She said she had done it before. And the way the instructor had them holding the hook was very awkward. I hold the hook the way Ariel does and it’s much easier. Yeah I can crochet and I knit so there, I’m that nerdy.
Muscle memory came back for her. I crochet (and knit) and can tell from how she was working.

Yeah I never could hold the hook like she’s got them doing- I hold my hooks “wrong,” more like Ariel but not exactly. I’m also really bad at holding tension the way you’re supposed to, and mine is probably gonna give me joint problems later in life, lol. But I can FLY through a project.

When teaching crochet, I think it's super important to let the learner know that there's multiple ways to hold the crochet hook. When I was learning, I thought there was only pencil grip and that hurt my hand like an absolute bitch as I have arthritis, so I gave up on crocheting very quickly. When I saw a video of someone crocheting with knife grip I decided to give it another go and have now been crocheting for years as this grip is incredibly more comfortable and doable for me. I feel that teaching multiple grip types is make or break when it comes to learning crochet.
Dude, no one in the comments is giving Keith enough credit for how much growth he made in this video. He literally went from giving up before he even started to finishing a beautiful square of crocheting!
Agreed he did frickin awesome when he got his pace, and he seemed to enjoy it once he was able to not think about it so hard!
And that's why he is my favorite try guys
It definitely helped when they switched to much larger hooks. You get a better idea of how it works. You could see that Keith was starting to understand it. I hope he goes back and gives the more typical smaller hooks another chance.
NOT TO MENTION THAT HE MADE A SHORT MUSICAL WHILE DOING IT ALL

I’d love to see them try cross stitch and embroidery! There are a ton of different stitches for embroidery. Cross stitch would be easier but they could make versions of their pixelated faces they have framed above the couch.

usually when you've done something before and get back into it, you pick it up real fast. craft work like crocheting is muscle memory, you don't completely lose those instincts

I crochet and they did pretty good. I wonder why they taught the pencil hold instead of the knife hold? Becuase in my experience knife hold is a lot better and better on the wrist over time
Same! There is more than one way to hold your hook and yarn. Find what is comfortable for you!
I was wondering this too! Picked up my work in progress to try the pencil hold and it is SO much more difficult! I thought maybe it was just me being more used to the knife hold

Ariel seems like the kid that does everybody's homework in class as a hobby.
The thing is people think if you work extra hard or do most of the work they're being manipulated, but in actuality that person is becoming more skilled than you. You're making them more adaptable and talented. Ariel is relearning a hobby and a skill and is persevering through challenge.

@@bailey7902 hey, no it's not strange at all! I'm happy to help! Bella Coco was a YT channel that I used a lot - her videos are really easy to follow and she has a lot of patterns and different types of stitches (just look through her playlists :) ). I also used a lot of pinterest for patterns - I just searched "baby toy crochet pattern" and a lot comes up, and then you just go through and find what one you like best. All patterns have a hook size and yarn that you can use but honestly, you can use whatever yarn you want - and then a respective hook size to match that yarn (yarns have the hook size that they need written on the packaging, or you can just eye-ball it yourself, the hook just needs to be able to grab the yarn cleanly without it slipping or falling off). Hope this helps, and good luck!

Everyone says knitting is easier but for me, crocheting is so much easier. I'm still kinda new at it but I love it! I crochet at work and while watching TV and it's totally a piece of cake for me. Maybe I'm doing it wrong and it's supposed to be harder than it is. lol
Most people who do both knitting and crocheting often prefer one over the other. I think it is because they use a few different muscles. So, the habitual movement of one that they like better strengthen some muscles more. That makes it easier to do that craft.
As a crocheter this was my first time seeing someone holding their hook like a pencil. Or it was just the first time I noticed that I'm probably holding mine wrong. So I tried holding it like a pencil and I've never gotten so frustrated at my slow pace and the many mistakes💀
No wonder they thought crocheting is so hard
a lot of people do pencil grip, you and i both do knife grip (unless you have a super wacky third way), different people have different preferences for which is more comfortable and faster for them. but absolutely, i also tried pencil grip once and it was just yikes

I feel like Keith did not get the recognition that he deserves. He started out stressed and hating it but never gave up and the outcome he did excellent. He should be proud of what he achieved.

I relate to Keith a lot because I too get frustrated easily when I try something new and can't quite pick it up. So I understand his frustration. It feels like you're going to explode😂

I feel like the Try Wives are unfairly underrated when compared to their husbands. It makes me so happy that Ariel knew how to crochet, could she be any cooler? I also loved that Becky tried to encourage Keith while he struggled.
