Make OBS Transitions in Resolve - DaVinci Resolve 17 & OBS Studio Tutorial

- OBS is a great tool to use for recording your games or streams or MS Paint, but how do you make it even better? You make custom transitions of course!
Today we take a peek at how I use Resolve 17 to make transitions in OBS Studio. The main takeaway is that you want to use alpha channels. That's going to give you the best look with your transitions. Give it that Pro look.

Excellent video tutorial, I literally downloaded and opened Davinci Resolve for the first time, followed your video and made a great looking stinger transition. Thank you so much.
Casey Faris - One of the most entertaining educators on RUclips. You heard it here first! (that may not be true). Great job, thank you very much for your videos.
I almost spit out my breakfast when you sang your opener. "Casers" you are nuts. LOL. Don't ever change.
oh yes I needed this
Edit: lol I realized you misspelled "transition" as "trabsition"
I had similar problems with transparency on the edit page when doing green screen keying. What I ended up having to do is put a video track below my keyed greenscreen track. I added a solid color generator on the lower track. I set the color to black and the alpha to zero. That worked for me. I think what was happening is that when I keyed out the green screen, the stuff that is keyed out is basically "undefined". It's not "black" and it's not "transparent." It's as if there is literally nothing there which resolve renders as black. So by putting a track below it that says, "the whole screen is a transparent background, you are saying that anything that is undefined in the track above gets replaced by the transparency below. Sounds to me your edit page transitions problem might be similar.
Please do a video on the New Cloud stuff in Resolve 18! You are my sensei, I rewatch your work every week!
Great short tutotials
Thank you so much! You are such a joy to watch and learn from. I’m a twitch streamer and learning how to make this transition will definitely help! Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Casey!
Casey, what people usually do is use chroma green (instead of black or transparent) for the transition. That way in keys out to the next scene.
You're not able to key out the green background in OBS if you're using it as a transition.
I didn't know that you could make transitions in fusion. Nice work as always.
awesome, works great and your instructions were easy to follow. thank you!
Thank you Casey Faris my man
You must have been reading my mind!! I was wondering if you could make video graphics with an alpha channel. YAY!!!
0:48 ""oh boy" nipple pointer changed my life
Thank you! very much!!!
Amazing tutorial, exactly what I needed, thank you Casey
Only problem I'm having now is the transition lags when it's in OBS, despite it having the same frame rate and everything. So now I have my beautiful precious transition but I can't use it won't play nice with OBS!
(I also had to add a second or two of transparent nothingness to the end of the transition because OBS kept cutting it off for some reason, but that's neither here nor there)
This man does not have enough comments.
this was nice, very nice
Amazing! Your videos are so helpful!
i did everything.... but when i inserted it in OBS, it plays slow.... any recomendations?
instead of a picture/png can we use a video instead? i got a funny clip that i want to transition with instead of just a picture/png
Great vid! Any tip to do the other way around? I have a couple of webm files that I use in OBS as transitions (created with After Effects). However, I would like to add them as transitions in Davinci so if I record something without OBS I can still use the same transitions. Thanks for the reply!
my background is as a visual studio developer and a musician using ableton among other platforms. I have recently made a couple of video clips in oneshot. Now using resolve and obs. I dont know them well. Question: you seem to favour fusion. the other youtuber who does obs reckons that is too complex. I dont care which is better: do you think that my s/w dev bg voids his claim that you are better off using obs / edit for animating logos etc?
When I try to make a new timeline in edit mode it deletes everything i just made... I drag the new timeline into the workspace and when i press play its just a black screen, even after i wait some time for it to cache. Can anyone help me with this? I have followed this very wonderful and helpful video to a T about three times now trying to get it to work.
i don't have the same screen you use in DaVinci. Like mine is a full screen version, with no place to drag the nodes to. I'm using DaVinci Resolve version 17.2.2 Build 4 if that helps
What a Chad of a channel.
Thank you bro!
Hi, I followed this tutorial to the letter and paused the video, rewind and played over and over to make sure I have everything exactly.
I tried this and each time it gives me more than 2 seconds even though I put 2-seconds. my settings for the new Fusion composition is
(2)-seconds at (60-fps) in the media pool. I then double click to open it and BOOOM. It gives me more than 2-seconds.
And in the end of the time line the numbers separate very far from each other, looks no where near like yours do even though I did the exact thing you did in the video.
and I have found out after doing some motion that Davinci moves the objects extremely slowly, in the end of the time line. I dont know why DR is doing this, but its very frustrating.
Specially when a person is following a tutorial exactly to the letter but its not coming out the same. I even started a brand new project and deleted past projects to have a clean slate and started over.
I still get the same exact problems. I even uninstalled Davinci , restarted the computer. Reinstalled Davinci and did everything again and same problem persist.
I have restarted DR several times and even tried to reset ALL the settings to normal. This is a brand new install as I have v18.1.2
Hey Casey, Awesome video. I do have one question. Can you take an existing webm file and edit it to change colours in DaVinci Resolve 17? If you can would you be able to do a video on that? Any thoughts on how this can be done?
Thanks. Keep up the awesome content.
I keep getting a failed render "The video format is not supported" or something along those lines. I've tried everything, but I can't get the Quicktime - GoPro/Cineform to render. At all.
GGWP ! this is great
Nice!!!
Having an issue with mine. All I did was a simple swipe from left to right in fusion, and I had the image grow in size. I stream 60 fps, so I marked output for that. The transition in takes 10 frames, and it works perfectly. But for some reason, the swipe to the right at the end doesn't show when I render, and in OBS it doesn't swipe to the right, it just disappears. Anyone else having this issue?
Is it also possible to put sfx under it? Or is the stinger effect in obs only taking the screen effect
Hot question, following those deliver settings and adding audio to the transition, the audio is always weird and clippy, like cutting in and out giving it a crackly feel/effect.
Anyone know how to fix that?
I have had an intro video made for me, which I wanna change into a stinger transition, is there a way to alter a prerendered video (about 8 seconds with sound) or will I have to recreate it in Resolve?
But can you add sound effects for the transition ?
Sure can, through the Fairlight page. It lets you work with up to 2,000 tracks at a time with realtime effects so add as much Foley and FX as you desire 😊🎤🎵
Anyone have any suggestions for keeping the file size down when exporting with the transparency? I've got a 3 second clip set to the lowest quality, and it still breaks 30 megs
I’ve heard a lot of people mention webm is good. I’ve never rendered it tho
@@CaseyFaris i'll check it out, thanks!
Hi
Once purchased, DaVinci Resolve license will be supported by all versions? i.e. 17, 18, 19 etc?
Yes, Studio version of Resolve is a once only fee.
He looks kinda like the guy from flash the reverse flash guy who was evil hahah
Casey, ADD, right? :)))))))))))))))))))
I'm not ready for this. I don't have enough time to keep up with you. :-(

Great tutorial, as always. You are the man Casey!
