    Another interesting comparison. Edifier R1700BT is remote controlled multimedia speaker with bluetooth connectivity, where Presonus Eris E4.5 is a compact studio monitor. Which sound better? For me E4.5 is more neutral and balanced thus it would be my choice for music listetning in nearfield. R1700BT is great for multimedia use on desk, as well as a TV speaker replacement, with sound tweeked towards enjoyability. What do You think? Comment and ask Your questions in comment section. Well, R1700BT is 8/10 and Eris E4.5 is 8/10 too - it's not really helpful ;) But I assume, R1700BT is some kind of "high end" in it's category while E4.5 is a "entry level" monitor, am I right?

    • @DSAUDIOreview
      @DSAUDIOreview  7 лет назад +9

      +Georg Mierau More or less. Two different approaches to sound, Edifier is bassy and warm sounding while Presonus is clearer, more natural and more honest. My choice for desktop audio setup would be Presonus as I like honest sound more.

      I agree with you, Presonus is clearer and has better soundstage while R1700BT has more bass punch, Presonus have more accurate sound.

    Great video ! These are the two brands I've narrowed it down to and it's a tough choice ! Both sound great, but I think in the first segment the Edifier sounds better, but the rest the PreSonus wins. It sounds open and fresh, whereas the Edifier sounds boxy. I was hoping for the Edifier to win because they're prettier to look at, but it's about the sound.

    Thank you for the comparison ! Although some people are going to complain that you can’t really ‘hear’ the speakers over RUclips , these tests do give a fair idea on how speakers compare with each other. I am looking to upgrade my computer speakers and these two are my top picks. I intend to use them only to listen to music and gaming. Eris e4.5 seems to be more technically correct , but the vocals and highs do feel a bit too sharp for my taste . I am sure they would make excellent studio monitors but for extended listening , I feel R1700BT would be a better choice.Just my two cents

    I use my r1700bt for video editing and listening to music ... at my age I doubt I could really hear the difference. I couldn't find the Presonus model I wanted here in Saigon, and went with the Edifier. I couldn't find the model of it either (r1280t) and wound up with the r1700bt. I will say it has helped with my dialog editing. I don't mix music.

    a impressão que tive é que o Edifier tem um som bem mais equilibrado e os graves mais cheios, porém o Presonus tem as frequências altas mais definidas e produz mais harmônicos. São dois ótimos monitores, acho difícil escolher entre um, mas acho que por um todo (pelo meu gosto pessoal) a Edifier é melhor.

    I would recommend listening original audio files through a pair of (at least basic) monitor headphones and then compare it with both of these. The exaggerated bassy sound is felt because of the bass port of edifier located at the front. Edifier is fuller and better in my opinion.

    The E4.5 speakers are way too bright (or lacking bass), I want to turn the volume down. The 1700BT speakers are less clear but I want to turn the volume up. I think E4.5 will fatigue my ears quite fast, the 1700BT will not. The signatue sound of the 1700BT does something I really love, even though they're far from perfect. Btw, your channel is fab, I subbed as soon as I found it. Thank you very much!

    Weirdly, I watched this video originally with PC speakers (Creative Audio T30) and the difference seemed pretty much in the favour of the Edifier, but I bought the Presonus Eris E4.5 anyway (on advice from someone who has a home studio) and later watched this video again through the E4.5 - wow - the Edifier sounds awfully constrained and compressed. Glad I chose the 'right one'!
    The Presonus has gain controls for the highs and mids. You can use the mid control for a bass boost for games/movies where you want to color the sound deeper. Another reviewer called those two gain dials the 'secret party mode', and they are!
    The Eris 4.5 is the perfect speakers for listening to music 'the way the original artists heard it', and perfect for gaming/movies once you color the sound for more bass and less highs.
    Oh, and if you have any bass boost on your sound source (such as on a phone or Spotify, etc), turn if off when you use these speakers; you don't need it and it makes monitor speakers sound broken... but its actually your sound source that is broken.
    Only downside is if your sound source is rubbish, these speakers will let you know!

    • @dreadlock17
      @dreadlock17 2 года назад

      Edifier has bass and treble control as well

    • @shambhangal438
      @shambhangal438 2 года назад

      @@dreadlock17 Yes, but on most monitor speakers (such as the Eris) they are not called bass/treble controls (as monitors are not supposed to be 'colorable'). The ones on the Eris are actually gain controls to allow for local conditions, so many will miss that they 'work as bass/treble', particularly because they are hidden at the back of the unit! My bet is that this demo did not not use them at all on the Eris, so the Edifier will appear more bassy simply because the Eris is being driven uncolored.

  • @a1naruth

    Presonus sound much clearer and brighter. It is so good that you tested them with so many different songs. Because this bright sound just gets annoying and.. empty? in some types of music. I know it is probably degradation and distortion of sound spectrum, which is present in Edifiers, but subjectively they produce more pleasing sound. Of these two I would go for Edifiers, when choosing speakers for casual listening to music.

    i had both of these speakers and i confirm that eris 4.5 has cleaner more transparent mids but lacks bass (warning : r1700bt is super boomy on default bass settings and is congested and muddy in the mids ). both has a slight hiss you can hear if you are less than 2 feet away so no problem as we are about 3 feet away when used as pc speakers on the desk. i also had the slightly more expensive and better sounding in all ways, jbl 305 but they were really too big for my desk. best solution i found in the end for desk PC audio setup is replacing these $100 - $200 small near field powered speakers with a $30 iem (cca c12 for example ) that offers exciting subbass and more detailed and cleaner sound at one fifth of the price, it also helps with cutting pc fan noise and street noise as it reduces external sounds while not overheating your ears after a few hours like headphones does. of course with iem you will miss the more natural crossfeed effect you get from speakers that reaches both your ears and you will not be able to watch movies with friends, so as always no audio solution is perfect it is all about compromises - peace, love and music ;)

    Presonus Eris E4.5 are a pair of powered studio monitors while the R1700BT are a pair of powered bookshelf speakers. Both are designed and tuned for different purposes. Presonus are tuned to sounds flat and true accross most frequencies range. The Edifiers on the other hand are tuned for normal listening, sounding bassy and colourful. I'm gonna grab that pair of Presonus just cause if I wanted to use it for normal listening, I can just turn the Bass and Treble knobs. 😂

    Body (R1700BT) vs Clarity (Eris E4.5)
    am I wrong? / anyone agree?

  •  3 года назад +10

    Well, we need to be clear, one of them is basically a professional tool for making music and the other one is for listening, that simple. If the Eris E4.5 sounded bad it would be strange, Edifier on the other hand, is a sound system actually, for listening to music. They are good, very good in fact. Just not as clear and "flat" as the Presonus which is expected. I personally love the bass when I'm listening to music and pretty sure a significant amount of people love too, so Edifier gives that, Presonus doesn't, it has bass but not enough because it has to be that way, u should listen to your own untouched music with them. Edifier is like, "chill body here is the bass and sound I like to reproduce" 😁 Production / reproduction, that's the real purpose difference here.

      If there were some improvement possible for a music, wouldn't the musician already have made those improvements? Since those improvements were done on studi monitors, wouldn't studio speaker be best to listen on. Also, the effect of dsp, etc might be easy to add in monitors, but getting the clarity of monitor in speaker might not be straightforward . So isn't studio monitor always more preferable?

    I bought the R2000DB, which is quite similar to R1700BT I would imagine. Was really pleased with the build quality and overall sound (I'm no audiophile). What I was not pleased with at all was the loud hiss/static that they produced, regardless of whether they are plugged in or not (ie. power only also produced lots of hiss/static). This gets so bad at higher volumes that I can hear it from across the room (3-5 metres away).
    I'm about to send them back and have the Presonus Eris E3.5 on the way. Will try to remember to update this comment once I get those.
    In regards to this comparison, the Presonus sounds much more natural and much more clear and pleasant in mid-high range. Edifier sounds stronger in the lower end, however that makes the higher end sound muffled in comparison. Not sure if this is just the recording/mic setup.

    In my humble opinion I think that for musical production you have to get closer to how the user of that music is going to listen to it. The user will not hear it on a field monitor but rather on standard audio equipment. If you adjust your production according to the near field monitor you will surely put more treble and lower and then it will not sound natural in a home audio system.

      There are two important issues that have not been clarified
      1. The Edifiers have a bass knob on the side and we don't know where it was set
      2. all of the speakers are set very close to the back wall. The Edifiers are front ported so that won't bother them but the Presonus are rear ported and the wall will mess up their bass response. Rear ported speakers should be at least 1 foot from the rear wall.

      just get the R2000DB. The price difference is not much and you get a more premium build, larger woofer, tighter sound, better bi-amplification (120W RMS) and a better frequency response (r2000DB goes down until 55hz). R2000DB also has classic mode so you can select if you want flat or Dynamic sound. The 1700BT sounds like it has Dynamic on all the time.

      I have not heard the R2000BT so I will not comment on them. E5 has the loudest hiss of the bunch, next up is E4.5 and the quietest is the R1700BT. Digital Stereophony Presonus eris 4.5 has a AB class linear amplifier, but the amplifier of Edifier is a D class. Presonus eris 4.5 is a budget home version of studio monitors in comparison with his big brothers, while Edifier r1700bt is one of the best product of this company, but still doesn't have a flat true sounding which you need for mixing of recording and you can hear clearly the colorized sounds of a pair of (good) multimedia speakers. Becouse it is a multimedia speaker! I like Edifier speakers and i had a pair of Edifier r1900tii. It doesn't mean that multimedia speaker are bad, just they are not designed for professional audio editing usage.

    They have nice clean sound and balance, but a bit harsch, too forward and.. empty, if you're into electronic/hip hop music.

      Eris has some EQ controls on the back and I find they can help a lot in cases when you want a bit warmer sound with less forward mids. Of course, you can't get the strong bass out of it, but then it's better to have a good subwoofer anyway because Edifier's bass can be more boom than quality.

    The R1700BT is advertised as a bookshelf speaker. The Eris is advertised as a studio monitor.
    Hence why the Eris sounds clearer and brighter and the R1700BT sounds more coloured
    I would say the speakers will suit the persons particular needs. If you are doing lots of video editing, audio mixing and require as much sound clarity and transparency as possible, the Eris is the go to choice.
    But if you are casual listener or someone who puts music as he goes on his business in his office, the colour and warm bass from the Edifiers may appeal to you more.

    Sorry, again, the Presonus just seem a lot more accurate throughout all frequencies. The Edifiers seem a bit hollow and shallower in sound.. not as full. They also tend to sound a bit tinny at the brighter frequencies. This can fool your ears into believing the Edifiers are more clear, but that's just because the fullness is drowned out and all you hear is more hiss from the tweeters. The Presonus hold more of the sound and fills you with a better range at close distance. Remember, these are meant to be studio monitor speakers, so you should be just a few feet away while listening and absorbing every single note, vocal and octave. In my opinion, the Edifiers just fall short in this respect!!! Forget loudness, accuracy and fidelity... then maybe the extra fifty bucks in your pocket will make you happier than a much better audio experience!!!

      R1700BT - Multifunctional speakers for your everyday needs
      Eris is designed as active studio monitor, for completely different audience. Of course shouldn't sound the same. One is for relaxation and other is for work.
