Another pro is the music by itself. And the dlc elevated it even more.
"Ahhhhh you were by my side all along......my guiding moonlight"
*HORNS*
"THIS IS AWESOME!!!!" *dies*
You forgot the soundtrack, it's the best in Fromsoft business.
Can't agree with you, sir, DS3 and Sekiro have pretty cool soundtrack too. Though DS1 is without doubt has the shittiest.
You're right. I made a mental note to include "sound design" in my Pros list at one point, and completely forgot about it.
@@littlenimrod3373 yeah but BB has the best ones. I never said the other titles had bad scores.
What sucks about bloodborne is the 30Fps that Sony refuses to improve
I was really hoping for a PS5 update to 60 FPS
A piece of art. A timeless masterpiece. A gift from gods!
Bloodborne is easily my favourite PS4 game, though I'm hoping for a PC port to come some time soon given Sony's recent trend. The only three things that let it down are 1. Blood gem grinding, 2. The necessity of PS+ for access to chalice dungeons needed to do so, and 3. No respec option. I don't think the blood vial system is much of a downside as it's easy enough to farm for them. I also love how blood vials are parriable. There was originally meant to be a respec option with the mirror in the hunters dream, I have no idea why they cut it. The PvP in Bloodborne is highly underrated, the only thing that lets it down is the damn net-coding which can lead to incredibly janky duels at times. The only other thing which may be a downside to some is the lack of a deep, meaningful covenant system to incentivise invading, co-op etc.
you don't need psplus for chalice dungeons. only for the ones others have shared.
@@spectre722 your reading and comprehension needs work. OP said the PS+ that is required for chalice dungeons necessary to grind blood gems. You do need PS+ if you want to feasibly grind for gems
I'd say that the vagueness is a double-edged sword. It can be frustrating, leading some players to bounce off of it, but it can also worm its way into your mind and pull you in to find every ounce of cryptic information it contains.
I think your own channel shows how powerful that second option is. ;)
I’ve installed and deleted Bloodborne at least three times before finally completing and platting this game. It takes a lot out of you, but it’s amazing! It made me start playing the Dark Souls series.
Love the in-depth review, but 8/10 post DLC? 9.5 with the limited drawbacks IMO.
One of the best things about Bloodborne? Your ability to buy stuff is consistent through all future NGs and not dependant on bs npc quests like ds.
My only real gripes are not being able to respec and change appearance. I would also have liked more stuff to do in the chalice dungeons.
Bloodborne is one of the few games I would consider a work of art.
I think BB would have been improved by making enlightenment a non-spendable value. I’d argue that it makes more sense if it was more of an unalterable stat (like the dark sigils in DS3), since it represents the character’s deepening understanding about their situation. It seems odd that you can forget things in exchange items or help.
"Firearms aren't as effective as one may expect."
I mean, we're using bullets made out of mercury.
They're probably liquefying mid flight. The various denizens of Yharnam are just surprised at getting splashed with mercury more so than taking any actual damage.
Bloodtinge builds are just surprising your enemy to death.
In more seriousness, I'm surprised chalice dungeons didn't play a bigger role in this critique.
The fact that they don't scale to NG+ and that going through all of them as soon as possible makes you so OP that it trivializes the remaining game and NG+ always struck me as some pretty big negatives.
They're not even really optional. Yes, you can hit the end credits without ever stepping foot into them. But there are a lot of things you can avoid doing and still reach the credits. It's not a great metric for defining what is and isn't optional.
If your goal is to fight new monsters and bosses, to squeeze out every last drop of lore, to explore every nook and cranny of the game's world or (Koz help you) if you're some kind of completionist, chalice dungeons are mandatory.
I'd actually still agree with the 8/10 though. If chalice dungeons were implemented more thoughtfully I'd give the game a 9/10.
I absolutely love the game and the only reason it's not a 10/10 is that it's very insular in its themes. Where I spend a lot of time reflecting on the themes of Dark Souls 1-3, I think about Bloodborne and go "That was neat." Bloodborne just doesn't have the same impact. It's treading a lot of territory I was already familiar with long before the game ever existed.
If there's ever a Bloodborne 2, I might revise my opinion.
I love your Channel, you've made me retrospectively enjoy the game much more through your videos, and I'm especially grateful for that.
but i have to say, this is one of the most basic bloodborne reviews I must've seen,
if i hadn't played the game myself I'd be driven to think it was a generic action game with a victorian aesthetic, you didn't really make a solid attempt to sell the game to those who haven't played it already, and the part where you listed pros and cons was too "objective" or in other words "soulless"
as if you were reviewing a profuct from some company, rather than the magical one of a kind experience that bloodborne truly is, and hell, you probably love the game more than i do since bb didn't click with me like the other games in the series did
i know you're passionate about this game, your body of work clearly shows that, but i just didn't detect that passion in this review
Vague story that we have to dig elsewhere for, restrictive item system, need to get good, inability to rearrange stats once committed... Isn’t this what From games are beloved for?
I personally disagree with a lot of the points you paint as negatives that could or should be changed.
But its still awesome that people are talking about this masterpiece.
Big agree on the score and your critique of the game. One thing I want to add is a big issue with FromSoft in general, and bloodborne specifically: How obtuse the game’s mechanics are. The game is very inaccessible when taken in a vacuum - it does not explain and tutorialize itself well at all. The only reason I knew about weapon transformations being effective as they are is because I watched speed runs. The reason I knew what bloodtinge or skill do is because I read a wiki. The reason I understood how bolt paper worked is because I watched Vaatividya. FromSoft games aren’t very difficult, they are just perceived to be because they seemingly go out of their way to obscure how they work.
Without a doubt the best game ever made in my opinion.
Have you played games before?
@@tomgnyc Yeah! the Sims Bustin Out.
Everyone knows Farmville is the best game ever.
@@tomgnyc Now I understand why you don't rate Bloodborne.
@@DaddyRedBoneXii Nah, I actually really like it. But best game ever?? That's a bold statement. To each their own I guess.
Personal input from me: Despite LP's criticism of Bloodborne's handling of consumables and resources, (which _is_ fair, tbh,) nothing in the game is in any at all way insurmountable. Case in point, I am a complete casual scrub who has problems even when it comes to games with far more responsive controls, like Devil May Cry, because I have a tendency to button-mash. Yet despite being such a casual scrub, I've beaten Bloodborne many times by now. The first run was rough, sure, but I was very seldom wonting for resources... of course, that may have something to do with me being stingy with my consumables -- I almost never use elixirs in Final Fantasy because, hey, what if I'll have to use them against a really hard boss down the line, right?
I absolutely love this game and agree with you on it's pro's and con's, but I find myself going back to play Dark Souls 3 more often because of the con's that you mentioned. The music from the game is the most eerily beautiful music that I have ever heard in any video game.
tbh I agree with the point about respeccing. When I first made my build I decided to go for a Skill-centered one since I feared that Strenght build would be too "Dark-Soulsy" and I wanted to try something else. Once I progressed through the story and DLC I realized that most great weapons that really define Bloodborne's design philosophy (Chikage, Whirligig Saw, Boom Hammer, Kirkhammer, etc) were either Strenght-based or made the player invest in Bloodtinge, a stat which doesnt really do much on the early game.
I wished I knew about this game early on. I’m currently playing BB for the first time and damn, one of the best games I’ve played. The environment, lore, gameplay… everything is awesome. Its challenging for sure but it is what makes this game solid.
I think it makes sense that the prices for blood vials go up as the night progresses. Supply and demand.
The atmosphere is amazing
I think that the best way to tell an experienced player over a newer character is less the use of rally a weapon and more the proficiency with firearms and visceral attacks or a crafty way around that process like beast mode whirligig 2h L2 walk with crazy stacking damage
PLEASE God just give us bloodborne on pc
It's between this and sekiro for my favorite fromsoftware game. I like the story and lore for Bloodborne more but the combat a little more in sekiro
Definitely game of the decade
Just announce the fucking 60fps remaster allready.
Great review man!
All but 2 of the con list read as "Game's too hard!". I think they did that on purpose. The game is about evolution. They want you to fight until you become like a beast. One of the most satisfying parts of the game for me was that point when I realized that I had gone from the hunted, to the hunter. The farming is part of the lore. The blood is in the enemies, and you have to git gud and take it from them. You may not like it, but it isn't really a flaw.
Also, I think the cryptic nature of the lore is part of the Lovecraftian horror. You're kinda supposed to be in the dark. The dark is scarier.
The load screens are definitely a flaw though. We REALLY need a PC port already.
Only con I would have added is the lack of karts
“Story is bare-boned” oh no…
In my opinion it's the best game I've ever played on the PlayStation 4. As a person who loves gaming aesthetics, I really like the Gothic style environments, weapons, atmosphere and the storyline. I recently started NG+ and finished most of the main story. The only downsides are some of the gameplay aspects like you mentioned.
That was my Problem with bloodviles coming from DS1 and onl having a limited time with Bloodborn because I don't have a PS4 and borrowed it.
I got killed by the clearic beast before the couple last hits. And used all or nearly all my blood viles. So I needed to farm them and it was just tedious. Having like 2 or so refill would be more enjoyable because if you died while farming you either used one before so you could farm more of the area or accepted defeat and tedium begann again
Your cadence reminds me of Chef John from Food Wishes.
I agree with pretty much everything stated, although I don't think the cons bring down the game to much. 10/10 game's don't exist, but personal opinion matters the most. For instance I love this game, it's my favourite so I will give it a 10/10 but, thinking about it logically a 9/10 suites it better
Thank you for this review. I adore this channel and think your highly underrated in the Soulsborne community, hopefully you will gain more recognition for your talents in the future. Have a good day
Your passion for the game is inspiring to see!
Sekiro was better than blood borne to me at least in terms of gameplay...the atmosphere in bloodborne was amazing at some points
Would you not advise for this to be my first Souls game? I would like to start with this but would love an opinion as I’ve never played a Souls game
I think this is a great "first" Souls game, but I recommend playing Dark Souls 1 first. If DS1 feels too slow or cumbersome, then BB might be better for you
@@LastProtagonist thank you so much for your input!
Can you disable health bars?
Saw cleaver for life!
For me it's up there along side with Silent Hill 2 , and that's saying a lot
I just platinum trophied the base game. Still have to do the DLC. I will never play this game again. Not because it's not good but because it may be the most frustrating game I've ever played. I play games to relax, Bloodborne does the opposite
Then don't play the DLC as the difficulty spike is too much.
@@vinodchhabria8738 na, im a glutton for punishment 🤣. Don't get me wrong, until I played Darksouls 3. Bloodborne was one of my favorite games of all time
Item economy put me off the game for the longest time, that and trying to play a dex build on my first playthrough (god the cane was rubbish early game), taking breaks from boss attempts to go farm vials and bullets is just not fun in the slightest and it really soured me on the game.
Eventually came back and finished it a few years later but yeah kind of annoying after From had learned from Demon's Souls and improved on grass with Dark Soul's estus flask system and then took a step back again for Bloodborne's vials
Bloodborne was my first fromsoft game and no other game gave me the same experience, not even sekiro. Pity a major bulk of the lore was lost in translation and it was way too cryptic. Had to youtube lore videos after my first playthrough.
10/10 game for me.
Cool review! You didn't mention saved edited dungeons glyphs tho. These let you put glyphs in for false story dungeons, false depth dungeons, and gem edited dungeons. These let you do cool things like skip story chalices, get weapons like the burial blade early, and farm for blood gems WAY easier.
It would also be nice to mention edited dungeons traps. If you search for a dungeon and go inside one with ?menutext? Or ?playername? Dungeons you can end up in a chalice dungeon with no way out, destroying the character.
It's because these glyphs are essentially exploits that require PS+ to use. They're not part of the base game, and I wanted to keep this as relatively spoiler-free as I could.
@@LastProtagonist that makes sense. It does suck that you kind of require Playstation plus to use saved edited dungeons.
I've been playing recently and I haven't touched my ps4 in YEARS. Moved on to pc a while ago. Having to pay for ps plus was actually jarring when I went to play again, lol.
Let's hope a PC version happens sometime between now and the end of time.
Are you sure that not all items can obtained through root chalices offline? I heard it's possible, but it takes too long, which still sucks, but it's still possible from what I head or understand.
Items like certain gems and the Ring of Betrothal only appear in Roots and you need to have network access to create Root Chalices
@@LastProtagonist I can confirm that the ring can be obtained offline. I have it. :) However, it took me multiple playthroughs in the depth 5 chalice (I'd say at least 10 times or more). The best blood gem I got so far is the 26% damage one; not 27% (still trying). But I agree that this should be considered a flaw as being online has a clear advantage in the sense that it doesn't take ridiculously long and considering that this is an offline focused game, it's a bit disappointing. I shouldn't have to grind this much to obtain certain items.
Yes
Another con for , is that the great ones bosses in the main game didn't live up to the hype tbh
One could make the argument that's intended to be thematically relevant.
@@LastProtagonist Maybe that the case , but I ve always thought that the lovecraftiam horror are supposed to be being that induce insanity and terror from their mere presence , in bloodborne the ones that are good to fight don't have a solid presentation , and the reverse is true
Great review.
Arcane helps with items, and gives you some variability with builds. With 20 arcane a few farming runs will give you excess.items you can sell for echoes for leveling, or purchasing different items. There are only two problems with this. A player probably isn't going to know this on their first playthrough, and it's slow to sell all those items because depending on the item they're all hanging out in your storage. If the game allowed you to sell the storage of those items I think this would have also improved the game. Like running back, and forth to get pebbles out of storage isn't very fun.
You fiend!
Fair review, fair rating, tho I can't agree that starting area is the best. All of them are unique and beatiful in their own way (except for, of course, Nightmare fucking frontier and forbidden fucking woods, I hate them with all my heart. Strangely, this makes them even more unique then others).
BB is the best From game for me. Even after the Master piece of Elden Ring. BB is the only game i have ever platinumed.
Games of the decade without a doubt are DaS (PC non-remaster) and Pathologic 2.
BB is a must play despite not being quite masterpiece level imo. It's the best FROM game post-DaS though that's for sure.
I think DaS was perfect until anor londo.
I really meant PERFECT.
That map design is something else.
@@jonnymario771 A lot of my favourite levels are post-Anor Londo (like Painted World).
The way the world is laid out is a strong point for DaS definitely, but it's not the only thing it has going for it that I like more than the games after it.
@@W1ndF4lc0n The levels are gorgeous, but that interconnectivity is outstanding imo.
The comment about chalice dungeons being repetitive but “thankfully they didn’t try to force them down our throats in future titles” hasn’t aged well 😅 See nearly every side dungeon in Elden Ring 😣
This guy is the Food Wishes of game reviews.
I give Bloodborne a 10/10. Some of the things you see as cons are intentional design choices, because Fromsoftware games almost always assume that the players playing them are of high intellect and observant. What you refer to as, "Too Cryptic" is actually, "Purposefully Mysterious." i.e. Part of the fun comes from figuring things out by testing them out for yourself.
As far as the lore goes, even if it were far more concrete there would still be disagreements about it, due to different perceptions.
Anyway, I find no fault with your review, but I do feel as if some of the cons list is a bit forced to present more objectivity.
Being able to save scum souls games would ruin them, that's why autosave only
Not on pc. 0/10
:(
Sekiro is better than bloodborne imo.
Uh nope... Dark souls 1 is a lot better, and even then that would still be miles behind being the best game of the decade.
Git gud
My biggest issue with bloodborne is that every area after vicar amelia sucks major ass , none of them where interesting or fun or even challenging to me even the "best" area in the game cainhurst castle which outside of it's lore and awesome boss fight at the end felt incredibly boring and dull , it's the dlc that really took bloodborne from a being very good into one of my favorite games ever
Idk, the nightmare areas are cool, and yahar' gul looks really nice, despite it being mostly a corridor. I didn' t like the forbidden woods tho, too much stuff in it that isn' t really clearified or justified, like the giant tombs, and the area being forbidden but still filled with yahrnamatise
@@theragebringer4424 the nightmare realms are the worst actually especially the nightmare of mensis because for a final area it felt really underwhelming and easy , the unseen village had a great atmosphere with the pale moon and laser shooting amygdalas but the enemies are boring , I,m not sure how I feel about the forbidden snakes the only thing I,m sure about is that I got lost ALOT because everything looked fucking the same
Yharnam and cathedral ward were too great for their own good , the lack of good areas and enemy varieties is the only thing keeping me from loving bloodborne as much as ds3 and sekiro
You’re tripping
