Brian, I have to disagree with the statement that the relationship between Bethesda and Xbox wasn’t as strong as HouseMarque and Sony. Just because one wasn’t making exclusive games doesn’t mean they didn’t work together extensively behind the scenes. In fact, during the round table with Bethesda, Todd Howard said that the only reason Elder Scrolls came to console was because Xbox helped them figure it out. Additionally, any time Xbox was considering and testing new hardware and what features it should have, they would go show Todd and the team and get his feedback. That sounds pretty invested to me

Whoa, that memory card segment was almost the same thing my parents did for me for Christmas. My parents hid slips of paper in small boxes each one contained a letter and a hint for where the next box was. When me and my sister found them all we rearranged the letters to make “PlayStation 2” and a hint to where the box was.
Brian is very wrong about Bethesda and Microsoft not having a close relationship. Xbox was the first place Bethesda software was ever on console. ES3: Morrowind & and ES4; Oblivion were both console exclusives to the platform with Oblivion being a pretty heavily marketed launch title for the 360. On top of that Xbox has had multiple times exclusives like the original Rage among others. There’s been a history of Bethesda games working way better on Microsoft (I’m talking Skyrim) and Bethesda folks have been quoted that some of that was PS3 infrastructure but other factors were their close relationship with Microsoft on boarding teams. When I think Bethesda my thought of where those games exhaust inherently is PC & Xbox. I think the merger (while huge and relatively white whale-ish in this industry) was because of a path that the two companies began treading down a long time prior.
The PS3 being a mess to develop for is not the same “relationship” as Housemarque mostly making PlayStation exclusive games for the last decade. That’s all I was saying. I didn’t deny they have a relationship but Bethesda hasn’t been making Xbox exclusive games for ages like the exclusivity history behind many of the developers that Sony has signed recently.
@@BrianAltano I see where you’re coming from. Apologies, perhaps “really wrong” was too Sith-like an absolute. I just think there’s some parity there when it comes to the relationships. For instance, when I think launch years of OG Xbox I think Morrowind and launch year 360 I think Oblivion. And then I think launch of PS4 I think Resogun and launch PS5 now is Returnal. You see what I’m getting at?
No history between Bethesda and Microsoft? I love you guys and the podcast, but you guys can’t be this ignorant. Morrowind was an Xbox exclusive and Oblivion was a timed exclusive. There is deep history there. Most of the acquisitions have had good relationships with MS. You guys seem to be stuck in the Xbox One/PS4 generation. There’s nothing before or after lol.
Kojima is making an XBox game. He already said his next game is going to be cloud based. And strangely ... he visited Microsoft headquarters and spent the day with Phil Spencer 2 days later Sony doesn't own a cloud server. Microsoft does.
Kojima actually said early last year he wanted to make smaller titles that is released digitally and is episodic in addition to a big game. Cloud based game doesn't rule out another PlayStation Studios project. Same with JP Games who is working on two large-scale titles with two different major companies. First title was like FF Type-0 with shorter playthrough and replayability with multiplayer. Second title was more ambitious and open-world like an evolution of FFXV. JP Games can work with both MS and Sony as well as Kojima Productions.

After this latest acquisition... and the pending Bluepoint one... I'd really love Arc System Works, IOI and maybe Kadokawa (From soft). Kena devs would be awesome too.
Arc System Works is rumored in late stages. After EVO acquisition it makes sense because I heard earlier this year before Sony's IR day they were in negotiation with a Japanese studio to acquire. Sony doesn't have a fighting game to themselves and SFVI will most likely be multiplat this time around. Thank god the rumor is not coming from Sam or Tidux on twitter. I wouldn't believe them after their fiasco with two Japanese studios. Falcom and Level-5. It didn't make sense because PlayStation division hasn't worked with them in years if ever with Falcom. They don't do random acquisitions. Wishful thinking from fanboys.
I mean let’s be honest this was a studio that Sony already worked with exclusively. I do believe the studio has proven they can get it done. Now the issue the studio has always had before their latest release was sales. They’ve always made great games but for whatever reason people who were not gamers people not into our universe didn’t seek out their games. These games were highly reviewed but they still didn’t get the traffic they deserved. So I think it’s a good acquisition for Sony because all the studio really needs is a little bit of cash and a spotlight. No I’m not going to necessarily gifts only a pat on the back for finding some unknown studio we’ve all known they were great this is just a nice financial acquisition. Sony got a really good studio for probably a really cheap price. I would argue they should’ve bought them before they were latest release because they probably had to pay more money for them. If they had purchased the studio when they released their last PS4 game that for whatever reason didn’t sell very well or at least as well as it should Sony could’ve probably paid less money in today’s dollars. We know Sony made this acquisition now because they can’t look like they aren’t making any moves against Microsoft they have to do something to look like they’re fighting the good fight yes they’re winning the fight but Microsoft is landing some heavy body shots.
@@stefanhatcher6486 No ... they worked together. Bethesda didn't think porting Morrowind to a console was possible. Microsoft helped them port Morrowind to the OG XBox. Playstation can not afford to do a Gamepass model as Playstation needs to post a return on their games. They can't afford to do a long term investment into a Gamepass model where they may post a loss for years.
You guys at podcast Beyond are a joke. You are talking about how Sony buying Housemarque is great for gaming. You go on to say you don't want Sony to buy a Capcom or a Square Enix because that is bad for gaming and is a form of monopolizing gaming like Microsoft did with Bethesda. It is so ridiculous how you Sony fans justify and praise 1 company doing something while condemning another company for doing the same thing. What is even funnier of this episode is you said, "Sony has a relationship with Housemarque. So the acquisition makes total sense. But Microsoft buying Bethesda came out of nowhere because Microsoft and Bethesda are not known as having a good relationship. Microsoft just bought Bethesda for money and money alone." That comment is a bunch of BS. Microsoft and Bethesda has always had a strong relationship. Todd Howard on a Microsoft E3 stage was a very common occurrence. Microsoft and Bethesda close relationship started when MS helped Bethesda port Morrowind onto the OG XBox. Todd Howards said they never in a million years thought their games would run on an XBox. But it was Microsoft who proved to them that it could be done and it was Microsoft that opened the door to endless possibilities by allowing them the opportunity to port their game onto a console. And then the relationship continued when they helped Bethesda build Oblivion for the 360. Skyrim for the PS3 was an unplayable and broken mess. But the game ran fantastic for the less powerful 360. Because Microsoft helped Bethesda with the port. Sony did not. My point is. Microsoft and Bethesda had a strong relationship since the early 2000s. Todd Howard and Phil Spencer are close friends. Todd Howard does not hide the fact that after he released Fallout 76 and people were outraged. The first person he called to confide in and ask for advice was Phil Spencer. And it was Phil Spencer who helped Todd Howard turn the game around. Phil Spencer had no obligation to help Todd Howard. He did it because He and Todd have a very close relationship. And to this day. Todd Howard credits Phil Spencer for turning Fallout 76 around. And contrary to popular belief. Fallout 76 has a very active community especially on XBox Sorry IGN ... you are absolutely wrong with your assumption that XBox and Bethesda didn't have a close friendship. They always had a great working relationship.
@@XXnegotronXX In the end. All acquisitions are about money. If you think differently then you are living in a fantasy world where you believe everything is sunshine and rainbows Stop being so naive. lol creative freedom largely at sony? then what happend with bend? sony japan? Naught dog? etc... all these studios literally forced to work on things that are not largely creative, they are just things that sell well.
I believe that's true because the art work will not come if they force employees! They can make games fast if they doesn't have freedom but sony games are some kind of art for sure! The introduction of ghost of Tsushima is one of the example! Don't disagree or argue unnecessarily! And don't forgot , for 2020 three sony games are nominated for game of year! If you believe those games are nominated because they only sell well then COD should be nominated for game of the year too
Buying a studio that have a great relationship isn't something new, buying them also eliminate any financial issues the studio might have, and having them take more risk with bigger budget since they're a first party studio.
If Sony didn't buy them. The studio was closing. Sony needs studios. The Returnal studio was in ruin from the lack of sales of returnal (only 250k copies sold). So it works out for both of them.

"I don't want consolidation, I don't think it is good for the industry" and then he proceeds to say how MS went and did what they had to do. Come on dudes, just admit Phil holds your pockets.
they just say what they're told to say
so you are upset ms bought bethesda? play their games on pc and i personally think mc aquiring bethesda will make bethesda's games better since they'll have more recources and they admitted they were struggling financially.
Microsoft had the better acquisitions
I wouldn't call Bugthesda a good acquisition! There's a good reason a big company like that was up for sale. Sony's exclusives typically sell more units than Bethesda's multiplats.
please have Casey as a guest! PLEASE!!!!!
The title to this episode should hv been WHY SONY LATEST ACQUISITION DONT MAKE SENSE lol I hope the next game buy HOUSEMARQUE don’t be 70$ and BLUEPOINT partnership is not a big deal with until something big happens
Why housemarque next game shouldn’t be full price can you explain please.
There was a reason why Sony was able to buy the Returnal developers.
True story ... the Game sold so poorly. It only sold 250k copies. The studio didn't even make the money back it cost to develop the game. So they had to sell to Sony or it could have meant closing their doors.

@@PhinneusPrune no matter what you say Sony stated returnal was a success. Also it was only a matter of time before they were acquired by PlayStation due to their close relationship throughout the years.
@@PhinneusPrune show us the proof then
The game stayed on top 10 most sold ps5 games for 3 months and it sold good enough that Sony decided to acquire them. Stop spreading lies.
Lmao 🤣 amazing that when PlayStation acquires studios it's all good, but when Xbox does it it's not come on now stop being Fanboys and get your head out of the clouds, to say that Bethesda did not have a relationship with Xbox over the years but PlayStation has had relationships with the studios they have acquired, is absolutely ridiculous if you guys are going to have these type of conversations let's be fair I understand you guys are talking about PlayStation but you don't have to be fanboys and down Xbox, this is coming from a gamer who's been gaming since the Atari days and who owns all the systems, this is the problem we have with gaming media and Fanboys from any platform let's give credit where credit is due, at the end of the day it's about games and all three platforms rather it be Playstation Xbox or Nintendo they all have games, happy gaming to all 👍🏼👌🏽
I wish I could get 2 digital edition ps5 for me nd My son. But just everybody's else who's CAN'T get ps5. But then Sony wants to give out emails to people who's already has a ps5. That's really FUCK UP Sony giving people emails about buying ps5 when they got ps5 already. Sony should of send emails to people's who's doesn't have a ps5 still looking for ps5......
Meh
Why are you always apologizing for Sony? If your son commits a crime, is the nature of crime any less serious because it was someone you love? You wanna charge $70 for games that's your business. When you start fucking over Indies, that's just greed. $25000 + 30% of sales generated... Scumbags! Some of these games are made by one person making their first game. And you want $25000 + 30% to spotlight their game... Greedy Scumbags.
Playstation needs to compete with Xbox on Gamepass! It's customers deserve better.

No they don’t.
@@yuiyuiuibiguoh7531 XBox has only had more games than Playstation since 2017. So I don't get your comment
@@PhinneusPrune Xbox games are low quality compared to PlayStation games.
Microsoft just bought Bethesda for money and money alone."
That comment is a bunch of BS.
Fallout 76 has a very active community especially on XBox
Sorry IGN ... you are absolutely wrong with your assumption that XBox and Bethesda didn't have a close friendship. They always had a great working relationship.
Xbox and Bethesda or Todd Howard and Phil Spencer? Come on dude it was for the money, what was it again over 7 Billion dollars lol Ok
@@XXnegotronXX In the end. All acquisitions are about money. If you think differently then you are living in a fantasy world where you believe everything is sunshine and rainbows
Stop being so naive. Sony would never have acquired Housemarque if it wasn't in their best financial interest. Having a good relationship is just a bonus.
@@PhinneusPrune you Xbox dudes are angry because you guys know deep down the only good thing the Xbox brand got going for itself is Microsoft money.
@@jayjayboy3000 If Microsoft money brings us great games at a low price then Microsoft money is a good thing to have. So I am not angry about it. I am elated 😂.
So I will turn it back on you ... you Sony fans are angry because you know deep down that Sony doesn't have Microsoft money. And that makes you very upset because in the end it is very bad to be a company with no money. Because in the end. Customers have to pay $70 for games that came out in 2009 Demon Souls 👎

lol creative freedom largely at sony? then what happend with bend? sony japan? Naught dog? etc... all these studios literally forced to work on things that are not largely creative, they are just things that sell well.
More creative freedom than Nintendo and Xbox who have studios that have done nothing but work on the same franchise for 20+ years 😁
@@stefanhatcher6486 nice try, but not even close brother.
If you believe those games are nominated because they only sell well then COD should be nominated for game of the year too
Pointless wasted of money since they were already working with PlayStation and making PS exclusives. Could have spent the money on something else.
Guessing they just wanted to make sure microsoft didn't swoop in and buy them out from underneath them 😂
Buying a studio that have a great relationship isn't something new, buying them also eliminate any financial issues the studio might have, and having them take more risk with bigger budget since they're a first party studio.
If Sony didn't buy them. The studio was closing. Sony needs studios. The Returnal studio was in ruin from the lack of sales of returnal (only 250k copies sold). So it works out for both of them.
