Chess Openings: The Pirc Defense

  • In the Pirc Defense, black tries to defend the center with this minor pieces. This chess strategy is considered a hypermodern opening. After fianchettoeing his bishop to g7, black looks to control the dark squares in the middle while still allowing his light square bishop a great diagonal to develop. If black is not careful white can put lots of pressure on the kingside of black, limiting the development of black's pieces. Black must counterattack to put up a fight.

    @AlltimeTrance I know I'm super late on this post, but just in case you're still wondering. You don't usually play either unless White goes for an early exhange and sacrifices his center, allowing you to recover it with e5. However, there is an Austrian Attack variation where you play c5 instead of Nc6, but it transitions the game into a Dragon Sicilian position.

  • @sandipand

    I usually take the knight because I am more comfortable playing with a knight pair than a bishop pair - a bishop pair has great advantages because the bishop's reach is much more, but the good thing about pair is that they can defend each other if left alone - in the endgame it is very useful as you dont have to worry about your knights being harassed by the opponent and comfortable make rook and queen moves :):)

    Bh5 still pinning down the knight, and if white goes for g4 his king side is very weak and unprotected. Also black can then do something like Nxg4 and when hxg4 then Bxg4 and the pin continues and the knight sacrificed for leaving a very exposed king with no pawns protecting it. If white does not capture the knight then black can move it and the pin is back in effect

    First, it's not pronounced "Perk", it's pronounced "Peertz". The opening is named after Vasja Pirc.
    Second, 5. ... O-O is considered dead for a long time now, since if Black decides to castle this early, then, 6. e5 Nfd7 7. h4 c5 8. h5 cxd4 9. Qxd4 Nc6 10. Qf2 dxe5 11. hxg6 hxg6 and 12. Qh4 is curtains for Black. The correct response, in case you're wondering, is 5. ... c5, directly undermining White's center. The follow-through for the most common response from White is to take the c5 pawn with 6. dxc5 Qa5 7. Bd3 Qxc5 8. Qe2 O-O 8. Be3 and then 8. ... Qa5 or 8. ... Qb4, depending on your level of aggressiveness.
    Also, Black never makes captures that blocks the a1-h8 diagonal in this opening (like demonstrated here): what's the point of a fianchettoed Bishop on the main diagonal if you're purposefully blocking it?

    I'm a beginner, but why does he move bishop to g4 when white could just do h3 after? Even if bishop takes f3, white recaptures with bishop. Wouldn't that be better for white anyway? Because his bishop would be now covering even more of the center?

    • @dauntless0711
      @dauntless0711 6 лет назад

      Another beginner here, and I think you are right in terms of the opening. The trouble is when you look at the position in terms of the overall strategic position. White will forever weaken his King-side defense for the immediate benefit of having a bishop on a marginally better square. This isn't too problematic for Black, since he will be in no immediate danger because of it. The pawn on h3 becomes a weakness, as it is now only protected by another pawn, vs before when it was protected by the King and a Knight. If the g2 pawn can be pinned to the King at any point, the h3 pawn will be in danger of being captured, and the path to White's King will be opened.

If white doesn't blindly just give away that bishop by moving it under a threatened square by the nb6 knight any reasonable move gives his side way too much positional compensation. At least under best play. Remember, when your opponent doen't make the best move your automatic response shouldn't be to reciprocate in kind. You need to punish him mercilessly for it! THINK!

    Noobie question here, but at 5:05, after knight to c6, wouldn't white just attack it with pawn to d5?

    • @pokerrisker5135
      @pokerrisker5135 5 лет назад +1

      Because it's obvious that then black would push its knight while the black also has castled. Black would then create pressure with his knight and resist any mainline strategies from white

    I really need help with something if anyone with a decent ELO can help!!!! At 5:06 when black moves Nc6, in the games I play (my rating isn't phenomenal obviously) more often than not white would then make a move like pawn d4 to d5 threatening my knight immediately after development. How do you play well against such moves, or take advantage if they are considered mistakes? Nc6 to b4 doesnt even work because then they play a3 immediately. I HATE these players!~!!! How do I combat that style?

    Pronounced wrong. You pronounce it as Peerts/Pirts defense. Not perk.

    Exchange your Bishop for the white Knight, and then the black Knight on c6 wins a free pawn on d4, also attacking the queen, gaining a margin of center control

    Statistically the Sicilian and the Pirc give Black about equal chances but everyone has studied how the Sicilian works as both white and black...not everyone has studied the Pirc so that may give a black player a psychological edge.
