At the time this was released he wasn't. This was before Jurassic World and, well, Guardians of the Galaxy hit. This trailer even dropped before the Lego movie. No one but Parks and Rec fans knew who he was, and there weren't that many Parks and Rec fans.
To think this was supposed to be a massive flop, when it actually became one of the biggest movies of 2014(:

This was a big point in the MCU, proving they could spin gold out of any character and not be bound to the big names like Iron Man/Cap/Thor
Which is also kinda funny, considering that Iron Man wasn't as well known outside of the comics to the general public compared to other Marvel characters.
Choosing him to start off a cinematic universe was honestly a ballsy move that payed ofd in the best way imaginable. Now Iron man is a household name to everyone

I'll admit it. I was one of those people as well, but mostly because i had never heard of them. I went to the theater just to see it on a whim, and when i saw Star Lord dancing through the ruins to "Come and Get Your Love", i got this grin on my face thinking, "This is going to be good".

James Gunn had it already planned for Rocket 10 years before GOTG 3, absolutely amazing

@@orangejuice4266 I mean, Lylla was already a character from Rocket's backstory in the comics. So odds are that's why the name was there, not because Gunn knew where he was gonna take the trilogy from the start.

Actually more of a plot hole if anything as it’s just a Easter egg to reference the comics probably not thinking that she would be in a future installment and kinda a plot hole since how would nova corps know about Lylla and even if they did why would they include that and even know her name?

I'm here rewatching this after seeing the new Guardians 3 trailer. Words cannot describe the emotions I'm feeling right now. I honestly can't believe we've reached the end of an era with this team. Guardians 3 is gonna absolutely _break me,_ I just know it.

Coming back here after watching The Guardians Vol 3. to see how it all started. The best trilogy of the MCU.

The difference with GOTG is that they actually gave a purpose to the songs, they fitted into the story and made the scenes so much better. When watching SS they just threw the frontpage of iTunes in my face
When I first watched this movie, I was COMPLETELY blown away by how fun it was! The directing, the writing, the acting, the humour, the action, the visuals, the soundtrack; just EVERYTHING! Overall, I consider this flick to be the best blockbuster of 2014, and one of the best instalments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I cannot WAIT for the sequel.

It gives me chills every time I watch it. Editing is so good.
This brings back so many memories to me. The same year this trailer dropped my dad was going through epilepsy and was hospitalized. The next day I watched the trailer; the day it premiered and thought to myself "This is a marvel movie? What the hell are they doing?" Fast forward a few months later, I visited a high school friend in the hospital who was diagnosed with leukemia. After my visit, I went to the nearest movie theater to watch The Guardians and man what a time I had inside the cinema. All the laughs, the cheers, and screaming from the audience made my experience the best thing a teenager could get at the movies. Just when I thought 2014 was going to be my disaster year this movie gave me a reason to smile and to not lose hope.Thank you, Marvel

I respectfully disagree. In The Avengers, while evberyone was pretty awesome in their own right, Iron Man stole the show unintentionally becuase it was the character the vast majority of the audience had the most investment on due to his previous movies and the way in which his character was written made him immensely well liked with audiences. Justice League on the other hand would have Batman steal the show INTENTINALLY becuase DC and WB can't market anything that's not Batman to save their lives, which is sad to me, since, despite being awesome, Batman is far from the only great character DC has. I'd personally like to see more of The Flash, but sadly, DC only trusts Batman to bring in the money. we just gotta hope they someday realize this and cool it with the Batman overhype.

Imagine a movie of this caliber only receives 7 million views and ends up being one of the best MCU movies while Endgames trailer receives 117 million.

Every now and then I like to come back to this trailer to be reminded that this was the most batshit crazy thing Marvel has done, and yet they absolutely nailed it. This was really the tipping point where you realized that no matter how absurd a concept is on paper you can pull it off with good writing and directing.

After seeing Vol. 3, I love how Rocket is standing in the middle and not Quill. It’s almost as if this is his story and he’s the captain…

When trailers didn't show the entire plot. Love it.
I completely understand that Guardians of the Galaxy was just a movie. And I fully enjoyed it. It was much better than I or most sci-fi fans most likely anticipated. However, despite this movie technically being an action adventure comedy blockbuster, my heart was nearly ripped out in the beginning of the movie from watching the young Peter Quill witnessing his mother's final moments alive. That scene almost caught me off guard and was extremely a bit more emotional than anticipated. I don't think I have had a sci-fi movie hit me emotionally that hard since watching Luke Skywalker's last moments with his father Darth Vader when he lay dying in his son's arms. At the end of the movie, I enjoyed the solid friendship the team finally established with each other. That scene reminds me of some of my closest buddies I grew up with during my teen years. I thank Marvel Studios for producing such a nice movie that I am very fond of. There are a very few select movies I never get bored of watching. And Guardians of the Galaxy is definitely one of my select movies I will always enjoy watching over and over. And last but not least, I loved how Yondu Udonta just smiled at the end of the movie on how he got played again by Peter Quill. I think the moral of that story is that deep down, Yondu knew that it was too dangerous for him to hold onto that Infinity Stone while in his sole possession.

The part towards the end with the infinity where Quill saw his mother was another emotional pull as well i thought, both showed more heart and people understood that. Marvel may be popping at least a movie a year, sometimes 2 but they're doing quite well with each.

DC tried to do what Marvel did, by taking a team that wasn’t well know, and making them extremely popular. Problem is, while Marvel waited, fleshing out the popular characters (The Avengers) and waiting for Phase 2 to take risks, DC went straight into it, making Suicide Squad the third movie of their DCEU. They tried to do things too fast, making a Batman V. Superman movie with Wonder Woman before Batman and Diana had movies (Batfleck still hasn’t gotten one), and making a Justice League film before making films of Aquaman and Flash.

@Dante King yea but dude if you give a movie 4 hours of run time then at that point if its still bad the director shouldnt ever direct a movie again, what im trying to say is when a movie is double the length of the original of course its gonna be more fleshed out and much better so no its not that quote dark universe works well with dc its just that zack snyder actually decided to use his brain for this movie and had 4 hours to introduce characters and tell the story so at that point the movie kinda has to be good, sorry for doing this for so long but DC isnt as "dark and gritty" as people say it is its just desaturated colours that arent nice to look at all a much better trilogy of DC movies that are dark and gritty is the nolan trilogy which as well as being an amazing bunch of movies just looks so much better to the eye that is the visual shi*show that is the dceu, obviously visuals arent everything but still i think you get my point

Guys, after Gotg 3, I just noticed Lylla in the Rocket's relatives😢. Marvel as always shows true attentions to details in their movies🤩🤩

I accidentally saw this movie, scrolling through on a bored Sunday. And I was immediately hooked.
I am no Marvel guy but I've seen GOTG 1,2, and 3 and it is a real treat.
I only wish they made one every couple of years. We all need Drax, Groot, Starlord and a little Gamora each day.

God. I remember I went to the cinema with my friend 8 years ago to watch this movie just to laugh at the characters and make fun of them. I would never expect it was one of the best Marvel movies I ever seen and when I got out of the cinema with pure joy I was astonished with the soundtrack, the characters, everything... Guardians of the Galaxy became my favourite marvel franchise.

I wish they could bring the Fantastic 4, the X men, and the Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man, and the Avengers all together in one movie and make it 3 hours. I think it would be either a mess, or the greatest movie of all time.
That's approximately 23 characters minus the villains and any other minor characters in a 3hour film. They would all be a waste, since all of them would barely have any time in the spotlight.
I know that people want more the more they get, but... think. A movie has to be thought out, have a structure. Not just a mash-up of characters like a fighting game.
Its just a fantasy.......It is simply.... just a fantasy. :)

In all seriousness though, I gotta ask why Hooked on a feeling of all things setting the tone sold you on this, unless you're a fan of bad movies? That (and Chris Pratt being very notfunny) drained all my hype.All of it.
Quiltfish all i knew about guardians was that it was an action comic book series that involved a talking raccoon. i suppose i thought it would take itself seriously, especially after the tone that the few teasers took. this trailer, however, is obviously for an action comedy and i liked what i saw.
does it appeal to the lowest common denominator? yes.
