- On this week's episode of IGN's PlayStation show, Podcast Beyond!, host Jonathon Dornbush is joined by Brian Altano and Max Scoville to discuss the biggest news in the world of PlayStation.
We begin the show addressing the recent accusations against Activision Blizzard before jumping into word of PS5's huge sales success as it crosses the 10 million consoles sold number. We analyze that success in the face of supply shortages, as well as look at some of the PS5's biggest hits so far, like the sales for Returnal and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.
We also jump into the PS Plus lineup for August, some recent comments from Shawn Layden as he takes on a new role at a different media company, and much more. Plus, we answer some of your questions, like our hopes for PlayStation's handheld future, and more.

@jaylove I mean, I own a ps5 but haven't purchased a $70 game. But I also missed the ps4 gen so I'll be playing some missed exclusives. Then when something I am interested in, that's a newer title, goes on sale, I'll get it then. So who made you a judge of who is a gamer and who isn't?
About people not having rachet I’m sure there’s a lot like me who have the console but have to wait for their bday or Christmas to get Rachet and games like that cause they can’t afford it themselves cause of there age and stuff like that

So many people act like just putting console games everywhere instantly guarantees new players when the fact is that converting customers is hard as hell, which is why there are still game consoles to begin with.
Forcing the same customers jump around from platform to platform by itself is a quick way to lose customers and you know every new platform would have it’s own unique features/weapons, etc.
Been on a bit of a 1yr online break it's nice to see these guy's have still got it BEYOND!
Great that you guys are giving the necessary attention to the toxic climate at EA... And I especially loved how Brian managed to place it in context. Much respect.
IGN lives for that kind of stuff. If they could get paid to only talk about social justice issues and play games just for fun on the side and still got the industry gaming perks, it would be like 24/7 sploosh for them!

@@BrianAltano unrelated, but I really think the show would flow better if you or Max handled the A mic position, and Jonathon took a B mic role. Jonathon is very knowledgeable and should remain on the show, but he seems to be missing the charisma and confidence to lead the show. The awkward jokes are a little too much too. I'm an Xbox fan but Xbox got their asses kicked last gen. As a result, Microsoft/Xbox responded. Competition is good for everyone.
Did they respond, though? I know they changed their strategy to focus more on their subscriptions than on selling consoles (their interview right before E3 telling everyone the xbox would be an app on our TV's etc stopped me from getting a Series S this summer), but doesn't that have more to do with Microsoft wanting gaming as another pillar of their software business than them competing with Playstation? Phil Spencer said Google and amazon were their main competitors, and while I take anything he says with a grain of salt, they didn't exactly come out swinging with big games for their new system, and the main selling point for the console is something they're also selling for PC's and phones. I think the console wars is something they're a part of mainly to be covered as an equal competitor, unlike Stadia, and using that as a Trojan horse for marketing for their services, which they plan to integrate with their search/map/OS efforts.

@@magnusalexander2965 I think we’re seeing it come to fruition this fall… Games are constantly flowing in thru Game Pass every week/month meanwhile PS’s only release till end of year is Deathloop and remasters…. I’d say that although Xbox’s main competitors are Google and Amazon, they’re absolutely ready to compete with PS and Nintendo
@@THE_DEEZLE I've had gamepass for phone streaming for over a month, and I think I've opened it three times. Some of that is because of input lag, but I don't find the library there particularly impressive, while I'm desperate to get a PS5 and play Ratchet, Returnal and Demon's Souls, and I'm holding off on Miles Morales and Death Stranding until I get next gen versions. I'm looking forward to trying out Flight Simulator today or tomorrow, but with Horizon and God of War next year it's not a difficult decision to pick a next gen console for me. However, if Microsoft can get their streaming to function well, they can stake an early claim to a different gaming market. Maybe. I still think doing Gamecube numbers after several years of gamepass is underwhelming when it's out on everything from consoles to PCs to phones, and I think Playstation could catch up in three months if they put all their first party games in a subscription service. Xbox is doing something interesting, but I'm not sure they're able to, or interested in, competing in console numbers. Their game line-up doesn't suggest a company hungry to win back their 360 market share

Lol compare that to the PS Now that’s been out longer and has less than 10% the subscribers than game pass….At the end of the day it is about games and when the PS5 only releases two games in six months… and then 1 game the next 6 months…. And then compare that to the constant stream of titles rolling out on game pass? It’s not even a fair competition. All companies want to be THE platform for streaming things and i think thats gonna byte them all in S.. I mean imagine paying 15 bucks for gamepass, neflix, playstation now, disney plus, whatever tv thing we want to have, stadia, nintendo online, the phone plan etc etc etc.. I think that even the air we breathe will come in a subscription plan one day.. Its nuts... Companies want a steady flux of income with minimum worries but we, the consumer, need to be very carefull with all this crap...
From montreal here. I was able to get a PS5 last restock from Best-Buy but it was only available as pickup in-store. I think it circumvented scalpers quite well, as it remained available for quite long. Showing up at BB the next day, only people in line at the counter were there to pick up a PS5!

The games industry needs a union.
People freaking out about $70 USD games when they had cost $50 USD back in 1996 for the PS1. If game prices followed inflation, games would cost closer to $90 USD. All things considered, games are dirt cheap compared to earlier years. That’s not including the ballooned costs of development and the much higher wages studios now have to pay for staff.

Update: As of today, 7/30/21, Sony announced "Horizon: Forbidden West" is delayed until early 2022. This shouldn't surprise anybody given the on-going pandemic + every other major title being delayed, too. However, like Brian said, there are tons of games to play on both the PS5 and Series X/S, so it's not like this impact of this delay will be major. It also gets it out of the way of Call of Duty, and other traditional Holiday releases e.g. Halo, Forza Horizon 5, etc.
The real question is are there games you want to play? There may be plenty of other games to play but are these the games you want to play? Hades is not the same as Horizon.

Everybody should do what they think is right, but I believe that companies like Activision/Blizzard won't change unless their bottom line is negatively affected. I know people want to believe that corporations care about the ground level grunts/consumers but trust me they don't give a shit unless it means more profit, and less cost. So if you believe that covering/buying their products is the right thing to do then by all means. You can have swift change or slow agonizing change. Look to Ubisoft, they seem like they really got their shit together even though everyone bought and still buys their shit lol.
And if you still want to play their games but not buy them, then just torrent them.

Sony didn't want MLB the Show to be a platform. MLB is the real producer and wanted more money. They told Sony unless you make it cross-platform they were going to give the license to EA or 2K. Sony Sandiego was built solely to make the franchise so they had to keep making the game.
There was the MGS Subsistence on PS2 that had an Ape Escape mode where Snake had to shoot the monkeys. I’m pretty sure that mode was taken out in the MGS HD Collection that came out on PS3. And as far as other weird tie ins, there was the MGS2 Substance skateboarding mini-game which was not that good, and the awesome Monster Hunter tie-in in MGS: Peace Walker. I’m not sure if it was in the original PS Vita game but it was in the HD Collection where I first played that game.

A few months ago, semiconductor manufacturers already said that it would take at least five years to build enough plants to manufacture enough semiconductors to meet demand. So this won't be over in the next two years for sure. You can bet in two years Sony will announce it will take another two years.

Lets not forget that you dont need 5 million users at $9.99 to recoup the cost of a $10 million dollar game. The $9.99 is recurring. if monthly you are getting $120 a year per person (If the pay monthly and dont drop it).

Sony had the chance to make Dreams as big as Roblox. They dropped the ball.
They can still do it , it has more features than Roblox but the need tp bring it to PC soon or they will miss the ship and Roblox will add those features.

as ps5 owner since week 1 of launch, i do NOT support $70 games. Period... Nor do i support the egregious $20-30 upgrade for a ps4 to ps5 upgrade for a game. I'll wait years to get ratchet and clank for $20. fuck the corporate greed.
yeah $70 is much and it's not corporate greed. you know it costs money to make a game and corporate/investors have to pay their game developers. A rough cost of development for a AA title is somewhere in the $60-$80 mil. A lot more for a AAA game like GTA which requires a higher budget because of more game developers and overhead costs. Sony/MS then takes a 33% share cut, supply chain retail stores take 10%, and the developers get the rest. So when you wait to buy it at $20 they aren't getting that much profit out of it and that game you didn't buy at launch might not get a future sequel due to poor sales.
That’s just how capitalism works. It’s all about corporate greed and how much money you can make off a single product. But the good thing about this gen there are plenty of cheaper games to play if you’re a new console gamer through back compatibility. Plus game sharing makes games much more affordable than the physical game days. The point is some people have the money to buy day 1 and will get it regardless. And some people will wait until it’s bargain bin. And others everything in between. I do like gamepass model, but the survival of this model depends on user base from a company perspective. There’s outrage from movie theatre companies right now with the emergence of hbo max and Disney plus day one releases on streaming movies. But you can see that as a whole each film is only making a fraction of what it used to make in theatres even though it’s theoretically more widely available now. Interesting to see how it all goes. Movies like endgame made 2.8 billion in box office alone, imagine a future where thats no longer possible because of consumer behaviour. At the end users will just dictate with their wallet.

I'm not OK with the PS5 game pricing being £70/game I get that games are more complicated and expensive to make but there's also a substantially bigger market and Dev tools have substantially improved too.

Bought R&C on eBay last week for £38.....and I'd rather put the money in Insomniac's/Sony's pockets but u less it's something I feel like I absolutely can't miss then as an adult with bills £70/game and PS Plus I'll wait for a sale or get it used on disc
The money saved from efficiencies created from better developer tools won't offset the money spent on wages for these ever expanding studios. Most well known studios have doubled or tripled in size in the last 10 years. Wages are the single biggest expense in most companies in any industry.
@@kyrosheel you may be right on that front but we're in the age of gaming being mainstream with the industry as a whole being bigger than the movie and music industry so that has to play into it.
The other thing being can most people afford to buy the same amount of games and if that's true for a fair number of people their losing volume for the benefit of such a small amount.
I'm by no means an expert in the economics of this which is why I'd like to hear a well informed piece from IGN or similar so that if the price hike is necessary then I can buy the games at full price that really matter to me and either not buy the others or wait for a sale or look at the second hand market
@@MidLifeGamerGuy lol not to be an asshole but I am right about that. And when you couple that with longer development times, you're paying even more out in wages. Then there's increased costs associated with overhead, and even additional server and data related expenses that weren't required in the past, but are more critical than ever today with more games relying on online services (ex. the whole emergence of GAAS games).
Games should cost a lot more based on all the market factors, however, a steep price would also drive away consumers. This is why every publisher is nickle and diming consumers with DLC, MTX like premium skins, remasters, re-releasing games via GOTY editions, etc etc.
No one at IGN would be able to really break this stuff down because they aren't subject matter experts, and they aren't privy to the financials. These guys are just gaming enthusiasts who flip console war headlines and narratives from message boards like Resetera and Neogaf.
Honestly, a $10 increase in price isn't really as big of an issue as people are making it out to be because there are tons of sales to take advantage of. Right now, you could get Returnal and Demon's Soul for 30% off via the Summer Sale on PSN.

The other element that plays into this is gamepass and if Sony react to that model that leaves me concerned about game preservation and the quality of games in general
I tried to play destruction All-stars a couple of months ago, it couldn't find a match and after 20 min of waiting I turned it off

Dorno needs public talking/speech practice, a lot of stuttering at the start and that sends doubt and diminish the message. Check how fluid spoke Altano in contrast, better and stronger the message gets.

Playstation should port Dreams to PC to make a cross-platform community. By using a mouse and keyboard, Dreams players would have an easier way to create content leading to further recognition in gaming. From a business perspective, Sony can identify the best talent and offer a spot within the Playstation Studios community.
Jonathon really needs to take care of himself. Dude looks like an absolute mess. I really hope he's not depressed or anything.

Thanks for addressing the Activation Blizzard issue. I’d love to just stick to gaming news, as games are a haven from politics and I’d love to keep things mutually exclusive when I choose to click a PlayStation podcast. At the least, address it at the end.

My thing is that if the scalpers have the hardware how will people buy the software which is where the real money is made. You can't sell software if the hardware isn't available to buy. Sony is doing something shady.

There's plenty of games to play on there, ratchet and clank, miles morales, spiderman remastered, destruction Allstars, returnal, final fantasy 7 , and other games that have been updated to play on ps5. Like where have you been?
@@Youre_Donee Returnals the only one if Im honest. The others are either on PS4 (Miles Morales) or Im not interested in (Ratchet & Clank). Btw I have the same stance for the Series X. Not a single true next gen system seller has been released🤷🏻♂️
Exactly. People keep listing games 'updated for the new consoles' as 'all of these games to play' for the console. While nice....that isn't really a reason to buy a system for many people...especially if they have played most of those games already and aren't looking to revisit them. I dont get why that is hard to understand. Neither PS or Xbox has MANY great games specifically for it yet. Though it is getting better for both and will continue to do so just like every other new hardware cycle ever.

Lol I wouldn't call PS5s being sold to scalpers who resell them to gamers for twice the price a success. Maybe from Sony's point of view but not from the gamers'.
No Sony will also see it as a fail. They need people to make digital purchases to make up for the loss they are selling the console for. They won't have digital sales if PS5s are stuck in a warehouse or garage.

I get that people like Ratchet, but personally for me Returnal was a far superior game. R&C is pretty and has solid mechanics but the game feels hollow and boring.

Game purchases say otherwise. If that’s the case there is some super attached ps5 game buyers. 1 in 10 ps5 users bought R&C rift apart in the last month by the official numbers. By your numbers that would be 1 in 5.
@@maxminy5634 Rachet only sold 1millionish... Returnal is like 500k. Disappointing numbers for 10 Million ps5 consoles sold. Look at the cross platform games like Miles Morales sold 6 million and MLB the show is at 2 Million. Proof is in the pudding
@@BTMaverick707 1 million in one month on a console with 10 million users is impressive for Rachet (that’s 10 percent). Returnal is 560k for a ps5 only niche difficult title. That’s also good for 10 million users. MLB the show is available on next gen consoles and 150 million last gen consoles (PS4 and Xbox). So that’s the weakest selling if you look at it in percentage, but benefits from the install base.

And a lot of IGN-employees have a seriously tough time dealing with criticism (and yes I know a high percentage of that criticism isn't really constructive). But it generally seems that any sort of critical/negative comment is met with nothing but distain from the IGN-staff towards the audience. I dont think despising what is left of your audience is the way to generate more views..

And while there are a couple of real ps5 games I wouldn't mind trying, at 90 a pop Canadian (slightly less on sale if you can find them) it's just not worth it. I did buy Ratchet& Clank - wanted to see the SSD in full glory. Having just played 2016 on the PS4 when it was free to grab I honestly don't think in the moment to moment it's that much of an upgrade from that. Plus it had numerous glitches including hard locking up the ps5, only unplugging from the wall worked. And then I got the usual chastisement on restart while it checks the drive (is Sony still using FAT32? MS makes modern drives and it shows). I've already played most of the titles on your list that in interested in as it is, the third parties either on One X or series X. Ps+ I had back in the ps3 days but never got that much out of so dropped it.
The fact you even have a ps5 is the real accomplishment. I can't physically find one
