I am extremely happy to see Jay on your show, Austin. I have known Jay personally for quite some time and have always found him personable, gracious, and cordial. I also know Jay is highly passionate in his defense of the Faith and many people appreciate that - some can't take it. I do not take sides easily, for example I consider a certain carrot topped "apologist" who is technically on our side as beyond mentally ill while I have friendly exchanges with Catholic and Protestant apologists who have reached out but continually harping on a single event in Jay's debate history after he publically apologized is, quite simply, being the Prodigal Son's older brother. If the Reason and Theology crew are so concerned about you hosting Jay, I would assume it has to do with their pathetically low view counts due to their addiction to drama and largely underwhelming content. Who wants to tune in each night to hear yet another slow, bitter, and repetitive rant from Michael about his brief time in the Orthodox Church? Do you?

Really excited for this interview. Always great interviews on this channel, and Jay is one of the most articulate Orthodox apologists out there. Should be a fascinating discussion - I expect the haters are upset because if Dyer has a civil discussion with someone holding different beliefs, it'll blow a hole in their narrative.
Probably my favorite scripture on Theosis is 2 Peter 1:3-4, below: "As His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust."

First saw Jay when he beat up on this weird French Canadian guy named JF in a debate on Andy Warski's (now banned) channel. Smart guy. He's also pretty good at impressions.
For all of Jay Dyer's supposed meanness, I notice it's only one side trying to cancel other people out. It comes off as underhanded and desperate by R&T.
Yesterday was the service of Forgiveness Vespers which is the official kick-off of Lent in the Orthodox Church. In the Rite of Forgiveness every person in church asks for forgiveness from every other person in church by bowing or making a full prostration before the other and saying, “Forgive me a sinner” with the response being, “God forgives and so do I.” It is an incredibly moving tradition that gets everyone on the right footing to enter this penitential season. You know what would be a beautiful sight? If Jay and Michael and Erick of RT said those words to each other. Idk, maybe Austin can host them on GS so they can wipe the slate clean and start fresh?

I have bern inquiring both into Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy for a while so it will be great Congratulations on your engagement Many years
Hi Austin, I noticed in one of the comments you said that the apparent lack in Orthodox missions was an issue for you. This is likely because the Orthodox Church sees its existence in the West as a mission field. In addition, many of the post communist “Orthodox countries” are also mission fields seeing a massive turning back to the Church. The Church is really taking off in Africa, particularly east Africa, the Congo (link to docco at the end), Nigeria and South Africa. There are missions spreading in China, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Pakistan and Korea (north and south). The mission in Japan is over 100 years old and well established, look up Saint Nicholas of Japan. My diocese (New Zealand) runs a mission in the Pacific, particularly Fiji, Samoa and Tonga. The Church is growing via conversion in Europe, particularly France, Italy, the UK, Germany and Poland. I hope you enjoy this documentary about the Pascha feast during political unrest in Congo. m.ruclips.net/video/JY3N_wf28UI/видео.html
It's important to note that for the Orthodox Church, neither worship or "spreading the good news" is seen as the purpose of being a Christian. That leads to different priorities.
Austin! Your channel is amazing. I was scrolling through your content and it is absolutely top notch! Congratulations and I’m very happy you have so much orthodox content that’s very substantial!
I was challenged by the idea that if I'm going to talk about loving across the lines, then I need to actually do it. It might be growth, it might be foolishness. I suppose we shall see

After discussing with Patrons and other RUclipsrs I really respect, including some Jay has voiced disagreement with, I’ve decided to go forward with the interview.
You ask a good question that I've been pondering myself about the approach to theology in the East versus the West and whether it can be called "systematic." If the definition is simply that there is coherence, then I think you could call Eastern theology systematic. I think the difference is that there is far less speculative theology in the East. The principles that we start with are fewer and much more fundamental, and there is an organic realization of them, rather than the innovation you see in the West beginning in the High Middle Ages. Orthodox theology is clarified over time, but it does not develop. I think Western theology can be said to develop, or even innovate, over time.
Excellent interview and so much food for thought. I definitely did have to pause the video to let some things sink in. And, I ordered “Byzantine Theology”. So this was very insightful and beneficial. Thanks!
Hey Austin. I don’t know why you’ve decided that the version of events you’ve got from the R&T crowd is the complete truth, rather than idk listening to the other side? I don’t think you should let yourself be bullied into calling Jay toxic if you haven’t even talked to him about these things
@@mamafortuin he didn’t directly call him toxic. @@nicodemussmith, I appreciate Jay’s work, but his occasional cantankerous and abrasive behavior scandalizes people and it frustrates me how his disagreeable nature is an obstacle to the message he conveys. @@mamafortuin He exercises incredible patience 99% of the time, what are you talking about? Have you seen any of his debates and discussions? Particularly in his debates (which is where these allegations of “toxicity” are concentrated), he demonstrates great patience with people who don’t exactly show themselves to be deserving of it. Imagine playing a sport or a game with someone who repeatedly breaks all the rules and cheats and ignores you every time you try to correct or rebuke them-that’s what Jay often has to deal with when debating people who disregard the formal rules of a debate and refuse to interact with him in the proper fashion. I’m not saying he’s perfect, nor am I saying that he never exercised a sense of humour that some may find offensive. But I am saying that Jay is by no means “toxic” or “uncharitable” in the sense that some slanderers would have us believe, and certainly is not less loving than the rest of us sinners. He’s helped, informed and led many people to Christ and to His holy Church, and in doing so has taught no heresy or doctrinal errors (which would entirely deserve criticism and harsh rebuke). That’s why he has people vouching for him. He’s no saint, but reading the lives of historical saints like Nectarios of Aegina really puts into perspective how a good man can be so slandered and ignorantly misunderstood, even by those in his own community.
Very good and useful interview and Jay Dyer was very clear and knowledgeable about this topic. Compliments to both of you for making this video. I hope there will be more where this comes from. As a Orthodox Christian I am learning a lot from your channels. God bless you both
Saint Cyril of Alexandria explicitly rejected an essence-energies distinction: For if one is not too poorly endowed with the decency which befits wise men, one will say that the divine being is properly and primarily simple and incomposite; one will not, dear friend, venture to think that it is composed out of nature and energy, as though, in the case of the divine, these are naturally other; one will believe that it exists as entirely one thing with all that it substantially possesses.

Do you?
@OrthodoxyChloroQuine It would be an honor to go on Austin's show if he were to extend an invitation. If our content is great, it's because we our viewers are great. 😉

Yes it would be absolutely epic if GS had Ubi on!
I don't think the guys from R&T have a pathetic low count in their videos. In fact, they reached 10k subscribers and were strongly recommended by Matt Frad, which certainly will give them a few thousand more of subscribers. However with that said it is a dangerous thing to expect to be in possession of a ready explanation every last element of the faith.

@@mamafortuin he didn’t directly call him toxic. @@nicodemussmith He hasn´t any problem with Eastern Ortodhoxy, but Jay has been disrespectfull, there you have the interview. It has no value to have theological knowledge if you don´t have love, that´s all it matters, and sadly jay seems reluctant to love R&T in that debate with Erick Ybarra.

Saint Cyril of Alexandria explicitly rejected an essence-energies distinction:
For if one is not too poorly endowed with the decency which befits wise men, one will say that the divine being is properly and primarily simple and incomposite; one will not, dear friend, venture to think that it is composed out of nature and energy, as though, in the case of the divine, these are naturally other; one will believe that it exists as entirely one thing with all that it substantially possesses.
