I just bought an mrx 540 after I had a Pioneer Elite that was 15+ years old. Yes, it does sound better. It's taking some getting used to. I haven't had any firmware issues. Looks like they patched up most of the initial bugs.
Many years ago, I had an Anthem Statement D2. It sounded wonderful. But, it was very buggy. Lots of HDMI handshaking problems. Anthem used to say it was the outer components not sticking to HDMI specs. I eventually replaced the Anthem with the Marantz AV8801. With the same source components, I had zero problems with the Marantz. It was extremely reliable. I’ve since replaced that with a Marantz AV7705. It too is very reliable. No bugs. Anyway, I am again thinking about Anthem. They have a sale on the AVM 70 8K. Now that you’ve had the Anthem for a while now, has it’s software bugs been resolved? Is it stable? I’m tempted to get an Anthem again, but software reliability is important for me.

Hey K-Pace we’re do you think the ceiling is at were it is worth the extra expense to a Anthem over say the Marantz? What kind of system would be fine with an audio video receiver over a pre-pro and separate amps. Even the less expensive receivers with pre outs. I ask because I know room size ,speakers and other factors are important but in our hobby I know we love chasing the best we can get for sound and visuals. I guess what I am asking is when do you know what it is we can get away with before it becomes to much and actually takes away from our goals. Stay safe and thanks for another informative and fun video!
i'll tell you now there isn't a receiver that sounds better than a pre pro. What they put in a pre pro they don't put in a receiver as far as sound quality components goes. you're question is more in regards to speakers than receivers. You can max out on speakers based on the room because of size limitations but generally moving up and up to the next best receiver or processor will continue to give you the best sound available. only thing to remember is that a really good processor will expose bad speakers. So they do need to go hand and hand as far as quality goes if you can
I just ordered my second AVM70 for my garage Klipsch 7.4 System that is replacing the current Marantz AV7705. I currently have the AVM70 in my SVS 7.3 Ultra System that also replaced a Marantz AV7705. All of your points are valid, but it comes down to better performance. The channel separation, clarity and dynamics are just better. The AV7705’s are very nice processors, but the AVM70 is plain noticeably better.
@@Kpaceguy - The AVM70 with ARC Genesis is a game changer. I was going to stick with the AV7705 in the garage, but I spend more time out there and quite frankly, that clarity was missing. The AVM70 has made my systems sound better. I am still using the minidsp 2X4HD’s in both systems as I run triple PC-4000’s and dual SB16’s and dual SB-4000’s
I use the hdmi outs for an oled tv and a projector. Anybody having success, or issues? I contacted Anthem and my local distributer and both say it's depends on your equipment, kind of a crap shoot. this setup works fine on my Marantz 7703
Anthem & Arcam was on my short list upgrading from my Marantz but I decided to go for the NAD T778 , after having Marantz AVRs for year and Pioneer before that I can’t believe the difference in the sound quality even in two channel , I was always messing with the Marantz settings to try and get the sound I wanted but the NAD is just awesome straight out of the box even without Dirac , have you listened to the T778 ?
@@Kpaceguy Quick question,I am between trying to decide the new Marantz Cinema 60 and the Anthem 540. Congrats on catching the fact that Anthem does not include Dynamic EQ. I've watched or read a bunch of Anthem reviews, and you are the only person to mention what I consider an essential feature. This makes everything sound better when listening at low volume levels. As far as I know, Anthem is the only processor without it, though it's called a lot of different things by various manufacturers.
Now I have a question, I know you came from Marantz. And the one you had used the 4458akm dac whereas the anthem avm70 uses the 4490akm. So I’m sure you definitely noticed a difference in sound quality. The question is, with my Marantz 8805 that utilizes the 4490 akm on all channels would I notice any gain? I know it’s all how it’s implemented but this is Marantz flagship you gotta know they put everything they’ve got into the unit I have. Aside being able to fine tweak the anthem is it really any benefit for me to make that change? I thought about 8k, then thought hey I can send my unit in to Marantz to have the 8k board put in and have it rebadged as the 8805a. What would you do?
@@Kpaceguy I stopped the filters on my paradigm speakers because they’re really good. 700hz on the towers 500hz on the center/ surrounds and kept the filter on the atmos. So you think it’s worth it? 🤔 have you heard or owned the 8805?
I've never tried either brand, but Here's an idea I'd like them to steal; have a DSP setting for when the surround satellites are facing up on the floor in the rear corners, like I have in my living room with my JBL GO 2's. I'm using an old THX Pioneer VSX-1014TX as a processer, and the setup ALREADY sounds really good. I was recording some footage today for an upcoming video about how it works, and I thought, wow, imagine it how could be even better if the computer could "Know" you're using the speaker position like that. Credit to Zeos, His idea of up firing floor surrounds works like magic.
Zeos gives bad advice on Home Cinema, that's why there is no DSP for this silly approach to rear placement ... He says the rears can be shitty little speakers because they are unimportant, sure spend thousands on room treatment, seating, popcorn machine, lighting and all that crap but don't spend a $ extra on the rears... The rears are the most important speaker and are the whole reason Home cinema exists... Home cinema DEFINED... Home cinema PERSONIFIED...
@@Echo-jg8is The core of His advice there is how to do something cheaply. You can start off with crappy surrounds and work you way up. The technique I'm talking about works well for people for whom CAN'T INSTALL ROOM TREAMENT, which is MOST PEOPLE. Anyways, the video about my living room setup should be out next month sometime. Be sure to come listen to me ramble for 90 minutes.
@@raidendigital1003 Im using full size home theater direct level three bookshelf speakers as back surrounds placing them on their backs on speakers stands facing up to ceiling. Once I realized my YPAO calibration could not figure this out and was measuring distance to ceiling I manually calibrated distance to listening position and used sound pressure meter for levels. I love the results and the sounds of things overhead on non- atmos material is excellent. It bring the whole room alive with sound.
So as a yamaha user for years, every initial YPAO calibration sets most of my speakers(Polk LSim) to large and I always have to change them manually to small. When you initially run ARC does it set them as small or large the way YPAO does? You mentioned most users first ARC calibration will satisfy them. So are you implying that whatever Anthem sets speakers at is going to give you great sound and you don't have to change it ? It's so scary after using Yamaha for over 30 years to move to an Anthem but I want the best sound I can afford.
Did you end up doing this mate? My current AVR is the Yamaha 3080 and previous was an Onkyo. I'm curious on your thoughts of swapping to to Anthem as I am looking to change mine this year.
For me I would stay with Marantz. Product reliability is awesome, cost is less features are more. Love Auro 3d and Heos. Direct feature is really nice.
Does the AVM70 show your volume on the tv/projector or only on the unit itself? I have my audio rack in a separate room. I could handle no OSD with the menu but not seeing the volume would be rough.
I have never tried outn anthem or arc. I have had all the big box brands. Currently have a Marantz 6011, prev was a Onkyo 630, prior to a pioneer elite lx504. Honestly I liked mcacc better and onkyos accueq even better. I have tried everything with the Marantz I just can't get dialed in. I have had all 3 in same room with same set up and still find its thin and lacking dynamics. Even upgraded to a Rotel 3 channel am for my from sound stage, it was an improvement but still not to the level of the onkyo630. Am I the only 1 here?
No, you are not the only one.🙂 My findings Marantz SR 7013 (5.2.4) vs Harman/Kardon AVR 370 (5.2.2) - Harmans last receiver from 2014. Marantz puts a "veil" over speakers, it can help to reduce xt32 room correction to 200 Hz via Audyssey App. But high frequencys and treble never sound as good as on Harman. Marantz sounds processed, thin, very little dynamics while Harman sounds natural, large and fantastic dynamics in comparison. Marantz bass is all over the place while Harmans is precise, thight and corresponds to the action on the screen (ie. bass "moves" around the room on H/K in sync with movie action). Paning and imaging are outstanding on Harman while none existent on Marantz in comparison. Dolby Atmos sounds better on H/K even though it has 2 fewer spekaers and uses simulated front hights (Dolby Pro Logic IIz) while Marantz uses native Atmos and 4 height speakers (front and rear hights). With sounds better I mean H/K gives you a real sound bubble and goose bumps ie feeling you are there, which I seldom get on Marantz. If I never heard Harman I would give Marantz 8/10. The real score is Marantz 4/10, Harman Kardon 10/10. 👌 Harman all the way! 🙂👍 PS This is true for Dolby Volume set on Medium and in Pro Logic IIz mode (front height speakers) which adds +10 db on top over Dolby Volume. Dolby Calibration engaged as well in acordance with speaker sensitivity. Arcam HDA and Anthem MRX line have Dolby Volume as well (called Dolby Processing Modes Film, Music and Night).
What amplifier do you use with your AVM 70? ...I am thinking of the Anthem AVM 70 or MRX 1140 8K 2.1...for now only going to need a 2 channel amplifier...2 Dali Rubicon 2 speakers and Rel T7x maybe I should use 2....please tell me what direction I should go and what model and if it's the AVM 70 what amp for 2 channel...I'll turn off the other channels
Some advice ? Arcam avr 10/20 Anthem mrx 720 Nad t778 Arcam is the only one with auro 3D unfortunately But the is NAD quite future proof because the mdc they have Anthem not many videos that I can find but the reviews are good Coming from a lifestyle 535 🙈
@@Kpaceguy ok, good to know. How about this perspective. If you didn't already own it and we're going to be buying today, would you still be purchasing it?
How is the sound quality for 2-channel music? Would you ever consider running the L and R channels through a dedicated integrated amp (with HT bypass) to have a separate system dedicated for music? Or would that be totally unnecessary with this pre-pro?
I don't know what camera you're using but I'm looking at some of the best visuals I've seen on my phone! When I first purchased a open box Denon receiver (6500h) I experience such an awful Digital sound that I thought there was something wrong with it, so I returned it and purchased a brand new one and then only to find out actually, this is what Denon receivers sound like 😲 IMO...Denon receivers have the worst digital sounding amplifiers on the market!
Again: My English is sometime bad because of correction by Apple. Every word I was corrected into Dutch and it took a lot of time to make the response on your video.
Marantz is older unit and Anthem is just came out, not fair comparison in that regard. Anthem is new design ground up, the difference between Anthem and Marantz is ARC in favor of Anthem this is what everyone paying extra. Anthem is not for everyone though. it could be frustrating for novice. with anthem tweaking is needed with knowledge, this why anthem is great. this is similar to DIRAC which is on par with ARC. I have DIRAC on my Lexicon unit.
I can't remember off the top of my head. My original unboxing video will tell you though. Shows front and back ruclips.net/video/BaSy7hoFmhI/видео.html
You push to much small annoying thing. I have an app on my phone for my Denon to adjust features. Also now wit h new Audyssey x version will have a dedicated more professional mic and Audyssey is more advance in technology than anthem arc genesis. Don’t make me wrong you do good job in reviews. But this one you push to much. I’m also going with the avm70 soon.
A long time ago I bought a marantz receiver to cost me 6000$ canadian before that marantz and Denon came a same compagny and the unit over dvd had a video issue. It was all marantz video board. When in a james bond movies there was explosiobn there was video noise feedback. So the store took back the unit and I bought the denon Avr 5800 for few $$ less. I had in the past Also anthem. I sold it to return with denon 6300h. Anthem add kind of like non stable behavior and they were taking long time to correct it. So that why I came back with Denon more stable unit. So I will take another shot with that avm70 that they start to be more mature in their correction bug issue that I read about
You seem a cool Great review guy. You make me take my decision yesterday by ordering and try a monolith 7 channel instead going back with an Emotiva. I will keep listening at you great day
sound quality is subjective i personally like the denon/marantz more, i agree arc is a step up from audessey but its far to complicated to most peoples out there, Denon/Marantz will get you more for you bucks with the latest hdmi board not like the anthem where you will need to change in a few month... Denon/Marantz will get you straight to the point with solid performance. the Anthem is buggy horrible interface and complicated as hell... not that i don't like paradigm, i got all paradigm speakers and i live almost beside it in Canada... i returned my anthem processor very quickly because was to buggy complicated and sound quality was not there, you need to stop telling people how good it sound compered to marantz because its not true. in fact most people will return this asap because for the price point don't not do justice over the Marantz, if you like room correction that much go with dirac and you be more happy
In the beginning you told me sound quality is subjective and then the end you told me I'm wrong lol you gotta pick one. Also, you can't tell the Marantz is better because YOU decided not to learn how to use the anthem. Quite possibly if tried to learn the complicated stuff, your thoughts on sound quality would change

I need your kind of money
Well you know I’m in the market for a pre pro my friend…. I was set on XMC 2, but no EARC. I think it’s going to be AVM 70
I have very shortly
@@Kpaceguy Quick question,I am between trying to decide the new Marantz Cinema 60 and the Anthem 540. In several owner reviews they mention the fan on the Anthem is so loud and intrusive it is cause for returning the unit.
What is you buddy's experience thus far having lived with the 540 for some time now?
Any and all insights would be aprreciated...Thanks!
@@balooo2863 I never hear the fan
Nice video bro. I'm about to pull the trigger on a new reciever it was the Marantz Sr8015 but now u mite have talked me Into getting a Anthem mrx 1140 hahaha. I have a ps5 so would be nice if the Anthem had hdmi 2.1 but 😔
I had Marantz couple years and I won't buy again anymore. My older and then newer Onkyo were much better in terms of sound and software/menu. Anthem will definitely my next. I heard in show room with speakers I know very well and it was amazing. Expressive and dynamic.
I am all about about sound quality
I'm going for the mrx1140
What are your thoughts on Rotel receivers?
I wanted one growing up. Don't hear too much buzz about them anymore but I know they're quality stuff
I wish you would look into the mtx line of speakers
Which ones
@@Kpaceguy mtx has center channel and tower speakers
How does it sound in two channel audio? Is there a true bypass option?
Two channel is beyond incredible although I haven't found a "pure direct" type of mode yet
have yamaha and thats about same load up time and also remote powers up my roksan amp ...
i am looking at the anthem 540 , also arcam but am swinging to anthem , i have yamaha rxa 1080
for about 5 years , i have had a few av receivers right back to when dolby pro logic was the bees knees ..
have had about 3 or 4 yamaha and never had a problem with them , they are well made .
my front speakers are kef ls50 meta and the yam does not do them any justice , the roksan attessa streaming
amp sounds superb ...
i feel like a change , would still be driving the fronts ( pre outs ) with the roksan , i only have 5.1 as not too big room .
i have kilipch reference center and use quad 11 L as rear and have svs 3000 micro sub...
dont like the new yamaha as screen is small and marantz have small round window ( should get some binoculars in the box ..
like the screen on the anthem ..
its just its a smaller brand and have never owned so no confidence , i hear arcams have a lot of bugs ...
The marantz video seemed to be more "living with" things you liked, but with the Anthem, it seemed more about performance.
I'll go with the Anthem
Congrats on catching the fact that Anthem does not include Dynamic EQ. I've watched or read a bunch of Anthem reviews, and you are the only person to mention what I consider an essential feature. This makes everything sound better when listening at low volume levels. As far as I know, Anthem is the only processor without it, though it's called a lot of different things by various manufacturers.
While this all may be true, I'll tell you I haven't missed the feature at all.
It comes down to are you going to sit down and utilize the Calibration sound of things and further separate it from the Marantz
@@Kpaceguy I stopped the filters on my paradigm speakers because they’re really good. 700hz on the towers 500hz on the center/ surrounds and kept the filter on the atmos. So you think it’s worth it? 🤔 have you heard or owned the 8805?
@@JoseGonzalez-zq7bn I've heard it. Didn't Own it.
what is the best receiver all around at the 600 dollar and 800 dollar price point
Yamaha
Hey man did you get the app to work?
I´m so jealous that you have this pre amp, in the future I will buy this and just sit back and enjoy my life.
Haven't figured it out yet
@@mattgiunt You should check out the review I did on my channel where I set up 2 pairs of speakers in an abandoned house. It was a lot of fun to make.
Good video
Thank you
Can you compare it to the AVM90 ?
More than likely not. Those things are hard to get right now
Seen online the fan is annoyingly loud?
Mine never kicks on. There was a bug a year ago where it wouldn't turn off. Long been fixed
Anthem doesn't do "large or small". It'll always set the smoothest crossover it thinks it should select
@@Kpaceguy Wow- that's great. thanks
Did you end up doing this mate? My current AVR is the Yamaha 3080 and previous was an Onkyo. I'm curious on your thoughts of swapping to to Anthem as I am looking to change mine this year.
@@skian33 not yet and that new Sony receiver has my attention
For me I would stay with Marantz. Product reliability is awesome, cost is less features are more. Love Auro 3d and Heos. Direct feature is really nice.
Marantz avr probably due from heat
Does the AVM70 show your volume on the tv/projector or only on the unit itself? I have my audio rack in a separate room. I could handle no OSD with the menu but not seeing the volume would be rough.
Yes shows volume and input selection as well as what sound format you're listening to
I have never tried outn anthem or arc.
Harman all the way! 🙂👍
PS This is true for Dolby Volume set on Medium and in Pro Logic IIz mode (front height speakers) which adds +10 db on top over Dolby Volume.

Arcam avr 10/20
Anthem mrx 720
Nad t778
Arcam is the only one with auro 3D unfortunately
But the is NAD quite future proof because the mdc they have
Anthem not many videos that I can find but the reviews are good
Coming from a lifestyle 535 🙈
If auro 3D is the only reason why the Arcam is on the list, take it off. Not much content support. Other two will come down to how they do Calibration
Anthem mrx 1120 or marantz 8012 for sound quality power and specs

How is the sound quality for 2-channel music? Would you ever consider running the L and R channels through a dedicated integrated amp (with HT bypass) to have a separate system dedicated for music? Or would that be totally unnecessary with this pre-pro?
2ch is phenomenal. I'd find it to be unnecessary

When I first purchased a open box Denon receiver (6500h) I experience such an awful Digital sound that I thought there was something wrong with it, so I returned it and purchased a brand new one and then only to find out actually, this is what Denon receivers sound like 😲
IMO...Denon receivers have the worst digital sounding amplifiers on the market!

I ran arc twice so far really good 👍
Just ran ARC for the first time about 3 hours ago
I was waiting for this 👌🤣
Heck yeah
This might be a repeat. I dropped my mouse! Kind of screwed up now! BUT - who cares about that!!!
The pros of the Anthem are FAR more important than the pros of the Marantz.
The AV8805 is more on par with this and not the AV7705.
Trinnov is 4x the price or more. Lyngdorf is 3x. Really best value in home theater
I have Marantz, I know emotiva sounds better. I just wonder if Anthem is better than Emotiva?!?!?!
Sheesh! it'll be close
EASY as 1 2 3 (ARC )

But this one you push to much. I’m also going with the avm70 soon.
When you spend this much money on all this stuff, nothing is small
A long time ago I bought a marantz receiver to cost me 6000$ canadian before that marantz and Denon came a same compagny and the unit over dvd had a video issue. It was all marantz video board. When in a james bond movies there was explosiobn there was video noise feedback. So the store took back the unit and I bought the denon Avr 5800 for few $$ less. I had in the past Also anthem. I sold it to return with denon 6300h. Anthem add kind of like non stable behavior and they were taking long time to correct it. So that why I came back with Denon more stable unit. So I will take another shot with that avm70 that they start to be more mature in their correction bug issue that I read about
You seem a cool
Great review guy. You make me take my decision yesterday by ordering and try a monolith 7 channel instead going back with an Emotiva. I will keep listening at you great day
@@ericbelmont8765 I appreciate it my friend
sound quality is subjective i personally like the denon/marantz more, i agree arc is a step up from audessey but its far to complicated to most peoples out there, Denon/Marantz will get you more for you bucks with the latest hdmi board not like the anthem where you will need to change in a few month...
