Chess Openings: Grunfeld Defense

- The Grunfeld Defense is one of the most popular chess defenses against the d4 opening from white. Black looks to play a hypermodern defense by allowing white to control the center of the board and counterattack the center with this minor pieces. White much be careful and defend properly or his center control will vanish. White also has the option to decline and continue with a more aggressive line.

'I don't play like Kasparov, he's a little better than I am.'
LOL!
Kasparov is a little better than I am. Lmao
APGKin just a little
Just little better i think more
Lmao
John 15:10
Nah i don’t think so he’s a bit overrated i think you got him
"Fischer, with the black pieces - a minor disadvantage - quickly gained equality with one of his favourite openings, the Grünfeld Defence, and, as is common in the Grünfeld, sniped away at white’s centre". (from "Bobby Fischer Goes to War" by David Edmonds, John Eidinow)
The GOAT!
Your videos have honestly gotten me back into chess. Every chess book I have that I didn't read or half-know the moves you elucidate better than any text could, and also go through each variant.
In my mind I always think "but what if this was played instead," and you answer that, multiple ways.
Are you still into chess?
Did you quiet chess shortly after this comment?
Great video and explanations. Very clear. Just watched Kasparov-Prisbyl game and this Grunfeld explanation gives me a lot more insight into the play. Keep it up!
Matthew 7:21
yep your totally right PeterRoeder31, Nf3 is a book move and is fine to play, and the book move after would be pawn to c5.
A pleasure as always to watch your videos. Would like to see more content uploaded from you. Thanks.
What should I be trying to do if they advance the pawn to C5 on move 3 ?
Very helpful. Thank you!
Thanks! One of the most clear explanation for the Grunfeld I've seen. Using to be aggressve and don't knowing a few minutes ago with the Russian variation, it helped a lot. 1000 times thanks!
ok
"I don't play like Kasparov. He's a little better than I am."
LOL. You're too modest. ;-)
@chandygarcia Dunno. There are a few that I like. I'm just a mid-1600's player, so I'm not that up with strategies and what not. I just don't like giving up center control of the board. Grunfeld has never worked for me. I usually answer a d4 opening with d5 right away. It seems to work for Anand, and who am I to argue with that? LOL
What should I do (as a black) if in position at 7:47 white plays Qa4+?
If we exchange queens, then he's better by the pawn I can't capture anymore.
If I play something different, I lose the queen.
It's a lose-lose situation! (or am I missing something?)
"i think kasparov is a little better" haha :)
what other openings/variations are there after g6
LOL kasparov a little better then i am? are you for real! i love most of your videos and you're the go to for me the last couple years of going on and off chess, to learn openings, really helpful video still 7 years / 8 years ago.
Another thing you will see from white instead of 3 Nc3 is f3. mainline i think was then ... d5. cxd5- Nxd5 - e4. Nb6
Hello, and tx for ur non-dry and non-boring trainings.
7:38 should black play 1...c6 instead, will it strengthen his position?
Another great video!
came here bcz of the popularity among the grandmasters, this video is very instructive bro keep it up
Happy new Yearrrr lol Question: Which chess program do you use?
Isnt it better to fianchetto your bishop at 4:31?
To bad you don't explain an early c5 from black (before castle). Usually the main point in this opening is (if no one blunders) white gets an isolated passed d-pawn. If black can win that pawn he wins the game if not white wins.
Isn't the C5 black pawn hanging for awhile? Why wouldn't white just take it earlier?
4:23 what if white plays 1.d5 ?
love the casual intonation of the comments.. gj
also after Qxc5 white has to retreat the bishop
Sweet video, thanks!
Awesome videos keep up the good work! ♟
thanks
I think grunfeld is not a very dangerous opening to play with black,it does not remind something like sicilian, cuz white can easily draw the game, there is theory in grunfeld that draws for white..So if you wanna win,you dont play grunfeld, except if your openent is not high level(i mean 2200 and down)or if you want to surprise him..My oppinion is that if you want to win, best oppenings are the Tarrasch, the Kings Indian ,Slav defence and Benoni.
nb5 doesn't really do much. black responds knight a6developing a piece, and white knight will be kicked back with a6 or c6 losing vital tempo
at 3:00 you say that the bishop would just be too much pressure, but I don't see how the bishop is of any real use there because white afaik can just push it away. pawn to h3, and bishop has to move. I suppose they could just take your knight, leaving you with a pawn sticking out. Is that a good move for black to take?
Yes bishop should take the knight because knight is a defender of the center, and black would get more pressure at it
3:10 so if i play Bg4 pinning the knight, can't white just play h3? What would I do then?
I would think that I should take the knight cuz retreating the bishops just loses tempo.
YourName_TV Exactly. Especially if you already have a pawn on g6...
its still the gruenfeld defence. If youre thinking ( Nf6... c4) that is called the indian game.
when black moves his pawn up to c5, why doesnt white just take it, aside from a potential queen exchange?
Because than White can't castle anymore and Black still can, giving Black a slight advantage in King Safety and Development. Not good for White.
Thanx for the video
actually bishop to g4 pinning knight is a mistake. (at 3:09)
Seems like a lot of Bg4 pins on f3 are not so good for Black in certain openings.
Grunfeld gambit is ok ... polgar played it and many other top GMs played it. black should have a good compensation for the gambit . after 8... Bxc7 , Na6 . black should do ok .
you can go chess games and see some games played out with that gambit .
1.d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. d5..! IF 1.d4 Nf6 2. d5 can again be played And if 1.d4 d5 then 2.c4 and if g6 or Nf6 now then c x d5. IF Nxd5 then e4..!! attacking the knight with tempo. In fact, many players still fianchetto and castle on the king's side but the H pawn thrust and if blocked G thrust are just 2 powerful. White king in the center or queen side, trading black's fianchetto bishop and even sacrificing pieces gives white a good adv. and even mating threats in the mid game.
Now I know the Grunfeld! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it.
Intro to the Gruenfeld.
Kasparov actually abandoned this opening, because black is loosing the battle in the center.
He said that he believes that Grunfeld was an in-correct opening, and he could hardly measure him-self playing Grunfeld regularly against Karpov in a World Championship match.
Hello good sir! Thank you for posting this video, and for you concise explanation of the Grunfeld. If I may, I wish to challenge you to further explain how White is BETTER in the "Grunfeld Gambit" line. After 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Bf4 Bg7 5.e3 0-0!? 6.cxd5 Nxd5 7.Nxd5 Qxd5 8.Bxc7 Na6! Black is way ahead in development after a move like 9.Bg3 Bf5 followed by...Rac8 when ALL of Black's pieces are developed and White's King is still stuck in the center! So, how is White better here? ;-)
Oh that’s good
Its been 12 years since your comment. What did you find out? lol
At 7:50 .. can't white just go a3. Forcing the queen to retreat?
is there a line in the grunfeld were you sacrafice your pawn can you tell me the video
You need to take membership of chess.com so you can analyse things (but we like free things so no need)
@BadukOD he is not jrobi
I remember someone played this on me once, the lines look sort of the same. Well thanks this is a defense that i can use because it looks like the King's Indian Defense
Ok
@@jotarokujo3870 ok
ok!
Great Video! I checked out the website i liked it alot
A player named Grunfeld first analyzed it.
I was wondering, at 4:20 white could capture the black pawn at c5 with the pawn ad d4. Would that be a bad move?
Yes that's a bad move. White loses the strong centre
That video helped me a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't like Petrosian system. White goes to Carlsbad pawn structure...
@Olliek94 I actually wondered the same thing and thus put the position into my engine. The recommended answer to dxc5 seems to be Nd7, attacking the pawn on c5 which can only be physically defended by Ba3 after which Qa5 attacks c5 a second time and also attacks the unprotected bishop on a3. So long story short, white seems to be unable to keep his pawn and may also slip into a worse position by delaying his castle. I hope this was helpful.
@eeeeeriickkkkk 7. Bc4, c4 ???
What if white takes the knight on d5 with his knight?
queen takes
and black is probably equal
What if I am playing against someone who will go for any bait I throw at him?
Then reel them in. (Going along with the metaphor
Play a gambit
Take advantage of it?
Jenius
Is defending with e3 fine after g6?
What did you find out?
I will try this...Grunfeld Defense looks so elegant.
i love your vids but this one didn't help me as much as the others thx!
after seeing Hikaru's tier I wanted to check out how legendary this opening was.
Have you tried it out?
@@Kreamations I can't nobody plays that moves in 700s
@@keijhannajhiek1907 . Its been a year since your comment. You still playing chess in the nosebleeds? lol
@@MrSupernova111 yeah i still do especially crazy openings or endgames.
@@keijhannajhiek1907 . haha. In all seriousness, good luck with your chess and keep at it. Cheers!
I went to lookup and review this defense after watching Hikaru say that most people shouldn't use this opening (it was in a sub-2000 setting with bullet.)
Man, I loved these chess videos, I remember watching this series many years back. Thanks for creating some of the (eventual) stepping stones for modern Twitch chess community. ;)
Who else doesn't know how to type the ü in Grunfeld Defense
Is c5 not hanging in the mainline Grunfeld?
+Corey506 no
+Corey506 No because
1) The isolated doubled c-pawns are a huge weakness and
2) Blacks dark square bishop becomes even stronger
3) Qa5 wins it back immediately
I always appreciate his explanations, I think he was a little stoned this time though.
haha. I laughed pretty hard at this.
at 6:14 why cant black just go nb5
i could beat kasporov just take away his pawns knights bishops rooks and the queen he would be a goner
What is this White Opening called?
Queen's gambit declined
@altay8
lol, modesty despite truth
2:57 - 2:59 was really funny..!
Which opening is white playing ?
Queen's Gambit
ehm... studies :p
Try doing this video again but you are not allowed to say "from here". :>)
I like this opening when I'm white! XD it gives me a boost of confidence and then I play better with confidence
Russian system is my favourite against Gruenfeld
Lee Enfield
u are amazing :) thanks for the videos u have been making and keep the good work :P
Karpov beat Kasparov in grunfeld defence.
"I don't play like Kasparov. He's a little better than I am."
(My thoughts: Did he just say Kasparov? Rewind. Did he REALLY say Kasparov? Then read the comments.)
Nevertheless that was very entertaining and jolted me out of my stupor.
JRobi is da best!
I am only watching this for my Saturday classes
I'm here in 2021
I'm not a big fan of Grunfeld's defense. There are too many things white can to do mess with it.
Im here in 2024
very low quality analysis and lots of lies....have you even got FM oder at least 2000 ELO?!
I must say, as brilliant as the advice is, you sound a little tipsy.
You're not even teaching an opening. You're making up some hypothetical game where black has these perfect moves that fit u miraculously.
