so many wrong words. Fair Isle was always printed as feral. But lovely and informative film.
Go Bearcats! Willamette '09 alum!
Disappointing that the sweaters are not knitted by hand ☹️
I can’t listen to this the “music” is horrendous in my ears..( tinnitus survivor )
Thanks Benjamin I loved your film because I love to knit and learning the history & background of different methods of knitting makes knitting mean so much more to me than just a hobby or craft. And yes, we all need to "Wise Up" Thanks
So glad the wool needles hands podcast led me here, what a lovely piece of film
Me, too!
Thank you
Wow Mr. Burton, thanks for breaking this down, it’s crazy how much goes into shooting videos. Your fans love this BTS content. Great work 🫡
lil momma killed it with all the bts shots and this was such an amazing project P.S tell Lucas we miss the Arri
Thank you for a lovely video and for further insights into how the knitting is done nowadays.
I love that you are a knitter...thank you for the visit to Fair Isle. Such lovely people.
Please, next time you make a video, could you make it without music to accompany the dialogue. It is very hard to hear what is being said....
The music is really maddening!!! I almost stopped watching because of it.
So inspirational!
lovely video but disappointed that you didn't show any actual knitting being done
Hi from PDX. Was watching "the repair shop". They mentioned in a spinning wheel segment about fair Isle, that wheels parts would be made from wood washed up from the sea, since there's no trees there.
No need for music when people are talking; it doesn't maximise the impact, just detracts
Love this!!
This came across my feed as I get interested in stranded knitting - imagine my surprise to find out it’s a WU student! Go Bearcats! (JD 2008) Thanks for the video!
Such a pity you have machinery running and music throughtout interviews. Plus panning over the knitting, the in and out of focus is annoying. The pace and general content very nice.
YES BEN YES!
