In this video, Dr. Tim Mackie and I explore the question of what is the Bible, what isn't the Bible, where did the Bible come from, and how should we read the Bible? Tim is the co-founder of Bible Project, one of the world's most popular theology channels. In this video, Tim shares how Bible Project started, what the journey has been like, and what the future holds for Bible Project. Of special interest to my audience, Tim and I discuss what Bible Project has to offer for Catholics and Orthodox Christians as well as the ecumenical outlook of biblical theology. On a personal level, Tim has been one of my most formative influences, and this was an experience I am not soon to forget.

    About Gospel Simplicity:
Gospel Simplicity began as a RUclips channel in a Moody Bible Institute dorm. It was born out of the central conviction that the gospel is really good news, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible. The channel has grown and changed over time, but that central conviction has never changed. Today, we make content around biblical and theological topics, often interacting with people from across the Christian tradition with the hope of seeking greater unity and introducing people to the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel, the good news about Jesus.
    About the host:
Hey! My name is Austin, and I'm a 22 year old guy who’s passionate about the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. I believe that the gospel, the good news about Jesus, is really good news, and I’m out to explore, unpack, and share that good news with as many people as possible. I'm a full blown Bible and Church History nerd that loves getting to dialogue with others about this, learning as much as I can, and then teaching whatever I can. I grew up around Frederick, MD where I eventually ended up working my first job at a church. They made the mistake of letting me try my hand at teaching, and instantly I fell in love. That set me on a path for further education, and I'm currently a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, studying theology. On any given day you can find me with my nose in a book or a guitar in my hands. Want to get to know me more? Follow me and say hi on Instagram at: @austin.suggs

What a delightful conversation. I can't believe I haven't come across the Bible Project before. I will definitely have to check it out.
Tim's focus on the God centered narrative vs handbook approach is an important one. When we lose sight of the theo drama we tend to project our ego into the scriptures. We also lose sight of the wonderful over arching themes and types that conveying deep truths about God. It's a powerful way to introduce non-believers to the truths of the Bible.
St. Augustine summed it up nicely when he stated that "the New Testament is concealed in the Old, and the Old Testament is revealed in the New".

The Bible Project was my first entry into critical Biblical inquiry. I admire Dr. Mackie and his ministry! In 2016, I became Catholic in large part due to the further examination of the Bible that Dr. Mackie emphasizes in his ministry. I know that he’s not Catholic, but I’m still giving the credit where it’s due! The Bible Project ministry took me from a non-Christian, to a Christian, and ultimately led me to explore the mind of the Church such that I entered full communion with the Catholic Church.

Gave His people a huge "twist" to the story when Yeshua came as a humble servant instead of a military leader... and had a triumphant ending when the hero re-appears when all seemed lost. I can sympathize with Dr.Tim's concern about how the Bible is used mainly as a "rule book" about certain behavior i.e. good or bad behavior. Yes, to some extent the Bible is clear with what acts are deplorable and what pleases God but the Bible is WAY MORE THAN THIS. It is first and foremost about God and His pursuit of us, His self-giving, His sacrifice, His triumph, and His power of transforming the world that is starting in our REFORM to being images of Him- becoming Christ-like.
The Bible is about Lord Jesus. This is foundational.
    PS
I like the Bible Project and it helped me also in my reading of Scriptures. As a catholic myself, I hope Dr. Tim may someday do the Deuterocanonicals or what others call intertestamental. This hope stems from the idea that he studies the Septuagint also and since he said he has plans making this a reality.

This is pure gold. I have so much respect for Dr. Tim Mackie; he is so knowledgeable on this topic. I became a Christian 4 years ago, knowing nothing about the bible. I joined an evangelical protestant campus group which was very helpful in leading me towards knowledge in the basic faith questions (ie. who is the Holy Spirit, how do I pray, what is the trinity). But now that I've matured more in my faith, I'm asking more complex questions, one of which is WHAT is the bible and HOW should I view it? I have struggled with this question for more than a year now, flipping back and forth between what seems to be two extremes: either the bible is absolutely perfect and cannot be questioned, or the bible is inherently flawed and should not be taken too seriously. I have never felt at home in either of these camps, and have been searching for a middle ground. Now, I finally feel like there IS an alternate way to view that bible that isn't either extremely conservative or liberal, which takes historical context and the nature of the bible into consideration. Dr. Mackie was right in saying that this in-between view of the bible is more work and not easily digestible, and in fact leads to even MORE questions. Yet, it is our job (I believe) to understand the bible in the way the Jesus would have. If we are trying to model our lives after this man, we should try to understand what his life was like and what his bible looked like when he was here. I am currently reading Dr. Peter Enns, who appears to view the bible similarly to Dr. Mackie. I still have much to learn, but this interview just excites me so much. I am so thankful that this interview was done because I am trying to learn more about this area of theology and it's so hard to find!! Thank you for this content :)

In the week or so since watching this video I have just been devouring the content on both the the Bible Project channel and the Tim Mackie Archives channel. What an amazing resource he is! And I can say - to the best of my discernment and coming from an Orthodox perspective - that his theology is properly (small o) orthodox. And I would consider it (capital O) Orthodox. I would've been the same kind of fan boy interviewing him.
One thing I thought tho during the interview is that as we progress our Biblical knowledge (and others are not) we need to show Grace to those functioning on less than ideal paradigms. Your fiance isn't doing anything wrong, it's a journey that God will take those children to become deeper readers later in life. God is always speaking with the current language that the people are speaking and then calling certain people to move others in a specific direction.
It's hard to imagine that anyone at skatepark church had a PhD in Biblical studies, but boy did they do their job well in sharing Jesus. "We preach Christ crucified" .
    Blessings on this channel!

My Old Testament professor said two things about the Apocrypha. One was that some favorite Protestant doctrines, like predestination, aren’t unambiguously present in the Protestant Old Testament but show up in the Apocrypha. And, when we asked him if he thought we’d ever open the Canon up again he said that at the very least I Maccabees should be included.

Tim is imho the best bible teacher at this time.
He is one of the few people that have a true understanding of the spiritual nature of the scriptures.
While he knows way more than most people give him credit for, he is so humble and relaxed.
A great example of the work God does with the inward man and the spiritual fruits.

As a guy who has read through the Bible annually for maybe a decade and a half and has an undergraduate and graduate education in the Bible, the question of "what the Bibel is and isn't" is so fundamental intellectually/academically and more importantly in my relationship with God. It is so shocking to admit how seeing the Bible as a reference book rather than a relationship book has really allowed me to fail in my relationship with the Lord too often. I wonder if Dr. Mackie and his esteemed colleague John have thought about writing a book about what the Bible is and isn't. Thank you, Gospel Simplicity and brother Dr. Mackie. It was great to hear (around the one hour mark) that the Bible Project will be working on videos feauturing the Protestant Dueterocanon. It is fantastic to hear that a Protestant Audience will come around to hearing some of these works, likely for the first time.
I'm interested to see how the approach will go: his channel may catch flak from Protestants who will consider his featuring of the Dueterocanon to be paying lip-service to "pagan literature"; on the other hand, they will catch flak from Orthodox and Roman Catholic viewers who may consider his treatment of the canon to be perhaps dismissive or disrespectful.
It's a bold move, with likely little to gain. Nonetheless, it is the right thing to do. May God be with them as they begin to work on those videos.
