One of the best interviews I have seen! As it happens, I played with Darryl in Miles' band in '86. In response to what Darryl said about preparing--When I first joined the band they put me in a hotel room in NYC for 3 days with 2 cassette tapes of shows they had just done. I knew I had to be *READY* and I practiced the 1st day for 16 hours straight, then 8 hrs on each of the next two days. So when I hit the stage for the first gig I was more dialed in than I have even been on a gig. There were a couple of fast lines that were simply beyond me but everything else I felt like I was nailing.
I had the chance to briefly talk to him for few minutes after an amazing show with Oz Noy and Dave Weckl here in Italy and he was like the nicest and kindest guy you could possibly imagine. He found the time to exchange few words with everyone in the room, it just floored me to see how humble and down to earth this guy was. Amazing musician and human being, so much respect.
Darryl's playing on Decoy is mind blowing.
I heard that! His playing on Still Warm with Sco is my all time favorite.
Our generation of musicians need people like Darryl! Such immense wisdom, authenticity and kind heartedness.
I can listen to this man speak all day. I've never heard anyone say I'm proud of my parents. Parents can't be perfect, but most of them are doing the best they can. What a great change of perspective. Shout out to all the parents out there.

I went to school with Vince Wilburn (Miles' nephew) at the American Conservatory of Music. He and Darryl were good friends, and Darryl used to hang out there and sit on the steps in the stairwell and practice by himself. He could really do a fantastic slap chordal walk thing then and always attracted an audience. Drummers *love* great bassists.. I remember us yanking him into an ensemble practice room once with 10 percussionists and jamming. Ahh, good times.
Great advice from Darryl. I was laughing when he talked about playing a blues to audition for Miles Davis, I read an interview with Darryl about how he got the Rolling Stones gig. Darryl said he got the call and as he said in this video he was getting prepared and was shedding all the Stones big tunes so he would be ready for the audition. Darryl said he got to the audition and they said let jam and started playing Blues tunes and none of their other tunes. Then Darryl get the call a day later and he's got the gig. So know how to play the Blues right especially if a bass player.

A Darryl Jones story. Back in high school, I was at CVS with Darryl in the orchestra too. I was a saxophonist. I was at Darryls' house listening to some music and he played a Jaco Pastorius version of Donna Lee, the Charlie Parker song. I said to Darryl, "I'm gonna learn that song Munch." I swear to God, two days later, Munch said "Terrence, check this out." And he played Donna Lee, note for note, at the same tempo as Jaco did it. That's when I knew Darryl wasn't just good. He was special.

WOW. What a great interview. I've been following Darryl since he was part of the Blue Turtles Band. This interview was just so well done, and I came away with an even greater respect for Darryl Jones. The part where he tells us that he was lucky to have his parents. Blew me away.
WOW! No BS, this is one of the most insightful interviews I've ever seen! I've known about Darryl and some of his story for a while. This interview gives me a new level of appreciation for him as a musician and a person. Darryl is an excellent example of preparation, talent, sincerity, and humility lead to success when the opportunity presents itself. Very cool!
The Stones were incredibly lucky to have gotten Darryl. He's raised their music to a much higher level.

@@helgeolsen8039 he's a much, much better musician than Wyman, and I'm sure Wyman will not disagree. Whether you prefer the Stones with or without him is a personal thing, but he sure tightened them up.

LJ, really?? Stones is still really Pop music. I think his work with Miles and later Sting really brought to music to a higher level.
I don't think the bass player on the Stones makes much of a difference.
Damn I love Daryll! Heard him in 86 with Kenny Kirkland, Charlie Drayton, Hiram Bullock and I still have the bootleg recording of it! Daryll was killing it!!
Been following Darryl since his Miles period, another great album he and Omar Hakim played on in those same years (mid 80's) is John Scofield's Still Warm: he and Omar cook up one incredible groove after another.
WOW......What a great interview.....humble.....great stuff about his parents.................loved it..........now a bigger fan than ever...WOW!

This series is great - Dom you're making it happen - but what Darryl says here - and the manner and tone with which he says it - makes this my favourite thus far. I'll watch it again and share it. Other sessions may be as good, though I can't imagine topping this one.

My first concert was seeing Darryl play with Miles Davis at the Lincoln Theatre in DC. It was life-changing.
For all the universes Miles visited, he still had Darryl play the blooze!

Wow! That was one of the most inspiring interviews I have ever seen! Darryl made me feel like things that may seem unacchievable are actually within reach if you just go about things the right way. This guy is sharing so much priceless knowledge on his own approach to music and I am just baffled by how humble he is after everything he has accomplished in his career. Great musician, great guy and I bet he's an excellent teacher too with his spot-on analyses and philosophical mind. I wish this interview had been at least an hour and a half and if I could I would click like a hundred times on this video. Thank you so much for this interview! It made my day!

Darryl played Star People / New Blues with the Randy Brecker Hip Bop Allstars tour 10 years ago which I watched live .Steve Lukather and Robben Ford turned that tune inside out..... on that tour with Daryl swinging !!!
The Sting documentary is where I first saw him and I thouhght, I like this guys energy and the way he plays. Im pleased he go the Stones gig as Im sure it pays well...even after 22 years! However, I think in some ways it's also denied me hearing him play with other artists. I love just how down to earth and humble he is.

Upchurch is the man! I didn't know that Daryl had played with him but I think it's great.
The Munch! What a totally kick ass dude, on all fronts!!!
I met Darryl at the bottom line in the late 80s at a Lou Marini show, at the time I was a NYC Park Avenue Chiropractor, I told him I played guitar seriously since I was 5yrs old and dying to play professionally, He said I should go for it, totally supportive, I said "i'making $600k /yr, world renowned, I'm not giving THAT up to be a nobody guitarist for $50 a night" he said you can do it if you really want to. Long story short, 2ys later, I sold the practice, played with Buddy Guy 50 times , Albert King, Albert Collins, BB King, SRV, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Greg Allman, many others. Darryl doesn't know how his encouragement made a difference in my life. I hope to tell him someday. He deserves his good Karma.

Daryl Jones, one of my favorites. Loved him with Miles too. The “You’re Under Arrest” cd by Miles comes to mind, with such a unique electric bass tone at the time. Great to hear Daryl speak. What an articulate speaker. Love to hear him play more with drummer Omar Hakim with Sting or Steve Jordan and other fusion drummers. Any suggestions of great albums with Daryl on fusion albums?
If Daryl’s playing was a dessert, it would be homemade butterscotch pudding. Homemade pudding, not factory made. 🍨
Yes! For sure, if you don't have it, be sure to check out John Scofield's "Still Warm" album, which is one of my all time favorite fusion records, and features Darryl, Omar Hakim, and the late Don Grolnick on keys. Fantastic tunes, and just stellar playing by all four musicians. "Still Warm" is still my favorite of Scofield's fusion oriented albums, and DJ plays great on everything there. They all do! A must have.
Great interview. John Schofield was said to have the equipment to blow Miles away. He never played with a beat as strong as Al Foster. Wynton and Bradford were new stars but hardly at their peak. in 1983 Sco was being anointed but I would say late 80s he really came into his own. Christian McBride said some new jazz stars got lucrative contracts prematurely in the 90s because of the Marsalis factor. Lester Bowie hailed Wynton as a genius at 19. he learned in a week what in Lester's words took him a month. When Wynton turned 30 Lester said Wynton wasn't the man. the conservatory kids ain't from the streets. Daryll is from the streets. Marcus Miller is. from the streets. great history
@Toortog Pown - Ron Wood said that first thing, for every bass player the Stones auditioned, he asked: "Do you want a Guiness"? Darryl answered something like, "Sure, I'll have a Guiness." Ronnie wanted to know what it was going to be like hanging out with them. (Darryl says how important that is in this interview, too.) Darryl started off right.
