      @@SpecOfTech Barrett i have a question for you. I went from a AVM70 4k to a AVM90 running ARC1.7.4 on both units. Both units are on the most current firmware. I went play some content and i noticed that it was a lot louder. I compared ARC files. While the measurements look really similar. I noticed that the AVM90 speaker levels were 6-7db higher than where they were set for the AVM70. Did you notice anything like that when you upgraded? Thanks in advance. Edward

    I will chime here on my experience. I initially had an NAD M17 V2i with the NAD M28 with M&K S150 IIIs across the front stage. The sound was crystal clear, detailed. One of my HDMI ports went bad, so I sold the unit.
    I then bought and hooked up the Anthem AVM 70 8K. The sound was fuller and had a larger soundstage, but not as clear and a smidge less detail. Then I returned that unit and went to the AVM 90. The AVM 90 was definitely clearer than the AVM 70, while still having a large soundstage, fuller sound and just as much detail as the M17. Looking back and remembering the M17, it sounded thinner than the AVM 90. I consider the AVM 90 as the end game processor for now.

      @Spec Of Tech At first I really thought it couldn't get any better than 7.2.4. I thought I wouldn't hear any chan separation with 15 speakers but I was wrong. Sound is everywhere. If I had 8k to play with I would've brought the 90 but I paid for 70k in 3 installments through Crutchfield so im very happy.

    AVM70 comment update. I had this processor paired with one of the two major entry level brand amps. $2,200. (11ch) They call the Amp an "Audiophile quality" but i just found out my sound suffered with the BW 702 S2. I have just now paired the processor with an Anthem MCA325. What a difference! Better detail and tighter bass. If you are going to buy a processor, pair it with a decent Amp or buying it doesn't make much sense.

    Listening to your music samples through a desktop computer with small Tannoy powered monitors, I hear more clarity and detail in the bass for the AVM90 over the AVM70. I hear the same above the bass level, but it's less noticeable. For the movie samples, both sound good (considering how I'm experiencing the audio), but it seems like I'm hearing more of what I expect to hear from the AVM90, given what I'm seeing on screen. The AVM90 lets me hear what I couldn't hear with he AVM70. That's alway what I hope for if I'm going to spend more money. Both are pleasing, but it's amazing to hear things in your favorite sources you've never heard before.
    Thanks for the video; I've been waiting for it since your review of the AVM90. I like your description and characterizations of your experience. You gave me a good feel for what double-the-cost would provide. I like your take on it: the AVM70 is a great experience, but if the budget allows and you want it to be even better, consider the AVM90. Maybe I'll find out! Thanks again.

    Hey. Nice videos. I am out here in the burbs of Toronto. I hear more bass on the 90 than the 70. Are you sure things were matched? I can't imagine the 90 putting out so much more bass. Listening on both my setup in my home theatre via youtube from a firestick with full range PSB tower front centre right and a Mirage BPS-400 subwoofer with zero calibration and on my headphones from my laptop I notice a significant increase in bass on the 90 vs the 70 with and without you using ARC in the last clip. It seems like a very large rather pronounced difference. In the Brooklyn and the Bridge example, it seems like the bass is completely missing with the 70 vs the 90. Are you sure everything was level matched? At first I thought it was because you were using 4 subwoofers which you had independent control over to calibrate with the 90 but it seems like even without ARC the bass seemed almost as if it was absent with the 70. Was there any calibration done to the 70 and 90 when you did not have ARC engaged? I am looking at upgrading my very old Marantz AV7005 prepro one day to another Marantz like an AV7704, 7706, 8802 or 8805 etc but I am also considering the AVM 70. I think the 90 is out of my price range at almost $9k plus cad!. Great videos. Keep up the good work.

Avm90 opened up the speakers with better clarity and crispness. The avm70 made movies sound muffled. Both did good with music, both sounded better with arc off. Great video! AV processors are a very competitive market segment. Its brain damage with all the options. The day Anthem released the new AVM series, it changed the landscape in a good way. Style, performance, and tech. If I was looking for a new processor, it would be the AVM70 hands down. Has everything I would ever need for a (what I think) is a great price. The MRX series is awesome too, compared to the big box brands IMO. At the time when I was looking at a new processor, I chose the NAD M17v2, which I really like. BluOs streaming built in, and Dirac. The AVM series was not quite available yet. The NAD is somewhat old school compared to the Anthem. Much simpler, basic even. It has just what is necessary. Why did you recorded the sound demo comparisons in mono???

  • @scaf_007vs3
    @scaf_007vs3 Год назад

    I'd be curious how the AVM 90 sound compares to my "somewhat" outdated Marantz AV8802a. I say somewhat because I'm able to play video games in 4K @120hz via enhanced ARC, and I still have all the audio channels I need for my surround setup. I noticed a significant quality increase from my previous marantz AV7702 as in the 8802a was not only more detailed but also did so by sounding smoother in the treble overall. My music listening is done via dedicated 2 channel preamps now, but I will say music through the 8802a sounded very good for a home theater pre/pro.

    • @SpecOfTech
      @SpecOfTech  Год назад +2

      I can't speak for the 8802 in particular, but I did have the Marantz AV7706. The AVM90 is significantly better than the AV7706 IMO. I compared the AVM70 to the AV7706 and much preferred the AVM70. With that in mind, my gut tells me the AVM90 would be noticeably better than the 8802. But since I have never heard the 8802, take that with a grain of salt.

      @scaf_007vs3 Год назад

      @@SpecOfTech Yeah im just not sure. The 8802 was a pretty big difference from the 7000 series at the time. Either way, I'm happy with my system until I have to make a move out of necessity. For movies and gaming it's more than "good enough" and music I'm always using a separate 2 channel preamp anyways. It's always fun to compare nonetheless!

  • @mfkhometheater7742

    Great video but I couldn't really hear any difference on my laptop and the little bluetooth speaker here in my hotel room. I don't really have any use for the additional features of the 90 like the four subwoofer channels or automatic room correction. I normally don't use subwoofer outputs anyway, I just use the miniDSP to create the subwoofer channels and I do the EQ manually.
    As for sound quality differences I would need to hear both myself to determine if I could hear a difference and I would need someone to test me with blind test. I know a lot of audiophiles and I know how easy it is for audiophiles to imagine or exaggerate sound, "improvements" whether they exist or not. Not saying you don't hear the improvements you hear, just that I've seen it too many times and experienced it myself. Years ago at a CES show someone told us our speakers would sound much better if we would just drive them with those nice tube amplifiers we had sitting off to the side. Later when they came back, we had it set up to look like we were using the tube amplifiers but were still using the solid state. Still, somehow they heard a, "huge improvement" in the sound. It's just the nature of the hobby unfortunately.
    My old AVM60 is working again, I just took the top off and put it back on and it started working so I didn't have to send it back to Anthem. While I don't really like the company due to less than impressive experiences with their customer support, I do like their products. Years ago I had the AVM20 then the D2 and now the AVM60 and I like the user interface on all. I have a Marantz AV7705 downstairs and don't really like the interface at all. So despite not liking Anthem as a company I'll probably end up with an AVM70 to replace the 60. I will consider the 90 however, you might be right, it may actually sound noticeably better. Of course by the time I finish building the darn theater those may be obsolete and I'll be watching your video comparing the latest models to decide on one of those.

    • @SpecOfTech
      @SpecOfTech  Год назад +2

      I would have liked to do blind testing, but it's really difficult in a home setting on a pre/pro. Without a lot of work and extra gear added to the signal path, you can't really switch quickly between 2 processors. On the other hand I do have a nice setup for switching between speakers for blind A/B.
      You aren't wrong, when not doing A/B people can be susceptible to preconceived biases. Next time try using a good pair of headphones or your system at home for listening to the demos. I know that RUclips is not the greatest way to demo something, but differences can be heard. Even though my equipment, my room and your device affect the sound, not to mention RUclips compressing it. It does lesson the the gap between these 2 processors, but I assure you, the AVM90 is noticeably better.
