Assam is associated with Shaktism, and Shakti is a deity you can pick, so maybe something around that? The emperor of Japan sat on his throne in silence. As the diplomat finished going over the recent peace deal following his nation's victory over the coalition, he turned his gaze to the mastermind behind the Ashikaga clan's bizarre yet meteoric rise to power; a large hawk, red of feather and strong of mind, which was presently bobbing excitedly from its perch next to the emperor's throne. "It seems another great victory has come to pass," said the emperor, "all thanks to you and your bountiful wisdom." "Yep," said the bird with a smug smile and the emperor sighed inwardly. Even after spending over 120 years in the courts of shoguns and daimyos, the hawk showed little appreciation for proper decorum. "Yes, another triumph," the emperor went on with a slight smile, "even with all the...lavish investment in naval policies." The bird turned a deeper shade of red and looked away. "Some memes are worth it," he muttered. The emperor had no idea what a "meme" was, but he paid it no mind. He and the other courtiers were used to the bird's strange ramblings about "CBs" and "military tech 6". Indeed, little about the hawk or his ideas for running a country could be considered normal. When he showed up in 1444 and convinced then-Ashikaga shogun to renounce his titles and become a normal daimyo, everyone thought they were mad. Yet, like a slow-blooming cherry blossom, the bird's ceaseless advice had allowed the clan to rise far above its previous exalted position. Now Japan was truly united, with extensive holdings in Korea and northern China, including the ancient capital of Beijing. Yes, the hawk was strange. But looking back at its contributions to his nation, the emperor found that such strangeness was easily tolerated. That still wouldn't stop him from occasionally poking fun at the bird. The red hawk smoothed his feathers and looked at the court around him. "Well, I think this is where I leave you all." The emperor nearly choked on his tea. "Leave, old friend?" he asked in barely a whisper. "Yep. I think you got things covered here and I'm feeling pretty happy with this run, so I better bail before I do something dumb like make you go bankrupt or trigger some internal conflicts." "Bankrupt? Internal conflicts?!" "Fourth-degree memery. Also tradition for me at this point. But I like you guys and I like what I've done here, so I won't do that even if it disappoints my viewers." "Viewers?! Noble Red Hawk, you can't leave us! Our nation has flourished under your benevolent guidance! Yes, your mannerisms are strange, but I never meant offence when I poked fun at your policies-" The red hawk held up a wing that silenced him. "Nah, man, I deserved that. I knew Naval and Maritime Ideas were garbage when I had you take them. I never thought we'd have to fight three big hordes at once, otherwise I would've taken Quantity or something. But now my work here is done. Japan is united and your flag flies over Beijing, so it's time for me to leave. There's many other countries and alternate histories calling me along, and I must keep going if I'm ever gonna reach Z." "But...But I..." The emperor felt tears forming at the corners of his eyes. The red hawk, the bringer of fortune and strange vocabulary, was leaving them. "Don't worry. We'll see each other again for sure! It just might be on opposite sides of a war. Toodles!" And with a flash, the red hawk was gone, leaving only the smell of smoke and a few feathers floating gently to the ground. The court was silent until one of the attendants spoke. "Did he just say...he's going to wage war on us?" The emperor buried his face in his hands and wept.
Okay, so I know it's gonna be like 2 years from now, but I got an idea for a goal when you play Venice (or maybe Genoa or Lubeck): Confirm Thassolocracy, as in, clicking the actual decision, which means you'll need to *finish* Maritime ideas, as well as become the strongest power in every trade node in the Mediterranean (or the Baltic and North seas as Lubeck). And considering that it'll be like 2 years from now, maybe you should write it down somewhere, lol.
I think to farther that challenge, conquer every naval trade center in the nodes you need for the decision and nothing else, and vassalize the rest of the nations in those trade nodes. All of them, don't feed one to another. Lubeck or Genoa is preferable. Now there's an interesting run.
I think I was a custom nation and I choose daimyo as my reform as I was in Japan with Kyoto and sagami which is where ashigaka would be and that made all the daimyos my daimyos but it glitched it so I could still get regular vassals and the daimyos didn’t fight each other which might helps in a vassal swarm

My best Japan game was forming as So (the pirate dyaimo), when you form Japan you keep the pirate tag and is a very fun Japan as you can raid around the coast of Ming and Korea
Ashikaga is more viable then people think. This is my strat I found while messing with the monarch Japan exploit (although I discovered this in a save that I didn't use the exploit correctly) No CB Korea as your first war as soon as you can. Yes, this involves fighting Ming before they blow up. It will go one of two ways: 1. You lose because Ming eats you so you get out of being the shogun (no such thing as downsides in this war) 2. You outlast Ming and white peace them letting you steal a ton of land from Korea. The stab hit sucks, but your better off even if you lose. The only thing to keep an eye on is if Ming is doing a navel invasion. Let them, this way the vassal swarm just kills off anything that lands (weakens everyone who is involved, this is good for you long term). After that you more or less are racing Ming for allies. You can declare a few wars on Ming's allies as long as you are small (white peace still works). Don't declare on them directly until they explode because Ming will win that war. If your slow at this point in the game you can be completely stalled until you get enough tech to colonize the new world. From there you can kinda start fighting whoever you want. My preference (although its a bad idea) is just to start no cbing all your vassals (get that sweet sweet -3 stab 20 war exhaustion combo) to form Japan as fast as possible. Of course you can keep pushing into Asia.
What are you gonna do for the daimyos, they all have unique ideas don't they? So you'll need to play them, interested to see what you do with then all. Edit - Especially following this descent into madness on the first Japanese video, lmao.
I guess i got lucky as ashikaga, as i was able to unify japan by 1491 and remain the shogun. sure diplo annexing the larger ones were expensive, but i managed and had the same amount of territory as you.
