All I’m gonna say is that I am more of a Nintendo guy, and I see these “issues” very commonly in the games I play such as Pokemon Arceus and Breath of the Wild, if people are gonna be turned off from a little jerkiness from a distance or is bothered by the pop in and pop out of the backgrounds then people are being way too picky, those are not terrible issues. This game already looks amazing and I haven’t even played it yet, video games are gonna video game, and these things happen in so many of them.
Seriously... like how entitled are people these days? If it's such an issue for them they're more than able to go seek out a ps5. Remember when people used to talk about the things they liked & weren't always so wrapped up in what they didn't like? Seems like forever.
Some people just can't stand stutter though. I can't honestly. You wouldn't put up with it in movies. From need to work within the limitations properly. They've had way more than enough time and experience by now. The craziest thing is, they HAVE a 60fps version on PS5! It's the PS4 Pro version. So why have they released a stuttery PS5 version?? It only looks marginally better too. They basically released the somewhat sketchy version, when they could have released a solid 60 version. It's insane really
I have a 6 years old base ps4, im playing elden ring just like i played ds3 and sekiro. If you're someone who thinks 30fps is acceptable then good for u, this game is just that.
I've been playing for about 5 or 6 hours now and I can say it's a hell of a lot better than darksouls 3's frame rate and pace at first release, it was horrible if you remember, Elden Ring really delivered at launch
This video has convinced me to purchase it for my PS4 Slim! i will come back to this comment in a day or so to give my personal experience with the performance
@@dathunderman4 i have had no lagging or skipping. The framerate stays stable and the only "issues" are the ones that are shown in this video. I have played 7 hours so far, the game is fantastic, and my PS4 Slim which sounds like a jet liner most times has barely made a noise at all. If you are thinking of picking up Elden Ring for PS4 then absolutely do it!!!
Played it for 3 hours on base PS4. It was alright. Graphically and performance wise it was perfectly playable. No wow factor in graphics department, but it's ok.
Thankyou for making this man. I have a base PS4 and keen to get this game but was worried after hearing about PC reviews. I’m a performance noob and I’m also a souls noob. Keen to get it 😁👍🏼
This has been a really helpful video thank you. I was a bit worried about the PS4 performance after the whole Cyberpunk fiasco but I am happy to see how well it seems to run.
Thank you for this! I'm still a little bit on the fence and I'm hoping From will put out a patch to smooth out performance but it looks pretty decent with everything considered. Have fun!
Thank you so much for going with a standard PS4. I always feels so alienated whenever I see gameplay footage for pretty much any modern game because nine times outta ten, it’s gonna look way better then whatever I get.
Have played for about 30 hours now on my base PS4 and never had a problem. No disconnect from servers nor any crashes. Framedrops are there and noticeable but only during very high intensity fights and big boss aoe attacks. So far runs pretty good.
Thank you very much for the video, could really take notes on what was sacrificed for it to run. At 4:36 being the best example, enemies somewhat away have lower frames of animation, but I'm very used to that in fromsoft games. If the loading after dieing is better than Bloodborne's launch, I think it's good. But I would not anticipate updates so soon, since the majority of the problems seem to be on the PC port, and it's the kind of problem that make people refound their game.
Can't wait to get this in my Pro! Yeah there are pop ins and stuff and hopefully it will get patched but it wont stop me from playing the game. FromSoft has never been known for its graphics and to me, the gameplay is what makes or breaks the game. As long as there is no stuttering during bossfights, then im happy.
@@francoisclaassen4971 Same, pop ins seem to exist in a lot of games so it's never really bad. In Elden Ring, it doesn't really break the immersion at all.

I've been playing this on my standard ps4 - apart from the fact that background enemies are animated at a noticeably lower fps is the only "flaw" I could fined (though in all honesty it does not affect the gameplay + looks kinda cool). I fully recommend the ps4 version!
Thanks for this. I feel like this is the first time I've seen software made that wasn't bloatware... like they wrote code in a cohesive manner, so it could run on any hardware. Like... maybe it's been a decade since i've seen any software, apps, to games, that wasn't bloatware, including the company i work for. This bring me a glimmer of hope for the future. One for-profit company has good software devs. One is more than zero, so that's nice.
I appreciate you making this video. I got burned buying the game on PC because it runs very poorly on my machine, but after watching this I'm considering dusting off my ps4 and just try to enjoy the game at 30fps like I did with Bloodborne.
I just got my copy of elden ring in today!! Playing using the disc on the white destiny 2 standard ps4 and the game is running solid so far! And the ps doesn't sound like a plane taking off quiet a matter of fact even during cut scenes!
I really want to play this game but don't have a console or money to invest in a proper PC atm. Thinking about picking up a used ps4 for cheap just for this. Thank you for the video. None of these are gone breaking at all.

Thank you for doing this. Was hoping Digital Foundry would have put up a video on the base PS4 performance, but nope. At least not yet. Seems like that’s always an after thought or just the least important information to put up. I get it, but man, I’d have to imagine there’s still a lot of gamers playing on their base PS4s. I don’t plan to upgrade to next Gen for another couple years at least. Thankful to see it is playable. If I could manage to get through Cyberpunk 2077 on my base PS4 with all of its horrendous issues, I’m sure Elden Ring would seem like a buttery smooth experience.
I'm a guy from the global south who's only ever owned crap PCs and secondhand consoles so i'm used to playing games at low graphics settings and FPS but i've still been pretty anxious to see how well the game would run on a base PS4, just wanna let you know that your efforts are very much appreciated. Also, Onos and a skull for your profile pic? Would that happen to be a Malazan Book of the Fallen reference?
Thanks for showing the base PS4 performance. My old computer is running on AMD FX 8370 and a 980ti amp extreme. Minimum req for pc is a Ryzen 3 3300x and 1060 3 GB. :( Kinda hard making a pc these days since pc parts costs are through the roof. I'll probably get the game on my base PS4.
Monster Hunter Rise on switch did this thing where they would only render enemies in the distance at half the frame rate. Apparently to save on cpu. Looks to be the same thing happening here.

Thank you so much for making those videos and testing the game for us last gen console users! I think that the performance is really good considering that this is a game made for current gen hardware. I wouldn't expect a game like this to tun perfectly in an old console. The only thing I am a but worried about though are the massive main bosses. I still have hope now that on my PS4 pro with an ssd it might deliver a solid performance.
The exact type of video I was looking for, thank you so much! I’ll hold off on buying it for a few weeks, and see if some of these issues get patched :)
The "jerky" animations from NPCs from a distance are completely intentional. It's a performance trade off. If you pay closer attention you will see this in plenty of big open areas in games of the PS4 era (thinking of Monster Hunter World off the top of my head). Basically the animations from a certain distance are rendered at something like half the frame rate of the rest of the game. So you're playing at 30fps but seeing animations in the distance running at 15fps. It's just a performance and optimization thing. I agree it looks goofy if you're really focusing on it.
Thanks alot bro I was so worry to buy this on ps4 As I found that ds3 has some frame rate drops before but this gaming experience is fine for me at least better than days gone wich is what I'm playing these days I'm in Yemen so I will have to wait a lot till the game is here
This is why consoles are great. A nearly 10 year device can still run a very high graphics game. In mobile games, a 2 year old device will struggle or may not run a new mobile game at high graphics settings.
Me and my friend are thinking of getting it and your video helped us decided we will get it Thank you for being clear in how your experience was with the game

I dont have budget to upgrade to any powerful gaming pc at this moment, and still no ps5 available in my area...all i have is ps4, so im so relieved i still able to play this game. Thanks for this video
Played it with the min PC requirements and it was brutal (screen tearing, massive lag and unplayable) but the PS4 looks 1000x better.... thanks for the video
play the PS4 game on a PS5 for the best experience.. better than on a PC.. I have a I9, 3070ti 32g of RAM and still loaded with a mess of framrate issues. This game clearly was targeted at consoles which is great. Do not waste your money on the PC version unless you do not own a console.
Just fyi if no one's pointed it out, the jerky animations in the distance is done in an effort to achieve stable performance. They're animations play out at a lower frame rate than up close objects to save on the cost of rendering the scene. A lot of games implimented it during last gen, less common on the newer consoles.
It runs plenty fine on PS4 the only thing us plebs are missing out on are stunning visuals and load times. So many times my friends are waiting on me cause of load times 😂
I few shakes here n there hopefully won't put anyone off coz the experience and world building completely drew me in, I'm completely in love with its drip feeding story and lore, without constant talking and story scenes, utter genius other games should take note off, it's atmosphere and dread n later in the game completely draws you into and immerses you within its world, no game has captivated me like this within the last 7 years of gaming
You can definitely see some graininess in some character movements. But over all the game looks great and the small stuff can as you discuss, can be fixed with app fixes.
With Elden ring, Gran Turismo seven and the rumored StreetFighter Six coming to PS4, I’m really happy that we’re at least given another Year of grace period to have a PlayStation 4
I've been toying with the idea of buying this game based on all the hype I've read about it but I don't particularly believe everything I read on the internet. I'm still undecided though after watching this.
I highly suggest on your ps4 safe mode, press “rebuild your database” this makes your ps4 game run smoother at least for me. You can find a very easy tutorial on youtube.
This game is so impressive on a base PS4, it's a bit staggering. My son has roughly 45 hours into the PS5 version, and he still gets glued to the sofa when he watches me play it on my old PS4. If you don't own a next-gen console (and you loved Dark Souls 3 & Bloodborne,) please allow this wonderful game to be the well-deserved swan-song for your older console. Then, when you aquire a next-gen console, you can pick it up and enjoy an updated experience. Who wouldn't want to experience this game twice? Great upload! Very honest...
i was surprised as hell how smooth it went with my old ps4 pro, i was nervous about it but it literally seems like it runs exactly how the developer intended, I'd even go as far as saying that this game was built for the ps4 pro

I just dont like the frame drops and stuttering. besides that its pretty decent. they definitly need to patch it on all platforms though (which the most likely will)
Depends on what you’re used to and how sensitive you are to slight stuttering and framerate drops. To me, the game plays like DS3 and Sekiro on base ps4
The biggest differences I found between the PC version, and the older-gen versions (XBOX ONE & PS4), were the weather effects, and also the glowing skulls. The weather effects were 'static' on the old-gen versions; and there were no glowing skulls on the ground for extra runes either. I can understand the weather effects were toned down for a few extra FPS, but getting rid of the skulls hurts the game quality too much I feel. It would be nice if they added them back in. On the old-gen ports.
Yeah. They weren't in the XBOX ONE version, on launch, when I played it. They might have added them since. I haven't played it on the XBOX ONE in a long time to check.@@pudimy
I saw this at Walmart (I cannot commit to New Resident Evil, I'm 37 and the RE2 and 3 Remake were about the best thing I have ever played because it was like taking my preteen nostalgia, adding more content, WAY WAY BETTER DIALOGUE and wrapping it all up in HD with seamless cutscene to gameplay transition...A+++++ But I think the new stuff just destroys the old plots AND BRING BACK WESKER DAMMIT....end of RE rant lol) and at first I thought it was just another Elder Scrolls Saga, but then I read closer yesterday and got a bit excited, because I just beat the RE remakes and Doom Eternal previously to that, so its new game time. They basically released the somewhat sketchy version, when they could have released a solid 60 version. It's insane really
I have a 6 years old base ps4, im playing elden ring just like i played ds3 and sekiro. If you're someone who thinks 30fps is acceptable then good for u, this game is just that.
No Bloodborne? 😅
@@thelennon07 bloodborne runs better than Elden on the base ps4, but it’s also a much smaller game
Does your ps4 sound like a airplane when you play the game?
I've been playing for about 5 or 6 hours now and I can say it's a hell of a lot better than darksouls 3's frame rate and pace at first release, it was horrible if you remember, Elden Ring really delivered at launch
Your channel deserves many more subs. Genuine game coverage
Once again, straight up info and no BS much appreciated!
This video has convinced me to purchase it for my PS4 Slim! i will come back to this comment in a day or so to give my personal experience with the performance
How is it so far?
@@dathunderman4 i have had no lagging or skipping. The framerate stays stable and the only "issues" are the ones that are shown in this video.
I have played 7 hours so far, the game is fantastic, and my PS4 Slim which sounds like a jet liner most times has barely made a noise at all.
If you are thinking of picking up Elden Ring for PS4 then absolutely do it!!!
UPDATE!!
86 hours in and still going strong if anyone is still having doubts.
Its a fantastic game!!!
@@RottingSkeleton i’ve never played a souls game before is it worth giving a go on ps4
@@callumrodgersss3945 doesn’t matter you wont regret it
Okay! Now let's hold on for the Switch port!
Played it for 3 hours on base PS4. It was alright. Graphically and performance wise it was perfectly playable. No wow factor in graphics department, but it's ok.
I have played about 3 hours on my PS4 Slim and damn I am happy.
Thanks for making this! It bothers me how most of the press has left behind previous gen consoles, even though that's what most of us have
Thankyou for making this man.
So, any updates? I'm thinking of buying on my ps4 eventually..
Unlikely, Even PS5, Xbox Series X and top end PCs have pop-ins.
@@stealthyshibe4904 pop ins are fine. Im used to that. Its stuttering that makes me nervous. Especially in a FromSoft game
@@stealthyshibe4904 cant read eh?
@@royalrhythm2471 Nope, still in Kindergarten.
Glad you did this. It's really hard to find ps4 content for elden ring. Thank you!

Everyone I’ve seen playing it is either on pc or ps5 but all I got is PS4 slim so thanks for this vid
I just got my copy of elden ring in today!! Playing using the disc on the white destiny 2 standard ps4 and the game is running solid so far! And the ps doesn't sound like a plane taking off quiet a matter of fact even during cut scenes!
Did u finish the game.
@@aramkqly4555Ya got all the way though! But started a new character! Still have a couple of optional bosses to go back and fight! This game is sweet!
Hey man, I appreciate seeing a PS4 review not just how it looks on high end stuff. Anyway thanks for your hard work lol
I really want to play this game but don't have a console or money to invest in a proper PC atm. Thinking about picking up a used ps4 for cheap just for this. Thank you for the video. None of these are gone breaking at all.
Thank you for the video! I know my chances of getting a ps5 are slim to none, but my ps4 is still chugging away like a champ. I literally just bought the game after seeing how it looks on your vid. Cheers
How do u like it?
This video helped me dearly. I've been debating about buying this for ps4 or not since I heard about the game. This video was super helpful! I really love how you were super thorough and didnt waist time on things that didn't matter! I'm for sure going to sub.
are you gonna buy it?
@@castonio4274 yeah. The only thing I was worried about was weather or not there would be any constant recurring bugs or frame loss. But I got better news then I'd hoped for. Me personally I don't mind the less advanced visuals anyway.. it looks just as good as ds3 and demon souls on the ps4 if not better. So yeah I am going to get it on ps4.
@@V1nN___ It honestly runs better than the PC version, which is hilarious. Obviously it doesn't look as good visually and you don't get 60fps but at least there's no god awful frame stuttering, flickering shadows or bugs with invisble enemies etc.
@@georgiosgiannoukas3319 thanks for the info bro! I completely agree! I've been researching like crazy I'm so hyped for this game.
Thanks for this... Now I can enjoy this game with my ps4 slim... game is on sale for boxing day
Thank you for doing this.
I'm playing Horizon Forbidden West on my PS4 Slim and it's smooth as butter. This should run just fine!!! Thanks mate.
Me too. It looks great on the slim!
All I have is a base PS4. This was good news to hear.
Got a timestamp for an example? 5:41 nevermind.
@@satevo462 My bad for not including that. Thank you though.
@@soundsearadio4554 it's cools man. I literally saw what you described 1 Minute after I left my comment, so edited it to add the timestamp. Should have made my edit more clear.
But it also happened with the wolves pretty close to him, they were kinda of jerky too.
Thanks for this mate. I have noticed that it looks like some times the frames drop and yes, things off at a distance are definitely jerky. I hope they release some kinda patch to fix these issues. To me it does break the immersion.
Underrated channel thanks for the video, from what ive seen im sold
I've been playing on the pro. I'm about 120 hours in and I've never enjoyed a game more in my life. Few technical hiccups here and there but I don't really care. This game is a total masterpiece.
Thank you ! You are one of the only RUclipsrs to talk about the base PS4! Jesus god ! I’m no pc gamer and the PS5 is a vanished ghost at this point. lol
The lackof reviews for last gen is a shame really
True. Really baffling considering that most gamers are still stuck with old gen hardware. Reviewers act like ps4 is ancient history
I picked it up today and I’ve been playing it for about four hours and I see absolutely no problems for the PS4 version every once in a while the camera acts a little goofy during a battle maybe but graphically it’s fine there’s no stuttering it seems to run pretty smooth so go get it boys and girls!!!
Are you on base ps4?
@@leagueconfederatecrow2916 yup the base ps4. No problems.
Thanks alot bro I was so worry to buy this on ps4
As I found that ds3 has some frame rate drops before but this gaming experience is fine for me at least better than days gone wich is what I'm playing these days
I'm in Yemen so I will have to wait a lot till the game is here
Fantastic video - really appreciate the work you did. Definitely gonna pick this up for PS4 instead of waiting (forever) for a PS5 . . . . .
This is why consoles are great. A nearly 10 year device can still run a very high graphics game. In mobile games, a 2 year old device will struggle or may not run a new mobile game at high graphics settings.
Me and my friend are thinking of getting it and your video helped us decided we will get it
Thank you for being clear in how your experience was with the game
Thanks for uploading so quickly, really helpful video! Atm it looks like a better buy for PS4 than PC in many ways lol
I managed to finish Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 Pro so I can handle this lol
dude, you have no idea how much i needed this! thanks so much! now that i know it works good enough on a base ps4, i'll definitely look into getting it.
Haven't had any trouble myself! Runs great on my ps4.
thank you for this review using the old PS4, I am planning to buy a used old ps4 because it is cheap now just to play elden ring
Hope you're well, not sure if you stream or if you're done gaming, but yeah, just hoping you're doing well
play the PS4 game on a PS5 for the best experience.. better than on a PC..
The game runs better than I expected! Thanks for putting this out, most of the focus has been on the next gen/PC ports.
It looks very playable. I'm gonna get it
Please answer did it run good?
@@aramkqly4555no, some delays when dodging and fps drops during boss fights which makes it much harder to beat them
It runs plenty fine on PS4 the only thing us plebs are missing out on are stunning visuals and load times.
Very honest...
does it sound like a jet engine on base ps4 ?

I just got this masterpiece of a game for my birthday today on my PS4! I can't wait to play it 😁😊
If it has a similar performance of the original Dark Souls on PS3 it's enough to me, loved that game to death
So far it looks impressive, I will definitely play it on my base PS4 as a PS5 is so hard to get right now.
It’s amazing how well this game performs on OG PS4!
Thank you for this! I bought the game now aware what to expect, can't wait to return home and start this journey!
i was surprised as hell how smooth it went with my old ps4 pro, i was nervous about it but it literally seems like it runs exactly how the developer intended, I'd even go as far as saying that this game was built for the ps4 pro
Commenting because it helps you with the algorythm and you've done an excellent job. Thanks!
I have a big problem with elden ring ,like randomly causes my ps4 to shut off for no reason and then it acts like I unplugged it from the wall when I did not.
Thanks for uploading, considering how few people have PS5s this is hard to find!
The most helpful video I’ve ever seen in a while. Very well done sir and I want to thank you kindly for your spot on experiment. I’m glad your old buddy didn’t “take off” :)
I just dont like the frame drops and stuttering. besides that its pretty decent. they definitly need to patch it on all platforms though (which the most likely will)
To anyone who has played on a base PS4, how’s the performance during the larger boss battles?
Have had absolutely no problems at all. Don't even notice the minor things people whine about
Depends on what you’re used to and how sensitive you are to slight stuttering and framerate drops. To me, the game plays like DS3 and Sekiro on base ps4
Same on ds3 and Sekiro, its good.
This review provided everything I needed to know and was glad to find some one covering the older consoles!! Thanks so much definitely earned a sub!!
You're talking about the glowing skulls that give runes? They are in the game bro
Im about 1 minute into this review and I already am considering buying this game!! If you or anyone likes horror/action/good vs evil (and you obviously do if your here), I am a horror writer, and my new series just dropped on Dead Man Talkings Forest of Fear called THE MOUNTAIN, which is unique to say the least 😈😎😇
Really was debating on getting this game on my low-end pc or my base ps4. But this video really solidified what I should go for. Thanks dude!
I'm grateful to play this on PS5 and impressed how beautiful it runs and looks on PS4. Came here out of curiosity. Side note, funny to see so many people scarred from cyberpunk and base PS4 fail. Glad Elden Ring holds up.
