I have no problem with Fuji's direction. In fact I think they cater better than most brands (what other brand is offering wildly different interfaces such as PASM and Analog).
My issue is with all brands, boring clinical well scoring lenses (that come at a cost in terms of size, weight and price). I don't mind some soft edges at f1-1.2, but of course we can't let a lens score poorly in some boring test so lets double the weight of the lens!
No brand is perfect, I had a love hate relationship with Pentax as well, and Fuji it's mostly love but of course I still have gripes. Its natural.

The 8mm is a welcomed addition to the lens road map. Landscape photographers have been talking about wanting a small ultra wide prime for a long time. But it's fishy how fuji is marketing it as a vlogging lens.

One thing I can’t understand is why fuji doesn’t lean into sims. If they added a feature that allowed users to easily share custom sims between cameras, they’d absolutely kill it. Especially now with film being so popular. But instead they barely put any effort into it. They release 1 new sim and say they can’t offer the sims to older models. It’s none sense.

    • @Bocsaphoto
      @Bocsaphoto Год назад +5

I would rather have a film simulation firmware update behind a paywall than to completely leave older models in the dust. I feel like this is the only compromise because at the end of the day they're a business. Not trying to be a boot licker or anything but some other comments are talking about how fuji is barely breaking even in their consumer cameras. Just showing my concern for the future of the brand.

I used to think this was what the company was about, customer first, keeping customer loyalty. By now, I'm thinking it was plan A to setup Plan B, which is to use that customer loyalty to move them up to new models for those new simulation and features, some of which could be back supported by older cameras. Assuming now Fuji will no longer do that, Fuji will join the rest of the camera makers who experience the merry-go-round of customers that will sample a product then move on to someone else. This will be death of their customer loyalty in my opinion.

As a Fuji investor they are in a bind. The camera division is a break even to money looser representing 13% of fujis total revenue. Investors really want them to spin off the camera and film division but are stopping short of forcing them because they know heritage is so important to Japanese firms. The recent direction is an attempt to push margins on equipment from 30% to the 40-60% range. I.e. a 23mm 1.4 wr costs marginally more to make then the 23 f2 but the margins are closer to 60%. Luckily they have a great lineup of aging lenses that can be had for cheap and are still fantastic.

Thanks for that. As a Fuji shooter I can empathise with some commentators on here because I'd like to see improvements in auto focus, the app etc, but I think many of us have no idea of the financial side of these various issues. Fuji is running a business and as you say the camera division is a "break even to money loser" which must have a huge impact on what they're able to do.

Heritage is also important to their customers. It is the Fuji culture that has grown their customer base. I don't think profit and customer satisfaction have to be mutually exclusive. I am a full time pro and have used Fujifilm for years. I've owned many systems and the only ones for which I've felt inspired to use and some loyalty towards, are Leica and Fuji. Although Apple has become immense they've managed to maintain some of their customer loyalty and culture while be being hugely profitable. Not saying I want Fuji to become Apple but there are ways to be profitable and still maintain some of their appeal, original culture and cater to their loyal base.

@@tims8305 It definitely does and there are many competing factions in situations like these. There are clearly people at Fuji that are very passionate and extremely talented but when you’re walking a financial tightrope those creative voices get buried by the money ppl overriding them. @@JoelWolfsonPhoto I completely agree with you and that feeling is why I shoot Fuji as well. When you are in a situation like Fuji is though the creatives often get overruled by the money men. For every X-Pro series and 35 1.4 R there’s an 8mm vlogging lens that is wildly overpriced for what it is and it’s perspective buyer base. I.e. RUclipsrs and tiktokers looking to up their video chops’s. IMO even though certain releases puzzle me I feel like Fuji balances this money ppl vs creative’s dichotomy better then 99% of companies.

On that 8mm is not such a bad idea, looks very compact, rectilinear and most people shoot ultrawides at small apertures. Fuji has long lenses too, not sure what else you expect? 70-300, 100-400, 200mm f2, 150-600mm. App you say? All camera apps suck tbh, but Fuji will release a new one today. I definitely agree on the firmware/film sim front, hopefully they do start to listen and this is just a bump in the road. And I'm defs slightly worried as an X-S10 user... guess we'll have to see what shakes out, but to change such a fundamental tenet of the company would be a massive risk long term. And on the lens front, I think we will have to rely more on third party lenses now. Which is unfortunate to a degree, like if you are a pro or prosumer that might be a problem, but as a hobbyist I think it's fine, like I just picked up the TTArtisan 27 2.8 and really really like it. Can’t forget the cinematographers. Fujifilm has cinema lenses and makes some of the greatest cine & PL mount lenses on the market, but they still neglect the true Cinema features and camera bodies that they market as video cameras. I get that Fuji is photo first, but so is Leica and even they have bodies that have basic filmmaking essentials like shutter angle. Fujifilm has put sons of money into their own productions and short films that they film with their cameras to market them as cameras they can make industry-level movies…. But implement zero fundamental filmmaking features. So annoying. We aren’t asking for internal ND and crazy high end features. Just at least give us shutter angle, waveforms and a true TC integration

The X-S20 is just a dream camera, even compared to the new Sony a6700: open gate 6.2k (instead of 4k), 7 stops IBIS (instead of 5 on Sony), no overheating like on the Sony. • @joao.s.cardoso
    @joao.s.cardoso 9 месяцев назад +1

I dont really know where to start.
I used or use Fujifilm from X-T10, X-T1, X-T2. X-T3, X-T4, X-H2, X100, X100s, Z100T, X100F, X-M1, X-E2, X-E3, etc etc etc. When was it that we had a new film simulation that was updated to previous models? I honestly don't remember. But you do know you can create your own recipts in camera, so how is this a problem?
Updates?! I do know that they released updates do X-T3 to work with the new app, and big fixes and such this year! 2023! This is a camera that was release in 2018. Since then we have T4, T5 and H2. And still got updated.
Update the F:2 lens? Why? I have the 23mm and the 35mm f:2 and its fast, weather resistant and great IQ. Why is there a need to update these? You have a new line of 1.4 lens that everyone states are amazing glass and that even take full potential of the 40mp sensors. And the f:2 also does.
Not sure what was all that about Leica also. I have a Leica and I have Fujifilm and we are talking about 2 completely different worlds. And price range btw. Why Leica would be focused on content creators as Fujifilm and other brands, seems odd to me to compare. Also about initiatives from Fujifilm promoting artists, sponsoring them, awarding prizes, exhibitions and loaning gear every year? GFX Grant Challenge Program anyone?!
About small cameras. I'm assuming that you are referring to the new H2 and H2s that are basically the size of a Full Frame camera. Fujifilm didn't discontinued the X-T line as far as I know. Not even X-Pro or X-E. And they just released a X-S20. There are plenty of choices and actually I'm looking forward to see what will come out for the Pro and E versions. Will they use the new 40mp sensor? Will they use the 26mp stacked sensor? Wither way, its going to be a major jump on AF and processing power. We have a good example. X-S20.
Sorry if this sounds like a Rant to your video. I don understand to an extent that sometimes we feel the need to move faster and we need more options. I do believe there are things that Fuji need to improve obviosuly. They need to get their act together with it comes to software AF algorithms. Make a huge jump with the H2/s but are still not quite there. They also need to provide more lens options on wide. But on the other hand, we need to give them the deserved merit on refreshing the tele side of thins and the new primes. And also a fantastic move to open the mount to third parties like Viltrox, Sigma, Tamron, etc. Amazing lens coming out to the system.
Now... this is for APS-C... when it comes to Medium Format Fujifilm have been doing huge jumps in innovation and offer, at Full Frame prices.

Some very good points made. I started wanting a Fuji after feeling the xpro2 and x100f in the store and then listening to the Raymond Hatfield podcast with Valerie Jardin.
My first exposure to Fuji was probably Hugh Brownstones XT3 review despite me choosing the A73 at the time but would definitely have chosen the XT3 if it had IBIS.
I ended up getting a X100V as my first Fuji. It was okay but it was enough for me to get an XT4.. I then sold all my Sony gear and bought a Canon R5 and 24-70 because Fuji magic is with the primes and maybe the longer 2.8 zooms.
Now my primary camera is the XH2S because I insist on a high quality EVF and I’m convinced Fuji chose to trickle the bare minimum into the XT5 to help them sell more XT6’s which yes if the XT6 has a 5.76 EVF with a slightly bigger screen and premium feel like the XT4 is happily buy one.
I personally feel the 40 megapixels is a bit of a gimmick

Great Post on many points ! Shot canon for over 20 years.. had TONS of Lglass... Started with the very first x100... for wedding reception candids and something fun to carry around and was blown away by what i was getting (especially in the wedding candid world cuz..... it was not this huge thing that made people run, or change their demeanor cuz they saw me coming)... That said eventually sold off ALL of the canon gear and have been shooting "thousands" (yes) of weddings since that time (I have been very involved with a "chapel" co. for 15 years so "yes" Thousands" ... That said I have gone through x100,x100s,x100t,x100f, xpro1, and currently in the bag xpro2,xh1,xpro3 and gfx50r.... I have a huge collection of native xf glass, and an even larger collection of vintage 35 glass... I simply love the experience of shooting with these bodys and honestly feel the glass is second to NON at a "resonable price" ... YES even the GF glass compared to what the L glass cost in the Canon days... As u mention... It has long been so frustrating that if I wanted to shoot a native fuji film sim ... it may be avial on some of the body's but not the others... "i get the marketing" but for wedding day continuity "Fuji Looses" cuz... I cant do it... depending on what you want to sync up after the fact... (always thought they should market a "black box/fuji dark room box with a dongle or something so it would only work on fuji files... but a fuji dark room computer box/plug in so "any fuji files from any legacy cameras you could sync up to the same film sim, and not have to mickey mouse around with sliders).... I get that they discontuned the 50r (the only med format i was interested in)... but continuing to "max" those older gfx body's out with firmware updates on a "future proof size sensor" to me is a no brainer.... The phone Ap for all of the old cameras was a joke as far as consistency and as you said "un usable".... list goes on and on... Like you... Not interested in changing... Love the look, love the glass... love the form factor... I would also note that I have sent my Fuji body's in for some repairs More than I ever did my canon mk2,3's and 4's.... but like you I HATED shooting those systems even though the results were just fine... Just didn't have the look I was gravitating to once i started shooting fuji x stuff.... Like many have said, there is no perfect camera, and or perfect camera company... but yeah hi fives on your post here.... You hit a bunch of nails on the head.... perhaps Fuji will take note :) again Thanks for Posting !

After posting that... I also want to make clear... regardless of the repairs I have had to make occasionally on my fuji body's... Their customer service has always been resonable/approachable (i.e. i can talk to someone on the phone) and returned in a resonable amount of time ! (was not my experience with Canon for over 20 years) I totally understand "new shutters" are a wear issue, not a malfunction issue... but for instance on my Xpro3... the rear screen has not worked for almost 2 years... I just use the EVF/OVF and will send it in eventually (probably after i purchase an xpro4)... however the issue is frustrrating none the less... even though I ador the xpro series ! But yeah... their service has been as good as any camera company as I have ever delt with.... My xpro2 i sent in some ages back for a shutter... and the bottom plate on it was all scraped up (honestly had a nice sort of petina on it) ... and over and above the other service i was having done on the camera at N/C they replaced that bottom plate... Truly even though i liked the petina... I thought that was really nice custo service for them to do ! things like that and experiences like that with the service dept. over and above the images i can create... keep me with the brand regardless of sometimes twisted and confusing road maps !

I developed a beef with Fuji in December 2020 when I had a 7 month old x100v. I bought it one month after release. Somehow found it used at B&H.
The viewfinder developed issues and Fuji said they won’t honor the warranty as they can’t confirm the age of a used camera… makes sense, if it had been out for more than a year.
What really caused the beef was the rep confirmed that I could have been the 7th owner of the camera and bought it on eBay. As long as I had the original receipt they’d have honored the warranty 🤷‍♂️
Bit of a vent but all that to say. I agree.

I love using my 35mmf2 but I wish it was a pancake lens… It would make my xpro even smaller and more compact. But the want has fallen on deaf ears.

Yeah spot on man. I went to Fuji in 2017 because I wanted small and light and it was less expensive than the full frame DSLRs. Now they decided to force us all into video camera specs and the bodies are getting larger and lenses fatter. The big boys at Sony, Canon and Nikon are making small, light mirrorless solutions in full frame. Want knobs and buttons? Nikon Zf. Just not sure where Fuji is headed strategically with it's APS-C line-up. Not to mention that two of their flagship models (X-Pro and X100v) are long since discontinued.

I've been shooting Fujifilm for 7 years now and it does make me want to shoot. I am very excited to add the H2s body at some point, albeit I HATE that flippy screen. They just never last. It is also stupid sad that at the very least, let the new film simulations trickle down the old lineup.

  • @benjaminbjacobsen
    @benjaminbjacobsen Год назад +1

It's a business. Kaizen made sense back in the day because when you had an XT1 they could fix the issues before the could develop the xt2. This meant people would be more likely to buy a non perfect body w/o waiting and there was excitement. Now that they're on the XT5, what are they going to add? So the Xpro is behind, the XE is behind, but they're making video centric XH1 and XH2 and XS20.... Sony has also only released vlogging/content creators these day. That's the market shift, that's what they have to make to make money. Also with the TikTok X100v popularity they need to work on making those over developing new cameras when there's no capacity to build them.
Lens wise the 8mm makes sense for two reasons. The first is the same reason their new camera is a vlogging camera. It's a great vlogging lens. Wide enough to get yourself into the frame and light enough to hold at arms length. The 8-16 is great but it's way too big to hand hold. The 10-24mm & 8mm COMBINED weight 25% less than the 8-16mm... So again, vlogging is the new market. For me, a real estate/landscape guy, the 8mm has an appeal as the 8-16mm can't take filters. This gives me that focal length if I need it and the ability to use filters on it. That's a big deal.
Long lens wise I agree they could make more. A 300 2.8 would be sick since those lenses take the TC so well.... But you have to give them credit for the 150-600. Internal zoom lenses are so rare and SO much better than the external options. Sony and fuji are the only two who make one that are reasonably priced. Canon has the 100-300 now and the 200-400 but those are at a much different price range. Also I have to wonder how many people buy these lenses? Pros need the big options but that market is pretty well cemented into a system and most likely not switching to fuji even if they had them. That makes long (especially the expensive options) a very boutique market. They need to sell lots of an item to invest the R&D into it so long glass is unfortunately not going to happen IMHO.
Not saying I like the fact they're getting very vlog/content creator focused, I'm just saying it's a business decision to keep the doors open. I also think progress has gotten us so far we're all upgrading less and less.

Agreed. I just don't understand why people think a camera should be in a perpetual state of development. BUGS/DEFECTS are one thing. But new features are another entirely. When I buy a camera with a feature set, I've told myself that "this camera solves my problem(s) or fits my needs." If it didn't I wouldn't have ever bought it. Buying a camera without a SIM/feature and then complaining that it doesn't have it later is dirty football. It was never a "need" before or you woudn't have bought that body - LOL. I can't for the life of me see a new feature come out and then get upset at my camera for not having it. I think these issues largely get resolved when people approach body purchases properly. Ask yourself "what problem are you trying to solve?" If the camera AS PRODUCED solves it - then go shoot something. I don't personally know any shooter who has more talent than my a6500 | A7iii | Ricoh GRII will allow them to exercise, and I know some pretty amazing shooters. I do agree on glass though. Keep updating Sony APSC glass and I'll continue to own my a6500 (or whatever I upgrade to in the future) - same goes for my A7iii. If my needs change as far as what I need from a body - I don't think it's Sony's job to fix me with firmware (as long as the features I purchased initially are working as designed).

    • @DeeRosa

I understand what you're saying but the consumer didn't request this - Fujifilm PROMISED this and said this is what separates them from the rest.
You all want to talk about - it's a business as if people don't understand why they're doing it. Everyone does it. But when you as company promise something, tout it every chance up to 2018, talk about it more in 2020, and then don't do it - people can ask what the hell is going on.

    • @musicmaestro88

@@DeeRosa I get it bro. But it's a slippery slope because the same people that want "free" upgrades also want new lenses and better faster lighter smaller everything. Where do they think the funding will come from if people (like me) are shooting bodies from the stone ages? It's hard to balance the 2. I LOVE the new Sony colors. But truth be told I'll put my a7iii up against anything out there as far as image quality (as long as I get to pair it with modern glass). There's no way to keep a camera company alive with folks who want their XE3 to get all the updates the XT6 (lol) has. The glass argument is a real one tho and I agree there. Sony screwed themselves from me upgrading my A7iii when they came out with the new 24-70f2.8 and the new 50mm1.2. Glass breathed new life to my old body. Be safe Dee!! 🤜🏾🤛🏾

Still has some compromises but the output offers something special. Before the X-Pro2 came out Fuji were selling factory refurb X-Pro1s (reputed to be new shop returns) with a full warranty for £250. You'd pay about double for the same camera in that condition in 2023. The company moved form a quirky, labour-of-love manufacturer to mainstream contenders and lost something along the way.

The story of almost every brand not only Fuji can be told like this: x brand while little was a bold brand carving a niche in the market, once they did, they went for a bigger target which meant to become mainstream because to be bigger you have to hit a bigger target of needs so you become more like every other competitor in the marketplace. Now their first users don't like that because they feel that their brand is not what it used to be when it was smaller, and felt more personal.
So Fuji has changed, yes. Makes better, more broadly appealing products, you could make an argument for it.

In 2010 a quantity of 120 miliom Photo cameras was sold, now the market is only 18 million cameras a year. That the manufacturers focus on market that update their camera regulrly is for survival. Most cameras companies had lost money the last years. Olympus sold their division to the only buyer the can found, that is a hedge fund. DPReview and Image resources are closing. Ignoring film sims and other things, even something niche like instax compatibility, the X-S10 is the only X camera(maybe one of the X-A) that can work with the Instax Link Wide. All the same gen camera have comparable hardware. There's no reason why that should be the case aside from branding and market segmentation. The Instax is for casual consumers and the X-S10 is also marketed towards that group, that's all it is. I know some will say is that's one small stupid thing, who cares, but it still proves the point.

. . ?hhhmmm?. . .I'm a newly retired product development engineer and now an events photographer, so I believe I can represent both sides of the coin [i.e. Fuji vs consumer]. There's only so many things a manufacturing developer can do, so Fuji has to prioritize every cent and hour. Folks like me are happy with the release of the XT-5 as it gets back to roots: a smallish form factor for primarily stills with updated autofocus, of which the algorithm was just updated via a kaizen firmware update. And the former Fujifilm App was horrible, but is now being salvaged; yes long overdue. However kaizen can only be so effective as former hardware is limited: do you really think an X100S can gain every new film simulation and new autofocus features just because you want it? If you believe it can, then you don't understand the nature of processor and memory chips. And who's asked for a revamp of lenses? Me! While yes the 35mm lens was artsy, I can make the 33mm just as artsy with a Black Mist filter, a good film simulation, and low aperture bokeh. But the revamped 23, 33, and 56 mm lenses are incredible in terms of resolution and autofocus speed. If I had one recommendation for Fuji it would be to do what Elac in the audio speaker world has done: with new materials, high performing batteries, processors, and memory chips - do not follow the crowd in terms of incrementalism, but rather leverage these new resources to rethink core values which gets incorporated into design, including simplicity, aesthetic rendering, and lifetime use. Just as Toyota became way too comfortable in its incremental ways, only to be wholly blown away by Tesla, I hope Fuji doesn't follow the crowd.

I had an old Fuji DSLR and used until it but the dust.
Then I got a Nikon. It's hard to complain about a Nikon, but truly, a Nikon camera doesn't stand up against a Fuji camera very well. As soon as I can manage it, I'm switching back to Fuji.
Fuji sells more DX and large format digital cameras than all other manufacturers.
Fuji doesn't sell full frame, so what this really means is Fuji outsells everything.

I’m in a different space this time! I still remember my struggles with Canon & FOR ME, Fuji has been the answer I’ve been hoping for!! Now I’ve only been shooting Fuji since 2018 & exclusively Fuji since mid 2022. I agree they need to keep doing what initially lured me to them and yes I don’t think I’m interested in the 8mm!!!! 😂

Kaizen was a great idea but companies cannot make money if they always give away the latest and greatest for free. I do agree that their lenses make no sense. Why do we need a 33 and a 35mm both? 33 is 50 in ff and 35 is 53 who wants a 53mm lens???

Simple, the new hi-res bodies needed lenses that could resolve these sensors. telephoto zooms at long ranges are available already and telephoto primes are such a tiny niche market as they are incredibly expensive.

I strongly disagree with some things you mention. In the last 5 years Fuji has released many lenses. It recently replaced its top line, where street photographers benefit (18,23,33,50,55), you have the cheapest and smallest option with the F2(23,35,50), not counting the old versions with excellent quality of 16,23,35,56... my question is, what else do you want?
8mm seems to me the best option to make Vlogs. since it is trendy.
the 16-55 and 50-140 are not worth a replacement. they are still beasts of glasses. almost perfect.

If Fuji had a colour accurate profile in ther cameras to go along with the latter-day hipster simulations I'd have stayed. Loved my Xpro cameras, but Nikon along with capture one pro give me something accurate without a load of faffing about.

I don’t understand why Fujifilm can’t develop long fast prime lens. It’s longest lens is a 200/2.0 which is a 300/2.8 in full frame equivalent. The long zooms are way to slow.
