In the Special Edition version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the V'ger cloud was retconned to only 2 AU's in diameter. 82 AU's was just ludicrous. Not that 2 AU's isn't ridiculous either...
A few issues here. Ex Astris Scientia has done good work calculating or estimating the size of ships: 1) K'Tinga is 229m long (when scaled to the TMP Enterprise miniature at 305m). 2) Norway is 355m long. 3) Cheyenne is 362m long. 4) New Orleans is 340m long. 5) Akira is 440m long (+/- 5m). 6) Excelsior is 467m long. The figure of 511m is an incorrect one from the DS9 Technical Manual. 7) The Ambassador class was designed to be 478.5m long by Rick Sternbach. The design drawings were made for a model 35.75" long, scaled to the 48" Enterprise-D model. I believe the actual miniature was blown up to be ~550m long scaled to the Enterprise-D, but technically it should be a slightly smaller ship. Probert's original concept is designed at 524m long, which is probably where the commonly-accepted figure comes from, but take this one as you will because there is no actual canon size for the Ambassador! 8) D'Kora is 366m long.
Would you ever doing a hybrid ship design challenge? The specific idea that popped into my head was mixing a Borg sphere with DS9. I'd love to see your thoughts on this.
There are some wrong numbers in there: the Jem'Hadar Fighter is 95 m, the Galor is 481 m, the K'T'Inga is 214 m, New Orleans-Class is 345 m, Excelsior-Class is 467 m, Nebula-Class is dependent on the configuartion between 442 and 467 m, Ferengi D'Kora is 366 m, Galaxy-Class is 642,51 m, while you have the correct size for the D'Deridex, you have the wrong model (Kerchan) and your Galor-Class is backwards.
Ever notice how the "Borg Sphere" (Star Trek) and the "Death Star" (Star Wars) look very similar? not entirely the same, but, "A long long time ago, in a galaxy far far away" vs Another quadrant where the Borg have harnessed spatial rifts to travel all to almost all parts of the Galaxy, managed to time travel and fail and crossed other dimensions/ planes of existence (Fluidic Space: Species 8472). if Star Wars and Star Trek ever wanted to write a story of how the Empire or the Republic created nano probes to create an adaptable soldier, because Clones and Drones were failing and they needed something adaptable... then flash forward 300 years and the Cybernetic soldiers turn on their "Masters" (Similar to the Cylon Plot from BSG) it would be a worth while curiosity.
The Borg ship was originally meant to be a sphere as it's the most efficient shape for a spaceship. They figured it was too similar to Star Wars and changed it to a cube.
Constitution - Original USS Enterprise Constitution II - Second version of the original USS Enterprise/Enterprise A Intrepid - USS Voyager Excelsior - Enterprise B/USS Excelsior Ambassador - Enterprise C Sobereign - Enterprise E Galaxy - Enterprise D
In the first episode, it looks like you could dock eight Enterprises easily - one at each pylon. In this comparison, it looks like the station could barely fit one Enterprise between the pylons on one side.
i had the same thought, but i recently watch the episode where the klingons attacked the station. After the battle, a galaxy class was docked and it was pretty damn big compared to ds9. Maybe the first episode was off vs scale.
@Leonard WeisfeldThe only logical explanation is that he never actually went to Sydney, he must've been beamed into a holo deck when he was sleeping, probably section 31 again
In my opinion...cement and certain seeds may help start a new world in the future of outterspace. Robots to stop comets and making sure the machines don't get bugged during a star war. The Egyptian oracles were on point with hieroglyphs and spaceships. Gravity like in the movies is definitely needed more for astronauts.
But it dwarfed a whaling ship below it in Star Trek IV The Voyage Home. Granted nobody was probably in the engineering section(seriously, where are it's warp engines? Internally mounted? Where did they even fit whales in it?) & most the crew in the head part. Star Trek was always inconsistent in it's sizes and technical stuff.
fun fact: The Uss Enterprise from the jjverse is bigger than the galaxy class Enterprise..and the Uss Vengions from into Darkness is almost bigger than a star destoyer...its true..look it up
+Ryan You're asking for a reasonable explanation involving people who didn't care. The JJverse was made to be a blockbuster action special effect show. That's all. The whole point of the timeline change was so they didn't have to care about the rest of it either.
Ryan, the prime universe has nothing to do with the JJ universe. The same rules dont apply. They are totally different shows/movies that only share one thing - the name "star trek". But as you know, fans and smart followers dont consider the JJ crap star trek. Because its not.
I thank you for another great size comparison vid! Love it! I learned something new here... The V'Ger Cloud is *huge*! Given the actual size of the V'Ger ship, I thought the cloud was smaller. Man, V'Ger had to be very powerful to make a cloud of that size. :)
In The Motion Picture, V'ger could generate a power field greater than the Sun itself. So 82 AUs (or just 2 AUs in the 2000 Director's Edition) is possible, I think.
These ships are getting ridiculously large. You'd need a transporter just to get from one end to the other. What possible reason to build such things, except as space arks. BTW...you forgot the asteroid ship Yonada!
I agree. Look at that Romulan ship from TNG - more than a kilometer long! I never understood ships as big as the TNG Enterprise. Realistically, they'd be too expensive to build (certainly for any quantity), because they consume way too much in terms of materials and resources. Just putting an atmosphere inside one of those things would be a challenge. I always found the smaller ships of TOS much more believable.
Thats what the turbolifts are for. There are many diagrams that show the turbolift networks operating in three dimensions. Up/down, left/right, forward/backward.
Sven Kopperud Turbolifts are great, but that Romulan ship is 1353 meters - that's about the height of a 350 story building, and one lllooonngg turbolift ride.
Despite some errors not bad tho despite Andromeda being a second created Gene Roddenberry show it was not apart of Star Trek however no complaints to it's being added to the comparison for ship sizes
A very nice list sir. Good job on making it. A few corrections if you will: the Galor class is presented with the rear first in this video (its front section is the semicircle part); "sovereign" is spelled with a S; the Andromeda Ascendant is not from Star Trek i'm sure; the romulan ship presented as the D'deridex class is actually the Kerchon class (the D'deridex is the classic Warbird); The Dyson Sphere is not technically a ship, it is an artificial planetoid. Some iconic ships that should have made it on the list: Romulan D'deridex (TNG Warbird); Klingon D-7, Vor'cha, Negh'var; Dominion Heavy Cruiser. Thank you for making this :)
I have always had a soft spot for the Klingon Bird of prey. Terrestrial landing and take off from planet surfaces as well as warp drive for deep space travel make this class among the most versatile and long serving. Their small size , cloaking device and small crew (around a dozen) made them ideal for spying ,scouting , patrolling and combat
Actually, that's not a D'deridex class, but a Kerchan class. And you really should have added the Universe and Vesta class, at least to give Starfleet a few more big vessels.
Dude, the Vesta is not canon, either the Universe. lol. And those sihps arent big, in fact they are pretty small compared with any regular sized cruiser.
Cardassian Galor class you show is actaully the Keldon Class, though the Galor ends up being the same model without the extra "backpack" like shape on it. Tholian Orb Weaver, not Waves.
That's NOT a Romulan D'deridex! The head is a different shape, the neck is too long, the wings curve back, the nacelles aren't on the edges of the wings and the wings are wider!
Sovereign is misspelled. The Galor class is facing the wrong way. The ship labeled as the "D'deridex class Warbird" isn't a D'deridex at all. In fact, it isn't even a canon design at all. The Excelsior class is styled like the TOS ships, and it never was. Therefore, it's erroneously labeled and isn't even a canon design either. All that said, this was a pretty good watch. Things are depicted in the correct scale, or as best as we can understand their scale with the information we have.
So basically, the comments summarized: You forgot this, you misspelled that, that ship doesn't belong. Why is the first thing people do to criticize? Jesus, how about some appreciation for the model rendering, time and production that went into making the video? I just imagine these bespectacled little tools at their keyboards analyzing every frame between slurping down Mountain Dew and Hot Pockets, and snorting in the nerdiest way possible when they find an error. More satisfaction in criticism than in appreciation. Sad. I liked this video with a vengeance.
just because Gene Roddenberry created Andromeda doesn't mean you should put the Andromeda ship with the Star Trek family of ships. not trying to put down Andromeda really enjoyed the show but still not apart of the Star Trek Canon
At first, the Andromeda's story was created as part of the Star Trek universe. Later it was decided to separete it, because it did not fit Star Trek's spirit. So, you could count it as Mirror Dark Universe in ST or so.
As I said he did create it but it's still has nothing to do with this Star Trek lore the technology used on the series was completely different than the Star Trek technology. If you actually watch the show and read the books you would know there's no comparison to any of the physics at all either in the show. He may have come up with the idea and the basic story of it but he really had nothing to do with anything else after that. Remember Gene Roddenberry did create Star Trek yes and he did create Andromeda yes but writers and producers made the show made the movies made everything about it they just used his ideas. Andromeda still has nothing to do with Star Trek what so ever get it got it good
Originally, Andromeda was the Enterprise and Kirk had to rebuild the Federation after a Vulcan betrayal. That was the original concept. The Magog were Klingons, for example. That's why the Neitchiens seemed to have an (initially) quote logical viewpoint. That's why the Captain is forced to kill his first officer in the pilot (ie. that was originally Kirk and Spock) Roddenberry moved the concept to a new series in the end, because it didn't sit with his ideal for Star Trek - and obviously the eventual series for Andromeda had no direct connection to Trek. But even in that show, you could see the links to where it came from. Not important to this video, really, but something of historical interest.
Nice, two things of note though, it a Sovereign class not Sobereign, and Andromeda Ascendent is from Roddenberry's other show "Andromeda" not the Trek verse.
@MetaBallStudios. Nicely done. However - not to be negative - I just thought I'd let you know that the graphic used to represent The Excelsior was Incorrect. Also - the Vger Cloud was supposed to be 2AU's - Not 82. Just saying.

Andromeda was one of gene roddenberry's creations. Not strictly trek but is regarded by some as a distant future of the trek universe. (Although that is non canon)
In the Special Edition version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the V'ger cloud was retconned to only 2 AU's in diameter. 82 AU's was just ludicrous. Not that 2 AU's isn't ridiculous either...
Thank you for including Andromeda!
Yeah, that was a super nice touch! Gave me a good laugh.
just had my first nerdgasm watching this! thanks! just curious tho how big is a planet killer? or did I just miss it?
Yeah, it wasn't there. Probably somewhat bigger than the whale probe i think.
The Doomsday Machine was in there, hidden, dwarfed by the Whale Probe.
A few issues here. Ex Astris Scientia has done good work calculating or estimating the size of ships:
1) K'Tinga is 229m long (when scaled to the TMP Enterprise miniature at 305m).
Why is the Galor backwards?
And what about the Dominion "bug" (or attack) ship?
A lot of people do this.. it is because people who aren't major fans make these things without realizing which end is the front.
they parked the Galor backwards because the inspection sticker was out of date and the cops were heavy the day of the video shoot.
+Rob Mcmuffin Or maybe the pilot had too much Kanar and was a bit drunk!?
+Saalk Z. Alar lol...true, very true! point well made.
Thanks for including Andromeda. I've always wanted to see it compared to a federation ship
Sovereign with a 'v', not 'b'. Also, unless the books say otherwise, Andromeda is not Star Trek.
Formally titled Gene Roddenberry's Andrómeda.
People who bitch about typos are boring
Very COOL! Where can I find more data on the more 'obscure' Starships? You have me hooked on these visual comparisons, love them!
This isan amazing comparison, Thanks for the amazing sound effects it really cool. But the pacing is too quick. but by the way this interesting video.
Would you ever doing a hybrid ship design challenge? The specific idea that popped into my head was mixing a Borg sphere with DS9. I'd love to see your thoughts on this.
Ha! Nice inclusion of the Dyson Sphere.
Andromeda Ascendant isn't Star Trek
But its gene roddenbery.
Ever notice how the "Borg Sphere" (Star Trek) and the "Death Star" (Star Wars) look very similar? not entirely the same, but, "A long long time ago, in a galaxy far far away" vs Another quadrant where the Borg have harnessed spatial rifts to travel all to almost all parts of the Galaxy, managed to time travel and fail and crossed other dimensions/ planes of existence (Fluidic Space: Species 8472).
if Star Wars and Star Trek ever wanted to write a story of how the Empire or the Republic created nano probes to create an adaptable soldier, because Clones and Drones were failing and they needed something adaptable... then flash forward 300 years and the Cybernetic soldiers turn on their "Masters" (Similar to the Cylon Plot from BSG) it would be a worth while curiosity.
spheres are geometric. star wars was broke before release. borg don't like good looks.
The Borg ship was originally meant to be a sphere as it's the most efficient shape for a spaceship. They figured it was too similar to Star Wars and changed it to a cube.
LeXx LeCryce
So was Earth Final Conflict, but that doesn't make it Star Trek.
Constitution - Original USS Enterprise
Constitution II - Second version of the original USS Enterprise/Enterprise A
Intrepid - USS Voyager
Excelsior - Enterprise B/USS Excelsior
Ambassador - Enterprise C
Sobereign - Enterprise E
Galaxy - Enterprise D
I'm surprised it didn't have the borg transwarp hub, I've always wondered exactly how big that was
To Metal: I'm liking how you do proper size comparison with real background.
I thought the Doomsday Machine was bigger than that.
I thought it was smaller lol
I didn't even see it in the video!
:(
One of my favourite videos!
Hi
I feel like DS9 should be much bigger compared to the Galaxy Class
It should be since in the first ds9 episode, the station was huge compared to the enterprise D
In the first episode, it looks like you could dock eight Enterprises easily - one at each pylon. In this comparison, it looks like the station could barely fit one Enterprise between the pylons on one side.
it's all a matter of perspective. If you look top down and the Galaxy Class is docked on top, it will look bigger...
i had the same thought, but i recently watch the episode where the klingons attacked the station. After the battle, a galaxy class was docked and it was pretty damn big compared to ds9. Maybe the first episode was off vs scale.
Dennis Vu well, Star Trek was never very famous about continuity after all....
Cool Video! Sovereign and Nebula class look so awesome
I don't remember seeing that the last time I was in Sydney.
Did you look up?
should we contact starfleet
@Leonard WeisfeldThe Borg don't have cloaking technology.
@Leonard WeisfeldThe only logical explanation is that he never actually went to Sydney, he must've been beamed into a holo deck when he was sleeping, probably section 31 again
If the Galor is a Cardassian ship class then I'm pretty sure it's front to back in this. :D
bloody_albatross it’s also not a Galor
Damn impressiv! I love the Akira... I have a game were i always love to use it... Not the best ship but i love its style ;D
You spelled "Sovereign" wrong.
+Reinholds Klinefelter what are you talking about i love the soberign class vessel. /s
+Macca Intrepid for the win
*****
+Sanel Grgic I beleive that you have missspelled Soverreign
ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL
Bird of prey is much smaller. It had a crew of twelve.
But it dwarfed a whaling ship below it in Star Trek IV The Voyage Home. Granted nobody was probably in the engineering section(seriously, where are it's warp engines? Internally mounted? Where did they even fit whales in it?) & most the crew in the head part. Star Trek was always inconsistent in it's sizes and technical stuff.
fun fact: The Uss Enterprise from the jjverse is bigger than the galaxy class Enterprise..and the Uss Vengions from into Darkness is almost bigger than a star destoyer...its true..look it up
Why would the Enterprise be larger in the jjverse? The timeline change would not have effected starship design. It doesn't make sense
JJ stuff counts for nothing in any universe. He's just the hired hand brought in to dazzle and impress idiots with shiny things.
+Ryan You're asking for a reasonable explanation involving people who didn't care. The JJverse was made to be a blockbuster action special effect show. That's all. The whole point of the timeline change was so they didn't have to care about the rest of it either.
MurphMonkey I think the size was corrected in the newest movie to be around the same size as TOS
@@CaptRicoSakara I hope that in the upcoming new version they will restore the original 82 AU figure.
I always found the smaller ships of TOS much more believable.
chodeshadar18 yes you're right in TOS the ships had sizes that were imaginable but they became bigger and bigger until their size was just a joke
Jim O'Donnelly
Thats true. Though with the "turbo" in the name, it wouldnt take as long as you would think. But still, it would seem like a long time.
cool music and very cool ship models!!!
You’ve gotten at least half of the names wrong in this.
I didn't see the *Scimitar* from Star Trek: Nemesis.
All for the better, the less said about Nemesis the better, also the Scimitar was stupid.
They used a Keldon model instead of a Galor
aaaaaand he listed the yager class and used the intrepid as the model. they share the same saucer but different engineering hulls.
K't'Inga class was way too big, but the Ds9 Technical manual book actually started that error.
You sound like you're selling one!
On the off chance you are, how much do you want for it? Credit or Latinum?
Latinum naturally.
Can I get mine with an interior upgrade? I'm thinking more luxury yacht, less prison cell.
Actually, that's not a D'deridex class, but a Kerchan class.
And you really should have added the Universe and Vesta class, at least to give Starfleet a few more big vessels.
It is lacking the big Klingon ships as well. Where are the Vor'Cha and Negh'var?
Dude, the Vesta is not canon, either the Universe. lol. And those sihps arent big, in fact they are pretty small compared with any regular sized cruiser.
By the Universe class, he meant: memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/USS_Enterprise_(NCC-1701-J)
Which is big.
And by big, around Borg Cube size.
ThatRedGuy On Steam
Its 3k long i think. And as tall as the enterprise d just in its saucer section.
I thought that's what was shown as the D'Dridex class Warbird I'm guessing MetalBall just Goggle searched and got that as D'Dridex and did it as is
NICELY SHOWN. ENLIGHTNING.
Was the Andromeda Ascendant EVER shown in Star Trek?
The modelling that are done are nicely rendered.
Zxnmmmy the UK
I don't think the andromeda was ever shown in star trek. The millenium falcon was though. :P
Andromeda Ascendant was from another show that Gene created and exec product by Majel.
Cardassian Galor class you show is actaully the Keldon Class, though the Galor ends up being the same model without the extra "backpack" like shape on it.
Tholian Orb Weaver, not Waves.
That's NOT a Romulan D'deridex!
The head is a different shape, the neck is too long, the wings curve back, the nacelles aren't on the edges of the wings and the wings are wider!
right, its a kerchan class
The size comparison between the Borg Unicomplex, the Whale Probe, the V'Ger spaceship, and Florida was interesting.
What is that strange variant of Voyager with wings in the beginning?
Yeager Class. Showed up in the background of DS9 episodes
The Klingon Bird of Prey has taken on so many sizes throughout the franchise...
Halo: we have the biggest-
Star Trek: hold my synthehol.
Damn I learned something new! The dyson sphere is a starship also!
Well the T'Kon empire could move stars so...
the doomsday machine in this video looks like a fat coned joint lol
Captain’s log reporting the of all of the star trek ships thanks metaballstudio
Who is class dreadnought ship Star Trek Into Darkness ?
Vengeance?
The avenger class looks pretty cool. 0:52
But i have no idea from this design cam from. Was it in any movie or episode? Or is it a non canon ship?
A cloud isn't a spaceship
neither is the enterprise cos they're starships not spaceships
unless your in star trek, otherwise why is Silver Blood in the franchise?
@@mitchjones7403 yes they are, all starships are spaceships, but not all spaceships are starships.
@Talamon San Incorrect.
@@mitchjones7403 Cloud can be starship NOOB
Galor is backwards. Can we have an updated version of this? Love your newer scale videos!
Jemhadar Fighter too
no universe class?
Lmao, as if this dude did the rendering himself. He stole this shit then did a piss poor job on the descriptions and names
I had noticed that "Sovereign" was spelled with a "B" instead of a "V", but chalked it up to a minor typo. 🙂
so basically you criticizing on people who criticize lol you hypocrite lmfao 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Maybe a nod to the modellers would go someway to allevaiating criticism. Any idiot can take pictures of models in 3D software >.
@SpacialKatana Dude these are his models lol some people are dumbasses lol 😂😂😂😂😂
What an awesome video! My ONLY complaint is it goes by too fast! Could you also do a slow-mo version? LOL! There's some really nice looking ships.
just because Gene Roddenberry created Andromeda doesn't mean you should put the Andromeda ship with the Star Trek family of ships. not trying to put down Andromeda really enjoyed the show but still not apart of the Star Trek Canon
That's why the Captain is forced to kill his first officer in the pilot (ie. that was originally Kirk and Spock)
Roddenberry moved the concept to a new series in the end, because it didn't sit with his ideal for Star Trek - and obviously the eventual series for Andromeda had no direct connection to Trek. But even in that show, you could see the links to where it came from.
Not important to this video, really, but something of historical interest.
I love it
this needs an update
Discovery & Picard Series
and the movies
would like to see them here
Nice, two things of note though, it a Sovereign class not Sobereign, and Andromeda Ascendent is from Roddenberry's other show "Andromeda" not the Trek verse.
@MetaBallStudios. Nicely done. However - not to be negative - I just thought I'd let you know that the graphic used to represent The Excelsior was Incorrect. Also - the Vger Cloud was supposed to be 2AU's - Not 82. Just saying.
Andromeda Star Trek?
It's concerning that any star trek related video I watch has you in the comments. How many more times will I see you tonight? I guess I'll find out.
