- On this week's episode of IGN's weekly PlayStation show, Podcast Beyond! episode 728, host Jonathon Dornbush is joined by Jada Griffin and Mark Medina to discuss what's up with PlayStation's alleged new subscription plans, and what they might mean for PS4 and PS5 owners next year. The trio discusses the reported new details of the alleged three-tier program, which would offer combinations of PlayStation Plus, PlayStation now, and new features, including allegedly demos, game streaming, and back catalogs of PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP games. The cast dives into what we would want from such a subscription plan, if we think PS4 and PS5 first-party exclusives would launch into such a service, and how generally the offerings, as we know them, would compare both to Microsoft and Xbox's Game Pass and Nintendo's Switch Online subscription services.
Plus, the cast also digs into the recent news in the world of PS4 and PS5, including Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves collection's release date, some quick Game Awards predictions, and much more.

Gamepass Ultimate is incredible value you're getting Xbox Live/4 Games with Gold,EAplay,Gamepass Console/PC and Xcloud all for that $15 a month🤯
I give it one more year before they start raising the prices
@@jaynordiaz4609 they'll raise it $5 when they add Ubisoft+ 🤷♂️still great. Tier 3 of Sonys Spartacus will be higher that's without Day and Date from 1st & 3rdparty, no EAplay or Ubisoft+ or PC and their Cloud won't be as good
@@lordxboss5700 how do you know what tier 3 will cost, have you seen some inside documents or what not?
I expect it to basically be almost the same as ultimate, which is an increase in from the current 60$ for ps plus and 60$ for ps now... which is 40 bucks cheaper than Gamepass Ultimate's yearly cost.
Also, isnt the cloud system sony uses the same one xbox uses... so idk how it can be worse
They’ve already said they are pretty far along into production for FF7 part 2. They started working on it before Part 1 even launched. We will be seeing something from it sooner than later for sure. I hope we see something at the Game Awards because part 1 was incredible
No way part 2 releases next year. Pointless to show a game more then a year away at the show
@@Blballerboy bro you realize how many video games have been teased years before release
@@Blballerboy Pointless or not, they basically do that every year for almost every big game.
@@tackydesign6064 look you guys were right, they showed the PC trailer OMG I eat my words 😂
What happened to Brian and Max? This is the worst episode and iteration of beyond by far
I'm totally with Mark. In the words of Greg Miller, "old game is old." LOL I have no desire to play PS2/PS3 games, but I'll be glad that this is something that exists. :)
I have PS now I love it it’s more games than I can handle. My nephews come over and they love it
looking forward too this i want marvel rise of the nemesis game it deserves a remaster with more characters
Yooo!! Same! I actually did a marvel Nemesis rise of the imperfects on my youtube channel! I really hope they do make a remake!

P
I remember being bummed that there were so many imperfects :-/
Mark gets on pointless tangents way too much and is constantly cutting off Jada. His input is more often than not negative and un related where as Jada stays on topic and provides solid fb on what is actually being talked about. Time for another replacement.
@@subtegral definitely don’t want a dorno replacement! Also am totally happy with the addition of jada. But we can do better than mark. The king of name dropping games no one played.
Game Pass is definitely the only subscription service I will have going forward. And I will use my PS5 for their amazing exclusives which I will gladly purchase. Absolutely love them both, for different reasons.
No way Sony puts first party exclusives day and day. They make tons of Exclusives and spend a lot more than Xbox. So it's not profitable business to follow Game pass model in regards to Exclusives. I think maybe after like one year or couple of years then making it free would make it sense
Number one: This is not a gamepass competitor. It's just at best a combination of disparate services. PS+, PS Collection & PS Now (with the currently on trial 'extended demos' thrown in). As such, I think it should only have 2 tiers.
PS+ - Exactly how it is now, but a little bit cheaper. Maybe $50 a year as suggested.
PS+ Platinum (or a better name) - PS+ benefits + PS Now + Demos + Larger backwards compatible catalogue. $70 a year (or $80 if they don't drop the base PS+ price).
My reasoning is that I just don't think enough people care about backwards compatibility to actually pay for it. Sure, everyone says that they want it but for one, they are mostly all talk (and won't use it), and for two, they usually mean the ability to read discs directly on the system (not just via a service). So I don't know why PlayStation would offer backwards compatibility as a service tier. Just don't see anyone ever paying for it.
Also, the last valid reason to even roll out this service at all is to not only rebrand PS Now, but also to finally launch it in more than just 5 places around the world (or whatever the actual number is). PS Now is missing in a lot of countries so they might just kill two stones with one bird.
Exactly. People thinking that this is gonna be a gamepass competitor are just setting themselves up to be dissapointed.
@@reach5589 Which Sony would never do. Just like Nintendo would never do it.
Of course it's a Game Pass competitor. It'll do everything Game Pass does except day one first party games.
@@Optamizm Too much of Gamepass' appeal and identity resides in the "first party day and date" promise, for better or worse. So when people hear "PlayStation Gamepass", too many of them will assume they'll get the new games day and date as part of their subscription. That is why they're not competitors.
Gamepass focuses on Future releases. PlayStation uses services for legacy content (with few exceptions). They're both services but their intended draw is too different to be compared to each other. Much like how a van and a sports car both move you but they're be little point in contrasting the two against each other.
@@E4xtream yeah, that's why when you go to the Game Pass website, you are met with it telling you about day one games..... Oh that's right, you're not.
What is Game Pass between releases? Why put older games on there is nobody cares about them?
They're comparable. Get over it.
$15!per month... seriously? How is that a GP competitor? If anything i think it will just be further evidence that GP is so much better value. I had GP PC and threw it away as I didn't have time, but it's clearly excellent (if aggressive) value. I will be shocked if tier 3 isn't streaming based, and my guess is what Sony is doing is mostly not just rebranding PS Now.... if it doesn't just disappear. You're forgetting also that licencing for these games is a real headache
gamepass ultimate is $16/month
@@elleandroid and you get a helluva lot more than was rumoured here... now of course we won't, now the real value until it happens (and ,noting Sony there's every chance it wont). The point is that just repackaging products you already sell isn't going to fool anyone, and especially if you're not getting a lot more. And I have to say I would have preferred Sony found a different way to compete as they will almost certainly not be able to compete with GP one-on-one.
Gamepass is incredible - and microsoft streaming on PC at least works great (i finally played Fable 2)... I hope sony steps up and gives thier fans something similar... Especially if they allow some version of that on PC also...
Don't forget the rumor from last summer that Crunchyroll was going to be added to PS Plus, probably a part of the rumored tiers.
This whole generation I've been waiting for anyone in games media to address the fact that ps1 classics (and most PS2) were not carried over to PS4. I get that PS3 is difficult. But Sony chose not to allow us to keep ps1 / ps2 from our digital library. When I bought these I never in a million years thought companies would get away with locking our purchases to old hardware instead of having our games in an account like Steam.
“How can you play Endwalker if you can’t even begin Walker” is my favorite joke of the month.
PlayStation Now is on PC. PC players have played Bloodborne through it.
And it runs like ass.
@@elliotwhite182
It's the same as all streaming services. It's all dependent on your connection. There's a huge difference between being able to have native PC games downloaded to your system with Gamepass and streaming games to PC with PlayStation Now. Some people have had success with great connections using the service but when this Spartacus gets off the ground they'll need to start adding some sort of downloadable option to PC. PC guy should be happy about this and Xbox Fanboys should have plenty of ammo. While PlayStation Fanboys will have plenty more to cry about or except the future.
I use Playstation now on PC.. I love it. It has more of the games I like than gamepass does, but now im worried I will lose PS Now on pc with this merge of services. I have already paid for an extra years sub, and this is happening in maybe ...6 months? Don't own a console so this sucks. Hope they dont drop us pc players.
I doubt they would.
PSnow was great for the first 6months I had it but I've played and beat all the big Sony exclusives I wanted to and since then I'm just done with PSnow. I'm not a trophy hunter and once I've beat the great Sony Story driven campaigns it's over for me and there's no way Sony can drop new titles fast enough for me to subscribe again. Maybe in a couple years and enough titles build up I'll jump back in and do the same thing 🤷♂️
Where Max, Bryan and Lucy at?
Mark rocks. His opinion on playing old games is 100% how I feel. Well done sir
Never understood the appeal of Game Pass. It cannot be financially viable long term and I think MicroSoft's huge money bin is the only reason it still exists honestly. I am fine with just buying my games but I get where some might want to rent them monthly. Just not for me.
Maybe I'm simple, but I've never seen a controller worth $200. Damn! Maybe it has a lifetime warranty?
@@subtegral I guess I don't have to eat EVERYDAY.
Any Beyond that mentions The Bouncer is a great Beyond!
Why does it seem that John has such a hard time finding more than 2 people for Beyond!?
Unlocked always has at least 4. Sometimes 5 with a special guest.
Just like the PS5, hard to find more guests.
Because no one wants to join.... seriously, the LOL moment for me was when Jada jumped in to ask the BC question, and i actually thought she was instantly more a real host. JD has kinda become blah this last 1-2 years. I think this show needs some new leadership... and some new energy. Having said that RM on Unlocked is like death barely warmed up... so maybe its an IGN issue.
@@AdelaideBen1 Totally disagree but respect your opinion. RM is a super fan and has deep ties into the industry, also is critical of Microsoft and Xbox when he needs to be. They have more interesting topics in my opinion on there as well...The last 6 months Playstation really hasn't had much to talk about...
@@justinshaw7887 Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying that Unlocked isn't interesting, just RM has a very low-energy vibe. Actually the one thing that I give him credit for is that he does tend to be critical of XB - which is very healthy. I think one of the challenges Beyond has is that Sony really seems to have lost its narrative voice (since the announcement of the PS5) - and I think this translated to a lack of direction for the brand... MM was right about the Deathloop meme; added to that and the often self-inflicted bad-news stories that keep dominating the PS news-cycles. Even this discussion about a new GamePass competition mostly just reinforces how Sony have lost momentum. It's difficult - as on one hand IGN shouldn't be advocating/selling the different platforms, but on the otherhand the point of these shows is to keep us interested... unfortunately I think JD isn't really doing either (though that's just my opinion).
@@AdelaideBen1 I'm with you there, since summer of this year, Sony hasn't really had much to speak of. They came out strong with Ratchet and Clank and Returnal but really since Flight Simulator, Xbox and Gamepass have dominated the conversation. I'm lucky enough to have both systems as well as a Switch. Microsoft, in terms of hardware, knocked it out of the park this gen. Games are now starting to catch up. Sony made a good machine but, in my opinion, an inferior and less consumer friendly one...I mean, who would've thought that in 2021 you'd have to open up your console to physically add more storage capacity to your PS5??? Still, I take your point on low energy hosts and just kind of babbling through a 90 minute podcast.
For the record, you CAN play Ape Escape 2 on PS4 (although DON'T play it on PS5, it has a ton of graphical issues), and Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits is also available and shouldn't have problems.
I was starting to think that I was the only person to ever play and love The Bouncer on PS2
Give me anime, movies, shows, and games for $20 a month discount for paying yearly and free games monthly that would be Gamepass killer
Final Fantasy 16's art style Harkens back to Vagrant Story and that original designer. You also see this art style in Final Fantasy 12.
As a PC gamer I enjoy PlayStation Now. With infinite free trials I play first party PlayStation games for free without having to buy a console.
I wish beyond on apple podcasts would update on Wednesdays too, wanna download the episode😣
Since launch of PS5 there hasn't been a single worthy 'PS5' game on PS Plus so I don't have high hopes for this new service they are thinking about.
While a possible game pass rival excites me. I don't think that it will be able compete unless Sony goes all in with day one first party games.
Funny Sony code naming their subscription service Spartacus because Microsoft stood up and said “I am Spartacus” and Sony just copied them.
I think this new PlayStation plus is more like Nintendo subscription plus rather than game pass
38:16 wait a minute there.... I recall Cerny said that the Tempest Audio Chip was very good at some calculations just like the Cell Chip on PS3 was..... Could they have this chip repurposed to play local PS3 games??? 😱😱😱
WHY do you guys NEVER talk about what you’ve been playing any more? Adding more stuff, but you can’t even fit that in.
Maybe they aren't PS games?
I think it's amazing you all actually found and bought a PlayStation 5. Must be nice....
Playstation 5 pro should have no discs all digital like Netflix Steaming Service
Feels good to be around PlayStation brethren
Xbox can put games day and date as their games have microtransactions and are Service games such as Sea of Theives, Halo etc. Playstation are mainly single player games. Putting day and date will loose them money. For example for Horizon forbidden west I would pay 10 or 15 for one month, complete the game and then cancel until the next big game, rather than paying 70 per game. Hence Playstation will miss out on revenue with no way to get back as its likely forbidden west has no microtransactions.
Next year games are only single player for xbox. Stalker 2,Redfall, Starfield etc. Let's see wat happens.
When this comes I can finally retire my PS3 and PS2 and put them on proper display
If first party games aren't day and date this will fail. It's the only reason I have game pass.
Xbox Gamepass is on another level. Pretty sure that PS can give a competition, but it can never dethrone Xbox gamepass. Kinda hard to accept, but its true.☹️
Of course they can. The question is will they try?
@@Optamizm if the leaks are accurate than gamepass has nothing to worry about but if Sony decides to put their games day one things will definitely get interesting
@@supercheapme having a catalogue of lots of games to play, just like game pass, is going to stop a lot of people jumping ship to Xbox. They don't need day one first party games to compete, they just need a good service at the right price point.
@@Optamizm I still don't think value wise it will be competing with gamepass at a similar price but if they put tier 2 at like 8 a month (undercutting gamepass) for some older ps4 games and online it will have a lot going for it
@@Optamizm Sony is a billion dollar company while Microsoft is a TRILLION dollar company. Sony doesn't have the money to bring out new day one games to their service like gamepass does. They can however bring out a combination of older games as well as their ps1 - ps4 catalogue. But unless Sony gets a lot more money there's no way they could ever compete with gamepass.
Im on board with most things here, BUT im sorry, if some indie programmers can get 99% of ps3 games to work on PC : Sony can do it too. They just dont want to : Mark Cerny is an ultra smart guy, so I dont think he's the wall, Sony doesn't want to take the time, but again for game preservation they should.
What I want to know is how Sony's "Gamepass" is gonna affect sales. Did it affect Xbox? How often do games go on sale and are discounts as good as before? Anyway, I generally prefer "owing" a game and play it in my own time, besides $15 (or pounds, or euros) is $180 a year, quite a step-up from $60 (actually $45) for "vanilla" Plus.
All the first party games have their physical disks drop in price really fast. It did ruin games with gold though and spartucus may do the same for ps+
Its not going to compete with Xbox service unless they do day and date with their "exclusives" even though they're popping up on pc sooner and sooner. Xbox already has 30 million subscribers in GamePass and making a Killing as oppose to the 2 or 3 million in ps now lackluster service.
I have troubles wanting to pay for playstation plus as it is now because the games are so hit and miss & have never had playstation now. If I could get the classics for slightly more cost then i might be tempted, but I have a feeling they are going to overprice this service and I will not be interested then. I also hope they sell the classics separately or allow me to keep access of my already purchased versions of games I have. Also the rumor that like PS3 & I think it was PSP being streaming is super uninteresting to me as streaming is just not a good option for so many people.
Lol wow this is who IGN has talking about games?
A review for Halo is still important because it can convince people to buy GamePass.

I don't care that much about PS Game Pass, I'm trying all platform games on Xbox and keep on buying them on my PS. Im not ready not change my Trophies for Achievements.... Also, PS NOW IS NOT AVAILABLE on my country, so, it's not appealing to me.

IGN sunk days gone with another terrible review - Zombies is over used minus 30
their banter is so cringy
The reason why Sea of Thieves, Grounded, Forza, Halo Infinite and others work on GamePass is because the whales are paying the microtransactions to cover the balance sheets.
If Sony do a gamepass say goodbye to high quality games, Microsoft had only 2 games with good graphics Forza and gears 5 that's it Xbox cannot make high quality games because they will loose alot of money,
Sony make too many high quality games and I prefer to pay and have the best games and not a service with dumb games like battletoads, grounded
Exactly. Sorry folks but I’m not cheap, I’ll gladly pay $60 or $70 for high quality content that PS puts out. Also, with things like gamepass - they have to keep cranking out new games to keep prescriptions, which also leads to less quality games
This is why Sony isn't including new release first party games. If they ever do, they'll add another tier and charge extra for it.
You haven't played Flight Simulator. And there's Fable coming on the FH5 engine. Avowed. Doom/Doom Eternal have great graphics. Wolfenstein. Etc.
