I heat the jigs in my toaster oven, use a locking forceps to grab the jigs from the oven rack, quick dip and then hang right back on the rack again. Very easy to control temperature that way and can dip as fast as you can grab them, hang right back on the rack and close to bake. Light jigs will cool quickly so you may need to close oven to reheat them after doing 10 or 15. This way you can hang and heat them all, leave and do something else and come back to dip whenever you feel like it.
Derek The I was wondering why you couldn’t do it the way you stated. It just makes better sense to me.
Great video. I tie simple marabou trout jigs for spin-fishing clients and always used a lighter to heat them. This works waaaaaaaay better (and it's faster, too).
Your fluid bed is very ingenious, sorry but I have to steal this idea lol. Great system it looks like it works good.
I do it two different ways. I will swish the bottom of the jig in one container of powder paint, then flip it over and swish the top of it in another color. That can be cumbersome depending on the size of your container. So I also will do it another way where I dip the whole jig in one color. Then I take a 1/2 inch paint brush, dip it in the second powder and then hold it over the jig and tap the handle to sprinkle a second color onto the top while the jig is still hot. Gives it a splatter color
Thanks for great descriptive rundown on the important parts. I'd love to try this. New subscriber from Canada 👍
You can also use a salt shaker for the glitter powder ;)
Also I poke out the eyelets with a fishing hook I cut the tip off of after I remove them from baking, but while they are still hot. The trick is to poke the paint out of the eye before it cools and hardens. If you do get a jig that the paint hardens on, you can heat a paperclip or hook in a torch and melt the eyelet open. With larger hooks, and controlling the temp by heating the jigs in the oven instead of with a heat gun, often the powder will coat the eyelet, but not plug it and it wont be necessary to poke it open.
great ,got a q....is that a home made fluid bed cup ? would like to see how to do that...also baking them jigs what temp and how long...thank you great video
That's a TJ's fluid bed. They are online I think. I usually heat my jigs around 250-300 degrees for 20-30 minutes.
Great way to save some dough. Thanks for sharing!
as always...very very informative. Thanks.
Use a candle stick or tea light candle for a simple and cheap heat source.
I use needle nose pliers to handle the jig while heating then dipping.
Is that the 2” or 3” fluid bed cups?
great video, very informative thanks!
what materials did use you to make the fluid bed? i would want to make several top containers to quickly change the paint colors. What type of material did you use for the air filter system under the top container and how did you make it stay put? The air source i can get at the hardware store as well as the tubing and air control valve. tks/
Hello there. Thanks for the info. What container did you use to put you T Val was for the aerator for you powder coat?
I do it that way but sometimes I drop the jig in the paint which results in swear words lol! Maybe small vise grips would work good.
How do you keep the weedguards from getting melted/painted?
EXCELLENT EXPLANATION
ugotit33x Thank you for watching!
Do you put them in a toaster oven to harden after?
Very helpful video.
BASSIN_805 Thanks! Glad it helped!
pics of the bottom how you got it air attached to cup. is it a air stone?
I ice fish in MN and want to paint tungsten panfish jigs myself because the are $2.50-$4.00 a piece. Could possibly do a video on tungsten weights or something?
tyler johnson Tungsten can't be poured or painted at home because you can't heat it up enough to melt or powder coat. You could possibly dip or paint them with dyes or acrylic but it won't stick well.
Maybe dyed epoxy?
Tyler, I'm in MN, too, and have been making my own tungsten jig heads for several years. Have been powder painting them by dipping them in the jar. The powder paint gets on too thick that way, and takes away some of the advantage of tungsten's density. Wired2Fish's fluid bed will help a lot.
I have question. Do it popeye jig using white powder paint. To put the red eyes on what kind of paint should i use?
Would something like Testors Model paint, their enamels, not the acrylic, work for these? I have found those to be pretty durable on other projects, wonder if they would work here?
How do you paint a jig head two different colors? Like a dark top and light bottom?
$1.00 nail polish and some clear coat sealer makes a cheap solution that catches fish. Very cool set up if you need very specific colors to >MATCH THE HATCH" of a specific bait source.
Seen lakes where the large mouth bass have seen just about every color and get quite picky with experience. The custom two tone can make a serious difference. Vital for tournament anglers on the trail for Cash and prises
are there products/powder paints out there that do not require baking?
what brand of powder do You use and what pump do You have?
Where did you get the glitter paint from.
thanks
where did u get your air pump for your fluid bed.....thanks
He made it himself and you can get aerator pump at Walmart, them Fluid Beds are very easy to make
Is there a way of doing this to get a matt finish?
or does that depend on the type of powder paint?
KIAPETE1911 Yeah it depends on the paint. You have to buy paint that is matte.
Do you have to bake or can you just fish them after the first step?
West You can fish them but the paint will chip off pretty quick. Baking them bonds the paint to the lead so they won't chip.
Ok thanks for the help! Ill be doing some baking then!
+Wired2Fish can't epoxy do the same thing but stronger bc you have a thick coat over the paint itself?
where do you get the lead???
Id like to know how much jig can you paint in a liquide bed whit 2 oz powder panting cup to see the aproximative cost for 1 unit can anyone tell me ty !
Tj's Tackle...
I am getting a mess with my fluid bed. Barely cracking the valve. Powder all over the fluid bed Suggestions???
I haven't messed with mine in quite a while, but when I had it spurting powder all over the place it was usually related to powder getting moisture in it and not flowing well with air added to it or the filter I was using was not passing air evenly. Some powders are better about staying dry and some pick up humidity pretty quick and clump. I never found a good way to get the powder to go back to being more fluid. There are some online resources like www.Tackleunderground.com that have a lot of good forum discussions on getting your fluid beds worked out. www.tackleunderground.com/community/topic/23785-diy-fluid-bed-trouble-shooting/
So I did this for the first time today and they looked great until I baked it. Ended up covering the eyes again and dripping in the oven and leaving the jig bubbled and lumped up. Not sure why it did that
what heat gun do Y use?
szycha63 Just the basic one you get from lowes for drying paint. Just stand it up on it's end. :-)
niceeee
Great video. My question is; I just power coated 8 jigs to supposedly a fluorescent red color. I may have held the jig over the heat too long because when I extracted it, the jig, out came a dark red. It was a good coating but nowhere near fluorescent red. Did I hold it over the heat gun too long?
+John Echterhoff May have to do white first, then red.
I did, and it worked fine. Thanks!
Okay, I painted and cured my jigs...Now the fiber weed guard (1/8") don't fit. If I try to Dremel the hole any larger, I am going to throw the hook right into my hand. You guys that add your weed guard after you paint your jigs, please let me know what I need to do. I rather not get hooked!!!
Kerry, I have one of those cordless screwdrivers that runs on batteries that takes a 1/8 drill bit. I can hold the jig fine and clean it out like that. It's a low speed deal so it's not nearly as dangerous. If you're worried put the hook in a vice and clean out the fiber guard hole.

Sometimes I just ask my wife to hold it for me - that way I don't get hurt. I use my hands more than she does, and she doesn't seem to mind.
Are you using tin, instead of lead? Your 3/8oz jig looks too large, more like 1/2oz if not a tad more...
