All of your points are valid and I totally agree, but I also just want to criticize their strategy: I’m not a marketing person by any means, but I am admittedly a person who can get a little sucked in by funny ads or pretty packaging (my downfall, tbh), so it just seems to me that it would make more sense to keep his social media 1) funny, 2) true to the original character and 3) drive home the “like a good neighbor” bit.
So in my mind, wouldn’t an approach like, say, mildly absurdist content of him going the extra mile to “be a good neighbor” be more fun to watch? An example: It’s 2am in the backwoods of the Appalachian wilderness and a man with a beard and overalls has a conundrum that only Jake from SF can remedy. He calls Jake, Jake hops in his economy vehicle, the fact that he’s in LA is no match for his deep NEED to be THE BEST GODDAMN NEIGHBOR, and drives all night, up ridiculous hills and dirt roads, etc. When Jake arrives, he gets out of the car, greets the mountain man with a “Hello neighbor! So what’s the problem?!” And our bearded, overalled friend points to like, I dunno, a new deck having been destroyed during a barbecue when a group of forest critters came to crash the party. So then Jake - and Jake alone - cleans up and fixes the whole thing.
And if State Farm is reading this, I will sue the shit out of you if you take my ideas. Hire me you cowards.
