    Despite how they handled Superman throughout the New 52 after this run concluded I still love this run.
    Morrison really brought Superman back to a more earnest portrayal of the character, closer to how he was introduced in the Golden Age. Not only on a surface level (this is a Superman that also leaps tall buildings in a single bound instead of flying), he also really did an amazing job in depicting the more humble side of his background, showing him as an idealistic and sincere country boy with an understandable frustration with authority figures, just like in the Golden Age, Morrison's New 52 Superman really felt like a Champion of The Oppressed

      @ForEveryKindofGeek  2 года назад +6

      No arguments here. It’s really neat reading this having moved past the new 52 as well, kinda seems like Grant’s thesis on the character was ultimately proven right. You can try to change the character of Superman but something about the idea of what he represents always manages to shine through.

    Despite the problems I have with New 52 and the way they portrayed Superman, I really like Superman's T-shirt look. It's very simple but unique. If WB did a Superman reboot film, I would love if they have superman wearing this costume for most of the story until the climax, where he can switch to his iconic costume, representing Clark growth into the man of steel's role.

    Grant Morrison is an Unreal writer. They capture the spirit of Classic Golden and Silver age stories, whilst also keeping their runs and ideas Fresh and New
    It's just a shame that the new 52 Conflicted with Grants storytelling philosophy

      Yeah, unfortunately it seems like their relationship with DC gets rocky almost immediately after they wrapped on 52. Still, it’s a testament to their skill that Morrison can still put out such an ambitious story with what they got.

    The concept of a hero in progress is always so interesting to me. This was an exciting start to new 52 superman even if it didn't last. He felt different and like early superman and the way morrison canonizes supermans early politics is so cool

    • @ForEveryKindofGeek
      @ForEveryKindofGeek  2 года назад +4

      Hero in progress is a really great way of putting it, especially given how Morrison handles their exit on the book. It almost feels like they’re saying Superman will always continue to change with the times but the ideas he represents will always stay true to form. It’s really interesting how they explored this with the authority miniseries later.

    New 52 Clark is one of the best versions. He showed that superman isn't a dumbass weapon who will work for the government and is extremely reactive and is a flawless, smiling cat saviour-he is the angry young man who is the literal champion of the oppressed and no matter what the odds are or how many mistakes he makes or how many opponents stand in his way, he will stand tall and will endure.

      Love that phrasing, and I’d argue that’s why I love this series’ approach so well. Grant does a lot across the run but it seems like the biggest point they make is that Superman doesn’t need to be modernized. Truth and justice are everlasting concepts, so why mess with that?

    I wasn't a fan of new 52 superman by grant Morrison mostly because I found it to be a complete and utter mess and plus it didn't help that both the kents and superman and Lois relationship was erased from existence, which really didn't help matters in the long run at least in my opinion. However that being said though I will give grant Morrison this though taking story this on its own and ignoring the new 52 trainwreck as a whole, as a story on its own its actually not bad looking back at it and in fact does feel like Superman besides the T-shirt and jeans look which I didn't like that design for superman because that feels like more superboy's look then Clark kent superman but that's just my opinion. However that being said though I did like that design sort of made a comeback in rebirth Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy as his little 10 year old self borrowing some elements of that superman with his original costume with Jon Kent wearing a hoodie and wearing jeans similar to that superman was really cute and adorable and made me smile everyday but that's just my opinion. Overall Great video on Superman month and great video on Grant Morrison action comics run during the new 52 as a whole.

    I only read the first issue but the concept was very interesting. Morrison is one of the few writers who understands Superman and what he represents. Sometimes I wish Grant was made editor of the Superman comics. Better yet maje them the editor and chief of DC comics. They understand Superheroes better than the current regime.

    I find it endlessly hilarious that this version of Clark was criticized as being too "extreme" and "aggressive" back in 2012, but looking back he was just too based.
    Granted he was a douche in other books, but here, under Grant's pen, he's just proactive.

  • @wdcain1
    @wdcain1 2 года назад +7

    I think the big problem with this run is the new52. Readers were expecting a new and fresh Superman origin and this wasn't meant to be that. George Perez infamously said he never could get a straight answer if ma and pa Kent were alive or dead for his book. Had it released a few years earlier or later so people would know it was it's own thing like All-Star Superman then it would have been better received.
    Also, I think Rags Morales was the wrong choice for primary artist. His line work strongly invokes realism so with all the more goofier and odd stuff would have worked better with a more retro style, deliberately invoking Curt Swan.

    • @ForEveryKindofGeek

      That story definitely looms large, but I think Morrison thinks bigger than a single story. To them, every Superman story feeds into the larger picture of the character, and I think Action Comics is their attempt to bridge those different parts of Superman together. This is the story of him becoming the hero of All-Star.

      @@ForEveryKindofGeek This version is a diluted Superman, made less super by mixing in "dark and gritty realism" as if that would make Superman better than the awesome character he is. @@iamsemjaza you know this version of Superman, is just going back to the golden age version of the character. that version of superman was more ruff around the edges with the criminals he fought. which in my opinion Golden age superman characterization is better than, the silver age version of the character. Champion of the Oppressed superman is better than, the hopeful idealist icon. also superman was already being like "batman", before batman was ever a thing. All star superman = Silver age superman and Action Comics = Golden age superman. which i think ever since the silver age of comics, we lost what made superman interesting in the first place.
