Exactly. I considered it a lore minigame to see which places I recognized.
Like, Kalameet's boss arena later becomes the lake where we fight the hydra.
Elizabeth's sanctuary eventually turned into Sif's boss room.

Okay, Burnt Ivory King was an amazing boss. He's definitely in my personal top 10 list of favorite FromSoft bosses.
Eleum Loyce itself has a pretty good layout. I liked the golems, knights, soldiers, retainers, and ghosts. Plus, Mauldron is an absolute ICON of an invader NPC. I love Mauldron.
But Frigid Outskirts (particularly the reindeer), Lud & Zallen, the hedgehogs, and the lackluster weapon rewards were some major downsides. A lot of the weapons in Crown of the Ivory King genuinely sucked.
I only enjoy four things about Ivory King.
      1) Burnt Ivory King (and related "quests")
      2) Mauldron
      3) the amazing armor and fashion

I disagree that Dark Souls 3 doesn't have any major flaws. It does my favorite thing about the Souls games the worse, and that is exploration. Dark Souls 3 is too linear. It doesn't have those intricate shortcuts or paths that wrap back around to a previous area. Its mostly just a straight shot from beginning to end game, which I kind of hate.
I love it when it's possible to get lost in the world of these games and find myself asking "where the hell am I?" I like the sense of adventure and journey, and Dark Souls 3 really doesn’t do this for me. Even Dark Souls 2 does a better job at this. It's less linear, and it has sheer size going for it. There's way more possible instances where the player can be left wondering where the hell they are.

    • @whodatiscody
      @whodatiscody 5 месяцев назад +2

I agree, but I don't think any souls game fromsoft makes will ever truly return to the way you could get lost in ds1 since being able to warp from the start of the game became the norm in ds2. I mean look at ds3, I love it but having the first area you go to after the tutorial only be reachable by warping is kind of ridiculous. The first half of ds1 is really untouchable as far as that goes, unless from switches things up with their next game, but I can imagine they wouldn't want to alienate all the new fans who started with elden ring by taking such a big feature away. demons souls total lack of bonfires between the start and finish of an area gets somewhat close to it, I could really see them returning to that before removing warping for a portion of the game completely

@@Mbrace818 if you're in a dungeon maybe, but the game literally has a map that you can fast travel from. you can definitely get lost trying to find a site of grace but thats the same with finding bonfires in all the games. There has never been a souls game where you could get back to safety as easily as Elden Ring since you don't even need to make your way back to a bonfire, just pull up the map and dip. its like unlimited homeward bones but you have a map to look at so you can get right back to the place you were before without too much trouble.

    • @Mbrace818
      @Mbrace818 5 месяцев назад

@whodatismeishe When I say "getting lost" I don't necessarily mean literally getting lost and struggling to get back to some previous more familiar area. I simply mean the sense of stumbling across some obscure area that deviates from some main path and finding myself wondering where the hell I am.
Elden Ring is so vast, dense and expansive that it does the best job at this. The underground areas in particular invoke this feeling quite well. Yes, I can just Warp out of there, but the place still left me wondering "wtf is this place? Why is it here? Where does it lead to?"

The fact that you put an entire DLC over both Eleum Loyce and Shulva (both DLCs having so muvh personality and interesting stuff about them) just because of the final boss is kind of insane.
Yes, Frida is an amazing boss. Yes, you don't like DS2, but also-, putting the bosses SO over everything else is such a weird thing imo.
Same with the Ringed City. Gael is my favorite boss of the franchise, Midir is my favorite dragon fight, the Demon Prince is great too, I like the lore and the Ringed Knights are cool both in design and as enemies
But is it really deserving of the first place??? There are 2 swamps in the DLC, both full of annoying enemies which only purpose is to avoid you from exploring the zone (mainly referring to the angels, but the Ringed City archers are just as annoying kill you extremely fast). The Dreg Heap is literally just a corridor that if you want to explore you have to teleport back to the bonfire for every path you take, and the Ringed City is not that much bettee either, while also being full of ganks. It is definitely NOT the best DLC, but people just forget about all the problems of the DLC just because of the boss fights

Ashes is by far the worst of the DLCs, with its only redeeming factor being Sister Friede.
The runbacks in DS2 Gauntlet areas being "bad" is because those specific optional areas were designed for coop play first and foremost, hence the high enemy density.

I also cant remenber a single important weapon while Old Hunters has some of the best weapons in the entire game.
Also every area in the Old hunters represents extremelly important parts of Bloodborne lore, first area we find Ludwig and Laurence, Second all about Maria story 3rd about Mother kos Maria and Gherman Ds3 is pretty much just Gael.
    Music - Bloodborne Dlc
    Weapons - Bloodborne Dlc
    Lore - Bloodborne Dlc
Bosses - Maybe a tie but Blodborne has 1 more boss

Interesting. I'd rank 'em differently, but that's personal taste. Still, for the sake if discussion, here goes:
    1) Shadow of the Erdtree
    2) Old Hunters
    3) Artorias of the Abyss
    4) Crown of the Old Iron King
    5) Ringed City
    6) Crown of the Sunken King
    7) Crown of the Ivory King
    8) Ashes of Ariandel
I simply didn't like DS3 as a whole, on a game mechanic basis, and I won't specify why. This is why those DLCs are, admittedly, lower than where they should be on a purely impartial basis. I know I'm biased against them.
I can't say Eleum Loyce was my favorite, but I loved the spectacle of Burnt Ivory King enough that it's above Ashes of Ariandel. Otherwise, despite good level design in Eleum Loyce itself, the Frigid Outskirts and the lackluster weapons were terrible.
I loved the quality of Artorias of the Abyss. The level design, art design, and boss design was REALLY good, all the way through. Not a single bad point about it. Conversely to your experience, I also loved the King's Woods, as forested areas tend to be my favorite in most games. The fact that it was similar to the Darkroot Forest was actually a massive plus for me, as it was really neat to see what it was like in the past. Nothing was quite as cool as realizing that Kalameet's arena is where you fought the hydra in Darkroot Basin, or that Elizabeth's stonehenge sanctuary later became Sif's boss room, and so on. It was a good appetizer course in preparation for Oolacile.
    [HERE ON, BE ELDEN SPOILERS]
    [HERE ON, BE ELDEN SPOILERS]
    [HERE ON, BE ELDEN SPOILERS]
I loved Shadow of the Erdtree. I only have two gripes:
    1) the unexpectedness of "somewhere, a Great Rune shattered" skipping a few NPC quests. I missed Thiollier's and Moore's back and forth, and I didn't realize that answering Moore's question right away would suddenly move him to the end of the DLC. Pro tip, talk to Thiollier ASAP before exploring too far, and don't answer Moore's question until right after Messmer. Speaking of, there's four NPCs whose questline progression must be done before (or for Hornsent, DURING Messmer). I wish the "Great Rune shattering" and Moore's progression was a little bit more explicit/hinted because I thought I was safe to explore every side path before doing legacy dungeons or even meeting every NPC. I was not.
    2) the final boss of the DLC genuinely sucked. It's a travesty to have a DLC completely full of absolutely amazing bosses, only for the last one to be a genuinely terrible experience. It leaves on a horribly sour note. Literally every boss was either amazing or at least moderately good, and then we had... and then there was [redacted]. That was a genuinely disgustingly bad fight.
2.5) Further, in regards to lore, NPC quests hinted at the final DLC boss's identity earlier on, even a few times, and to be real, I also wish that it just... wasn't who it ended up being. I wish we finally got to see Godwyn the Golden or the Gloam-Eyed Queen, and we got neither. That also sucked. Fuck, I really wish Miquella had taken more of an interactive NPC role, instead of being basically non-existent until the very end. That sucked too.
Genuinely loved everything else about Shadow of the Erdtree. Messmer, Midra, and Metyr might also be my favorite boss fights that FromSoft made.
The lore was also pretty darn good, especially for Marika and Messmer - although everything involving Miquella was rather lackluster.

Funny how you put the Hunter's Nightmare as a downside to Old Hunters, since I actually consider it a highlight.
For me, seeing this alternate version of Cathedral Ward was incredibly cool and interesting, both from a story and visual perspective. The same also applies to Artorias of the Abyss, though to a much lesser extent there. I really love seeing and comparing the contrast between the two areas and pondering why and how they are different in those ways, not to mention just the nostalgia aspect of seeing a new side of something you're familiar with.
I guess most people dislike "reused" things by default, but I never found them to be a problem. Maybe it's just me, but even the many repeated enemies in Elden Ring or Lords of the Fallen were never a negative, and some reuses like these areas in the dlc, Loretta and even Crucible Knights and Pursuers are just a straight positive.

Dark Souls 3 had no major flaws.. We 've heard that. All other games up to that were INNOVATIVE and introduced something TRULY new (even if some of these innovations were not to everyone's liking), while DS3 did none of that. DS3 has the most and more serious flaws:
-Uninspired Lore. Everything just a fan service looking back to DS1.
-The worst level design. Everything is linear and boring.
-The worst atmosphere. Almost every area has the same colour palette with these dark blue filters, and it's full of reused Bloodborne assets (why so many tombstones with no real purpose).
-Uninspired gameplay. R1 spam fest everywhere. It can be FUN, especially if this is your first game, because it's faster and feels more fluid, but it is uninspired.
    - Boring weapons and spells. Everyone agrees that if DS2 did something right was Dueling and the original weapons and spells and NG+. Everything was dumbed down once again. From weapons, to spells, to infusion system, to buffing etc.
    -Terrible balance.
-Boring NG+. Why not keep something like that?
The only things that DS3 actually did good was Bosses. The more extended moveset of the weapons was nice, but not in expense of the more interesting weapons, power stance, counter damage modifiers, several weak and strong points on the weapons and generally all the good innovations that DS2 made and had no reason to let go.
DS2 did a lot of questionable things. But it introduced also a lot of mechanics and system that were universally embraced as GOOD. I cannot accept that DS3 took a huge step back and simplified the game way too much by disregarding almost everything good. When we were waiting for DS3 to come out with Miyazaki as the lead, we were excited because we truly wanted to see what he can do with all these concepts, and to re introduce them in a more polished manner. But it did none of that. All we got was a faster DS1 with some impressive bosses, but worse at everything else.

one of the things im maddest about is how DS2 is still the only souls game with good backsteps, backsteps in every other fromsoft game are an useless move only used for skip setups and stuff like no left stick, but in DS2 backsteps were super fast, consumed very little stamina and had a couple s, basically being a superior roll in all ways...exept being way tighter in timing, which I don't need to explain why it was amazing, in general I come back to DS2 the most out of the trilogy due to its amazing balance(to this day the only game where poison is trully viable, or miracles, etc), options of traversing, unique movesets and weapon concepts, varied level design, etc, id personally say DS2 has better bosses then DS1, people often forget how simplistic and often times bad DS1 bosses were with the a couple notable exeptions, and when DS1 had bad bosses they were insanely awful and mandatory, DS2 does have stinkers, but all stinkers are completely optional and often give nothing good(lud and zallen literally give nothing of note, bed of chaos is required to beat the game), DS2 imo also has more memorable and unique bosses, DS1 outside the DLC has 4 bosses id consider good, gwyn, queelag, ornstein and smough and four kings.
DS3's bosses are phenomenal, by far the best bosses in the trilogy, but the issue is that its just that, areas are so easy to run through while enemies are often very overtuned in areas like irithyl, that playing the game is a worse experience then just running, picking up items needed, and heading to the next boss, its fun to go on a boss killing spree, but idk, it feels like thats all that dS3 is, which is insanely bad when you consider the pricing, DS1 and DS2, with dlc's included, is 40$, and gives a ton more value then DS3, meanwhile DS3 is 90 including dlc, 90 fucking dollars, and is it worth it at all? the bosses are amazing, gael imo being the best boss fight ive ever fought, so yeah, but compared to DS1 and DS2 its teribly overpriced.

-its a a sequel of course itll have a continuation of lore to the first game
-it is a bit too linear but there are still a handful of areas you can completely miss because you didnt explore enough
-id argue it has a better atmosphere than the first two games, you can sense the doom and gloom that has overset the world and while it is abundant i think calling the atmosphere on its own boring is a bit silly
-you control the weapons you use and the buttons you press
-i admittedly dont use any spells because i find the gameplay boring but off the top of my head i could name more memorable ds3 weapons than ds2 weapons. ds2 was plagued with a lot of pretty mediocre boring weapons imo
-every soulsborne game has bad balance. if youre talking about pve then refer to point 4. if you're talking about pvp them thats pvp.
      -i agree with you there

Agreed with most of your takes but I think the arguments made for the first pick aren’t strong. I think the boss quality between Bloodborne and DS3 is comparable (think of weaker bosses like Curse-Rotted Greatwood, Crystal Sage, Wolnir, Yhorm), and I actually think Bloodborne has far more consistent level design quality. But regardless, I disagree with the approach of considering how each DLC “elevates” the base game, since I find it more relevant comparing the DLCs by the actual content they contain. It just kinda felt like you were finding an excuse to elevate it over Old Hunters by not making an argument about the content of the DLCs themselves. Regardless, good video tho, cant argue too much since Ringed City is comparable with Old Hunters, as you mention yourself

DS3 has more top tier bosses in it's base game than BB does .
Lets not count the DLCS just the base game .
DS3 just has an overall higher boss quality , BB excels more in other areas overall than DS3 but bosses DS3 just wins hands down despite having a few stinkers , every game has some lame bosses .
There are 3 bosses for that would be A tier in BB for me - Father Gascoigne , Martyr Logarius and Gehrman . 2 B tier bosses - Ebrietas and Vicar Amelia . Everything else would be C tier or lower , that is BB's biggest weakness in it's base game the bosses .
DS3 on the other hand - A tier -Abyss Watchers , Pontiff Sulyvahn , Dancer of the Boreal Valley , Champion Gundyr , Twin Princes , Nameless King , Soul of Cinder , 2 B tier bosses - Aldritch and Dragonslayer Armor , the others are C tier of worse .
BB overall as a game is the better and more original experience but the bosses DS3 takes it hands down .
The Old Hunters has 3 fantastic bosses , 1 good one and 1 bad one , it makes BB so much better as a game because you get 3 fantastic fights .
Ringed City also has 3 fantastic bosses with 1 bad one so it evens it out .
Its hard for me to imagine with or without the DLC that BB has better quality bosses as a whole than DS3 as a whole , it just flat out doesn't .
This is why DS3 is more fun to replay because of the sheer amount of high quality bosses compared to BB .

The cringe of seeing somebody say how annoying the runback of Sir Alonne is while not using the phantoms. "oH bUt ThEn..." no, the phantoms are there for a reason. If you can't identify a tool then you are just bad at the game.

now I haven't played ds2 dlc cause everytime I do play ds2 I get frustrated and want to throw the disc out and set it on fire due to how annoying it is and I haven't played ds1 dlc since I'm dreading the last half but the other 3 I have beaten so although it's more of a top 3 it will change whenever I decide to not become a vampire and thrust a stake into my heart imbedded in garlic
    3. ashes of ariandel. decent design with only great thing being sister friede(favorite boss in souls) and the other boss while I don't think is great, I also don't think it's bad
    2. lost city. oh boy am I gonna get hate for this one. personally, I hate the area of the city, I'd probably like it more if there weren't dozens of arrows coming my way and angels shooting holy arrows (yes i do know you can kill the angels but its more worth just running). then the area is just bland like an unseasoned steak, but bosses are killer. you got twin princes (my favorite lost city boss), midir, and gael, hot take gael overrated and if halflight didn't have that summon he wouldn't be nearly as hated on as he is (still a meh fight with boring dialogue in the beginning).
    1. old hunters. just recently beat this and my god is it wonderful. ludwig easily took me over 100 attempts with me being level 50 with a +7 whirligig and going up the tower, while annoying, was disturbing which is why we all love bloodborne. Orphan and maria were also amazing being some of the top bosses in souls (and probably gaming) with maria not taking me as long as orphan (again probably over 100 while also playing with my uncle). then Laurence which was pretty fun, ik a lot of people hate the tantrum attack but for me I just looped in a J formation and it worked fine and not locking on during 1st phase also helped.
while this was a basic b list idc because at the end of the day I had fun and loved taking down these bosses and exploring areas and I hope elden ring shadow of the erdtree will take my number one

"This DLC [Artorias of the Abyss] gives me a reason to not debate quitting when I have gained the ability to warp."
Personally, the DLC gives me a reason to play the DLC. In my two most recent DS1 playthroughs, I did the DLC immediately after receiving the Lordvessel, and then stopped. Most of the rest of DS1's second half sucks, and after beating Manus and Kalameet you have already beaten the game's hardest bosses and should have your build mostly complete, so there's really not a whole lot left to do but beat the game.

Showing Lords of the Fallen as a bad example is kinda unfair. Yes the starting class did cost extra, but apart from the necessity to deliver over 30 patches to make it a good game, the delivered the Randomizer mod, new classes, new quests and items and most recently a boss rush mode at absolutely no cost. So everyone how went away from the game, because it was so annoying, go back, you’ll have a totally now experience, then one everybody hoped for
