    That was a refreshing take. Being a great, infallible superhero is fine. People love that escape to a world where the good guy can win (with minimal difficulty). Tbh I'd rather have a supehero with real problems and real companions any day.

      Ditto to that! It's such a small change but it really helps ground the stories and characters that way. A huge part of Batman's character is his humanity, so every time a creator uses that to explore his limitations instead of having him beat someone bigger and stronger than him feels so much more gripping

    After watching this video it is obvious that Matt Reeves was influenced by this for his movie adaptation of The Batman. It is a very dark, brooding story and shows Bruce Wayne wrestling with his demons and struggling to figure out who he is. Sounds like this comic has a lot of that element in it and I love the art. Really good stuff. Thanks for another great video! Keep the Batman stuff coming. I’m learning a lot!!!

    While Mask of the phantasm and Year one are the my favorite Batman origin stories, I love this story so much. This story also has one of the best version of the Riddler imo.

    I loved the depth of the riddler’s plot in this one. Batman had zero chance winning alone.

    I think I might actually like Zero Year more than Year One. Because Batman isn't really the main character of Year One. Gordon is. But Zero Year is about Bruce Wayne and Batman.

    • @ForEveryKindofGeek
      @ForEveryKindofGeek  4 года назад +11

      That's a good point. Year one's definitely more of an ensemble story, but I totally agree that a focus on Bruce and his more human weaknesses are more fitting for an origins story. I also think Miller, even at his peak, tended to shy away from the complexities of Bruce's character and identity, and those are definitely on full display in Zero Year.

      @@ForEveryKindofGeek A friend told me that he prefers Year One because it brings Batman into the urban legend he's often depicted as. I can where he's coming from, but if Year One is about Batman as an urban legend than Zero Year is about Batman as a man. I think Zero Year shows why Batman doesn't fight his war alone, why he needs allies. Because he is still human and he can't save the day alone.

      Likewise! Snyder and Capullo's time on the book is what got me back into Batman. Every story builds on the last, but Zero Year is special to me because it feels like the first time they're really taking ownership of the character. It feels like a whole new Batman, and I love every panel of it.

    While I prefer Year One, Zero Year is still a beautiful origin story. It shows that our hero’s aren’t gods among men, they aren’t perfect, and they aren’t unbeatable. But even then, heroes still learn from their mistakes and rise above to save the day.

    I grew up with (2000AD) Batman Year One and it's pretty much a perfect story. I got back into comics a few years ago after 30 years away. I read The Court of Owls and Death of the Family which I enjoyed. They were a bit busy and disjointed in places but they were a fun romp. I read this series throughout the last week and I really did enjoy it. It's not as succinct and compact as Year One and has some jarring parts, it's like a really good epic with some fun but superfluous side notes. All the artists involved made the experience jaw dropping, often holding my gaze for qite some time. This was definitely a love letter more than a reinvention which is appreciated. Riddler was the perfect villain for this story. Snyder captured the quintessential elements of this character in the best way I have ever seen him portrayed. I did like the Jason Todd story, how it put the comic book history of this character within the story but am torn that it leaves no question that the Red Hood is the Joker. You voice is very cool and this video (will look at more.) has high production values. Looking forward to future conetent.

      @@ForEveryKindofGeek Not kind. I say it as I see it. I believe positive feedback when deserved, encourages more content so win, win. Funny enough just finished 'End game' today, not impressed. As I said the others stuff in this Snyder series was OK but I found it pretty forgettable. 'Zero Year' is definitely the standout for me in the history of Batman, certainly the work artists involved. It really felt like a collaboration and the writing was mostly good. I don't know if you have read one of my favourite Batman stories, the first 'Batma versus Predator'. Sorprisingly for a cross over or whatever it's called I have so much praise for it. These are the views of a casual reader.

    Zero Year as a trilogy felt a lot like The Dark Knight trilogy. The first was like Barman Begins (mixed with Batman), Dark Year was like Dark Knight with the detective edge (a la Barman The Cartoon), and Savage Year was as bombastic as DKR. But like DKR it quite land the ending.

    I think the first have does a lot of interesting things (albeit relying a little to heavy an earlier Batman lore like the Red Hood Chemical plant stuff), the second half is too fr fetched for my liking. Not just the Doctor Dead stuff, but also how Bruce is basically physically invincible despite being portrayed as a regular human being.

    • @johnthai6188
      @johnthai6188 29 дней назад

      i don't know about "Bruce is basically physically invincible despite being portrayed as a regular human being." in the end of dark city he fails the city and faint in an explosion. also in dark city, he almost dies when a whole bunch of cops shooting at him, dr. death almost killed bruce but only survives with gordon's help, and at the end of savage city alfred revives him. so in this story bruce isn't this invincible being. part of the story is that bruce needs allies, because he can't do his 1 man war on crime alone - since he's human.
