Update : firmware update 4.0 is released, in the mean while I’ll be making a video about this so please report back in real time your thoughts if autofocus issue has been resolved.
@@jcar4522 They got back to me the same day saying that there was an update for the X-H2S within a couple of days and “more to come” at the end of June 🙏
@@helldriver1957 They have just released 6.01 few hours ago and doesnt fix anything. Do you mean there'll be another one in addition to the 6.01 in June? To be honest, too late... im looking for a6700 or fx30
I've felt the same way since I bought the XT5. I shoot a lot of weddings and couple sessions, and I realized that when objects move quickly, the result is a lot out of focus. I thought it was just a firmware issue, but after I updated it, it looks the same, no change I feel. I was surprised because the green box seemed to work fine on my camera's lcd. But the results after I checked on the computer were out of focus. Even when I took a picture where the object was not moving, it was still out of focus! Even though the green box looked in focus! After I watched this video, I was convinced to sell my XT5 as soon as possible.
The green box is a lie! That's honestly my biggest gripe. Not only can't the camera do continuous subject detect focus consistently (in my experience, even on subjects sitting still), but it lies about it. Hard to trust the tool when it lies to you.
As a fujifilm (camera) fan, I really appreciate your patience and thoroughness in the tests. As you said, yes the price for these cameras and lenses shouldn't justify these AF results. As a hobby landscape and birding photographer, it is an issue for half the photos I take... And yes it unfortunately changes how I feel about the brand... Given it is just a hobby for me, I don't feel compelled to change systems (again, since I had switched from sony to fujifilm due to colors and manual controls).
Before Fujifilm constantly increase the prices of cameras and lenses, they should first deliver reliable products that correspond to the current technical standards.
They would if they could. Realistically, they are just incapable due to incompetency. Let's just accept it after years of fixing, but still not being able to provide a reliable focusing.
I really do hate when the fanboys say, “ you just don’t know how to set up the AF, you have the wrong settings “. Why do I need to dive deep into the menu and spend hours tweaking and experimenting on each setting? On my Canon, I put it in the mode I want and it works like 90% + of the time. I’ve never tweaked any AF setting on my canon r6
Well said. When I was using the fuji, I've to constantly put myself on high alert mode when shooting important events such as wedding and baptism. Because in the past, my fuji lost focus on important moments. It was very easy on a6000 made me felt like I was cheating (after switching from dslr) before I switched to fuji and it is also very easy on the R6 and R6II that I'm using now. Never the need to deep dive into menu to change AF settings for different scenario. They just work.
I just play with xt4 my friend camera today street photo the result night and day for movement subject compare to my a9 I though I never interest in fuji anymore
Totally agree with this. I've recently come back to photography and trialed a few systems before ultimately going with an X-H2. I like the camera, I like their colour science, and I just preferred it over the others I trialled. However, the Sony A7iv straight out the packet pretty much had telepathic AF. I did nothing other than stick it in eye tracking. It dared me to try and unstick it. It just wouldn't let go. The Fuji on the other hand has two issues: 1. As expertly demonstrated here, even though the box says it's locked on the face/eye, when you review the shot it's actually focused somewhere/something totally different. 2. Sometimes halfway through tracking, and with no reason, it drops the face and the box moves to (try) and focus on something that is definitely not a face, eye, or anything vaguely similar! Sort it out Fuji. I way prefer your cameras to Sony, but your AF game definitely needs improving!
I have had xh2s since release and it’s always been totally shit for photos. Images are always super soft from missing critical focus. I only use Fuji for video now as the original xh2s firmware seemed to be ok for video but now they are just expensive paper weights. Was contemplating a gfx100ii/xt5 combo for weddings but not now. Also under the same heat conditions my xt3s will record allgood but the xh2s will overheat.
It looks like it’s not just simple fix, probably bad software and badly maintained so now it’s easier to write it from scratch than fix. Unfortunately business has to go on and doing this from scratch is very expensive and time consuming.
@@zenstoodi When they fix it, it will benefit them more than us. I love Fujifilm because of their colours, and I do not have any intention of changing systems
@@asafoadjei1 sure but for now photography division was for Fuji more like “hobby” than big business (maybe except Instax). After X100vi success they could invest more but I am not sure they will.
Glad this is finally getting some more attention. I bought the X-H2 early last year, and sold it after 3 months because the AF is nearly unusable if you want to capture any action. Fuji really needs to up their game, they're dead last by a mile in this regard. Never believe reviewers, always check forums for complaints, that's what I learned from this purchase. I'm very happy with the Z8 I got to replace my Fuji.
Your credibility is skyrocketing, appropriately, due to your honest assessment of Fuji's AF. I'm a Fuji fanboy, and I'm not looking to jump ship, so I very much appreciate you using your platform to speak on our behalf. Btw, my X-T5 XF 150-600 AF seems to be worse after the most recent firmware (3.01), it was decent, but not great, on the previous firmware.
Recently invested in the XT5 and have been super frustrated as I have been experiencing the exact same thing, the focus is all over the show, I have try to play around with the settings but the result is always the same. Really appreciate this video man as I am gonna show this clip to our local Fuji representative, to prove I am not going crazy.
@@brycedelport please do. Cuz there’s a lot of Fuji fan boys out there trying to discredit folks by saying it’s user error when it’s really not.. you should also check out my xt5 vs Sony a6700 review where the af fails against its competition.
Interesting. Recently in my tests, I also find that the camera has A LOT of issue to AF especially when you have flowers or leaves around the subject, which can sometime be problematic. For those kind of shots, I just disable the subject detection all together to work around... but yeah, they really need to improve this. Get some engineers from other companies and get your AF system at the same level, that should not be such a big deal Fuji...
Couldn't agree more with how frustrating this is. My iPhone photos look sharper more often because of how Fuji constantly just misses by a little - even with stationary subjects. Shooting with the XS-20 and the fuji 18-55mm f2.8-4.
I just shot a Muay Thai tournament and had to spray and pray with AF Tennis mode and I had similar rate. Green box 100% bang on, but 50% on focus using the 16-55. Crazy.
@@Iamtongue I was in release mode because of the action. I wonder if I had used Focus mode for a few of the fights if I would have seen more hit? Were you in release or focus for the test?
@@Iamtongue for sure its not only you, as a fuji wedding videographer I go to weddings wondering how the camera is going to performance at that wedding, specially talking about AF... I ALWAYS wonder myself why tf i picked Fuji over sony... I need a reliable camera for a profesional work...Thats something Fuji should think about if they dont want people going to other companies...
I have noticed a similiar problem with my XH2S. AF feels spotty where I get the green box on the head or eyes. Instead of them being in focus, I get something completely different. Even for a brief moment during filming, the focus will jump to the background instead of the subject. Its a valid criticism. I don't expect Fuji to have Sony's or Canon's AF but it should be expected to do better than a 50% hit rate. If not firmware updates, then their next processor needs to vastly improve upon AF.
I’m happy with Fuji. I see how frustrating it can be but I shoot still or slow moving stuff. I’m very happy with what I have in the X-T5 and how it performs.
I shifted from a first gen Nikon Z6 to a sony a7iv and only then did I realize what a huge difference there was in terms of autofocus. It has completely changed the way I shoot. My attention is never towards whether the camera got the shot in focus but rather on the composition, light etc. I feel when Fuji is charging full frame prices for its cropped sensor bodies and still lacking in terms of autofocus and speed then there is a serious problem to be addressed.
Thank you (and Hilary) for your efforts, they are much appreciated by the community. These tests are some of the first tests I do (with my kids) when I try new cameras or lenses. I can confirm that with previous f/w iterations and favourable glass, an average hit rate of around 70-75% for z axis targets on the XH2S. Your findings here cement further evidence that the most recent f/w release from Fujifilm has SIGNIFICANTLY broken the AF reliability under a plethora of situations (regardless of lens used). XH2S at 6.00, XH2 at 4.0 and XT5 at 3.01 are all suffering consistent reported AF failings. It's one thing for Fuji to balls up momentarily, it's quite another to stay quiet on the matter, allow more users to 'upgrade' their cameras and further nuke their tech. FUJIFILM, PULL DOWN THIS F/W, PATCH IMMEDIATELY. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

@@edvard2942 LOL! FORGOT YOU GOT HER TOO! Where do you guys find these women, I cant even point my camera to my wife without her giving me the death stare lol - PROPS!
I don’t use the tracking often so maybe that’s why I don’t have these problems too often. I’m usually in AF-S/C using single point or zone. I think those work pretty well. I don’t wanna throw the whole AF under the bus, but it does need work. I don’t know the full specs of what the new generation processor is supposed to handle and can handle, but I do wish the updates came faster. Maybe they need to update the lens firmwares too when they’re rolling out new af algorithms.
This video is gold! Appreciate you collecting data and bringing it public. I have an X-T5 and X-H2s and can attest to the poor auto focus. I still enjoy my cameras will keep them. Thanks for keeping it real and trying to drive change.
I switched to a Panasonic g9 from an XT5 and their old DFD autofocus that everyone complains about is SOOOOO much better than Fuji phase detect AF. Nobody loves a little contrast wobble but at least it’s reliable and accurate.
Lol the way you spoke about Fuji today, I did not expect that from one of the biggest fuji supporters. But it is refreshing to hear this because it is annoying missing AF shots. The XH2s is a great quality camera but when shooting video and I miss shots I am tempted to buy a sony or lumix.
@@jcar4522 I hear y'all but remember Sony's got firmware problems too and they also deprecate features just like the best of them. This whole industry is trash
... the dilemma with going to Sony or Lumix is that you may have to spend much more to get better rolling shutter performance and more fps in both mechanical and electronic shutter. On paper X-H2s should destroy anything near its price-point, but its AF performance is its Achilles' heel!!!
@@GrayGhostDog1 preach. I'm a person that owns essentially a body in every system and I can tell you it's a frustrating prospect waiting for someone to come out with just that right camera. In fact, to be perfectly honest with you, I think a whole bunch of people put AF plus MF override. And actually the 1.0 and 2.0 software were actually really good on the xh2s, 3.0 was okay too, And apparently 5.0 was okay for some stuff as well. But yeah, it's just a frustrating prospect. I think with the point to touch functionality they're shoehorning in starting with some of the stuff at the gfx level, it set themselves back
@@haloboy456 ... I agree. When Nikon released the Z8 it was the closest thing to the hybrid camera I would possibly consider, but I'm not a full-frame snob so I try to find the most feature-rich hybrid cameras for the money. IMHO, Sony's shortcomings gets glossed over most likely because of their AF performance... had both the A7SIII and A7IV and they, too, had several shortcomings. Hopefully, Fujifilm gets their AF performance up to the standards that it appears the majority of individuals out there require.
I've avoided the tracking mode since getting into Fuji because of all of that's been said on RUclips. Therefore, I've never really tested it haha, but I can understand why it would be annoying, particularly if you need the eye tracking to work reliably. I shoot mostly sports/action photography and videography since getting the X-T4 a year ago. I always use single point or zone in continuous mode for photos and the hit rate has been great. For video, i use multi mostly because for surfing using F8 or higher means the depth of field ensures i never really have a problem with the autofocus. If the subjects are closer it's probably 50/50 between area and multi, depending on the aperture and light and it's been fine for me. Overall, I think you're good if you use single point or zone with the relevant AF mode (at least with my camera anyway). It would be nice if Fuji's tracking could be reliable (especially if the other brands are continuing to improve fast), but when it comes to sports photography, most RUclips videos I've seen still recommend using the single point continuous anyway, even with a mirrorless Canon for example. Therefore, for my needs I'm really happy with it.
Very interesting video, thanks for all the tests and sharing. I’ve been a Fuji user since X-T2, and currently use X-T5 as my go to photography gear. Mostly like to do street and environmental portraits for hobby, but also use it for taking shots of my toddlers. I really love the tactile aspect of Fuji cameras, it feels much more engaging than when I was using other brands back in the days. I personally haven’t had much issue with hit rates (even with my kids running around), but I’m also not doing that long of a continuous auto focus shots. I just go for the eye detect with short bursts if they are stationary, or AFC with lower Aperture (say F2.8 vs. 1.4) with face detect if they are running around. But yes, I don’t rely on it if AF accuracy and dependability is a priority, which is what I desire when shooting video. For that, I’ve been using the Sony ZV-E1, and it’s been a great addition. I also use Leica M6 and MP for shooting film when I really want to slow things down and also long for that genuine film look. I think at the end of the day, it’s a function of what your use case is, and finding the most suitable gear for it.
This was one of the issues why I switched from Fuji to the Nikon ZF. Yes I'm losing compactness and the aperture ring on the lenses but the Nikon's AF and Low Light performances perform way over Fuji. I still love Fuji and still hold an X100V but trying to get that consistent AF was not doing it with Fuji. It's disheartening because Fuji is known to have AF issues and still haven't improved to some degree.
this is so true ... i finally got tired of this as well. i came to the conclusion around 3->4 /10 times the auto focus would fail. I thought it was just me, or the product was faulty ... but now after seeing your video i am convinced. I am a X-E3 + 18-55 XF 2.8-4 lens
Great Job! I appreciate your honesty instead of just going with the flow and pointing out what Fuji can do better! Forget brand loyalty, If they charge top dollar they should at least compete with the others!
This is very much what I got from the A7iv shooting sports in spot tracking : great tracking in the EVF and random focusing. The solution was to use zone (about half of the sensor) or fixed spot (best). You may have similar options.
I've got a crazy setting for focusing on people on my X-H2 that works for me. 1. I always leave Subject Detection OFF, as if it didn't exist! 2. Focus mode: AF-C 3. Sutter AF > AF-C: OFF -> This disables focus when the shutter button is pressed halfway. 4. AF Mode: Spot, the biggest If the subject doesn't move much, or moves parallel to the camera, I use BBF (Back Button Focus) by pressing once with my thumb, releasing, recompose and shoot. It's like shooting AF-S in AF-C mode. But here is the trick. If the subject suddenly moves closer or further away from the camera, I aim the focus point at the person's face and keep the 'AF ON' button pressed for continuous AF while taking a shots. If the subject is moving very quickly, I do the same as above but change the AF mode to Zone (the big square). If a person is zigzagging towards the camera, which doesn't happen very often, I move the camera to keep the person in the centre of the frame! Often I can anticipate where in the frame I want to place the person, so I move the focus point to that area using the D-pad. With this setup, if a photo is out of focus, it's my fault, not the camera's.
Thank you for this tip! I've tried it with my XT-5 and it works a lot more reliably and accurately than Fuji's so-called AI-assisted AF. Not everyone wants to switch camera systems or can afford to do so. At least this approach offers a way to get sharp images from what is otherwise high-quality equipment.
Bro! I couldn’t take it anymore… sold my X-T5 and thought I’d try out the X-H2… did the update and the autofocus was still bullshit. Anyways, went and bought a Sony A7RV two days ago and it’s incredible. Even the A7IV was fantastic. I feel bad about jumping ship but my workflow is soooo much better.
My feeling with autofocus does not change after your video. I bought the x-t5 knowing that the af is not at same level of other main brands, because it is more important for me the ergonomics, size, and lower cost of lenses w.r.t. the af in sport photography. But yes, an improvement would be very appreciated, given that according to the results of your tests (ear often in focus) the prediction of focus point seems to be the real problem.
To be honest, it's the false positives/false confirmations that infuriate me. I can live with slow AF as long as green AF indicator/box really means = focus nailed.
I can relate. I was using Sigma 56mm, and I got nearly 50% of shots out of focus on a portrait session. then I detached auto focus and shot on Kamlan 50mm 1.1, mitakon 35mm 0.95, and recently Sirui 50mm anamorphic on MF mode and I'm more satisfied now, if its out of focus then I'm the one to blame. this is improving my skill as well
Man I feel you on this. As someone who's spent the $2k for the H2S and the $1.5k or so for the 150-600 for wildlife. I'm extremely disappointed that even though you get such good tracking with the box. The actual hit rate is abysmal and misses way too much. And this isn't talking birds in flight. A bird sitting in a branch should be easy to focus onto lol. EDIT: Also idk what it is. But firmware 6.00 somehow made things even worse. I wish I could revert back.
Wow, this made me feel better. The green box is doing the right thing and the hype was they’d finally fixed the AF and I was still getting weird shots - I am not the most experienced photographer, I thought it was me doing something wrong!
I absolutely love so much about Fuji cameras: their glass, the tactile feel, the colors including the log video, but I don't want to be a beta tester for their terrible firmware, and their video image stabilization is the worst in the industry and so is their autofocus. Still subjects? Great, no problems. But it's not feasible to use for sports, wildlife, pets, even pictures of your kids. And vlogging or FPV video? Need a gimbal. I very sadly left them for Lumix/Canon and was re-evaluating now a few years later, but nothing has changed. Now Lumix has Real Time LUTs, Canon has custom picture profiles that are basically LUTs, and even Sony has Picture Profiles which are much less user-friendly and a bit less flexible, but all three can get a certain "Film Sim" look SOOC. I actually have a custom Classic Neg look for JPEGs on both my Canon and Lumix cameras and it's awesome when I just want something nice and easy SOOC. And I get great image stabilization, autofocus, modern user interface, etc.
It seems gets into balancing internal camera resources which they can only fix. I almost think it’s something like the resources/footprint of running that great looking back display is leeching resources from the AF. Probably something where Fujifilm would have to decide to take a different PR hit drop the resolution the back display or elsewhere to allocate adequate resources/memory to the AF. It just seems like the cameras that are good at AF have less than stellar back displays, but it’s just a guess on my part.
Appreciate the honest review. Sony camera(s) owner here. Just received shipment of Fujifilm X-S20 and waiting on X100vi. Always enjoyed the tell it as it is style of Iamtongue.
@@testyep5031 Ordered the X100VI first on 3/23/24 (still waiting delivery). if X-S20 worked out may cancel the X100VI order. Given how long the delivery time is do not want to regret canceling the order.
My biggest gripe with fujifilm, is the IBIS, AF, and the exposure shift when you zoom. If they could fix that, it would have been ALMOST the perfect camera🤗
Barely over 50% at best. I’ve literally given up trusting Fuji to nail a wet eyeball shot. I now use A7Cii and X100V for casual ..when I’m ok missing eye AF. A7Cii & 35mm 1.4 GM is bonkers for shots where I HAVE to have legit AF. Thank you for showing this. It’s truth.
Hi Tongue! Thanks for making this video. I just had a fashion editorial shoot yesterday and I noticed that my walking shots were mostly out of focus. I couldn't understand why? You're right all last night I was considering switching brands. Hope they fix this issue. Apparently you can not rollback firmware updates. Hopefully Fuji will address this issue quickly. Thanks so much!
At times the focus was like 5-10 cm behind. Can't firmware calculate the speed of subject and compensate for the delay it needs to capture frame? How do you even match the lens linear motor jerky steps with predicted delay distance of subject? Maybe it could measure the subject height in pixels and how it increases as she walks closer.
Truth of the matter firmware can only fix so much. Nikon learned this and created a whole new processor for the Z9, Z8 and Zf. Firmware got the gen 1 Zs to respectable autofocus, but not even close to the current gen AF. Fuji need to work on the hardware.
hope not. I will not invest any longer into false promises. I had the X-T1 and X-E2, the X-T3 and X-e3 (still have the later but need a replacement because of the AF) and now the X-T5. Plus replaced most of the gen1 lenses with the newer versions. Because marketing and YTers told me so. I am done with more investment. They have to fix this on this chip.
I respectfully disagree with this. You can refer to Edvard's video comparing the AF between a 10 years old Sony a6000 against Fuji XH2s. Even thought a6000 wasn't perfect in every situation, it performed significantly better than the XH2s that has much newer and advanced processor. ruclips.net/video/K0ub7poyQPA/видео.html With Fuji, it was never the hardware, it was always the AF algorithmn, or to be more precised, their coder.
@apamacam4838 this is where you are incorrect. If it was software, it would have been corrected. Nikon had a more recent processor and it still didn't compare. The processor sucked. Nikon went back to the drawing board and created a whole new processor and whoever the engineers were, there were better engineers wren they created the next processor. Fuji just has bad engineers.
This is such a useful video. I am not in the Fuji system, but I almost was. When I was deciding what to get into, I liked many things about Fuji, but was worried about autofocus. I found no video like this then. Most reviewers were saying that it's practically on par with Sony, only small differences. In the ended it kind of didn't feel right to me, but a clear video like this would have saved me a lot of agonizing in my decision :)
Thanks for your honesty. Liking and commenting to signal boost. We shouldn't have to play around with multiple settings to squeeze a couple more hits out of Eye AF. Autofocus is the only thing holding Fuji back from being the best cameras out there, imo
There is also a bug with all manual Voigtlander lenses. The EXIF data is wrong when you set it at the largest aperture. For example, it registers f22 instead of f1.2 ...
I do agree, thanks for mentioning. I want to add another big problem, the EVF coating of some of the XT5, XH2 and XH2s. Have you already heard about that? Seems it affects the cameras from beginning/summer last year.
I recently sold my X-T5 and all my lenses and moved to the Nikon ZF and this was one of the big reasons. My largest complaint is the false positives. If the box is green it should absolutely be in focus, yet that’s not always the case and I’ve missed some great shots just because I trusted the camera to work as expected. The ZF autofocus has really shown me what I have been missing, it’s fantastic and sticky and is really simplifying my photography in a way that makes me shoot more.
@@Iamtongue It does! The subject tracking also works with adapted manual lenses so when you punch in to 100% to focus it goes to the face / eye instead of the center of the frame.
I personally refuse to buy any Fuji cameras until I see drastic improvement of auto focus, I am holding on to XT3 still. Sony and Panasonic are technology companies Fuji is cameras and health care manufacturers.
Fuji autofocus system is sub par. However, I found very high hit rate with 23 f1.4 wr v2 with running kids. 56 f1.2 wr on the other hand is 50-50. Sometimes it misses focus even on still subjects. Every lens behaves differently and have to use different af settings. This is too much hassle and not acceptable. It takes a bit more work but I am still able to create bangers and love the images. It shouldn’t be so hard for a camera to focus in 2024.
I think this is the biggest point right here. You can absolutely dial it in and get much better results, but it requires a combination of settings. And shooting conditions change all the time, lenses get swapped in and out. A system that just worked without us having to hand hold the camera would be nice. AF-S seems still to be the best choice but even that can struggle at times.
Really interesting, thank you for that. I'm using an X-T5 entirely for stills with a collection of the recent LM primes and the 50-140mm, and I always end up with some disappointing misses. This is usually me trying to capture a rampaging two year old, so I can cut it some slack there, but I've definitely also taken stationary shots using eye AF that have been off just enough to spoil a portrait. I'd rather miss the shot than have a false positive green box. I find that infinitely more annoying than a failure to track movement. My biggest problem, however, is not having a benchmark to judge this against. I came to Fuji after a decade or so out of the game, previously having used a Canon DSLR - anything in the mirrorless world would have impressed me! So, I'd love to see this repeated side-by-side with the best from Sony etc. I suspect that would be more likely to grab Fuji's attention...
I've been thinking about giving up on Fuji for a while now. I saw Sony's AF probably 15 years ago tracking a skier going downhill and it was incredible. If I didn't have the Fuji colors to sway me I'm sure I would have gone that way back then. Canon has excellent AF and nice colors and too, just sayin'.
Thanks for calling out Fuji! I think you should do another video showcasing the most trivial AF-S focusing fails on stationary objects using a wide angle lens in contrasty light. The focus will jump around by repeatedly pressing the focus button, showing that getting critical focus is a game of luck in that case. To showcase that you can turn the distance scale on in the EVF. This is one of the main issues, that still too few people have noticed, but is definitely mentioned here and there in forums. For simple everyday shots this is the main cause for soft images. So: AF-S, stationary object/scene, sunlight, focus box size does not matter. The wider the lens the worse it seems. I haven’t tested anything longer than 35mm… check it out yourself🙏🏼
Completely agreed with you. From all Fuji defenders you will hear that you have to change settings, you are using wrong lens, you have to switch this and change that... NO, we all have to admit that their AF is completely messed up... I have 3 FUJI camera bodies but I am not using them professionally fortunately. X-S10 AF is a shit, xt3 is ok for photos, X-s20 better but we have 2024 and those new cameras should have no issues, especially after last upades... but I am scared to update my X-S20 because of last fuji update which cempletely destroyed AFC and tracking in X-h2s and X-H2. It is just crazy because they did not even say anything about fixing it on last summit. It seems like fuji doesn't even care about camera users who already bought their products... just releasing tons of new cameras with shitty AF... for what? For who? Fuji should stop releasing and start fixing...
I’ve always used Zone with face detection since as far as xt2. Still use it on xt5. Can you retest using largest zone with face/eye detect and continuous af. Only use zone. Don’t use the entire sensor area
After owning several Fujifilm cameras XE-4, XT3 andXT5 I finally so fed up with the poor autofocus (shooting my Grandkids and my dog) I bought a Sony A7CII which has been brilliant - brilliant video by the way 👏👏
I don’t use my X H2s or X T5 with that kind of subject tracking like you did so af is fine for me. I shot a wedding with the X H2s and I got so many great shots out of thousands using the 50 140 and 56mm wr 1.2. My af hit rate was 95% plus. But yes that sucks as far as the results you got. Canon and Sony definitely are much better in that regard.
Note that the X-H2S has better AF performance than all the 40MP cameras of the same generation, because of the faster sensor readout speed. The X-H2S calculates the focus more times per second than the X-H2 (and probably the X-T5).
@@fvsch I have the X T5 and x100vi. Af definitely not as good as X H2s for sure. But both are great af when not using caf tracking. For portraits and street photography they’re fine. I’ve just accepted the fact that I’m not using these cameras when good caf is a necessity. I’ve had the Sony A7iv and R6. Great cameras but I feel like I’m using a hammer vs the precision forged instrument feel of the Fuji’s.
a very fair test that just confirms other channels reviews of the failing of the Auto focus on the 6th Gen cameras. it seems that every new update makes it worse not better. I have the XH2s and it is great for regular photography - but only in single focus and not with video. I'm a bit naive I guess, because I think a camera should just focus reliably on all types of movement without needing 6 different custom AF settings. It seems like a crutch for, and a cop-out by fuji.
I think that the problem itself is not the camera, it is that when choosing one you have to ask yourself, what type of photography will I take? I highly recommend it for studio photography, especially portraits. Or travel photography. But if you are looking to do wildlife, wedding or sports photography then there are other brands for it. You have to remember that Fujifilm sells you an experience in itself, if its cameras take photos when you take them out of the box like some brands. Then it would take away all that challenge of the cameras of yesteryear. And that's the beauty of the market, there are cameras for every type of user. And I think that is a positive thing.
I am glad i came across this video. I shoot full frame but hate having to use large lenses so I was going to switch to APSC with Fuji XT5 but might lean towards a Sony 6700.
I remember when i got the xt3 and a7iii at the same time the XT3 eye AF wasnt good. Here we are yrs later and every manufacturer has advanced except for Fuji. My XS20 is much better than the xt3 that i sold but its still not a major contender in the AF department.
@@Aaditya1ad I primarily do photo. Its definitely much better than my XH1 and my XT3. I still use my XH1 on manual mode for video at my office. My XS20 is my family, vacation and walk around camera. Mainly shooting people and the environment. It's reliable enough for my uses and it's a fun camera. Personally I don't know if I would use it for any paid shoots just because I wouldn't want to lose any photos.
Thank for making this video. Too many Fuji content makers seem to be very quiet about this..... I actually think the AF performance in the xt5 is worse than in my xt3......
I’ve been experiencing soft focus on my X-T5 as well even when the green box confirms focus. The latest firmware seems to have made things worse. Thank you for creating these tests. I’m not satisfied with what we are getting and I agree that excessive tweaking should not be required to achieve consistent focus. There are so many things that I love about the X-T5 but autofocus is not one of them. I’m waiting for them to get this right but my patience is running out.
Ive done photo shoots with my xt-5 and I could say that I was shocked to find out the auto focusing wasn’t as great as I thought, I blamed it on the lens wich is a 35mm f2 but I still managed to get the shots that I needed and I just had to take more pictures
Has it ever been addressed why there are 6 different settings that the end user has to tinker with instead of just one auto focus that incorporates all the different scenarios into it? I don't shoot Sony or Canon so maybe you know....Do they also have all these different auto focus custom settings or does the auto focus just....auto detect and work?
This is exactly what I live. I love Fuji. But shooting sport is a pain with XT5!!! I have a rendez-vous this morning to switch to Canon for my sports activities. I am so sad. Thank you for this demonstration and saying in public what we are living with our Fuji camera. You completely right. Fuji please stop develop Instax and so forth... Please, invest R&D to develop expert/pro level camera.
I agree 100% with you. I own a X-T5 , XF 33mm F1.4 and a XF70-300mm . Autofocus works good for stationary subjects and with small movements. But not good for fast moving subjects and video. Other than autofocus issues, everything is great. If Fujifilm can give me a proper firmware which will solve these issues, then I will be 95% satisfied with X-T5 from my current satisfaction level of 75%
I'm testing out a Canon R8 for the same reason. Its coming today from B&H. Full frame, incredible auto-focus, smaller/lighter than the XT5, etc. We'll see how I like it. I love my XT5 but I don't trust it.
@@wesleychapman9001 I had X-S20 and sold it for Canon R8 which is much better in everything. I added now Fuji X-E4 as it's where Fuji shines in my opinion.
@@MrRafalEn good to know! Fuji's film recipes and JPEGs won me over because I'm not one for editing photos much. I love the shooting process and wanted great photos SOOC. That being said, I have a lot of EF and RF lenses at home, just no Canon camera haha
Well just used an XH2S at a major dog show recently. Epic fail. Way too many dropped images due to missed focus. Even used a brand new 150-600mm. Terrible hit rate. So sold off my Leica SL2 and 4 SL lenses. Will keep the Fuji but going Canon R5ii and the R1 when it drops. Sorry I left the 5DM4 yrs ago.
It is said that x-H2s with the stack sensor has better AF tracking. But i think i am going to go xt5 anyways to upgrade from my xt4 because can't afford to go cf express for dual card setup. I'll just have to live with the "usable" AF tracking performance
@jcar4522 no. Single cf express and one sd. I shot raw + jpeg both to different card because if i do it on single card and connect to iphone. The photo app is a bit dumb and makes it difficult to just import jpeg as it always want to take raw. And i don't always want to import raw to iphone for quick upload. I now write raw to my uhs2 card and jpeg to uhs1 card on my xt-4. Cf express card now is too expensive for me even for single card
Thank you for this video. I shoot with that Canon R6 mark 2 and the Fujifilm X-S10. I enjoy shooting with the Fujifilm when I what to slow down. The Canon is for everything else. I did not upgrade the Fujifilm for this exact reason. Fujifilm definitely needs to work on the AF, film simulation dial on the camera was a miss.
I dont take fast objects so I am super happy with my fujifilm X T 5 . If people are expecting more then go and get a LEICA. Fujifilm in Turkey told me that a new update is coming. My friend didnt update my camera for this reason.
I don't want to give any advice because i can't. I don't have much experience 😄But what about the performance "boost" mode in all the fujifilm cameras menu, which is set to "normal" by default? Does it make any difference in performance? I've always wondered what this setting is doing. People are not talking about it in camera reviews 🤔
I have the 33mm on the X-s20 and I haven't updated it yet. AF-C is terrible as you've shown, good thing it isn't my use case. Another thing I found baffling is my sigma 18-50mm has a better hit rate than my 33mm LM when using single autofocus. Maybe something is wrong with the 33mm lens on top of Fuji's already bad autofocus.
@@testyep5031 misses a lot on AF-C. Very satisfied with single autofocus. It lives on my camera if I know I'm not shooting at night. Otherwise, I use the 33mm.
Great video. Although I mostly shoot manually using my vintage film and modern digital rangefinders, I do enjoy shooting with my X-T5 when I feel like I need to capture fast moving subjects consistently. However much I love my X-T5, the disappointing autofocus software is abysmally inaccurate. I hope Fujifilm focuses on R&D for this critical tool.
Thanks for this. Using an older xe3 and about 1/2 the shots are out of focus. Thought it was me, but likewise the green box says it’s focussing on the face but then it’s the ears or the shirt. Was gonna update to the xh2 but I think I might look elsewhere.
@@Iamtongue the consistency goes up. It is stupid and should not make a difference but it is noticable. When I upgraded my XT-5 firmware to the 3.01 it turned this back on and it was a noticable step back until I realized it and turned it back off. It is still not 100% and I completely agree with you that Fuji needs to focus on this. Pun intended. I have not done a dedicated test to pinpoint this but I will try. I will try and post a video if I can get the time to. As long as you promise to watch. Lol
When in playback mode you can tap the display button then up on d-pad to see extended info. The small preview in top left will show you where the AF system focused with a ‘+’ crosshair. I agree though, the AF is almost there but the latest firmware broke something.
Thank you for all your tests and speaking up about it. I am so frustrated with Fujifilm and I feel depleted. I don't even want to go out shooting any more. I have x-t3 with 100-400 which was a big spend years ago and I got lots of great shots of birds of prey mostly not moving. Wanted more read so bought 150-600 this year but now I want birds in flight. Hesitantly trusted fuji with the x-t5 with bird subject detection, I already have the lenses. I was excited to see green box on birds eye flying around ... omg I can't wait to get home. Get home and it is all shit!!!!! Over and over technique, settings watching other reviews, back out and then same garbage. The 40 mega pixel sensor I find noisy when it gets even a little dusk like in wildlife, I'm not happy with the sensor or is it the focus...fffff I don't know anymore. I want to love my fuji, I look at other cameras thinking of changing but I love fuji colors, fuji style. Not buying anything else fuji for a long time till it absolutly works. I may even buy ........ SONY!!!!
You should, to be honest, vintage bodies like Fuji ones are made to idiots like me to avoid going to other camera brands like Sony, but... Do you want a good result or a beautiful camera? No excuses, stop making the same camera (xt-50, xt-5, x100vi...) and shitty lenses (16-50 f4'8???? Who tf want that) and fix main things to make Fuji a professional camera brand...
The false confirmation is definitely a thing. The person could be standing and the lil green box confirms focus and when I go back to look at the photo on my laptop it is completely out of focus
The new firmware did this to my XH2. Regular AF is still fine, but when you're using any kind of tracking like eye, face, animal etc. It says it's in focus but you see later that it wasn't.
I bailed on a pair of XT-5's and went to Nikon, it is what it is Fujifilm are more invested in getting product to the market, without refining the system. Most Fujifilm users are more wrapped up in the latest recipe and vacation snaps to worry about AF.
I said it before I don’t feel the autofocus on the xt5 is any more reliable than my XT2. I agree with the other comments that said the auto focus misses even on static subjects.
I take photos of my 1 y.o dog running towards me / jumping every week, and it took me a good three weeks before I settled on settings that give me a 90% hit rate with my XT5. I was using custom AF settings! Honestly was wondering if I needed to swap to Sony which is known for good AF. I am deep into the Fuji system but man - We need some good AF updates now.
👍!!! The most usefull vidéo i watched about fuji. I have an old canon 550d with only 9 autofocus zones, i'm happy of it's image quality but bored by the autofocus that make me have 60-70% of good focus with my 3 years old child running every where. That's why i wanted to buy an hybrid. I was hyped buy the fujifilm xt5 picture quality, colours and that it has an improved autofocus, but i realise that it's not yet enough. If it can't take around 80-90% of good focus, the auto tracking subjects is not usefull to me. It would be too frustrating. So i'm waiting next year camera releases...
Good video. Others have been out there complaining without providing as scientific a piece of analysis. Sadly, I am unconvinced that Fuji will do anything soon on this. They’re shifting product, they can’t build the units fast enough, so fixing an AF system that folk tolerate isn’t going to motivate them as much as getting new products out there.
Update : firmware update 4.0 is released, in the mean while I’ll be making a video about this so please report back in real time your thoughts if autofocus issue has been resolved.

Sounds liek I am going back to using single point AF
The green lying box gave me aids
Yes, I do agree with green box!
@@Iamtongue might as well get a dslr from 2008. The af-s is more reliable on those lol
this is sadly true...
Exactly!!! It shouldn’t be this hard! Something that I can use straight out of the box.
The Fuji on the other hand has two issues:
Thanks for speaking on our behalf......Fuji should stop making cameras and focus on their autofocus.
Absolutely spot on. I love Fuji but autofocus is just awful. This needs to change.

Good point!
Couldn't agree more with how frustrating this is. My iPhone photos look sharper more often because of how Fuji constantly just misses by a little - even with stationary subjects. Shooting with the XS-20 and the fuji 18-55mm f2.8-4.

Reliable autofocus is one thing. But overall reliability? Fuji definitely needs to work on that.
agreed

I don’t wanna throw the whole AF under the bus, but it does need work. I don’t know the full specs of what the new generation processor is supposed to handle and can handle, but I do wish the updates came faster.
We all should buy a Sony... Thats what happens when a brand does not work on real improvements... And main and basics things we all need..
And actually the 1.0 and 2.0 software were actually really good on the xh2s, 3.0 was okay too, And apparently 5.0 was okay for some stuff as well. But yeah, it's just a frustrating prospect.
Ya it’s not you man.. it’s fujifilm
I have tried all settings without any satisfactory improvement. But thanks for the tip
I've got a crazy setting for focusing on people on my X-H2 that works for me.
1. I always leave Subject Detection OFF, as if it didn't exist!
2. Focus mode: AF-C
3. Sutter AF > AF-C: OFF -> This disables focus when the shutter button is pressed halfway.
4. AF Mode: Spot, the biggest
If the subject doesn't move much, or moves parallel to the camera, I use BBF (Back Button Focus) by pressing once with my thumb, releasing, recompose and shoot.
For me sony a7rV still slow compare to a9 but it better than fuji ofcouse
My feeling with autofocus does not change after your video. I bought the x-t5 knowing that the af is not at same level of other main brands, because it is more important for me the ergonomics, size, and lower cost of lenses w.r.t. the af in sport photography.
But yes, an improvement would be very appreciated, given that according to the results of your tests (ear often in focus) the prediction of focus point seems to be the real problem.
To be honest, it's the false positives/false confirmations that infuriate me. I can live with slow AF as long as green AF indicator/box really means = focus nailed.
@@krio. exactly just dont lie to the user.
Hi, Tongue.
I turn Pre-AF on(as a rule) when using continuous so I can get better hit rates.
Not sure if it will make a difference, but give it a go.
I turn on Pre-AF with AF-S and find that I get more keepers in point and shoot scenarios.
@@shy-guy5544 It works just as well on AF-S ,however it disables the Focus Zoom which I use a lot on AF-S
It is not the point of the video
Never updated mine. Mine seems to be good so far.
Nah, its not you, its Blurryfilm
Totally agree with your findings and will not buy another Fuji camera until this is resolved. I am sick of it.
Why do you need these 2 cameras? Just put a 23mm f2 on the XS20 and you have the same result
@@testyep5031 Ordered the X100VI first on 3/23/24 (still waiting delivery). if X-S20 worked out may cancel the X100VI order. Given how long the delivery time is do not want to regret canceling the order.
If he wants 2 cameras let him have it haha nothing wrong with that
My biggest gripe with fujifilm, is the IBIS, AF, and the exposure shift when you zoom.
It’s truth.
My a7cii with my 50 f1.4 gm doesn’t miss! Hardly ever!!
@@Iamtongue it’s money.
I’m not a video shooter so was happy with Fuji’s autofocus five years ago, and I’m still happy with it today.
then buy old cameras, whats the point on justifying old technology?
I have heard that fuji processor is still a generation behind the competition
Even thought a6000 wasn't perfect in every situation, it performed significantly better than the XH2s that has much newer and advanced processor. ruclips.net/video/K0ub7poyQPA/видео.html
With Fuji, it was never the hardware, it was always the AF algorithmn, or to be more precised, their coder.
For example, it registers f22 instead of f1.2 ...
aiyoo... kena tunggu fw baru la boss
I do agree, thanks for mentioning. I want to add another big problem, the EVF coating of some of the XT5, XH2 and XH2s. Have you already heard about that? Seems it affects the cameras from beginning/summer last year.
Really..? What seems to be the problem with it?
I recently sold my X-T5 and all my lenses and moved to the Nikon ZF and this was one of the big reasons.
My largest complaint is the false positives. If the box is green it should absolutely be in focus, yet that’s not always the case and I’ve missed some great shots just because I trusted the camera to work as expected.
The ZF autofocus has really shown me what I have been missing, it’s fantastic and sticky and is really simplifying my photography in a way that makes me shoot more.
Does it get the Iris?! 😀
Fuji cameras are fun but with the price tags rising on their basic offerings you would expect better than 50% hit rate.
I agree!
I've got a H2s with the same problem. It looks like it's locked on the bird's eye, but it is not in focus.
How is this working for you? Feels like its working for me.
@@ishysamaniego5880 Zone is the only way yo go on a Fuji if you want continouis autofocus that works.
It is a cop out for the fan boys who’s gaslighting all of us who criticized their af system.
And I think that is a positive thing.
xD rly jezus christ bro
I am glad i came across this video. I shoot full frame but hate having to use large lenses so I was going to switch to APSC with Fuji XT5 but might lean towards a Sony 6700.
I have a Sony a6700 for review and I honestly love how reliable it is. Except the Sony colors are horrible still lol
I remember when i got the xt3 and a7iii at the same time the XT3 eye AF wasnt good. Here we are yrs later and every manufacturer has advanced except for Fuji. My XS20 is much better than the xt3 that i sold but its still not a major contender in the AF department.
How is your experience with af? Video and photo with people as subject
If Fujifilm can give me a proper firmware which will solve these issues, then I will be 95% satisfied with X-T5 from my current satisfaction level of 75%
same here!
I'm testing out a Canon R8 for the same reason. Its coming today from B&H. Full frame, incredible auto-focus, smaller/lighter than the XT5, etc. We'll see how I like it. I love my XT5 but I don't trust it.
I almost got an R8, but got a XS-20. Wish I had stuck with Canon.

Do you mean dual cf express? I have the h2s and It has only one cf express card; the other one is an sd card
Wanted to buy the X-H2s. But now i am leaving the system, going for the Canon R8...
Hi @Iamtongue
Thanks for the video. Do you also have these problems with the X-H2s? Is it better?
I have the 33mm on the X-s20 and I haven't updated it yet. AF-C is terrible as you've shown, good thing it isn't my use case. Another thing I found baffling is my sigma 18-50mm has a better hit rate than my 33mm LM when using single autofocus. Maybe something is wrong with the 33mm lens on top of Fuji's already bad autofocus.
How do you find the sigma 18 50 and xs20 combo, is the AF good or still miss alot
Also great vid!! And appreciate your attention being brought to this 👍👍
No problem!
Thanks for this. Using an older xe3 and about 1/2 the shots are out of focus. Thought it was me, but likewise the green box says it’s focussing on the face but then it’s the ears or the shirt. Was gonna update to the xh2 but I think I might look elsewhere.
Did you turn the AF+MF off? That seems to make the biggest difference for me.
How so?
@@Iamtongue the consistency goes up. It is stupid and should not make a difference but it is noticable. When I upgraded my XT-5 firmware to the 3.01 it turned this back on and it was a noticable step back until I realized it and turned it back off. It is still not 100% and I completely agree with you that Fuji needs to focus on this. Pun intended. I have not done a dedicated test to pinpoint this but I will try.
It says it's in focus but you see later that it wasn't.
cannot be trusted!
I agree to this video. Fujifilm xt5 AF has got worse after the update. Af-C, traking (eye/face) its bad now.
Yup your right, Fuji needs some work. You can get better focus out of the Fuji if you use single spot and keep it on the subject. (XH2)
Well said!
