Calling feedback "cancellation" is simply to trivialise the fact that someone has (9/10 times) committed a crime.
People who take their feedback and change after apologising almost NEVER call it 'being cancelled'; they call it "I did a bad thing, and I want to apologise".
Meanwhile, people who commit serious crimes call it "getting cancelled" to make it smaller. To make it a joke. Cancellation is for tv shows, after all! Not for people! It's not a word with serious connotations, and it never has been.
If someone says "I'm being cancelled for xyz" in a serious voice, run away. They are NOT a good person. People who say "I've done something wrong, and I want to apologise" (whether they've been pushed to apologise or not) are far more likely to be accepting of their mistake. They're far more likely to change.
Only bad people actually call their own faults "getting cancelled" as far as I've seen.

    • @ya_fbr
      @ya_fbr 5 месяцев назад +24

i think the conversation extends to the public's reaction as well though. at this stage, it's not just about what the person themself says but also about the general masses of people calling something a cancellation. take idubbbz's situation from like half a year ago. he took accountability for the horrible shit he's said and done, yet people were still moaning about how tit was all a result of cancel culture and he had nothing to apologise for, despite the fact that it was literally his decision to do it and nobody was actively calling him out in that moment.

I think the issue of proportionality and intent is what determines “bad/productive/just cancelling” and “cancelling” that is not. Really disproportionate response on that one. I like to think anyone can change, and change for the good, but also I don't think people with long negative streaks should have a platform, but who's to say when something is really unredeemable? I think the biggest tell is of after the apology, they just do it again...... or they make a ukulele song about what they are getting canceled for.
A good example of someone who should stay canceled is Logan Paul, HE JUST KEEPS DOING IT OVER AND OVER AND OVER.
A person who did something henious but SHOULDN'T stay canceled is Atriok. (The person who was Watching AI p*rn of his friends) because he spent MONTHS using his money to pay for lawyers to get some of that off the internet, and he denounced his fans who said what he did wasn't that bad, and he made a sincere apology was it weird yes very, but everything he did and said after makes it sincere. Making the law stronger against AI p*rn of your likeness after what happened isn't something Jake Paul would EVER do if he was caught with something like that.
Or Idubbdz who stopped making racist comments and saying the N-word in his videos, and again made a sincere apology. Even YEARS after he stopped making those videos.
These streamers who I would argue did worse than Logan/Jake Paul were sincere in their apology, took responsibility and took action that ended up hurting them financially (which depending on what they did I don't think that is always required) I think the biggest sign if the person is sincere is if they denounce and actively reprimand people who try to excuse their actions. Again I don't think that is always needed, but huge green flags if you do something iffy, and denounce the people in your own audience who agreed with that action.

The key word when talking about cancellation is proportionality, for more reasons than one. I don't think it's right for someone to lose their entire career for a mistake they can learn and grow from, but equally, if someone does demonstrable harm to a community they should face consequences. It's a fine line, if something a creator has done is really bad people respond emotionally, which is only natural, but because of that proportionality isn't taken into account. Also when an online response is perceived to be out of proportion with the actions of the creator that can be used by grifters and the like to convince people who aren't involved in online discourse that "cancel culture" is way more powerful than it actually is.

  • @puppykitty69

Exactly! If you don't leave room for forgiveness then you don't leave room to change. I feel like a lot of people don't choose to be ignorant, they just need to be educated in some things. That being said, after someone does something like Coleen for example, there shouldn't be any expectations for victims to forgive her or be the ones to rehabilitate her although that's normally a good way to grow.

One thing that I feel like gets VERY mixed up no matter who talks about cancel culture and those who do terrible stuff is the use of the word of redemption.
Redemption is the processes of growth. Something that only the person that has done the wrong. Saying that someone doesn’t deserve redemption is basically saying they don’t deserve to better themselves which doesn’t make sense because….the goal is to have them be better.
The only time (imo) someone is beyond redemption is if they give up on themselves and double down on their bad behavior (which a lot of creators have done)
What I think people do is mistake redemption for forgiveness or think redemption = forgiveness when it doesn’t…or at least not always.
It’s more accurate to say people like Shane or Colleen don’t deserve FORGIVENESS for their actions….because the only way for someone to truly have their redemption taken away is if they go to prison for life.
It’s up to the person in the wrong to redeem themselves not the victims.

I don't really think it's our job to rehabilitate people in this way. Content creators being successful isn't something they're owed from us, I don't have to accept people. Obviously I don't think these people should be getting harassed(unless they did heinous shit nobody is doing anything about, then it's on sight), but I'm never following Jeffrey Starr or going to make a million excuses for Jenna Marbles either. They did what they did, they decide whether or not to apologize and improve, happy for them if they're genuine and actually do improve, but the marginalized people they've harmed don't have to care either. I don't support Nicki Minaj anymore because she essentially sent her rabid fans after a content creator I watch for simply having an opinion outside of that yes man mentality, Nicki Minaj has a net worth of over $80 million, I don't have to give a damn about rehabilitating her, hell she don't even know my name or the fact I exist.

I think the cause of the person's cancellation is the most important thing, but also, the way they respond to being "cancelled" is important too.
Honestly, sometimes that's more off-putting to me than anything else. A little bit of empathy for the people you hurt (even if unintentionally) goes a long way.

Honestly Atrioc is a really good example of this in that he didn’t have to completely close off his platform to go through reform. For those who don’t know, it was exposed he had checked once on a AI porn site that generated that content for female streamers. This in his words wasn’t to get off but out of curiosity. He initially had a bad response but then took a break from the internet, started up again but made clear to demonize that, and also gave a considerable amount of money to female streamers to help them take down porn sites like that that were improperly using this image. In his response on RUclips months later he didn’t look for fans to forget what he did and acknowledged they were alright to continue not supporting him.
He was looking to genuinely show personal progress and not to plead forgiveness.

This is so true. His controversy was huge in the circles that knew him, it even garnered apologizers (that he did not ask for), but when he returned he clearly explained how he'd worked on his mistakes and helped other people and I think in the end it was the most genuine apology I'd ever seen from a content creator. He took a lot of time and effort to make reparations for his actions and never lashed out at the people who stopped supporting or held him accountable. I have a lot of respect for him for doing a lot more than he probably needed to if he just wanted to make a comeback.

Like a lot of people have commented, I would say it depends on the action. Many of us have made mistakes in our lives and had to countlessly apologize or re apologize for the actions/things we've said. But it's also important that we do acknowledge the faults and not whisk them away.

Haven't finished the video but, when you commit enough misconducts at a company you'd get fired. You don't get to come back. Go work somewhere else. These 'canceled' people can literally just choose a different career.

In my opinion, I don’t think the people listed follow the example of being “child stars that said/did something wrong because of their ignorance”. What these people (Shane, James, Colleen) did was wrong, regardless of their platform.
I agree that people who make general mistakes due to negligence/ ignorance should be given a second chance and should be allowed to learn the error of their ways, but what these people have done were not actions of ignorant children. They were adults that had many years of experience to know better.
Not only that, the people listed actually used their massive platforms to aid in their actions. To give these people a platform once again after they’ve already proven, AS ADULTS, that they cannot handle the responsibility nor the consequences could pose as a massive risk.

This might be an unpop op but "Should You Be Able to Return from Being Canceled?" yes 100%. Unless you've broken the law or a sites TOS there should not be anythign in place that stops you from returning, no way. Howveer "Do you deserve grace because you're sorry?" absolutely not. If your audience decides they can't forgive you its fine. if they can, woopee. but no one is ever entitled to a second chance.

Love your videos Saji, you always make me feel a little less insane about issues I'm concerned about that others seem to just gloss over or dramaticize, and always do a great job of admonishing when necessary but also offering solutions or alternatives so that its not just a hate fest start to finish. It really means a lot to me and helps me feel less and less hopeless every time, so thank you for all you do 💝
I have a question though on something thats been bugging me that I'm hoping maybe the comments can help inform me on. I know next to nothing about Dream, I know I should just be looking this info up and thats my bad but with them popping up everywhere recently its just been nagging me. All I know is that they did a face reveal, then people made fun of their appearance, then they wore their mask again even in public outings and made music about it. Ive heard a lot of talk about allegations, and if they're true thats obviously fucked. But to me knowing nothing concrete, it seems like the internet collectively decided to make someone feel bad about their appearance and started accusing them of horrendous things and none of it has been challenged or addressed. Again, I know nothing about them, I have no connection to their content or anything, and of course this info definitely needs to be confirmed so that victims dont go unheard and they're not allowed to continue this horrendous behaviour. But, if it is just allegations, then what?? The internet en masse can't be held accountable for bullying someone in such a way, this process doesnt really work in reverse. Obviously if there is more concrete info about all of this I'd love to be informed, and even if there isn't anything concrete it absolutely should be looked into. Victims are still victims even if there isn't any proof, and they are the most important aspect of all this, all things told Dream is the one with the platform that we're all aware can be easily abused.
This leads into something else because of the recent twitter drama, everyone seems to be glossing over the things that Cantu(gumball) said in that video. Maybe we're missing context, maybe its an old video, maybe Dream had malicious intent, I dont know any of this. We do know that Cantu was underaged drinking at minimum regardless of when it happened, and that this likely exacerbated mental health issues they struggle with. While all of that may attribute to the reason for that tirade, it is not an excuse, though many gumball fans would have you believe so based on comments I've read elsewhere on the topic. To be clear, I am WAY more on Cantu's side than Dreams on anything that's happening, while I never saw any of Dreams content ive at least watched enough gumball to know I love their voice acting and the characters they've embodied. Also I cannot imagine the stressed involved with being such a young actor of any kind, they've been doing this a while and who knows what their work/home environment is like. I've been an underaged drinker/smoker with mental health issues, I'm not trying to villainize any of that I absolutely sympathize. But I never used slurs as a result of any of that, and the way they're so casually wielded is a concern I feel no one is recognizing. This is a scenario I feel everyone should be held accountable for, but no one seems to want to appropriately address it because Cantu is beloved as a voice actor and Dream is easy to dunk on.
Sorry for the rant and ramble, I'd just appreciate any thoughts or info on the matter as its been driving me crazy since its came to light.

Depends on the situation 'small' things like edgy jokes and such absolutely should be forgiven if they've matured. etc etc. But essentially crimes shouldn't. Being 'cancelled' is probably a scary experience either way, essentially the entire internet turning against you. And 99% of the internet doesn't give constructive criticism if you know what I mean ;)

    • @ChoRen
      @ChoRen 4 месяца назад

“Should be forgiven” is an unrealistic way to view these situations. No one owes creators forgiveness just because the creator’s actions aren’t viewed as “serious enough”.
I find that in conversation surrounding cancel culture, everyone agrees that child predators, scammers, etc deserve what happens to them, but they excuse and downplay “edgy jokes” (which are, more often than not, discriminatory remarks)
Creators don’t even need to apologize for people to insist that everyone forgives them. Some creators double down on the “edgy jokes”, while maintaining that they aren’t racist/homophobic/whatever applies.
I don’t believe people really get cancelled. They get heat for a few months at most, and then they can return with their fans defending them and the internet moving on to the next hot topic. Cancel culture isn’t the threat that people are deadset on painting it as.

a lot of people don’t realize that it’s nuanced and not every mistake is the same. for example saying a slur when you’re a kid is not good, but it’s not nearly as bad as, well, anything shane dawson has done as a grown adult.

I feel like Ethan Klein is another good example of someone willing to hold themselves accountable. He's made MANY mistakes over the years, but has also been very transparent in his willingness to listen and make a change after having difficult discussions. I know H3's not everyone's cup of tea, but they've shown that a platform can be used responsibly even when progress isn't linear.

I think it literally just depends on what they did and how they responded to it. I think the way you respond to being called out is important and says a lot about someone maybe not as much as the actual thing you did but there’s times where I stopped supporting someone who did something less serious than someone else I still support solely because of how they responded. If you respond to being “cancelled “ by refusing to take responsibility for your actions and just being a dick I’m gonna be less forgiving than if someone just admits what they did and apologizes sincerely even if their actions were worse than the one who didn’t (to a certain extent ofc)

a great part of this issue i think is in the the language. that is, the conflating of “cancellation” with the actual genuine downfall that follows actions of criminal behavior or problematic actions. people believe in cancel culture, i think, because of examples of the latter being considered “cancellation”; people genuinely think it’s an effective method of social and economic punishment, when it’s not, it’s just a common response to concrete actions that is especially visual in our media
as always thanks for the detailed and interesting discussion of a nuanced topic saji! always excited to see what the saji subject will be 🩶
