Thank you for the good video. The short shaft on mine actually pulled right out of the transmission. So it made some parts of my job much easier. 2003 Pontiac, Sunfire.
Hey! Thanks for posting this. Ran in to the same issues on my daughter’s 2003 Oldsmobile Alero and used your tips/tricks on that two piece seal. A mechanic friend of mine said, “RUclips” is his biggest competitor =)
I know this guy posted this 3 years ago, and he prolly doesn’t even have this vehicle anymore. Here’s my humble input, #1, get your self a 30-90mm two jaw bearing puller and pull the the stub shaft out of the transmission, replace the seal and the clips on the stub shaft, and the seal in the trans. You’re not suppose to re-use the circlip anyway, install the stub shaft on the new or old CV axle, install the new or old CV axle back into the trans, and have a nice day knowing you completed the job with little to no drama.
Just wondering what the kind of power steering puller you used was? I was looking up power steering pullers and I can’t find the kind you used. Also do you think that if I pry on the stub shaft if it come out?
Brandon Rayner you might be able to pry the stub shaft out on the right side. The first time I did this job was on a 2006 Malibu and the stub shaft came out with the axle. This time it stayed in but I just left it in and repeated what I did on the left side.
I don’t remember what size it is. I’m away from home today so I can’t look. It’s actually a socket for a hub nut on a truck I had years ago. I don’t think it matters as long as it has a diameter close to what the seal is. Just take it easy and keep it going in as straight and even as you can so you don’t deform the seal. It wasn’t the easiest place to drive in a seal because of the working room.
Sorry. I couldn’t use both hands and hold my phone. I just used that 1 inch deep well socket as a driver and tapped it on with a hammer. Grease the outside so it slides into the seal easily and lightly tap it in with just enough pressure to get it to move. It will stop when it bottoms out. Just take it easy and use some patience. That part isn’t hard.

Thanks for the info, there is none repair garages open in pandemic times here at my town, this info will be so helpful righ now
How do you know when they leak or go bad? Is there fluid on the floor?
Yes. They leak and will leave fluid on the ground.
Very helpful thanks
You’re welcome, glad I could help!
this helps a bunch thank you for the how to
What do you do if the input shaft comes out with the cv axle?
I believe it has a groove on the end with a cir-clip in it. You should be able to just push it back in.
You helped me out thanks
How hard did you have to hit it cause i am scared of damaging something inside the transmission
Are you referring to tapping that “cup” seal onto the shaft?
@@skydude426 yes
@@LuisRamos-kh3cv you have to tap it hard enough to drive the seal onto the shaft. This will not hurt anything.
Can I rent your tool?
so..on the bigger seal did you bottom it out or is there a lip do you mount it flush with tranny or bottom it out?
The bigger outer seal I drove in until it was flush with the transmission case.
What size socket did you use for the outer seal?
I don’t remember what size it is. I’m away from home today so I can’t look. It’s actually a socket for a hub nut on a truck I had years ago. @@skydude426 ok thank you!
i wish you would have shown you putting the insert in instead of skipping past it that was the whole reason i viewed this
