- In this video I break down the actual cost of going to ATP flight school. The only thing that was not mentioned in this video was buying a subscription to Foreflight, which is an application that is required for the Ipad. The subscription cost can range from $100-$300 yearly. You do get a discount as an ATP student.

There is a student loan from Sallie Mae. The loan is for a technical degree/certificate with ATP flight school as an approved school.
Thankful for this breakdown. Plain and dry just like I hoped for.
thank you so much for the break down in this video! greatly appreciate it!
Hello pilots. Be careful paying tons of money to get into a flying career. If you have the cash already great, but if you're going into debt / loans really think about what you're getting into. Right now flying is good, but that could change rapidly. This profession is highly cyclical and unpredictable. Don't get stuck with $100,000 in debt for the next 20 years with no degree or anything else to show for it besides flight training if aviation takes a dump. I personally paid $35,000 in 1995 ($66,000 todays dollars) for a 4 year degree, private, instrument, commercial, multi, cfi when the industry was total crap for the foreseeable future. It worked out but flying for a career was a very long road. I'll make more than $3,000,000 over the next 10 years but I didn't break 6 figures for many, many years and lived in dumps for a long time before that. Hopefully it'll happen much faster for you. Not trying to discourage. Just be careful.
what flight school did u go to?
You might be right its not an investment its a gamble.

best break down video on YT! thanks Wingman!
Love the videos!!! Keep them coming, there very informative for us younger ones trying to get into aviation.
Chris Vega thanks man!
And even us older (Pappy) ones ;)…
thank you so much for the video I'm concerned about going to ATP and after watching this it helps so much !
I remember going to what was then Delta Connection Academy in Sanford Fl and Regional Airline Academy in Deland Fl....used Sally Mae loans as well but I just couldnt get a co signer. Anyway here is a better Idea....look into buying an airplane and then use it for training. When youre done, sell it and recoupe some of the money instead of borrowing from a bank.
This video is SO helpful! Thank you!
Big inspiration, Awesome video had everything I needed to hear🤝

Love the video. had a lot of question about it. thank you sir.
Thank you, you cleared my mind.
MAN this is very helpful, thank you!
Thanks for all the helpful information
great video brother!!!!
Hey I just watched a few of your videos. They are great and you are awesome at creating content, which is a great skill, regardless of flight skills at all. I have a question for you. When you look back on your experiences in flight school, how much does natural ability to fly an airplane as far as coordination and innate control over the aircraft have to play into your experience? Is it meaningless as opposed to just studying the rules and mastering knowledge of the aircraft? Or is it an advantage compared to others who may have more knowledge but aren't used to maybe controlling different machines? I'm curious to hear your opinion on this. Thanks for your time!
This career requires skill that not everyone has. In other words, not everyone can do it. I built my skills to the point where I’m a good pilot, but I’m not “a natural stick and rudder”. That’s not a requirement but you better be passionate about doing this and always continue your learning and skill building to be successful in this career.
Thanks for the info man
Thank you for the detailed video. It is financially healthy to share stuff like this. I wanted to ask if ATP has a non-accelerated program. I work full time at X airport and make Y amount good money and I want to take off a career as a pilot, no rush, say in 2 years. I am planning on paying out of pocket for at least half of that 80k.
Thank you for information !!!! I have forgot the bank loan.
Do a video of the housing situation
I went to my local atp a few years ago with 0 time, they told me because I had no college education they wouldn’t accept my application. I went back and forth via emails with customer service trying to find a work around. Apparently they offer some exceptions but for some reason I didn’t qualify for those exceptions. It’s was the most disappointing experience of my life to know that I have to figure out a way to pay for everything out of pocket for all my training. I ended up going to a part 61 school , till I ran out of money at my first check ride. Then the pandemic hit and lost my job , here I am a few years later in a different state and I’m gonna try again to see if it’s possible I can join the school
What were their “exceptions”? And I believe they would accept you with a PPL without college education.
@@jaretwinters5581the instructor told me that they had exceptions to the rules , kind of like a waiver you’d get in the military. One of those exceptions was coming in with your PPL and not having college. The second being ( iirc ) straight out of high school they will waive the college time and then the third option was something based on your income. But these are exceptions that are very rarely granted apparently. the instructor I met with was trying to help by also emailing the head of that school. If I had a few college credit hours it probably would have helped but I never went to college longer than two weeks. At this point I have 33.9 hours of time accumulated so I’m technically 6.1 hours away from being at the FAA minimum for my ppl but now I’ve moved and I’m gonna try and see what ATP says now

I couldn't get my college degree because English 101 killed me so I quite college and did something elts and right now I'm a truck driver doing dedicated run with Coke Cola. Drove with Walmart for 7 years and doing Coke for 4 years.
@@Neptune8 I would recommend just going through part 141 universities or flight schools unless you really believe you can go through ATP and everything, they teach you and not get kicked out. I know a friend who went to ATP and couldn't keep up with them, lost all the money he put in, and all the education he was going to get. There are a lot of pros and cons to them both, its really just up to you and the way your life is going.
very good info vid on ATP.. Goodluck.
Are u airline pilot by .now.. 3yrs later. Where r you now?

Hello Micah, I've got a question related to the intro flight. I'm currently a senior in hs and am looking to start flight training after completing my bachelor's. The question is that since I am planning on taking an intro flight in January, do you recommend I do it at ATP and let them know about my plan or at a different school?
Do they send you out on a jet airliners or something like a small airplane?
Hey man, what do you do for work while in flight school?
What a difference 2 years makes. Now it’s like $90k+ for the Fast Track
Correct, and you know get less out of it as well. Written tests/study material for them are not included
@@pilot_micah does the 90k cover living and housing as well?
@@ImPewPew4 it does not
hey! What is your status now? Did you land an airline pilot job? If so, how long after completion?
hi micah, im currently 19 years old and im thinking about applying to atp.My question is, if you get stuck on lesson and you dont fully understand something, do the instructor take time to help you out or do you figure out everything on your on to catch up? my main concern is that i dont want to get kicked out because im taking too long to catch up.
James Ramirez I mean it’s kind of both, it is your responsibility to keep up and not get behind, but your instructor is also there to help you. They do hold grounds where they go over different topics, and they are there to help you with things you don’t fully understand
So, for that $80,995 price, what ratings exactly did you get? Was the Multi-Engine and MEI additional on top of that price, or included?
It was all included, you take a total of 7 checkrides. Private though commercial SE and ME as well as all three CFI ratings
@@pilot_micah Thank you. And the DPE fees and written exams were extra, correct? I'm guessing $700 to $1,000 for DPE fees and $160 for each written?
@@Jetfuture737 Correct, they recently restructured the cost of the program and writtens are no longer included in that price. They are $160 each. DPE costs can vary depending on your location, however in Florida you can expect $800 for each and $1200 for CFI initial.
I am in the military. Is it possible to use any GI bill to help fund for flight school here?
Hey dude can you update me on how things have been since graduating? Thanks I really am considering this.
Are you doing your 4 years of college to get your degree and then join the atp program?
Instructed with ATP for about 10 months and now flying corporate.
@@pilot_micah did you do college or go straight to atp from college? Or are you and adult that went into this program?

Joseph Adam Idk about doctor money but
Hello Micah, how hard is the written part? does it requires a lot of math or technical knowledge?
Not exactly, depends on which writtens you’re taking. I think there’s 5 all together. We use Sheppard Air to study for the written tests, makes it really easy. Got like 90+ on all of them.
It's just basic arithmetic. Adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying. There IS significant chart reading and interpretation. It's more theory based questions. I've done the PPL, instrument, and commercial.
Greetings all I just wanted to say something get this off my back I'm a pilot started flying lessons at 15 I'm now 56 I'm captain of triple seven aircraft I was in the military the United States air Force and I had to pay my dues I started off in a md-80 and took me this long to get your man I'm just curious how ATP these inexperienced kids move up really fast maybe I'm not with the times but I personally wouldn't feel safe flying with an experience at all good luck to everyone whatever you do
Why would you continue schooling if you already have your pilot private license? I’m still figuring things out
I have a question I'm trying to learn. so when you leave the school and you graduate will you actually have your commercial pilot licensed for that price $80,000 or so !
I love your hair
Is there even another school that will work with student loans? To me that is one of the biggest draws to ATP....they'll work with Sallie Mae. Is there even any other schools that work with student loan centers? I can't seem to find any around where I live (Lincoln, NE)
I’m sure there is, I’ve only personally had experience with ATP. When I started, they did work with both Sallie Mae and Wells Fargo, but have since changed that. Bigger schools most likely have partnerships with banks to get financing, if its a local flight school than most likely will just have to take out a personal Lon.
So the loan they give u does it go straight to your bank account ..or it’s given to the ATP school ?..
What's the first thing you recommend studying for before flight school
Hey Micah, hope all is well. Wanted to ask, is college education required to get into ATP Flight School? I’ve been working a full time career straight out of Highschool and have considered aviation for some time now. Was going to get my PPL at a mom & pops school, then moving into ATP for my instrumental, etc. let me know if college is necessary!
No from what I’ve read they don’t even some legacy airlines might waive the bachelor requirement
No o e cares about a degree in flight anymore just warm bodies
I'm too broke to go to flight school.
Same here. No way I could afford that.
The bank ain't to broke tho... that's what student loans are for.
@@r4raced4doom2 Watch out for them loans tho, they get a lot of people in debt.
@@colinbosman2099 as long as you see it through to a career it's not any worse than a 4 year degree. And pays for itself many times over. 90k in debt to make 300-400k as a captain 10 years down the road is an easy trade off.

Micah Wade ok thanks for answering
Hi Micah! Truly appreciate all the given information. Quick question, I'm 30 years old and is it a good move to pursue PPL with a loan? Is there any chance that i can build my career afterward?
Dude, you're only 30. No big deal.
If you want something, then go get it.
Dude I’m 30 in like 6 months….go for it, you’ll recoup the money. Just don’t be scared of the payments and the debt numbers when it’s done. It’s a lot and it’s intimidating to think your 200 dollars a months is gonna pay off this massive pile of loans. But be financially responsible and you’ll be ok. You’ll make more in a year or two than you take on for the debt.
Not a pilot. I’m an physical therapy assistant (looking to change careers to pilot or engineer)
But the financial advice is still solid and it’ll keep your credit in good standing and improve it.
Also, 30 isn’t old man you’re gonna be working another 30 years minimum most likely, you might as well have the career you want and a cushy salary….and free plane tickets
ATP Flight school needs $7,000-$10,000 to start ? In our account or cash for everything?
I am looking at going to ATP here in the future. I have my private but have not flown in about 5 years so obviously I am rusty. Would you recommend starting over with the 9 month program, or get refreshed and start with credit for private?
100% get refreshed and start with credit private. No need to spend the extra money
@@pilot_micah Awesome, thanks for the reply.
I heard that they guarantee you a flight instructor job if you get into the program from the Zero experience plan, my concern is, if I were to get my private pilot license and and then join, (which would be the $63k option) would they still provide a flight instructor job when you get your CFI?
They used to guarantee an instructor job regardless of if you starts at zero time or with your private. Unfortunately they no longer do, they could still offer you a job after you completing the program if you were a good student and didn’t have too many failures.
Did you get a job easily afterwards?
I'm 24 looking into getting into being a commercial pilot but I'm not really that great with math nor writing would it still workout with me ?
Took a crash course in college and failed. Need to be proficient in math Chart readings and all kinds of readings.
Woah thats alot of money, i was considering this as a career opportunity but now im not sure with everything i have to pay back, I havent even looked into seeing if i can truly become a commercial pilot with ATP
Regardless of which route you go, flight training is unfortunately very expensive in general. Just have to find what fits best for your situation!
Or if you have the money, part 61 mom and pop is a great way to go. Got all my ratings for under $40k and got paid $65/hr as a instructor
which school did u go to
What school? Can you explain more please.
What did you do for work, while going to atp
wow, prices went up alot!
What is your monthly payment for that loan
Are people able to make this monthly payment? 600 is a lot
i know this is kind of a personal question but what was yours and the co signers credit score when applying? My parents don't have the best scores so I'm not sure if ill get approved.
Definitely interested in this too!
I don't know if you got it figured out but if you can't get the loan for it, there are other options. I started flight training in the middle of October of 2020 so banks stopped approving loans because of Covid. But I was determined and I found an option that worked for me. I just received my commercial license 3 days ago and am now working on my multi-engine add on. If you are determined, there is always a way.
@@tafumii mind if I ask how you figured out financing? I’m thinking about atp but to sign up for a 70k loan is daunting. I’m working on my PPL and can probably get by paying as you go to get my instrument. Can’t afford to do that right away though so I’m gonna need to save up for a couple of months before I start instrument training. But then after instrument, to pay out of pocket for commercial is just a little out of reach.
@@MarcusSkyVentures if you aren't worried about getting the licenses as fast as possible, definitely pay out of pocket for as much as you can. Debt sucks. But remember if your goal is to go to the airlines, seniority is everything, so being quick generally takes more of a priority. You'll make plenty to pay back the loans. I didn't end up going to ATP so I can't speak on this, but you should check with them to see if they even accept students after instrument. Most schools I have seen advertises 0-CPL or Instrument-CPL so that may be the determining factor for you if they don't accept students after instrument.
@@MarcusSkyVentures anyways to answer your actual question haha, There is the loans through their partnered banks. If not those you can go the private loan route. An alternative is find a part 141 school that offers an associates program. It may not be as quick as a 7-9month program but if it's the way to get to your dream, you have to sacrifice. Depending on your age that may not be worth it to you. Or if you already have a degree, most if not all of your credits will transfer and it may not be too much longer than those 7-9 month programs. And because it's part 141 you can apply for student loans to pay for it if it's an accredited college. Be very careful with that. Some schools only allow the student loans to apply to the GenEd classes. I found a 141 school that has a 17month associates program Private to CFII and student loans cover everything except the checkrides. Obviously that would be shorter having your private already. The loans themselves though you can't really avoid unless you or your parents are loaded or you just take longer to get your licenses and pay your way through.
I’m interested in ATP but it’s really expensive. Quick question do major airlines require a degree? If so, this is my plan, I’ll get a degree in computer science and make some money save and then when I’m like 24-26 if I’m still interested being a pilot I’ll go ATP. But that’s if major airlines require a degree. So what do u think? Are there any better options to do this? How is ATP? Sorry if I’m asking a lot but honestly this is gonna base my future and I’m lookin forward to what it takes me to!
Yes, major airlines require a degree. However, they have to be FAA approved, and I'm not sure about computer science
@@senorwilliams3969 oh lmao 😅
No airline requires a college degree more then half the pilots around the world have never stepped in a college all you need is a highschool diploma
I got approved through Sallie Mae but the payment is close to $1200/month really debating that at the moment
G J it’s an investment that’s for sure
have you established any credit at all your interest rate must be very high?
How has the experience and flight training been there so far? I'm really considering going to atp in denver from alaska but I want to make sure I'm getting quality training since I'll be coming back and its very tough flying here. I have my sights set on a local company flying dash 8s called ravn air.

@@pilot_micah Awesome that's good to hear, what will be the next step after training? They say they guarantee a flight instructor job how exactly does that work?

Anyone who has any real experience in the industry would say just avoid ATP. They have no problem dropping students, they couldn’t care less about students, ultra expensive and offer zero flexibility (they own you and your time). They also don’t pay their CFI’s jack sh*t, $18/hr for 100 hours a month is a gigantic pay cut from a regular 160 hours a month at $25/hr. Just go to a regular Part 61 school for say $54k (versus ATP’s $96k+) take a loan from AOPA, get your PPL, IFR, CTP and CFI in 3 months. Become an independent CFI + CFII and MEI, charge $65/hr and you’ll be competitive, in control of your schedule and on a comfortable wage. Plus you’ll be able to build FT a lot faster especially if you do 3 hour blocks 😉
