Quite literally had a gym teacher who thought asthma was made up. He legitimately thought asthma wasn't real and was an excuse for people to be lazy.
Had another gym teacher CONSTANTLY say "You know you have an F in this class, right?" which I'd reply "Yeah, I know. Nothing I can do about it."
Have you ever watched Glee? My choir teacher was EXACTLY like that teacher in Glee. He is so messed up...AND ABLEIST! I joined choir because I love singing. But my choir teacher wanted it to be a show choir. Two shows a year involved dancing. If I thought he was ableist towards me, this kid had a broken leg and he was still made to run and dance!
School trip. It was a five day overnight trip. I go to sleep early. By 11PM I'm fast asleep. Woken up by the teachers and made to go outside into the hall of the hotel. These teachers told me I was LYING ABOUT HAVING ASTHMA! They said they called the school nurse to ask about my asthma, and she said I've never gone to see her about it. Quick question! Why the fuck would I walk all the way to the nurses office when having an asthma attack? But the teacher said he wouldn't argue with me about it and I need to stop being difficult for the chaperones. They also split me and the other disabled kid into seperate groups because we were advocating for each other's needs and I guess the chaperones couldn't handle that.
What's funny is that in that last paragraph, it was the choir and band teachers who woke me up. Same choir teacher who has been aware FOR YEARS that I have asthma. Same band teacher who I had let know on multiple occasions I had asthma, as that's important info to know when you're a part of marching band. These men KNEW I was asthmatic, but it was making things difficult on their part so acted like they didn't. If I didn't have asthma, that sure was a long con.
Anyway......if you are in school, it may be scary to confront authority but do it anyway. High school doesn't matter. Stick up for yourself while you still can. They might expel you, but it's not like you're losing income. You can be a nuisance to the authority around you and still graduate. Being a teen with no say in your life sucks, so be a prick about it! Everyone expects teens to be the worst. You can get away with it cuz "horomones" so use that to your advantage! High school will be hell no matter what you do, so do what you want. Spend your summer vacation practising taking no shit.

Undiagnosed autistic people are tend to be more hateful in their ableism. I know someone whom I believe is autistic do the absolute most towards autistic people and actively hate on autistic people who have autistic meltdowns.

i agree with what youre saying! my dad is like this. im pretty sure i got my autism from his side of the family bc his sister is the only other person in my family with an autism diagnosis. he shows a lot of symptoms though and i think he is autistic. hes also extremely ableist. he makes fun of me when i have meltdowns, when i stim, and calls autistic people’s brains ‘broken’. its really annoying that he says hes ‘supportive’ but then he does shit like that
I have been like this once .. except I’ve always known I’m autistic (diagnosed at 6.) I’m not proud of the shit I’ve done. I’ve been an absolute asshole to a old friend of mine, but I doubt they considered me their friend. I wish I could apologise to them now but I don’t think we’ll see each other again
There's also the fact that if you are considered "higher functioning", it's so easy to fall into the rabbit hole of thinking less of people as long as they are less "functional". I feel like this is a unique subset of gifted kid burnout in my experience. I was very susceptible to ableist ideas despite being diagnosed from an early age and would even say that I wasn't autistic (less of me being in denial and more that I was not properly educated on what that meant and didn't care about my diagnosis). It didn't help that my mother would respond to the question of "is your daughter autistic?" With "yes but she's gifted/high IQ/twice exceptional/well adjusted". Really skewed my perception of disability for a very long time

Hey, BTW, nonverbal people on the internet have started advocating for people to use things like losing speech instead. Nonverbal refers to a permanent state of being, and nonverbal autistic people feel as though they are having their terms taken away from them.
One of the nonverbal people I follow on Tumblr said specifically "you might 'go nonverbal' but I can't 'go verbal'"
As a semiverbal(also a permanent state)autistic person who was nonverbal as a child, please don't say "going nonverbal" as doing so is taking away a label for people who can never speak.

Even as someone who isn't fat, these comments have always bothered me when they're said to the people around me. My aunt and mom are both so horribly critical on their bodies because of comments like these, where it's basically like "yeah you've got a good personality, even if you're ugly :)" and it makes me feel so horrible for them and with them. It makes me so mad because it's just straight up insulting, plus it's like dude, who tf doesn't love all that glorious fat on their partner? It's so soft and makes the most beautiful curves and dimples and lines on a body, which I think is simply stunning. So a bit of an update since it’s been a while since I filled you guys in (and because I care about you guys and want to share): These videos have helped once again, since I’ve been putting on weight. Not entirely on my own accord, definitely some genetics and bad diet, the latter of which isn’t helped by the ‘tism being scared off by fruit and vegetables. Still, even though I’m not that big, around 200 lbs, I still felt bad about it since I was being told it would cause risks and just seeing myself larger than I was used to. The Tiktoks showing body positivity really helped me feel that bit more comfortable with myself. Body dysphoria isn’t a gendered issue, anybody can experience it and similarly anyone can heal it. I thought for a long time as a kid that I would feel comfortable with myself whatever shape I took, and it took getting a dad bod at 18 to realize that I could still fall into that trap, and it took some time to heal from it.
only downside about being in this community is i keep getting conservative content on my youtube shorts that keep missing the entire point of the videos they react to like bro im literally running at 2.5 miles per hour and i can still understand what they are saying (most common person to be recommended is brett cooper pleaes send help im begging 😭)
but a good thing is tht ive started recognizing people in the shorts section and these videos :^) (both the people in this community and the people making the tiktoks)

I am constantly bombarded with like right wing podcasts (think like men's rights people or big right wing media people) and stuff no matter how many times I dislike or do the "do not recommend" thing
Either that or there's just so much right wing content even a decent algorithm can't filter it all, which seems at least partially true
I don't know if there's a fix beyond mass purging everything by spending 10 minutes just saying to not recommend and just hoping that lasts (I've had instances where I said do not recommend and I got them recommended like two months later)

Growing up poor really does traumatize you, because for most of my life we lived in a single income household ( my dad is a mechanic and I have 2 younger siblings so everything plus that means expensive) but last year my mom started working so we now have a more money and can afford to spend more, a few days ago I felt guilty because we spent over 300 dollars while shopping (100 for groceries 200 for clothes and toys)
Well, the guilt won't undo the shopping so enjoy your new clothes and the comfort you'll get from them and I hope the toys are also played with excessively and are cherished very much. ❤

I was talking to my dad yesterday about how it's wild that we are rich, but no one would actually consider us rich. I used to have a teacher who would say we should be able to afford all supplies necessary for a school project, because none of us were as poor as she was growing up. But I was. Up until a few years ago, we were poor. Poor enough that a lot of my teachers I had growing up tried to give me clothes and toys. I was given food in bookbags to take home. All that jazz.
Now though, most weeks are a breeze. Every once in a while there will be big bills and we need to watch what we spend, but for the most part it's no sweat. All the bills get paid, all the groceries are covered. We can afford snacks. Most weeks we buy a DVD or two. On top of that, if I want something extra it's no big deal. I want a book? Go for it. A boxset of a show I like is for sale? I can have it. A Rainbow High doll? Put it in the cart. Pretty much every time I want something extra while shopping, I can have it. Sometimes it's a no, or even like last week I had to use my own money.
But this is what the world calls "living comfortably" not being rich. But how is it not rich? We have many DVDs at our house. My father used to be extremely against the idea of buying DVDs because he saw them as a waste of money. I was never allowed books because we couldn't afford it. This year alone I have gotten many books! Probably about six books. How is this not being rich?
My french class today was awful, so that's fun, but besides that, I wish there was more diversity within like, mainstream stuff. Like, it's not hard?? Do research, talk to people, its quite simple. Like, we can do so much better than we have. When there is representation, its the same tired, old tropes, and I want something so much more than that.

3:50 I didn't actually know that was potentially dangerous 😅I have a very distinct memory of being held in a prone restraint by a cop in my elementary school (call it 4th grade?) and though the masking/suppression of emotions that followed wasn't great, now I'm just glad I avoided getting held down by a grown ass man more than once.
And that last one... hooo boy. I tried to get somewhere for any kind of treatment by applying for disability (my counsellor told me it'd be the government's responsibility to get my medical info and I could potentially get some diagnoses like that) and when I said I worked as an RA, the way he reacted made me immediately think "Yeah, this has been a waste of my time."

I was disassociating by 5th grade, and when I brought it up (exactly once), I got told "Don't think about it."
When I say do not move to the bible belt, I mean *do not* move to the bible belt. Having a cop in the school was already normal for my particular elementary by the later half of the 2000s. I lived in the suburbs of Louisiana. The school-prison pipeline is real, especially given our POC population.
These people were so bad at handling children that I caused multiple lockdowns because of autistic meltdowns (which only escalated due to incompetent adults).
One of my favorite party stories is how I managed to get handcuffed in third grade because another grown man grabbed my wrist when I was taking a very literal interpretation of the rules he laid out (and I was already upset because I didn't understand why what I'd done was wrong). And I still didn't even get tested for anything, let alone diagnosed. I only found out in the last year that what they'd called my condition ("Explosive Child Syndrome") isn't even a thing.
I cannot express how essential it was as an autistic person to get the hell out of dodge.

Today I finished all my drawings. I did eight drawings for the game Mystic Messenger. They were all of MC wearing different character's clothes. It wasn't their iconic outfits, because those characters are busy wearing those outfits. So, instead of wearing Zen's white coat/jacket, MC was wearing his blue button up and motorcycle jacket. Instead of Jumin's pinstripe dress shirt, MC wore a pinstriped blazer.
I drew MC in clothes of everyone with a route plus Vanderwood. It took five days to accomplish, and thirty-three hours in total. If YT will let me, I'll write down where to find the post with the drawings in a reply to this.

Played beatsaber yesterday, which is super fun! I played it so much, that my arms started hurting lol. Afterwords, Me and my partner/friend (it’s complicated, they said they might be aromantic, so they might not be part of the polycule anymore) played Keep Talking and Nobody explodes, which is a game about defusing bombs!
I also watched a 3 hour video on the lore of danganrompa 😅

I started shadowing this week! I'm shadowing a mutual aid group in my city, and so far it's been awesome. I'm just a bit sad rn because I won't have a way to get there after I've finished all my hours. I think what you said does sound a bit mean and could've hit an insecurity. But also, same. I used to have a girlfriend who apologised for me ALL THE TIME (was super frustrating) because I was "arguing" with someone and the other person was getting upset and I didn't notice. It was fun for me. A stimulating conversation where we don't agree on something incredibly arbitrary. But I guess the other person would be getting frustrated and didn't like that type of conversation.

What I was /trying/ to go for was how he'd just name random pokemon, but then I'd just name "lion (object)" to counter. I understand but I wish he had said something before it got that far

Like.......what? WHAT!? You can be out of breath and it's *NOT* the end of the world???????? Like...when working out, you can be at your limit, out of breath, and simply push through it? YOU LITERALLY CAN BE OUT OF BREATH AND KEEP GOING!? IT MAKES NO SENSE! In order to live, we must breathe. How can you be out of breath and be FINE??????? When an inhaler is being used, I can ride a bike. I can be out of breath, doing manual labour, and then not collapse on the ground gasping for air??????

People would freak out and ask if I'm okay and I'd just be like "Yeah, I have asthma. Just give me a few minutes." Which, I stand by that. In the UK there's a test on British history and culture to emigrate here and when my mum (who moved to Scotland from Australia) was looking at it again she got me, my brother and my dad to try it (we all grew up in Scotland) and none of us passed because it's not information that anyone uses in everyday life unless they're teaching people how to study for and pass this test.
For the old Australian system, I was in Australia last year with my immediate family visiting my mum's family and high school friends and generally being tourists and we went to the immigration museum which details the history of emigration to Australia since it was colonised and at one point they had a white Australia policy where they would make people who they didn't think were "white enough" do dictations in European languages and would keep going in different languages until you failed no matter how many you had passed in.

What do you do when volunteering at your library?
In the past week I've gone to by library twice! It was the first time since before the pandemic. I love my library! I've been borrowing lots of books (I used to just use the online catalog); today I read the Fish Girl (3/5 stars) and I'm currently reading Miles Morales: Suspended by Jason Reynolds. I recently finished Where You See Yourself by Claire Forrest (5/5 - very good on the perspective of a teen (17-18yo) wheelchair user; she also has cerebral palsy) and Pie in the Sky by Remy Lai(5/5 - *so good* 😭)! Today I went for the second time and painted two rocks (I painted a house and a Korean radish [무/'mu'].) :D Have you read anything recently?

The first one I was helping with an event they had for young kids, setting up tables, getting supplies, counting adults and children, and generally making sure people are good. The one I did today was a more laid-back one where I just logged people's reading times and gave them prizes. That gave a lot of spare time to read How The Word Is Passed by Clint Smith, 10/10 so far. That's the only book I've been reading recently, thanks for sharing your reads, I'll probably check some out!
