    Oh my goodness, that is a beautiful quilt top! For $5!!! I just bought a beautiful "Grandmother's Flower Garden" vintage quilt at a thrift store. I paid more for it than any other quilt, but it is in beautiful condition, hand sewn and quilted. (And I am just a beginning quilter, at age 68!)

    Oh my heavens what an absolutely GORGEOUS quilt....you were blessed for sure!! I really loved your quilting tour of this beautiful quilt top and thank you so much for teaching us all these important lessons. I actually have an old leaflet with this pattern and I have been wanting to try making one! So many tiny squares. I do agree with you that squares make a stunning quilt and should not be overlooked in terms of design. Thanks again!

    Reminds me of a quilt that I made with over 900 HST's-when using small units they become like pixels and you can create just about anything with them! So cool!

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  3 года назад

      Whoa! 900 HSTs? That's a lot of work! That's true! I didn't think about them as pixels before.

    Oh my goodness, what a fantastic find, $5 would be roughly £3.50 here. I adore pointed square and diamond quilts and have long been thinking about attempting this. I made a pointed square curtain for my Granddaughters play house and was getting confused lol, the 4 square 🤔 mmmmm I will have to look again at the quilt top, it's super so I don't mind mulling over it for a while to see if that would be easier for me. Thanks for sharing, wold love to see how you finish this and great advice about measuring 💖

      There are a few tutorials out there for making this in an easier way. I think Jordan Fabrics has one out there. They are a lot of fun to make! I made one years ago for a charity sew event and really enjoyed the process. Thanks, as always, for watching! I hope you are doing well!

    Kris, I like how you isolate blocks for us. Nancy Zieman was one of the few instructors who did this.

      @SewtheDistance  3 года назад +2

      Nancy Zieman--I miss her! She was an inspiration. I didn't realize it until I read you comment, but that must be where I learned to do it. I just think it helps makers understand the construction, especially if you are a new maker. Thank you for your kind words!

    Beautiful quilt! I agree that it would be fun to just work with squares. I'd probably make 9-patches and keep my chart handy for color placement! Important lesson about borders. Thanks for sharing!

      I think there is a "hack" that Jordan Fabrics did with strip piecing. Thanks for watching! Sorry I have been MIA--the puppy is consuming a lot of my time! I am just now feeling like I can breathe a little.

      it is a fun pattern to make. I made one many years ago for a charity sew-along. I think Jordan Fabrics has a great tutorial on this pattern, making it with strips instead of squares.

    I hope that you will show us the quilt once you have finished it. I agree that it needs new border fabric.
    I have a flimsy made of squares from mostly scrap fabric. The back of the quilt - the after-quilt according to Karen Brown - was completed with strips of scrap fabric. I ordered some batting for this quilt and another one but it us on backorder.

    Another beautiful quilt top! I would definitely remove that border and replace with a stable fabric. I would guess someone added that border years later and did not "know" what they were doing. Great find for only $5!

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  3 года назад

      Yes! I plan to do just that. It would have been a different person who added them. Great point.

      I found a "flimsy" in a version of postage stamp. It had this exact border (color and fabric) with the same issues. I did find a similar color and fabric weave at JoANN Fabric. I bought their Classic solid because the weave more closely matched the original. The pricier solids were too high a thread count and would not be suitable for hand stitching and wear. I don't remember how much I paid but I don't normally spend more than 25$. The "madam x " pattern was worth it but the border was way worse than this one. A "mother daughter type thing , I imagine

    Also, could that border been put on later by someone else? Such care was taken in piecing the blocks and the border looks like it was just slapped on.

    I also have a top in the Madam X or Steps to the Altar pattern with a thin border in the exact same green ! It was def put on by someone else. It's machine hand strips wonky and on the backside excess fabric stitched down and trimmed w pinking shears . You gotta love the effort but explains why not finished ! It's on my pile waiting for the u sewing to begin . Fabric already set aside for new border. This is what is termed a mother daughter quilt . Usually caused by the death of the maker and a relative wanting to honor it .

    I had to revisit this . I've a similar top that's unfinished. The top was finished in order to make a rectangle . The bottom was not . I've gone thru my salvaged antique fabs to find those of compatible color an Density of fabric. Not that easy as mine needs a maroon print ( that bleeds when heated ) I did find an apron in the desired color way / print but hesitate to cut up a vintage apron . If I leave as is and just border it would still make a full/ queen quilt . I'm not getting younger . Any suggestions? .

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  2 года назад

      Hmmm. I would cut up the apron, to be honest. Aprons are pretty easy to come by, at least around here, and they usually aren't terribly expensive, unlike the price of vintage quilts, yardage, and even scraps. Vintage aprons are my "sneaky" way of collecting vintage fabric without the higher cost. Your other option would be to purchase something compatible on Etsy, but the cost may not be worth it. You could also scan local thrift shops for vintage cotton clothing or even use men's shirts. Just some ideas. I hope they help!

    • @annettegraff8323
      @annettegraff8323 2 года назад

      @@SewtheDistance I think I will use the apron. Originally got the aprons for just that purpose but I need to downsize more 🤣 The yardage / scraps almost unobtainable now ! The original maker of this one sewed each square piece by piece in an African American style that I find attractive. The colors and substitutions are very intuitive in my opinion . Thank you very much for the feedback .

    If you purchased this beauty at an estate sale, there is a good chance you could find out the name of the maker. If you plan on finishing the quilt, it would be a wonderful thing to include her name on the label.❤

      Completely agree! Great tips! I usually ask at the estate sale, yard sale, auction, etc. and actually try to talk the seller into keeping the quilt(s). I always document them. I have over 100 antique and vintage quilts in my collection now. ❤️

    Kris can you please help (or anyone else really) I'm hand sewing a 4" block quilt. I got all my sets of 4 sewn together and then my sets of 8 sewn together, then I noticed a problem. Some of my knots didn't hold and I've had to go back through all my seams and strengthen them. How do I solve this problem if I hand sew another..? I don't want to have knots the size of pennies lol, but ya...that's my issue. Help

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  3 года назад +1

      Oh boy. I’m not sure if know! I hope sometime on here does. Let me ask around about this. I don’t really hand piece much. My guess is you can just reenforce the seams with more stitches but I’m not positive. Can anyone help Darlene?

    • @annettegraff8323
      @annettegraff8323 2 года назад +1

      My grandma didn't use knots . She took a backstitch directly over the first stitch . Make the m tiny and tug gently after you make the stitch . At the end of the seam do the same. Some of my flimseys needed seam repairs and the stitches like this are very very hard to remove ! Just be sure to make your stitches as even as you can . Ps She wiggled the fabric onto the needle and after pulling the needle thru linded the needle up with prior stitches. Try it No quilt police and finished is good !

      I also have a 4 patch top 2 inch square's with this powder puff print. I managed to find enough yardage in this print to repair some bias 1/2 squares on the edge that were frayed. Soo fun to work and play with these oldies!
