There actually is a dipstick to check oil level on the right side of the engine below the clutch case... so make sure you haven't put too much oil in it because you may blow the oil pan gasket or worse-the headgasket!
There's an oil dipstick below the fill cap, slightly towards the rear brake foot lever. It looks like an idle adjustment knob. Using that dipstick is the proper and only way to check your oil level.
When I changed the oil on my 17 only removed the left lower cover and loosened the left side cover towards the back. Also the bike has a dipstick to check the oil level.
Dang, thanks man! I'll try out just removing that lower cowling next time. Also, can't believe I couldn't find that dipstick before haha. Found it checked, oil level is perfect :)
Hi! Can't believe you got a new R6! I love this bike since the first models! I've been giving my blood to my work in the last 4 years, that's why I actually didn't follow my inscriptions on YT, and I didn't even know you had changed channels...Thanks to ++AB I got the track back to Motonosity! HAHUAHUAH! By the way, in 2013 my life took a change and I had to move to a bigger city to work, then I got limited time to spent on internet...but in 2015 I finnaly got a Yamaha XJ6N! I'd made a couple videos on my own channel! It's nice to be back! Have good roads!
Maintenance vids are the next best thing to build series. Gotta build'em, ride'em, then maintenance'em. Please tell me that you're going to make a video installing a Dynojet power commander soon?
Nice video thanks! Some practical Help for viewers: 1.you really only need to remove the very bottom left side body panel, and loosen the main left side panel. I saw he removed the entire left panel and upper small panel. That might be slightly helpful, but that’s really over kill. 2. the oil filter can be removed with a standard Toyota 14 four oil filter wrench if you have one handy which I did.
Catching up on my subscriber videos and you make this oil change look so simple. I would have been freaking out just with taking off the plastic (I have broke several in the past). Thanks for sharing! Tell Abby Happy Mother's Day!
for your new oil filter, you do not need to add new oil on the o-ring/ seal.. It comes greased from the factory. Thats half the reason why they add that plastic cover to it.
Just got myself a '20 R6, coming from a '09 600RR ABS. The Honda was designed that you could 'cheat' and change the oil/filter without pulling plastics. Looks like there's no way to do that here. Nice video, great job!
Dude thank you so much for your detailed videos! Everyone I buy a new bike/ car I always RUclips how to videos to help me do my own work and I try to choose the best videos, and for my 2019 R6 it was all your awesome videos! Your such a cool dude, you have a beautiful family, and your down to earth. ALL of your videos are helpful! Especially the oil change, servo eliminator, and air mods video! Because of you I’m sending my ECU to Bauce Racing, who btw, are very professional and great to deal with! Keep you the solid work bro.👊
I have a tip, intead of punching a hole in the old oil filter with a screw driver, you can take it off by wraping it around with tape and then pulling down.
I went from an 08 R6 to Honda 15' and felt the heat more on the R6. I wrecked the CBR and bought a 17 R6 and forgot how much heat I got on my legs. So yes it feels the same as the old one.
I know my r6 2014 I have no issue at all about cold start. and the way it is. I wish you were closer here. I'm in california and I thought you were in cali at first until I started following your blogs/videos, you're in Texas... But either way I will be watching you all the time for all the blogs/videos that you make for either of your bike but more in to your r6 because that is all I have to compare for now as what I have. thank you so much. love the quick shifter. I also have that for my r6 2014 but generic quck shifter gp style love it. I hady ecu flash by vcyclenut. keep up the good work.
I own a ktm rc 200 whis also has similar riding position as your bike. I have neck pains when i ride this for longer distances. do you face the same issue?
i hope to get more info from your new bike before i get mine because people out in youtube are complaining about the new bike with cold start and stuff like that.
+X Tian I've heard that as well and it does take a few extra seconds to start up that I would expect. But it DOES start. So unless any problems arise, it's really not an issue. I'll update on anything that I find noteworthy!
Man don't understand why Yamaha makes it so hard to get to the oil filter. That's why I like my zx10r it's right there at the bottom and very easy to get too. But u made it look easy so can't be to bad good video very informative!
Great video thanks! I tried to use the link that's list below to buy the rear stand but the link is actually for a pressure washer..I'd thought I'd let you know, thanks for the video again!
You could have used I think either 6mm or 8mm bolts in the holes where the spools go and it will temporarily prop the bike on a pit bull stand. Until you get spools anyways... Loving the R6 videos
Old video so this comment might not get seen but for anyone reading DO NOT do the screw driver method to get the filter off. 90% of people and shops don’t use torque specs and the filter will almost always be way too tight to do this and you will mutilate your filter and make things 100 times more difficult for yourself. I’ve rarely ever heard of this actually working for people. Not worth the risk.
I bought a r6 2017 and the guy at the dealership told me that the first time I change the oil I have to use 10w-40w oil and after the first time use 15w-50w always..... That's OK? What u think?
Thanks for posting! Yeah the cold start thing is an issue but not a big enough one for me to return it (this continues to happen after i changed my oil, dont know if me using 15w50 would make a difference)
No clear window check or dip stick to check oil level>you have to go by a light on the dash.Motonosity.You make everything look easy and simple. Will you take your R6 in for service or is the oil/oil filter change enough????
would you recommend that I take mine in for the first service? I wanted to do it myself and save $. but if it's not required to take it in I'll do it myself
saludos amigo Motonosity ,que tipo de aceite debe usar los R6 2008/2017' aqui la temperatura es de 28/32 grados centigrados. gracias y saludos desde VENEZUELA.
I have a 2000 R6 I bought from someone now when I turn the key on and push the button or just clicks it will run when I push start it so I lookes undertne seat and tbere is a wire that is running from the negative side of the battery to the fuse box
love you blogs. big fan of your blogs and I'm myself is yamaha r6 fan. and I'm actually looking forward to trade my r6 2014 to the new r6. just for the look that i like about the new bike and the electronics that came with the new one now.
man, i loved my Ninja 300 but it takes, what seems like a lot, just to do an oil change on these sportbikes. I got used to it though. Love how much easier it is on my Vulcan S.
Like your videos they are pretty good. Watched yours before I did the oil change on my 17.. only thing to note the K&N filters leak now due to them being made in china.. just a heads up. FYI
+Jordan Kuhar Yeah it does have a pretty poor cold start. Then again, after changing the oil, it starts super quick. I'll report back on if that continues.
Motonosity please do! When i get mine to near 500 all do the oil change hopefully that helps! I dont want to take the bike back i love everything else about it!!
Does anyone reuse their oil filter between oil changeS? For everyone possibly opining why wouldn’t anyone want to change the filter; I always do. This is just a simple question. I’m wondering because my oil is perfectly clean after 3.5k miles on a 19k mile bike. I live in Seattle suburbs so I ride half the year only. -Obviously, the oil filter has done its job as designed and that’s mainly the reason my oil stays super clean. Just asking what would happen if not replaced or if anyone reuses theirs for another round?
So I'm at about 400 miles on my new r6/hardbreak in, I'm about to order the filter you got but they say it's not recommended for the bike. Did you ever have any problems with it?
I'm gonna go out on a limb here before watching this vid and say Draining the oil on a R6 is like Draining the oil on any other vehicle, Step one put drain pan under vehicle, Step two drain oil, Step three remove old Filter, Step four install new Filter and drain plug then fill with fresh oil. Did I get it Right?
most people are more concerned with how to take Yamaha's notoriously complex fairings off to get to the filter and drain plug. but there are also newer riders needing to learn how to do their own oil
+spliffsperlunk it's not complicated now, but if you've never done it before, it's helpful to have a guide! Also, Yamaha likes hiding things behind plastics haha
Hey man. Thanks for the video. I just bought mu 2017 r6 2 days ago and already put 400 miles on it. The dealership recommends at 600 miles to take it for the first maintenance. But its $650. Can u tell me whats all the do? Is it just oil change or the do more things to it? Your help will be much appreciated. Thanks for all the cool vid
Would anyone be kind enough to tell me how your suppose to removed the quick fastener screw? I’ve been trying to unscrew it for the last 15min and it won’t come off. I tried pulling it off but nothing.
Next time you should replace the crush washer on the drain bolt, the are meant to be used only once. It's a soft metal and will deform to make a tight seal.
Nice. Should mention that you need a torque wrench specifically for tightening the drain plug. Should be about 25 Nm. Demonstrating use of the torque wrench instead of glossing over it would improve your tutorial. You don't want to overtighten that plug, nor do you want it too loose. What's your thought of using car oil in a motorcycle? I've ridden my motorcycle (MZ Baghira, has 660 Yamaha Raptor motor) for almost 50k, doing nothing but car oil changes. 10W30 or 10W40. It's way cheaper than the Racing 4T stuff and over 50k, I have saved a lot of money going the cheaper route. My bike is a 660cc single, not a supersport, though.
There actually is a dipstick to check oil level on the right side of the engine below the clutch case... so make sure you haven't put too much oil in it because you may blow the oil pan gasket or worse-the headgasket!
because of you motornosity i went out and upgraded from a 2001 r6 to a 2017 matt black r6 what a dream bike already doing mods like yours.
I'm very impressed that you took time to answer so many comments! Keep up the great work Brent!
+Dave Hurst Doing my best :)
There's an oil dipstick below the fill cap, slightly towards the rear brake foot lever. It looks like an idle adjustment knob. Using that dipstick is the proper and only way to check your oil level.
perfecto
When I changed the oil on my 17 only removed the left lower cover and loosened the left side cover towards the back. Also the bike has a dipstick to check the oil level.
I was wondering how you would check the oil.
Dang, thanks man! I'll try out just removing that lower cowling next time. Also, can't believe I couldn't find that dipstick before haha. Found it checked, oil level is perfect :)
Motonosity the light just turns on when the oil pressure is to low. So you could damage your engine with to less oil.
Hi! Can't believe you got a new R6! I love this bike since the first models! Motonosity is one of the few people who can make a good, fully informative video on this stuff. Great work my friend!!
Had my bike for a while now but still love these motonosity DIY gems. 💪🏾
Just bought 2017 r6 today. Can't wait till Monday so i can ride it. Waiting on the god damn Insurance...
Oh man i will. The ride home was the best 10 minutes of my life.
I was going to go today but i couldnt get a hold of insurance.... Gotta wait till monday
+Stride Tide congrats dude!

channel locks are good as well. ive used them in the past to remove oil filters.

I like how you show things like this and people can ask as well :)
I have a tip, intead of punching a hole in the old oil filter with a screw driver, you can take it off by wraping it around with tape and then pulling down.
Does the new R6 throw heat much on your legs like the old one ?
+beni8978 Not really! But then again I'm used to the fireball that is the R1 lol
beni8978 yah I've noticed that also my left leg is always on fire lol
I went from an 08 R6 to Honda 15' and felt the heat more on the R6. I wrecked the CBR and bought a 17 R6 and forgot how much heat I got on my legs. So yes it feels the same as the old one.
Yes it is intense on the ankles
yes it does lol

Thanks for vid. How do you get the quick fastener screw out at 2:30 ?
I’m trying to figure out the same thing right now? I’ve been trying to take it out for the last 15 min. Did anyone find out?
This is the only thing I've found that works:ruclips.net/video/eZKcKJ50Xdw/видео.html
Such a beautiful bike
Love your videos bro! All the way from South Africa!
This video was such a huge help! Changed my oil and filter successfully!
i hope to get more info from your new bike before i get mine because people out in youtube are complaining about the new bike with cold start and stuff like that.

After watching this video it makes me really appreciate my sv650s. No plastics to remove and takes me 5 minutes to do an oil change.
Man don't understand why Yamaha makes it so hard to get to the oil filter. That's why I like my zx10r it's right there at the bottom and very easy to get too. But u made it look easy so can't be to bad good video very informative!

Why do you put mobil instead of other brands?
You could have used I think either 6mm or 8mm bolts in the holes where the spools go and it will temporarily prop the bike on a pit bull stand. Until you get spools anyways... Loving the R6 videos
Great video! What tools are used? Embraco key I see, but not the other
Old video so this comment might not get seen but for anyone reading DO NOT do the screw driver method to get the filter off. 90% of people and shops don’t use torque specs and the filter will almost always be way too tight to do this and you will mutilate your filter and make things 100 times more difficult for yourself. so you just tightening the bolt after draining the oil without using any coating on the bolt ?
i thought its gonna leak
+rizt27 I've never used anything on my drain bolts. Never had a leak.
I bought a r6 2017 and the guy at the dealership told me that the first time I change the oil I have to use 10w-40w oil and after the first time use 15w-50w always..... That's OK? What u think?
Thanks for posting! Yeah the cold start thing is an issue but not a big enough one for me to return it (this continues to happen after i changed my oil, dont know if me using 15w50 would make a difference)
you can also use channel lock pliers to remove the oil filter...
Do those universal filter wrenches not fit on motorcycle filters? They sell them at Autozone for like $9
If there is enough room you can wrap your hand around the filter with sandpaper in your hand and twist
No clear window check or dip stick to check oil level>you have to go by a light on the dash.Motonosity.You make everything look easy and simple. Will you take your R6 in for service or is the oil/oil filter change enough????
I cannot get the quick screw faster out it seems as to be stripped. Any suggestions?
Can you make a video of 2019 R6 chain tensioning please? Also a guide to washing bike an safely cleaning radiator? Thank you!
I can't wait to see what you're going to do to this bike. it's gonna look sick
I really need this bike. But I'm sure there are some who need it more than I do. Someone is going to be very happy.
Hey, I followed every step on this video, but my engine light turned on once i was finished. Any suggestions?
Just curious are the torque levels for re-tightening the drain bolt and filter in the owners manual? If not how do I find out what they are?
My quick fastener screw just spins and spins (center only as it should), but never loosens so the tabs can fit in. I am going crazy, thoughts??
Wait, do you have to have a valve adjustment done?
I've got a "KN 204-1" oil filter, will that still properly fit?
would you recommend that I take mine in for the first service? I wanted to do it myself and save $. but if it's not required to take it in I'll do it myself
how do i check oil level without removing fairings /palstics ???
Hi dude , may I ask 2017 R6 has two Oil filter?
saludos amigo Motonosity ,que tipo de aceite debe usar los R6 2008/2017' aqui la temperatura es de 28/32 grados centigrados. gracias y saludos desde VENEZUELA.

Does the bike not have an oil dipstick ?
Xnosity are you gonna do a fender eliminator kit on the R6?
+Luke Eckersley yep!
Motonosity awesome 👍👍
just a quick question. Do I have to change filter every time I change my oil or not. If yes what mileages. Let's say for an s1krr. Thanks
Can u use the stand on the front of r6
love you blogs. big fan of your blogs and I'm myself is yamaha r6 fan. and I'm actually looking forward to trade my r6 2014 to the new r6. just for the look that i like about the new bike and the electronics that came with the new one now.
+X Tian thanks a lot man!
Great tutorial. Well done.
+D. F. Preciate it!
Motonocity does the bike shift a lot better once you change the oil
get you a magnetic oil drain plug broski, very cheap and very helpful!
man, i loved my Ninja 300 but it takes, what seems like a lot, just to do an oil change on these sportbikes. I got used to it though. Love how much easier it is on my Vulcan S.
I don't have a bike and I won't have one for at least the next 3 years but I am still watching this.
Congrats!
bro i can help u get one, i can teach u to ride on my ninja tooo
Well it’s been 3 years, did you get one yet? Lol
Like your videos they are pretty good. Watched yours before I did the oil change on my 17.. only thing to note the K&N filters leak now due to them being made in china.. just a heads up. FYI
Hey i have same brand new r6 yours sounds like it struggles to cold start just like mine! Alot of others vids saying same thing. Is this normal??
Really... ok i hope so... mine only has 190 on it.
Jordan Kuhar i just apply throttle when turning it on and it's much better. I heard it's confirmed that cold start issues stop afer 300-500kms
My 17 R6 hates cold starts. I have 700 miles on mine and it still sucks starting it in the morning.
Does anyone's 2017 R6 shudder when shifting into 2nd or 1st from neutral? Doesn't lurch forward but I hear and feel a hard clunk
Do you know which exhaust you are going to go with yet?
+Jason yep ;)
:D
What’s your recommendation for changing your oil after first oil change?
Does anyone reuse their oil filter between oil changeS? For everyone possibly opining why wouldn’t anyone want to change the filter; I always do. This is just a simple question.
I’m wondering because my oil is perfectly clean after 3.5k miles on a 19k mile bike. I live in Seattle suburbs so I ride half the year only.
-Obviously, the oil filter has done its job as designed and that’s mainly the reason my oil stays super clean.
Just asking what would happen if not replaced or if anyone reuses theirs for another round?
you should get a bike lift like chase, you will make good USSR of it!
Are there 3 litters oil for R6 2018???
What torque wrench do you use for your whole bike? 1/2, 3/8 or 1/4?
good job motonosity, i'll try to do these with my r6
This was actually pretty interesting. All of my oil filters have always been internal.
So I'm at about 400 miles on my new r6/hardbreak in, I'm about to order the filter you got but they say it's not recommended for the bike. Did you ever have any problems with it?
Nope no problems at all.
Are you concerned about warranty issues with not using Yamaha products? Just asking.
Bro do you recommend ktm 390 with minimalistic mods or new Yamaha r6
Brent, what exhaust are you going to upgrade to?
What exhaust are you getting
Really gud stuff bro no click bait just on point
When is the next Jeep vid! That hood looks sick!
I'm gonna go out on a limb here before watching this vid and say Draining the oil on a R6 is like Draining the oil on any other vehicle, Step one put drain pan under vehicle, Step two drain oil, Step three remove old Filter, Step four install new Filter and drain plug then fill with fresh oil. most people are more concerned with how to take Yamaha's notoriously complex fairings off to get to the filter and drain plug. but there are also newer riders needing to learn how to do their own oil
Addendum: Step 1A Remove lower fairing. There fixed.
+spliffsperlunk it's not complicated now, but if you've never done it before, it's helpful to have a guide! Also, Yamaha likes hiding things behind plastics haha
I hear you, I'm just being silly .
Good guy Motonosity. Doesn't get bent out of shape over anything.
Do I tutorial on OIL CHANGE on the CRF please
You should use Yamalube. Shits amazing.
Yo, motonosity I know you probably wont see this but what kind of gas did you put in your r6?
Are you trying to sell the dirt bike tires?
Would anyone be kind enough to tell me how your suppose to removed the quick fastener screw? I’ve been trying to unscrew it for the last 15min and it won’t come off. I tried pulling it off but nothing.
I had the same issue but for anyone else wondering this is the only thing I've found that works for this: ruclips.net/video/eZKcKJ50Xdw/видео.html
Nice . Where and what GoPro stand is that ?
Chanel locks work for taking off oil filters. Better than hammering a screwdriver, have it slip and scratch your bike.
I like your bike man, nice garage bro. What is the difference between your R1 and the R6? Is it a toce exhaust on your R1?
I really like the look 20th out the cowling
those were great camera angles
+Parker White thank you!
since this is the same engine as the 07- on... wouldn't it be the same for all those years too?
+BangSwitch more or less, yes, except for plastics removals
Motonosity cool thanks
Next time you should replace the crush washer on the drain bolt, the are meant to be used only once. It's a soft metal and will deform to make a tight seal.
