    I think the reason people, myself included, don’t know what “Kiting” is that its base description sounds too similar to “Flex”: weapons that are able to play offensively and defensively/support and switch back to back with ease. N-ZAP 85 is a great example, able to harass enemies with its mobility and power, while also able to weave back to allies with Tacticooler. Both Sloshing Machine sets are also examples; the Vanilla set can sit back with Fizzy and chuck Booyah Bombs, but also threaten opponents with the main weapon’s AOE, in relatively close quarters. The Neo set is more passive with Point Sensor, but Trizooka gives it more range and more kill power. That’s why almost every Splatoon player uses “Flex” or “Aggro-Support” as the term and not “Kiting.” The name being a bit ambiguous probably doesn’t help that much, either.

    I think most people call what you call “kiting” skirmishers. People tend to describe as weapons that can start fights but not die. These include brushes and dualies that can use their agility to start fights and avoid dangerous situations, or brellas that can use their canopy to tank attacks, or explosher, dynamo, tri stringer, and wellspring that can use their aoe to hit from weird angles so that the enemy can’t fire back. I’m pretty sure people compared explo because they have a similar role: a midline that uses their aoe harass opponents. But differences are that explosher has better aoe , paint, and a wall to tank but has less mobility and more down time, while stringers has less aoe but has a one shot, more mobility, less down time, and insane object damage. Stringers are also in a weird sub category of weapons called pseudo back lines which are weapons that has the range to be a back line , but doesn’t need to commit to being a back line , allowing it to be a lot more aggressive such as Splatoon 1 custom jet squelcher, douser dualies, explosher, and stringers. People who never played stringers might get confused and think stringers are anchors because it has the range but it’s not.

    I think the word you're looking for is Skirmisher, a playstyle focused on not dying while the actually good weapons (read slayers) come in and clean up your 1v2s, the maps in this game and how all these weapons play simply arn't made for kiting in the traditional sense (which is running away from an enemy to remain out of their range whilst taking pot shots)

      @@ItsToadTime_Wiiu Generally skirmishers are weapons which purpose is to start fights and keep the enemy busy. Skirmisher weapons tend to not get kills as easily and there are generally 2 types of skirmishers: 1. Mobility focused short-mid range skirmishers like tetra's and wipers and 2. Weapons that can safely poke the enemy due to their higher range and deal damage to enemies, which teammates can combo off.
      I have never played flingza so I don't know how it plays. The range blaster is a slayer weapon as it is better at finishing fights than it is in starting them (Comboes well off damage from other weapons/bombs/specials and has a 1 hit). It can be used for skirmishing, but has a slow firing speed and poor mobility. It does have decent range, but not great enough to poke enemies safely as you're playing at around mid range constantly.
      Generally though you don't want to get too caught up in these specific roles. Every weapon that's more focused on skirmishing also does slaying from time to time. Truth to be told every frontline/midline weapons does both to some degree.

    as somebody that mains exclusively stringers, while I do feel it can kite fairly well, I feel that title is closer to that of a skirmisher, which, while I believe all of the stringers are capable of skirmishing well, only reeflux truly specializes at it, I would say the main element that all of the stringers share is being supportive, as they have amazing combo numbers, crazy paint output, and kits that allow them to be enable their team. While I do see the vision, I dont know if kite is the most accurate word for it, that brings to mind weapons like dualie squelcher, sliding away and keeping just out of reach, while I believe all the stringers can do this, I dont necessarily think that is their specialty. That said, I do appreciate the attention to the flexibility of the weapon class, I feel that stringers are one of the most expressive weapon classes in the game, being able to do just about any job well and so oftentimes succeeding with it is just figuring out which task to do first. Honestly the only way to use a stringer wrong is to only use one of its many modes
    While stringers are dynamic, I feel how I would generally categorize them is:
    Reeflux specializes at skirmishing, but it also has good paint which allows it to play well when supporting as well, since it wants to get a lot of eyes on itself and then refuse to die thanks to its mobility
    Tri-Stringer is very supportive, being very good at supporting its teammates with AoE to prevent targets from moving as well as being able to deal up to 90 damage if they cant get away, alongside having very good paint, that and due to it having charger range, it is very comfortable in the backline, that said, it can also very reliably play with it's team at midline and use primarily its AoE, I would describe its positioning as most similar to that of a jet squelcher
    Wellstring is very interesting in that, while it's more comfortable defending itself than a Tri-Stringer, it is also very slow, meaning it often is well suited to anchor while also actually wanting to play more like a midline, I would say it generally does best playing like an explo in opening but moving into more aggressive positions as its team gets momentum. Wellstring usually shouldnt be the furthest forward, generally I like playing it near weapons like stamper or blaster and creating a wall so that they cant actually fight either of us without instantly exploding. While I think its oneshot is good, that's usually more of a back-up plan than anything, since if you get caught in a 1-2 you dont even really get a chance to escape and so you just kinda *die* since it doesnt really have the movement to reliably do much in those situations

    In defense of custom wellstring, the reason that its seeing a lot more usage in competitive play is definitely more than JUUUST the location spam aspect of it.
    While yes, having a huge amount of location is one of the parts custom wellstring does well in comp, one other reason it sees more usage is because wavebreaker doesn't take away the main weapon. Currently, comp is running more on zones only, and vanilla wellstring is a lot worse on this mode with stamp as it trades out the main weapon for a special that's incredibly easy to counter if you are a shooter, splatling, dualie or another explosion based stringer, which makes it much harder to use in that mode. Meanwhile, custom wellstring doesn't lose out on zones since wavebreaker doesn't take away your main in the first place, which allows you to keep up a lot more pressure and painting at a longer distance on Wellstring. This is also proven more true with what wellstring is mainly used as a semi-counter to, being vanilla squeezer and other wall weapons. Most of the splash wall weapons in comp currently are able to shoot through ultra stamp incredibly easily, meaning you'd be losing out on wellstring's high object damage at farther ranges for a special that is easily countered by the weapons it WANTS to counter. With the custom kit, however, you aren't taken from your main to use your special, meaning you can keep countering these weapons at a distance, helping to ease up matchups for your teammates against prominent splash wall weapons. This, on top of location being super helpful for both wellstring as an AoE weapon and with supporting your teammates, is what has custom wellstring over the vanilla wellstring in competitive play.

    • @Wince_SC
      @Wince_SC  2 месяца назад +2

      Oh yeah, I didn't think about being able to use the main weapon and special at the same time. Along with the ability to counter wall weapons.

    neat video! you've activated my special interest and i'm gonna take a minute to selfishly rant about stringers cause wow i have so many hours put into the stringer class and so many thoughts about them:
    1) no stringers have white-ink frames outside of their sub weapons. every stringer is incredibly ink efficient and easy to ink manage if you swim between shots. you can throw a subweapon and after charging 1 shot (maybe 2 on reeflux) you'll be able to swim to recover ink again. i run 2 subs to 1 main of ink recovery on every kit if i'm not running LDE
    2) tri-stringer is like charger with great ink efficiency and high mobility that can ignore cover without wallbanging. that's insane to me
    3) custom wellstring's detection works as support, but if your team gains advantage on a stage where the enemy's plat is a raised ledge, marking them makes confirming kills from safely below their ledge much easier- less time spent flaring the map to get an idea of where to group your explosive shots. SIDENOTE: i firmly believe this is the same concept for Dread Wringer D, another high paint output weapon with a detection sub and special (beakons reveal enemies on the map) that can completely ignore cover in a very threatening way
    4) my dream wellstring kit is ink mine + big bubbler. my thought is you can bait aggressive weapons into your inkmines and finish them off with a single tap-shot instead of 2-3. and a big bubbler???? before i had to harass backlines from under their ledge or by arcing behind cover, but now i can become a huge problem for them anywhere on the map whenever i have special? AND my ink tank refills, meaning i can place a mine to prepare for someone entering my bubbler???? no one has to understand my vision, i would just be over the moon if this kit was real

      I agree, but I do feel like most weapons lean more into one role than another. That being said, something which confused me when I first started playing stamper was that people said it was a mid-line slayer. Now I get why, but when I first started out I found it was also great at skirmishing too because of it's long range and various options to deal chip damage. Then when I found out it was called a mid-line slayer, I stopped skirmishing altogether for a while because I thought that it was the wrong way to play the weapon. Just an example of how thinking roles are static can limit your improvement.

      @@Thomas48484 Most weapon definitely lean more than another. Of course, you don't expect a squeezer to either paint or be in the frontline since it's NORMALLY not built for that; but push comes to shove, the squeezer needs to do so in the situation that other members of the team are either too busy engaging or already dead; like, if your Neo-splash is actually launching their Inkstrike at the moment, you engage play more aggressively defensive to make sure either your Neo-splash doesn't die while still using a very vulnerable special and your enemies cannot occupy your Neo-splash's and your space as well.

    I swear its much more to do with manipulating/lureing enemies rather than being flexible in your own role/range.
    Think tetras rolling onto an enemy team's flank to draw players away from their own team.
    Maybe u could argue reflux does this with curling and ridiculous tapshot frame data but the other stringers are nowhere near mobile enough/have too much downtime to be in consistent danger.
    Every weapon with range can kite if the enemy is pushing but saying its a role/playstyle is an exaggeration unless referring to tetras, inkbrush...etc where their primary purpose in a comp is to draw attention.

      The definition of kiting comes from a few different PVP communities I'm in.
      Normally our kiting weapons have 2-16 shot projectiles with a fair bit of range and movement speed, but we normally break up kiting into 4 (was 6) different playstyles, separate from an anchor (sniper / alpha damager)
      However within Splatoon the role / playstyle of kiting is different.

    It was more that people didn't know what kiting is, but also that, the class definitely still favors being an anchor more than it does being always on the move. Yes you have a very deadly area of effect, yes you have a lot of range, you paint a lot, you can be mobile, but the best spaces you can take advantage of, are typically from the backline. Challenging people behind walls safely, denying space and allowing others to combo off your icicle explosions.
    Reeflux definitely has its case, it's already incredibly mobile, almost comparable to the shooter class in how fast it can move and paint, but the other two don't exactly have that kinda luxury. The AoE spam is definitely disappointing, but I feel like it's just a result of the bows naturally being more defensively capable, than they are of offense. That's just my take on the matter though. I think you're right, but the class as a whole just isn't there yet.

      I think the definition of 'kite' in this video is what people call a 'skirmisher', and the above reply explains the downsides pretty good, i think. Ive heard thar skirmishers play to distract the enemy from their objective, approaching them from angles they dont to deal with or using some other element to make it harder to do what theyre doing. Its vague, but weapons ive been told are skirmishers include tetras, wiper, splat & undercover brella, etc. The downside of weapons like this is usually downtime or a slow firerate. It was explained in this video you attack a stringer right after it fired the projectiles because it has to charge again, yeah? The same sort of idea. It takes skirmishers longer to get things done because they either have a slow attack speed or lower damage.
      Kiting weapons are a bit different, from what i understand. Their goal is to abuse their range and stay on their toes to deal damage over time to people that cant reach them. Ive been told dualie squelchers fit the bill, and i can assume stuff like longer ranged blasters fit a similar demand.
      thats. all i think i know?? hope this was sort of helpful, even if i couldnt compare to other games.

I saw this weapon and was like there's no way im not maining it and after a bit of trial and error it was easy to figure that tou have to shift back and fourth from backline to midline (tri stringer specifically) which was part of the kit I came to like quite a bit. It lets me be the backline when needed and stay safe but if we already have a charger or something i can easily adapt my range to fit a midline roll. At the same time you can fish for kills or be a zoner with those explosive arrows which is always fun to play a game and have the enemy on their toes guessing what your next move is when the range, intensity, and utility can change at a moment's notice.

I got four stars on it yesterday, and I described the way I play it to my friends as an "aggressive support," though I do hang back a little when I play ranked. Stringer is one of my favorite classes, so I'm happy to see a video on it. But to my understanding, kiting is when you abuse your range to get the advantage--not what you described.
    The reason why I prefer Custom over Vanilla is because of Ultra Stamp. It's a good "get off me" tool, but it disables the use of your main weapon and leaves you vulnerable. I prefer it with other weapons. Wave Breaker also combos very well with the Wellspring, since the chip damage from both the Wave Breaker and the explosive shots add up. Wave Breaker's main problem is its low HP, so it can very easily be shredded in higher level play.

    This video, while I don't necessarily disagree with a lot of what you have to say, really feels like you just don't know a lot about analysis of splatoon's design and mechanics and the terminology people generally use to refer to it. I don't think your definition of kiting is that different from how people use it in the splatoon community, but I think your idea of what it is feels different. The weapons most associated with the term kiting in Splatoon are usually the Dualie Squelchers and Splatana Wiper, and they do exactly what you said there of weave in and out of enemy lines, but it's usually also associated with outranging shorter range options (mainly short range shooters). Because of this, Kiting is usually a term associated with the role of "Skirmishing" which is basically just making yourself enough of a problem for the enemy team that it gives your other members openings. But I don't think that any of the stringers, aside from maybe Reeflux fill that role well. While they do have mobility, it's usually not anywhere near enough to safely engage players with. SOmething like a Wiper can stay alive fighting for a good 20 seconds if you know how to use its movement well, but if you're a stringer in enemy lines you either have to hit your shots and kill everyone, or you'll get targeted and not have the survivability to stay there long. With how I see you using stringers in gameplay more, they absolutely fit with what anchor weapons usually do in Splatoon. Using Snipewriter as an example, its reputation is as a paintbot but the main reason it's actually good in high level play is because it has insane offensive capabilities, especially when paired with good fighting weapons. As a snipewriter, you should be using your good run speed and abundance of paint to swim in to get into enemy lines and use that to get kills, or dropping off of your safe high ground to take 1v1s in certain cases. Nothing about how you were using Kiting in this video contradicts with how most anchor weapons play in Splatoon, and it really just gives me the feeling that this is a video created by someone who largely exists away from the people who generally analyze the game, and makes it more confusing to follow.

      @@Wince_SCCrab meta was slow because the Splashes would have to swap from front to back mid-fight. The combination of a weapon with backline range that can just pop a Crab and not have to move makes the special have more immediate impact in a faster metagame. Saying that it's situational is turning a blind eye as to why the devs are too scared to give Crab to any backline.

  • @crashur3600

    Look at me, dude. REEF-LUX needs a get-off-me-tool like Splat Bomb. The devs were too afraid to give the Stringers amazing kits like they did for the Splatanas. We can't entertain the idea of another sub-par kit. However, with its recent buff removing REEF-LUX's mid-air charge penalty, I think Burst Bomb and Zipcaster would be amazing on REEF-LUX. I get that it has a 1 shot, but so does Stamper, and it still uses it's Burst. Also, the main weapon is still pretty different from Squiffer.

      Reeflux with an actual aggro special and not just a "press R to cheese zone and die" button sounds amazing, I've wanted Kraken for a while but Zip sounds like a lot of fun too. As for the bomb, Splat bomb is one option, but I actually like suction bomb more, personally.

    • @crashur3600
      @crashur3600 2 месяца назад

      @@MeloniestNeon I was thinking Burst Bomb because if you miss your 1 of your shots, it can be a good follow-up. It doesn't have as much range as Squiffer, so if it misses, it can't really charge before you're within range of the opposition. I mean a Splattershot can close that distance almost immediately, especially with Cooler. If you miss the whole shot, you can also just throw a Burst Bomb to threaten and keep your enemies weak. With a Burst direct, you only need like 2 tap shots.

  • @katsoupman3218
    @katsoupman3218 2 месяца назад

    So a couple of things
    I’ve seen in a couple other comments that your definition of kiting gets pretty muddy with skirmisher and that there weren’t many examples provided on what that playstyle is, which honestly I don’t blame you because all these roles and shit are pretty abstract to begin with
    I will say stating strictly that all stringers are purely kiting weapons is contrary to how fluid roles are in this game. Most other games have very set in stone roles of slayer/tank/support and whatnot, but the Splatoon devs just kinda made whatever they thought would be cool with not much thought put into how easy it slots into team comps, which is pretty based honestly. That being said, why should every stringer only be a kiting weapon? Why should every weapon in this class have the same playstyle? What reason do they have to exist if they all play the same role?
    You kinda mention that you’re somewhat disappointed with the comp scene for taking an interest with cwell recently for its location kit, because you believe it to be a kiting weapon and people are playing it more as a backline. Honestly I think the fact it can have a completely different playstyle between the two kits despite being the same weapon only speaks to how flexible the weapon itself is and is entirely a good thing. It just means that despite being the same weapon, the two kits play entirely different roles! It’s still entirely fair to be disappointed or uninterested in any given kit, I’m not saying you SHOULDN’T be disappointed, that’s still your opinion at the end of the day, but I’d challenge you to recognize that most weapons are inherently fluid and don’t cleanly fit into a solidified role, as I, admittedly, get the impression from is what you think in this video
    That’s not to say I disagree with everything, I’ve never really thought about stringers as kiting weapons before and can absolutely understand your point and agree! But only to an extent, as I don’t agree with your explanation all the way and don’t agree with how rigid it seems your answer is. You say ALL stringers are ALL kiting weapons, PERIOD, when they’ve proven to be effective “fake backlines,” short range slayer/support weapons, true backlines with mobility similar to ballpoint in S2 but with aoe support. The playstyles stringers offer are diverse, as are all classes in Splatoon (except arguably brush), that is what I’d challenge you to recognize.

    • @katsoupman3218
      @katsoupman3218 2 месяца назад

      @Wince_SC  2 месяца назад +1

      Don't worry about your tone. It's nice to see someone passionate about this stuff and question it when someone brings something new into the picture.👍
      Now I can agree that my explanation of kiting has seemed to have gotten mixed in with skirmishing, an oversight from me trying to simplify what kiting is for people who don't know anything about it.
      As for custom wellstring, I wouldn't say I was disappointed, more so confused by its kit. Someone did point out to me in another comment, the use of tracking, plus wave breaker not taking away the main weapon makes c well better in comp against wall weapons such as squeezer.
      And regarding your question "why should every stringer only be a kiting weapon?"
      That's not quite what I was aiming for the video to be about, instead the aim was to show / tell about kiting as a diverse role that contains serval different play styles, with me listing 3 - 4 of them in this video alone.
      Though I might have simplified them a bit to much in order not to cause confusion. Leading to more confusion.😅
      From what I've seen after making this video, is that there's a major problem in how we as a community we classify weapons in this game. Yes a classification should be flexible, but not to the extent that Splatoon has.

    I think the idea of this video is good but the execution quite poorly.
    „People don‘t know about outing weapons“ the roles skirmisher/slayer, anchor and support were made by one of the best comp analysts FLC. This document has been used to classify weapons since splatoon 2 which is why these four classes are being referred to when looking at weapons. Kiting shouldn’t be portrayed as an already existing weapon type but as the idea of it being new and how the stringers fit into it compared to their already assigned roles.
    I personally felt lost hearing the phrases „kiting weapons have aoe“ the concept of a kiting weapon is not showcased in this video, so using it like that is misleading.
    Over all, I like the idea but since you’re including the word role, you have to keep competitive in mind cause in casual roles don’t matter. And I think there is a lack of understanding about what specials/subs/roles are used for.

    • @Wince_SC
      @Wince_SC  2 месяца назад +1

      I can agree with the execution being quite poor for this video, due to it originally being just about the Wellstring V.😅
      Some players also seem to know what kiting is, whilst for others this seems to be a confusing topic. I think this might be due to the knowledge / framework of the slayer, anchor and support roles that where made into what seems to be fluid roles. Which doesn't seem to work so well for a game like Splatoon. (To be fair though, set roles also wouldn't work.)
      For those not to knowledgeable about kiting (or hearing about it for the first time), I chose to simplify a lot of stuff in this video to give a more general out look on what kiting is, and how a weapon is made for an advantage with that playstyle / role. But it seems I made it way to broad and ended up creating more misunderstandings.
      I think my lack of knowledge in Splatoon's completive side of things is what's wrong with this video, alongside me using multiple terms for the same but different things.
      I see this video as something I'll need to remake in the future.
      Then I'll be able to take some of the notes / advice / knowledge from the comments to have a more fleshed out video made.
