When people ask me about Lords of the Fallen, I like to tell them that it's like the idealized form of Dark Souls 2. Basically, it focuses on level design and offers a lot of freedom in exploration, but unlike Dark Souls 2, its combat mechanics and movement isn't complete trash.
I'm a well-known hater of DS2, so it might come as a surprise that I'd like LotF, but I really enjoyed my time playing it. I know Lords of the Fallen has had a bit of a polarizing reception so far and it could still use a little improvement, but it's a really solid game with good fundamentals at its core. I know the developers are still working on improving the game, so I can only imagine that it will continue to get better as time goes on.
It took me a couple tries to draft this review, and while there's a lot more I wish I could have included, unfortunately some things needed to be left unsaid. I do wish I touched more on how impactful status effects and spells could be, and I also wish I talked more about how nice the balance is between ranged and melee combat in the game is.
Nevertheless, Lords of the Fallen does the "Soulsborne" or "Soulslike" genre justice, and even FromSoft could take notes on some of what makes LotF work so well.

I beat Lies of P 2 weeks ago, and LoTF a few days ago. Go into these games thinking they're their own games instead of "souls like", and you'll enjoy it more.

I've had a blast with this game, drip and setting are top tier. Only real gripe is really the constant issues with netcode for co-op/pvp. Helping out with bosses and duels tend to be more frustrating than fun when you're getting hit by attacks when they are half a mile from your character.

This is my first souls. Caveat being i played first boss of demon souls.
Over 150 hours in and man im enjoying this game. It seems the super souls fans dislike it and im over here like well i dunno what to tell you cause now i wanna play other souls.
My experience in a nut shut. I stream, so i streamed fighting pieta, 63 effn attempts. But now i was locked in. I had to progress. Maybe 10 for sister and thats pretty much where the struggles ended. High up front cost for what you might call a very fun experience.
I moved onto challenges and did a bow/xbow challenge which was seriously fun and eventually found to be cheese for most fights. Over all I'd give it an 8 but i feel a 7 is fair.

Very nice review. The inventory is really annoying to me and I wish they could sort it out and I want a storage system where I can carry only the items I want/need.
There is also something they implemented very well, the spells, holding the left trigger and having access to all the spells you are using is awesome, unlike any souls game where you have to cycle with the D pad.
I'm done with the game so far... platinum was fun aside the iron clad trophy.
I really had a blast with this game

The problem with the "covenant" rewards is that the devs are really, really overestimating how much people want to go through the tedium and keep playing the game. Same goes for level restrictions in MP, which are non-existent, because their vision is that the people who play the game for the longest, deserve to have an advantage, even though that very clearly just adds another layer of mess to their multiplayer and balance. There is absolutely no incentive to NOT max out your character. That's why achievements work that way too, why there's limited upgrade materials, why they had to back down on their NG+ "vision." If their constant, desperate, spineless walkbacks continue, though, some of those issues will be solved.
There is a reason the vast majority of content about this game aren't about lore, or cool gameplay feats, but ways to constantly farm, or break the game with the next big overpowered, one-shot build, or people reading the patch notes without a single attempt to analyze the changes like you would see with Elden Ring or previous Souls titles.
Also, it doesn't matter how much they buff the bosses, they're fundamentally uninteresting, to the point a faster attack or higher defenses will make 0 difference. They're all like fighting a DS2 boss with a playable character with DS3 speed, and more versatility than ER's character when it comes to projectiles, debufs, and magic.
I do think their core combat mechanics are good, I like how 1H and 2H attacks connect seamlessly, I like how they handle spell and projectile equipment and use, which is both simpler and more effective than anything Fromsoft has managed in 11 years. Sad part is, there isn't a single enemy, regular or boss, in the game that is able to put any mastery of these to the test. Doesn't help that you stop seeing new enemies as early as mid-game. Also, I don't understand how you took so long to see how good deflection is, since it's one of the best things they did for combat. They even buffed it in an early patch because their wishy-washy balance did make it less useful during late-game.
Umbral is a cool mechanic, but using the lamp is slow and tedious, especially when it comes to combat integration. And the Umbral side of levels stops being interesting after the first couple of sections. Then, they hardly ever offer more than additional enemies, or removing a short environmental hazard section. And if they do pretend to give more flavor, it's just a minor, 90s Zelda puzzle at best.
The Vestige removal in higher NG+ cycles only serves to reveal one truth they try to hide with their level design: the game is staggeringly linear. You don't really need them, and this is even obvious in how they speak about them, and why their NG+ walkback was textually aimed at completionists.
They're 2 games away of a truly fulfilling and good game. In terms of combat and exploration.
If you compare this game to Lies of P, the vastly superior game, and how out of the like 5 major issues players had with have been mostly resolved, with the exception of hyperarmor on heavy weapons (mitigated with other recent buffs), and high level math issues with scaling, with not even a quarter of the patches for this game, and how those devs manage and listen to feedback, who are also following a content map, and work on the changes taking their time, it's like two different planets. Again, LOTF devs appear spineless and desperate, while they simultaneously pretend that it's actually good for the player to endure tedium.

It's not that I didn't recognize the effectiveness of deflections, the issue was the timing for it felt "off" when I was mistakenly assuming the time it would take to block/deflect would be comparable to that of a dodge. Whiffing a block is also more punishing than a dodge, so it passively encourages players to go that route...or maybe I'm just programmed to dodge more from FromSoft titles.
I agree with a lot of what you say, and one of the things which interests me about LotF is that it feels like a lot of its "issues" are on the game "systems" side of things than the game mechanics side of things, which makes it feel fairly fixable.
While I didn't have too many issues with the enemy variety of LotF, I do agree that it would definitely have been nicer to have a few more enemy types, especially for Umbral since it's kind of the "common denominator" of level design.

The covenant rewards aren't for everybody, and incentivizing players to continue to upgrade their character as much as possible is a good thing. Being restricted from multiplayer because you invested a lot of time in one particular character is horrible for the experience of those players.
This game is not open-ended. Nor is it as long as a game like Elden Ring. A lot of people who are familiar with the genre had easily reached the end of the game and they were looking forward to experiencing the online aspects of the game with specialized/unique builds. I don't even really see how this is a critique of Lords of the Fallen. What? You understood the story? How awful.
The changes don't need to be "analyzed", but neither does Elden Ring's patch notes. If they weren't autistic, then nobody would even have noticed the changes made for the sake of "balancing" in Elden Ring. Not to mention, the games are in entirely separate situations. CI Games is a middleware company . They don't have a decade of experience making these kinds of games, and yet, they managed to beat out the decade-old developer in many categories.
Whether you find the world intriguing or not is up to you, but there are plenty of things in Lords of the Fallen which would require more investigation. If there's not a community for it, then so be it, but at least the story is interpretable. New enemies are literally introduced in every late game area. The Tower of Penance has their Hallowed Knights. The Abbey introduces the Abbess and Sanctified Huntress enemy types. The Empyrean has the Abiding Defender enemies. Bramis introduces the Conflagrant Seer enemies.
There are difficult bosses in the game, but it wouldn't matter if there were none or only a few. If you recall, both Demon Souls and Dark Souls did not feature difficult bosses for the vast majority of the game. The trend of difficulty that is expanded on in the later games is due to the reputation that the games had when they first released. Going back and playing the original "souls" games forces players - particularly the veteran players - to recognize that the bosses were really never that hard of complicated. Lords of the Fallen is a far greater successor to Demon's Souls and Dark Souls than Elden Ring is.
Even if you thought that there was no combat encounter that was "truly satisfying" to you despite recognizing the merits of the system, then you should be excited at the fantastic gameplay a middleware company was able to produce while looking forward to seeing how it develops over time. A lot of your "critiques" seem to be based on the notion that they should've known how to perfectly facilitate and balance a game that is so complicated and varied (even though From Software can't - and does a worse job - despite over a decade of experience).
The umbral lamp mechanic is not clunky in the least. In fact, this game has some of the most responsive controls in the genre, and the lamp has far more utility outside of simple traversal. Obviously, the lamps combat mechanics also play a major role in the gameplay.
There level design is spectacular, and their world interconnectivity is literally jaw-dropping. You call it "linear" like that's a bad thing when it is just as open ended as the Dark Souls games and Sekiro. They wanted to ship their game with a particular NG+ experience which changes up the formula...that's a good thing. If you didn't like the mode, then you didn't have to play it; as a bonus for players like you, they made more changes to NG+ to accommodate both kinds of players and they added additional options that even From Software hasn't included (NG+0).
And if you "don't need Vestiges", then it shouldn't have been such a major problem that they were removed in NG+. So, you can't have it both ways.
Catering to your audience isn't spineless. You'd have us believe that it is bad for them to listen to player feedback. Believe it or not, CI Games isn't rolling in dough! They are a middleware developer - who created a fantastic game - and they don't want to hemorrhage support. Who cares how many patches they send? They're clearly putting a lot of effort into ensuring the quality of their product overtime while also updating the game with new free content on a fairly regular (almost weekly) basis.
It's insane that you have apparently fallen in love with the so-called "tedium" of micro-managing your character in Lies of P. Or fighting the dozen NPC bosses throughout the game. Or the linearity of the levels. Or the lack of substantive enemy variety.
Lies of P is guilty of most of the things you accuse Lords of the Fallen of, and it's more annoying the way they do it.

Nobody was talking about the story. Shove your first two paragraphs back up your ass.
Those are reskins. Except for one. You didn't notice because enemies are trash.
Your Reddit brain comments on multiplayer balance betray your myopic approach, and it's funny considering how MP was DOA. Not even AC6's braindead multiplayer is as incompletely laid out, and that's an admitted afterthought mode by Fromsoft. The Covenant rewards wouldn't be an issue if multiplayer wasn't trash from both technical and gameplay perspective. If you don't see why it's important for balance and match making to restrict builds. You don't understand variety or skill expression. Your opinion on the matter is worthless.
The core combat mechanics are good. In a vacuum. Even my favourite thing, the 1H and 2H links serves no gameplay purpose other than looking cool, because the attack properties are the same unless it's the combo finisher. And saying they did something right when compared to Fromsoftware's stagnant approach isn't as big a deal either. Plus, it has been done before, too. The point of that was to concede that they have good ideas, at least. Arkham Knight also has the best combat mechanics and gadget integration of the Arkham Trilogy. Its enemies and bosses still suck, and don't require you to learn them to get high combo streaks. Low skill floors for braindead people. Just like with LOTF. But the theme with you is that you're unable to understand things beyond the most simple perspective, and since you think a game as straightforward as Lies of P requires micromanagement, your take on mechanics doesn't contribute towards anything.
The difference between me and you calling something micromanaging, is that you don't like when you're asked to learn about something slightly more complicated than simplistic, and get confused on the matter. Again, your Reddit brain shows.
They are spineless. They cannot even adhere to their "vision" because they're forced by the community to learn how idiotic their decisions are. After they ignored decades of Soulsborne and Soulslikes.
The sheer tedium of LOTF can be exemplified with one of their recent patched in quests, where if you've already beaten the game, you have to run back the gameworld to pick the rewards back. They were also so impressively incompetent about it, that if you picked up more than 4 of those rewards, it would lock out. Forcing you to either make multiple trips, or starting over AND make multiple trips to progress the quest. That is how the game operates as a whole on a fundamental level.
Umbral levels after the first two areas stop offering anything substantial to the levels. Illusory Walls with 2 extra steps. Whether you like it or not.
Responsiveness isn't the issue that makes the Lamp tedious and how bad its primitive combat integration is. But again, you're not one to get complicated concepts. The game also eats inputs like crazy, and of course you feel it's responsive, the enemy AI is primitive as fuck, and recovery times are almost non-existent.
Another difference between LOP's enemy encounters and LOTF's, is that LOP's actually ask something of the player. I'm really sorry that matching weapon blades and handles for a bigger number indicated by a green color so you know it's not worse as it would be indicated by a red color (a system LOTF devs were also far too incompetent to implement btw) is too complicated and requires so much of your rotted brain that you consider it micromanaging. God forbid you're asked to press buttons on both sides of the controller, and be required to pay attention to the enemies, and not be able to spam them with spells, or utterly damage-burst them anyway with middling investment. Hell, I've seen people do this to Calrath's Lightreaper with the parasite active for fucks sake. The closest thing in LOP to being that offensive are throwables. And as broken as they are, they're nothing compared to how throwables and magic work as an instant win in LOTF. Even with patches.
Also, when I talk about story analysis I care more about symbolism, themes, analogies, and sense, not about what Proper Noun 1 did some time in the history of the world.
Analysing weapon balance is important to keeping communities alive, but again, they cannot even figure a connection that's bad like Fromsoft's, they opted for something even worse with their absolute dogshit approach to connect players, so it doesn't matter anymore. They killed their game in the womb.
Like I said, the team is two games away from making a satisfying experience.
Your incompetence at Lies of P isn't an argument against it. And, at least LOP dignified itself by giving standard enemies alternate forms and extra attacks, and not just retexture them like they did in LOTF. And even the reused enemy types are given different attacks and behaviours than their first iteration. Unlike plastering a whole fucking level with shit tier bosses as enemies like LOTF does.
It also took them this long to be able to manage storage. Absolutely laughable.
And you implying Fromsoftware's stories are uninterpretable is the last nail on the coffin. Not only has the studio been repeating the same story and themes since before Miyasaki got to Demon's Souls, but the hidden and unknowable details that don't allow us to get the full picture because Fromsoft decides they didn't want to put it in, and as we saw with ER, actively made things more vague as the game builds went on, is something the devs for LOTF also do, even when they've given interviews about it. Only, unlike Fromsoft, I doubt they'll get the chance to flesh them out and have another go.
And no amount of patches will change the fundamental garbage on which the game is edified. A game where all enemies behave like DS2 mobs and I have the mobility and versatility of a DS3 character with more than ER versatility isn't satisfying.
The levels in LOTF are simply wider than LOP's, but as linear. LOP's levels loop on themselves as much or even more so than the vast Majority of LOTF's. The one difference in approach is that LOTF's world was designed with their original NG+ vision in mind, so they looped the levels back to the HUB, while in LOP they just do a big circle. You can argue that world design is better cause of that, but level design isn't really. They're on par at the most. Individual levels in LOTF don't really offer much aside from a handful of them.

I’m having fun playing it but there’s a lot of, I don’t know, tedium? Or annoyances. Everything just seems dark and hard to parse. Which vestige is which? Should I guard, parry, or block this boss? Have I been here before? Where am I going? I just feel like I’m in a haze in this game, whether it’s a menu screen, a boss fight, or exploring umbral. But it’s still pretty fun.

When I started this game, I did not like it's combat at all as it felt clunky and floaty as hell. Now 50 hours later, I am COMPLETELY in love with it! I guess this is just one of those games where it takes some time for your brain to orient to it's mechanics in order for you to truly appreciate it. Also, the co-op experience has been nothing but stellar so far (except for when there's a random netcode issue). I've been playing with a buddy of mine on Steam and honestly, the last time I had this much fun in co-op was Monster Hunter World which was released in 2018. Now I did play Remnant 2 as well (in co-op) but I found it to be very boring as there was hardly any challenge in the game outside of boss encounters. In fact this has been the case for EVERY co-op game that I've played since MHW so thank you Hexworks for making this incredible game and for relentlessly trying to fix it! I hope more players would give this game a second chance because this game really deserves it.

In which platform did you play? I just finished it on the ps5, all the way through the patches since release. I had a hard time enjoying it due the performance. The game stutters and eats inputs, not only on skipping cutscenes but also when dodging or attacking. There is also something odd going on with damage, maybe a cap to each hit or a scaler based on player level.. damage only felt right at the very end on bramis castle.

Oh that's a good question, and I should've mentioned it in my review! I played on PC, and the only time I had noticeable performance issues was when I first loaded the game and the day they temporarily disabled DLSS.
Yeah, I really hope they iron out these performance issues soon because it can be a pleasantly frustrating game when it runs smoothly.

For as much I enjoy this game there is a lot I wish was different. For the first that is at top of my list is I wish unique weapons you pick up were more unique, different move sets, special abilities, so forth and etc. I know there is a couple that do that and I like how those consume a soulflay charge when you use them. It should be more implemented. There could be more and we just have not seen them yet, due the fact that the ones that do have something unique have to be fully leveled to do such. Plus it just adds to the regular special move.
The numerous seed beds are an issue for me as well, honestly feels like they could have cut like a third of them and it would be much better. Most if not all boss rooms have a seed bed just outside of them so I feel like there is no need for one inside the room once you defeat the boss, or one pops up automatically when you win. Though I will say once you get stronger, farming umbral seeds is actually pretty easy. I feel like I am always full on my NG+1 characters.
I know one of the bigger complaints I have seen is bosses being reused as elites later on. That I don't care about as we see it a lot in games, par for the course I guess, but I wish these games little with these bosses when they put them in. For example, give them slightly different appearance, or give more flashy versions of the moves these elites have or a unique move that only they do. Make them feel like a leader/hero in that group of elites

It definitely had cool ideas but overall it's still unfinished when it comes to performance and bugs even after all the patches which is just ridiculous and unforgivable imo, it's also extremely unbalanced where the spells do way more damage than many weapons which is stupid. Co-op is barely playable cos of the constant lag and rubber banding from their awful servers and the lack of enemy variety and the game is way too easy.

Idk how i feel overall. Like there are some great parts in the game, some of the boss fights are a blast. But at the same time, the scaling is maddening. Like how is it that at the end of the game, enemies have end game health and deal end game damage, but only give mid game exp? There's no way I should be gettibg 250 vig from the dogs in Bramis Castle. I call bullshit. It really disincentivizes engaging with the combat and instead you just sprint past everyone. My other big gripe is that the red phatom fucking comes back! I would be completely ok if it was a one and done every time you entered umbral. Like you had to fight it at least once but after that you are free to roam. Because what ends up happening is that I don't play the game I'm just panicking trying to find a way to get back to axiom running through the level. Those are the two big things that really take away enjoyment for me. Like at the end, it felt like a chore to go through the castle and that's the opposite of how it should feel

I love the game, I've been playing for around 130 hrs and will keep playing for achievements. However, tbh, the devs are st**id in the way that they punish good players.... Perfect block still makes you take wither dmg???? 1st try bosses lock you out from side quests???? Besides, they still haven't fixed optimization. I can't believe I need to play with low setting and 30 fps every time I fight Hollow Crow due to its b*llsh*t effects which make the game crash.
End game online content is b*llsh*t as well... You farm like crazy and the rewards are not that good... So far I have full Inferno set, 2 pieces of Radiant set, and none of the Umbral set. They require so much effort with the laggy co-op/pvp but the armors are useless (well, Radiant set and Umbral set look cool, that's all)...

I personally really liked that many of the vestige seed beds were effectively traps. It made when and when not to plant a seed much more interesting. I’m also really confused how you didn’t struggle with the lack of vestiges in ng+. I found it’s made the game much more difficult and tense. I’ve got a feeling it’s got to do with you being in umberal much more than me and or dying more than me in order for you to collect that many seeds. I generally dated in axiom the majority of the time because it’s obviously much more dangerous in umberal. I found it weird that you criticised the game for disincentivising exploring in axiom. I think this is only true if you are going for all achievements.
I also find it weird that you say that it’s bad because it discourages exploration. Surely if your in ng+ you shouldn’t need to explore much because you should already have everything?
I also genuinely doubt the game devs expected you to do the umberal ending on ng+. I don’t know why you would even think about trying that. In general a lot of your criticisms only really make sense when going for all achievements. I definitely don’t think that aspect should really matter when thinking about the games general quality.
I also am very very against a save system in any souls like game. I like it requiring many playthroughs to complete quests. I feel like quests should be hard to finish and for them to be something only the people who play the game many times will see for the harder quests. Although currently the quests being broken makes this aspect feel way worse. However the main reason I’m against proper saves is how it would ruin any level of commitment or stakes to much of what you do. This is why the devs limit respec. If it wasn’t for pvp I personally think all of fromsofts games shouldn’t even have a respec option at all. I want for the levels you pick to matter. Oh btw wtf are you talking about with being surprised that the respec reverts your stats to the ones your class started with. That’s how it works in every single souls like ever and I’ve played the majority of the decent ones.
Sorry if this comes off as contrarian but I do just seem to disagree with a majority of the critiques.

Why would I struggle with lacking vestiges in ng+? You can still plant seeds on all of their sites. The real difficulty of the game in its level design is mitigated heavily by knowledge of the game imo. Removing vestiges doesn't increase difficulty. It just makes it less convenient to travel between areas.
      > I also find it weird that you say that it’s bad because it discourages exploration. Surely if your in ng+ you shouldn’t need to explore much because you should already have everything?
Players will have more things, yes, but there's still plenty to miss and re-examine in each area, and lacking the ability to travel between locations just becomes an unnecessary barrier toward further exploration. I wouldn't mind as much if there were more reasons to travel between areas or if enemies scaled differently depending on which areas are "cleared" first, but the route to end game progression being bottlenecked to Upper Calrath is kind of a buzzkill, though I do appreciate that some areas can be effectively "out of sequenced" in something like the Inferno ending.

Im 50+ hours in, and have 3 gripes.
    1. Lack of storage option.
    2. Forcing players to invest in radiance and inferno just to read lore on items.
    3. Severe over use of mini bosses as regular enemies.
These bosses are not tuned to fight properly outside of the arenas they're initally fought in.
Examples: rapturous huntress, the boss to start the Hollow sisters area, and carion knight sanisho. Having them pop up again so often, kills any story the character might have.

Lords is incredible. When I hear souls fans rip on it I can’t help but wonder what they even liked about Souls. Your roll/block dilemma is easy. Blocking is harder because a perfect block is far more rewarding than just rolling. Rolling is the safer option but will lengthen the fight because you won’t be chunking their posture.

What i like about Souls games?
The snappy and responsive movement and combat (omg, what's up with LotF's clanky lock-on system for example? Never had such problems in other souls games),
the variety of weapon move-sets, enemy variety in design and movesets (LotF has some cool designs but no variety and many of the bigger humanoid- type enemies have the same moveset with maybe some twist like a buff), a rich and deep story (can you tell me what LotF is even about? I mean is there a deeper meaning to all of this?)
These are just a few things that come to mind right now, that i like about fromsoft games and i didn't like about LotF.
I actually love the games fromsoft has made with Miyazaki! No exaggeration. LotF was like a 6/10 for me to put it in perspective.
And I'm not a "hater". I had really high hopes for the game. I wouldn't pay 70 bucks for a game to hate on it. I was genuinely disappointed and although i played about 90%, i didn't even care enough to finish the game yet. I'm happy for you, if you like the game. Great! But don't act as if it doesn't make sense to think it's mid at best, just because you like it that much.

@@praiseit6848 smoother and snappier than Elden Ring. Probably your settings led to a bad experience. I can tell you exactly what Lords story is all about and it’s better than any souls story. Up til I played it I didn’t think anything could replace From Souls for me, but I’ll easily pick Lords any day. I play it on Series X performance mode and looks and runs phenomenal. Enemy variety can get redundant but I’m old enough to be used to games doing this, some of the greatest games out there do it still, Zelda, Elden Ring are some examples, and combat is just hands down the best I’ve played in a souls game, the variety of ways to build and approach encounters passes anything From put out by far.

@@JonathanMarshallbonez We play on the same settings dude. I'm sorry, i don't know why it's so important for you that LotF is a better game than "any other fromsoft game" But that's just ridiculous. Laughable even. I mean, come on! The multiplayer can't even be called functioning. It's like giving someone a microwave dish and they say "oh yeah, much better than a steak from a restaurant!" From invented that sh*t and they're doing it for 10+ years. LotF is Hex's first game. It's very understandable that they wouldn't kill it first try. Maybe next time. PS: Would please be so kind and tell me what the story is all about? It doesn't have to be an essay. In a few sentences. What is the deeper meaning of it all?

I mean aren't all Soulslike devs trying to be like Fromsoft? There's only so much you can do with dark fantasy, not defending them for the subpar state the game released in, but at least I'm happy that they actually really tried; I have no doubts a sequel or whatever their new game is will become better and better
DeS had a lot of flaws at first, and they got ironed out with each new game

@Sohelanthropus They introduced a patch Friday that broke umbral on PS5. Every texture is flickering now. Its crazy stuff, lol.
I dunno, to me it feels like they tried From it without actually grasping anything more than the superficial aspects of it. I honestly felt the OG one had more soul in it, though I'm only closing in on the ending. Also, the voice acting and character creator are hot garbage. Does fine tuning work yet?
