Cantonese is such a refined and elegant language and we must protect it from fading away, I encourage everyone to learn Cantonese besides their own languages.
I love your enthusiasm :-) Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Dr. Cantonese, I am really fascinated by the statement you made regarding Cantonese has a long history, culture, and tradition originated from the Baiyue (One Hundred Yue). I believe Cantonese language is often referred as Yue Language (Yueju). Have you ever learned about Vietnam and its history which also linked to the Baiyue (Bách Việt)? In fact my surname is Le (or Lai in Cantonese). At school, I was taught about history that our ancestor in ancient time come from Bách Việt (Bak Yuyt, Baiyue) from Lĩnh Nam (Linnan region), Quảng Đông (Quandong), Quảng Tây (Quanxin), Quảng Châu (Quanchu) regions. In fact, today in Vietnam there is still an ancient city name Quảng Nam (Quannan). I don't know for sure, I am just here to learn from you. You are knowledgeable about Cantonese and these topics.
Sun Yatsen is actually from Hakka origin, based on interview with Dr. Sun Suifang, his granddaughter. Grown up within Cantonese majority, it became natural for him to speak Cantonese fluently, or most probably his family was from cantonized Hakka background, like Hakka Hongkong people nowadays. It is almost certain for him, it's not beneficial to talk about any sub-ethnic group, as he aimed for the whole nation liberation.
When I was young, it was rare to hear Mandarin speakers in Chinatowns in the UK as the majority of overseas Chinese were Cantonese speakers. As a young adult, I went on holiday to the US and found the same in their Chinatowns too. Cantonese will survive even if the CCP impose Mandarin on HK, but I would prefer that they co-existed.
Cantonese speakers ( all over the world) need to preserve their mother tongue as an ancient mainstream Han Chinese language, a core heritage treasure. ( e.g. In Israel, children learn Hebrew at school. However, at home they speak Yiddish or the languages of the countries where their Jewish immigrant parents were born in.) They should jointly apply for an official UNESCO recognition as one of the world's ancient spoken languages that still exists today.
Mandarin especially Beijing dialect is the official language of the CCP. The southern Chinese especially the Cantonese people has always been known to be very opinionated which could affect the CCP which is why they see the Cantonese as a threat. Also since the 80’s Southern China has been holding the Chinese economy due to Guangzhou(Canton) being the manufacturing capital of China and a historical political capital as well. Northern China always saw southern China as a threat. Even in the past government official saw southern Chinese as clever and quick witted but untrusted worthy and tiny in frame while the northerner are simple and dumb but large and strong and good as soldiers. There is a reason why China is cracking down on the Cantonese culture itself and it started with the language. Cantonese culture itself beside is internationally known and loved. Even the Chinese family values and traditions are still practiced by Cantonese people and many Southern Chinese from all over the world. Northern China care less about families and traditions, because of communism, they are more Russians now a days base on today’s cultures.
Fascinating presentation and quite informative, though I have to admit his body language had me laughing at the same time. I look forward to more of his videos.
By comparison, Mandarin is such a lazy and awful sounding dialect. The reason manderin exist its because overtime people got lazy and started using less and less tones, first came the hakka dialect and then manderin with the least tones. Just like today we have simplified Chinese writing in mainland China. People just getting more lazy!
Based on earliest records of Old Mandarin was created between the Jin Dynasty and the Yuan Dynasty. The Jin Dynasty was also known as the Jurchen Dynasty since the dynasty was founded by Jurchen jin leaders which is of a Tungusic Tribe from the North. The Jurchen Jin took over Northern Chinese territories and adapted Chinese customs. They are not Han Chinese since the Song Dynasty was the Han Chinese. The Manchurian could trace their linage to the Jurchens Jin. This is why Mandarin is also know as the Jin Dialect. Old Mandarin was enforced by Klubia Khan as the official Chinese language for about 100 years. Later Míng and Qing dynasty adapted Mandarin and creating what we know as the Mandarin language we know today with many Han Chinese variance.
Cantonese is a language with many occult messages. In its pronunciation of words secrets and omens are being reviewed ...think the Cantonese swearing slang that matches the communist party and one may shudder in fear ...
golforfishing I am Cantonese and I agree. Although sophisticated and elegant in form. It sounds horrible compare to Madarine. Vietnamese always sound comical to me. I have friends who's parents can speak both Cantonese and Vietnamese however they refuse to teach their kids Vietnamese.
I would disagree, I think cantonese sounds "bad" because of the circumstances that people are listening to it (for example when on the bus) but if you are listening to tvb dramas, it is very pleasant to listen to. Not only that, many people are unused to listening to tonal languages so all the syllables sounds similar and lose the different minutae of sounds
Ash Y. What do you speak? Unfortunately the common ppl don't speak like the new reporters or the actors. On a different matter, do you find Cantonese songs more pleasing to listen to than mandarine songs?
David Tang I speak mandarin, cantonese, and english and i do prefer cantonese songs more. Although, to be fair, I do not listen to more current songs so I cant say much about that.
I had a friend growing up who is Cantonese and she always tried to explain this differentiation to me. I feel you. Thanks!

mandarin is not even the original Chinese language sad most people don't even speak the original Han language anymore

@@BlessAllKC Cantonese also isn't the original Chinese language. And Cantonese has south east Asian influences...
@ƎVOLUTIONATED But Northern Chinese are also Mongolian and Manchurian influence.
I'm actually curious... is there a book somewhere on this? In english hopefully.

the written characters are beautiful, but the sound of cantonese and vietnamese are tied for two of the worst sounding languages in the world.
