    Ok, so on the subject of Rom and when she becomes a thing. My personal, in no way backed up by any evidence fan theory is that she happens really early. Like pre-Healing Church early. Laurence had some impetus to abandon Willem and form the Church. To turn to Blood Ministration even when Willem feared the Old Blood enough to make it his cardinal adage. I think Rom was that impetus. I think Willem succeeded in finding a way to put eyes on the inside, creating Rom. But when she didn't possess any inhuman knowledge to act as the catalyst to evolve mankind to the next stage, and in fact was stupid, Laurence lost faith in Willem's approach. We did it your way and we got nowhere, more or less. And so Laurence breaks away on his own.

    • @CptSnuggles07
      @CptSnuggles07 2 года назад +49

      Rom is a required boss in the Labyrinth, which makes me feel strongly that she's a Pthumerian who ascended to become Kin, like Ebrietas. Could be a friend or even a failed child of Ebrietas, given Ebrietas' attitude towards the dead spider at the Altar of Despair. I think Byrgenwerth found Rom's vacuous physical body in the Labyrinth and Willem used the Orphan's Cord to ascend her consciousness to the Dreamlands at the Moonside Lake. All that would mean that she "became a thing" a very long time ago, but didn't gain eyes on the inside until after the departure of Laurence and the raid on the Fishing Hamlet. Controversial opinion, I know, but I really think Rom was originally a Pthumerian, not a Byrgenwerth scholar.

    • @r.9451
      @r.9451 2 года назад +20

      @@CptSnuggles07 Yeah. I think there's maybe an earlier version of the narrative where she was a Byrgenwerth creation, but based on the Altar of Despair design with its connection to Isz, I think it's indicated she's more closely associated with the Pthumerians.
      I think that the "secret" of Willem's that relates to the lake is not Rom herself, but the way of communing with her.

    • @simoneartini3302
      @simoneartini3302 2 года назад +1

      @@CptSnuggles07 but I think a description clearly states that she is a scholar of Byrgenwerth. In my opinion she was turned into a Great One in order to stop Mensis ritual and hide the Blood moon. Why wasn't she covering the Blood moon at the time of the burning of Yarham otherwise?

    • @CptSnuggles07
      @CptSnuggles07 2 года назад +13

      @@simoneartini3302 There aren't any canon descriptions that refer to Rom as a Byrgenwerth scholar. The only thing we have to go on is Micolash screeching about how Kos gave her eyes. I think everyone agrees that that means Willem used the Orphan's Cord to "improve" Rom somehow and place her consciousness in the Dreamlands at the Moonside Lake, with the goal of shielding the waking world from the Mensis ritual. Everyone also agrees that she's Kin, i.e. an artificial Great One. The question is, when was she created? Like I said in my original post, I think the evidence points to her being created by the Pthumerians; Willem just found her in the Labyrinth and tinkered with her to create the Moonside Lake barrier. I think her presence in the Labyrinth, and the corpse at the Altar of Despair, make it really unlikely that Rom is from the "modern" era.

    What I want to know is the amount of time that passes between the establishment of Bergenwerth and the arrival of the player. The amount of decay in the waking world suggests decades passing, but the amount of religious buildings and iconography would take hundreds of years to accomplish. So was Yharnham already a megacity by the time Lawrence became the First Vicar or did the original hunters and prospectors have increased lifespans from blood ministration?

    Ludwig finding the moon light greatsword in the tombs and possibly it even being a relic of the tombarians makes tons of sense since the moonlight greatsword has always used sorcery/ magic/ arcane and that's exactly what's driving people mad in the tombs/ grand archives and why the hunters are all doing heroin er i mean taking sedatives in order to push through. For some reason the moonlight greatsword and it's presumed induction of insanity is what pulls ludwig out of rape horse mode however i suppose having that thing to study that always peaks his interest and perplexes him and fights though his basest beastial desires does make sense.

    Personally I think that after Gehrman retired and the old hunters dissapeared, Otto took over the hunters workshop and became a weapon/hunter outfit dealer for the common Yharnamites. And later when Djura took over, he trained new hunters in the powderkeg style. The charred hunter set looks a lot like the old hunters one.

    The one thing I think doesn't add up here is that the attack on Kos / the creation of the Hunter's Nightmare / Maria leaving should be much later. First, Maria's Research Hall is researching contact with Ebrietas, implying that the Church has already started exploring Isz (which we know was after their split from Byrgenwerth) and has at least met some of her Celestial Kin, even if they may not have encountered Ebrietas personally yet. Second, Ludwig being trapped in the Hunter's Nightmare implies that he was part of the attack on Kos. Lastly, Gehrman is affected by the Hunter's Nightmare but he's not totally trapped in it - this is likely because he'd already made contact with the Moon Presence alongside Laurence, and being bound to the Hunter's Dream keeps him from being fully trapped by the curse of Kos, although the doll lets us know he was affected by it.

      @@alack3879that may be true, but we must also remember
      When we see Ludwig, one of his beastly traits is that he has a maw with eyes lined inside. It is said that Willelm sent hunters to the fishing hamlet to carve out the villager's skulls open, and search their brains for 'eyes on the inside'. And then we have Ludwig, being punished by literally having a head with 'eyes on the inside'.
      Seeing how blatant it is that the Nightmare punishes its residents by physically manifesting their sins, and how Ludwig's mouth and the Fishing Hamlet have the same colour scheme, There's no way its a coincidence.
      Ludwig had to be involved in the Fishing Hamlet.

    that they used the blood to counter the frenzy and thereby discovered its healing affects actually makes so much sense. storywise if youre suffering from madness inflicted by a higher source then trying to elevate yourself to that status, or get a bit closer at least, should end the effects or make them more bearable. so them infusing blood to become stronger or closer/more similar to that source that that caused it and doesnt suffer from the effects itself is actually logical. it also answers my long standing question of "who the fuck would find old blood in tunnels and go 'lets try consuming it'"

    My thoughts about the 'forbidden blood' of Cainhurst:
    In one of the descriptions (i don't remember of what item) Cainhurst nobles are described as 'old imbibers of blood', with that suggesting that they were using blood first (also the gargoyles are 'the lost children of antiquity'). The whole story of the scholar that betrayed the Healing Church is... just a lie. A lie that the Healing Church tells because Cainhurst and the church are bitter enemies. Cainhurst nobles are probably descendants of Pthumerians*, so they just were doing what always had been doing.
    *probably Pthumerians mixed with humans.
    To support this:
    1) Immortal Pale Queen with no consort
    2) Queen that is expected to give birth a 'child of blood'
    3) Bloodlickers are only present in the chalice dungeons and in Cainhurst, so very probably there is funtional gate to the dungeons nearby the castle, hinted in the snowy cliffs before entering the main castle, where you can find lots of Bloodlickers and maggots (maggots only present here, in the dungeons, and in the poison lake in the forbidden woods, that is very likely another entrance to the dungeons, poison lakes only exists here and in the dungeons)

    • @juanausensi499
      @juanausensi499 2 года назад +14

      @@Xgenstudioz777 According to Alfred, you're right. But the known events maybe tell us a different story. For starters, it's the church who has a grudge with Cainhurst, not Byrgenwerth. It's the church who massacred Cainhurst. Willem seemed pretty chill with defectors (like Laurence).
      My pet theory is that almost everything that come from the church is pretty much bull*t. Not only fits with their methods, but also it's the only way to have some consistency in Bloodborne's convoluted history.
      From Willem we know there was at least one defector before Laurence. I don't think it was Gerhman, i'm thinking more of a madman with a curious taste in headwear. But we can't know for sure if he robbed anything or gave anything to Cainhurst. That part is very hard to believe and i think it's just a fabrication.
      The church wanted (and obtained) absolute power over Yharnam, and that implied the destruction of the previous rulers (the nobles of Cainhurst). The tale of the thief of the forbidden blood was just the excuse they needed. They based the lie on the real defection of a scholar (showing a insane amount of hypochrisy considering the church was also founded by a defector of Byrgenwerth)

    • @mysteryperson706
      @mysteryperson706 2 года назад +4

      It's my belief that there is no Ashen Blood, or rather Ashen Blood is just the natural consequence of imbibing too much blood. The cure for the Ashen Blood is the Antidote. But if it was a disease, surely it would be a medicine? To me, an antidote is used to treat poisoning. And when the player uses it, it is to treat the Poison effect. And so it's my belief that the Ashen Blood is meant to be understood as an environmental toxin, likely mercury, which blood ministration exposes people to. I think this also explains 'Ashen' - grey like Ash, or like Mercury. There's also a potential link to Bone Ash here; mercury is often a toxic byproduct of cremation.
      I think the idea of it being something that suddenly appeared separately from Blood Ministration is a fabrication by the church. 'its not our blood that is making you sick, you've caught Ashen Blood'

    I personally think the Mensis ritual stars REALLY early
    Like I'm talking, before the corse of Kos.
    First of all the corpses we find are really damn old, and then, as stated in other videos, Micolash prays to Kos. If we discard the "Kos was meant to be Ebrietas in these lines" theory, Micolash could very well just have died in the physical world by starvation but still kept on living in mind and spirit for years and years in the nightmare. He has the highest possible arcane stat in the game after all and he has WAAAAAY too much insight; he is almost close to being a Great One himself in terms of Arcane (the Japanese term used for eldricht truth, in this case) power. When slain, he questions wether he would remember things when waking up, perhaps not realising his body has long been dead.
    I believe the dream has been ongoing for decades, possibly almost a century, since the dawn of the healing church and all the way to "today", when Kos was still revered as a God and Rom seen as a protector of humanity's sanity or a gatekeeper for the arcane truth. Micolash despised God for not letting him into Eden and bite the apple, and thus began his quest to bring Eden, the dream, to humanity, not realising it was Hell, the nightmare, that would slowly corrupt humanity and himself

    That is the best and most comprehensive look at Bloodborne timeline. What an amazing job, absolutely fantastic. About Rom tho: Remembering that offering Annelise's flesh to the Rom-like altar in Ebrieta's arena, seem to have an effect on time itself, considering that, maybe that altar was used before for other purposes, or even Rom have some sort of power regarding time. Having that said, all the positions in which you placed Rom in this timeline are entirely possible and maybe even in more than one timeframe. Also in my opinion the School of Mensis foundation was probably closer to the Choir's foundation, is just an impression that I've had according with the flow of the events in the game.

    I think Rom is a baby/child, so probably didn't head down into the Labyrinth. I believe there's an interview where Miyazaki says so, or at least something that suggests it. And it makes sense since Rom was successfully turned into a Great One, and the Choir later replicates the strategy of using babies and children to create higher beings, with them also seeing success to some degree.

      @Bruh Momenter This makes sense. there are a lot of parallels between this game and Beyond the Black Rainbow (fixation with eyes, pale giants, mutants with enlarged heads, apparently abandoned institute searching for eldritch dimensions through science and magic, collapsed pupils, etc.)that a lot of people don't talk about, to the point I believe Miyazaki took some inspiration during productions, both in storytelling and lore.
      In this movie there's this institute working to ascend human consciousness, and its founder, Dr. Mercurio (quicksilver) Arborea uses his daughter in this experiment, turning her into a mute girl with powerful psionic powers. The Doctor is in a semi-delirious/alzhaimer state, hidden deep in the institute, while his assistant (his Lawrence) has taken control of the institute, hiding his more bestial state through pills and various apparatus (he is a completely bald human with collapsed pupils fuelled by animalistic instincts) which in the end drives his experiments towards the daughter and other failed patients. Also there's a scene where the main bad guy gets a psychic phone call and it's the backwards commercial of "Rom the Space knight".

    Great video! I wonder about the discovery of Ebrietas. I would think it was before Gehrman was sent to the Hunter's Dream. My understanding is that Gehrman entered the Dream along with the Doll so he could be with Maria again in one way or another. It would make sense then that Maria was already dead before this point. However it is implied that Maria was present at the Research Hall to tend to the patients there. One of the main purposes of the Research Hall was to create emissaries that could communicate with Ebrietas. Therefore it makes sense to me that Gehrman had not entered the Hunters Dream until some time after the discovery of Ebrietas, the events of the Research Hall, and Maria's death (suicide?).
    Just my thoughts, I could totally be missing something. I find everything to do with Ebrietas and the Upper Cathedral Ward to be so fascinating.

    I think the alpha builds do a lot to shed the original vision of blood borne and help explain the way the old hunters dlc made up for some gaps they wrote themselves into.
    If our Ebrietas was originally named Kos, then kos being over the alter of dispair makes which features the body of rom in the waking world perhaps? Or even if it's just a statue/ alter, the connections between micolash's cries/ prayers requesting kos bequeath eyes upon mensis as was done for rom are much clearer. Now then speaking of mensis and micolash, Ebrietas was presumably the original name of the moon presence which is why the augur of ebrietas was the omen of inebriation of blood and the curse. So mensis is still crying out to to one god but in their madness evoking a nightmare and another god entirely. (Great ones)

    It is kinda weird that we have a voice line saying it was Gherman. Isn't the most famous theory that Maria stole the blood and took it to Cainhurst? Maybe Gherman took the blame for his student.
    And if both Gherman and Lawrence left, the question is why, was it the same reason? Was it the blood which was shown to them by Maria?

    So dope dude and so glad people are still digging into this!
    Something I came across from a commenter somewhere that felt like a potentially enormous idea was that Gherman was the father of Orphan, and extrapolating on that I thought maybe the Moon Presence is punishing this dude for killing his and a Great One’s child by keeping him in the Dream guiding hunters to kill a Great One’s child perpetually.
    Could this possibly fit with your jams?

    One question I have: If the Mensis ritual and the creation of the Nightmare of Mensis happened the same night as the rest of the game, why are all of the cage-headed Mensis scholars desiccated to the point that they appear mummified? Surely that would take longer than a single (even supernaturally weird) night?

    I have a bit of a theory on Alfred's background and what happened to the Executioners post-Cainhurst. This presumes that the Healing Church didn't have one dedicated Hunter organization, which is supported by the White Hunters being essentially their clergy members as well as trained hunters, the Black Hunters specifically targeting people who were suspected of having the Scourge but before they showed outward signs, the Chior being the Arcanists and cosmic researchers, the Prospectors being their Dungeon Divers, and them seemingly employing the Old Hunters, likely prior to/while developing their own Hunter factions based on Gherman's combat style. In this case the Executioners would have been one of those factions, led by Logarias.
    After Cainhurst, the Executioners would have lost many of their men, as well as their leader who stayed behind to guard Queen Annalise. I see two roads the faction could have take after this: either they disbanded, some retiring while others joined other Church Hunter factions, or they stayed as a faction within the Church but were much smaller and less of a force than they were previously. Both would explain why Alfred is the only Executioner we see during the game (outside of Queen Killer). In either case, I see Alfred as someone who either is descended from an Executioner, and was told by one of his parents/grandparents about the Executioners and Vilebloods (either because they were surviving members or their ancestors were and the story has been passed down through the family, depending on how long ago the raid actually happened), and was indoctrinated as one as a kid. Then, when he became a Church Hunter, he donned his family's Executioner attire in place of the usual Church Garb, though still used the standard Church equipment outside of when he killed Annalise. He also could have met a retired Executioner, or one who joined a separate faction that he also joined, and learned about the Executioners then, or when he became a Church Hunter he joined the small Executioner faction that was still around and became fanatical during that time, the alternate equipment possibly being for practicality reasons. If there were still an Executioner faction around even if all of the raid members had long since passed, the old Executioners could have entered into a legendary status for them, and those who join are just as fanatical as Alfred.
    In short overall I see him as being someone who was somehow mentored by a previous Executioner, or a descendent of one, and either joined the small Executioner faction that remained or donned their gear when joining the Church. It's possible that he simply read about them and they became this idealized group within his head, and that's what caused him to become so fanatical, but I don't think that's the only option. It would better explain why he didn't understand why Logarias was watching guard and that killing Annalise wouldn't actually do any good, though.

    If maria is related to the "vilebloods" / blood kin (of pthumeru), that's a connection right there for why Gehrman would take blood "back" to cainhurst.
    The betrayal would be seeking the use of blood and going to a blood queen to harness it and it ties into the fear the old blood adage that they shouldn't use the blood.

    There’s a conundrum that I’d never thought of - we assume Gherman must have taken the blood to Cainhurst before the fishing hamlet because we know Maria was at the hamlet. But also why would Gherman and Maria have been welcomed by Bergenwyrth to something so significant when they were considered traitors? I suppose it’s possible Gherman knew Maria and the people of Cainhurst before then but just didn’t take the blood to them until later, but to move it back any further means he would’ve taken the blood there and then Maria would’ve ditched him very shortly thereafter. Neither of which is impossible, but neither feels quite right.

    • @LastProtagonist

      Like I said in the video, the betrayal could have been the events of the Hamlet. It's also worth mentioning the Hamlet Priest curses the scholars of Byrgenwerth for being "blood-crazed fiends." But these kind of inconsistencies are part of why I dislike some of the story of the DLC and would have preferred more stuff connected to Annalise and Cainhurst.

The fishing hamlet massacre seems to have happened fairly early, but that means Kos cursed and trapped all hunters in a nightmare before a lot of other events happened? So Gerhman used the Kos fetus to summon an elder god at the old workshop, or did Laurence? According to Sin & Sophie, Laurence took Annalise’s baby but I … (my head bursts w/ phantasms)

    The runes seem to be visual symbolic representations of urges. Carryl was able to transcribe the inhuman utterings of great ones possibly just oedon possibly many- but I think that is going on is for example the beast rune is sort of what we see in gascoigne, that blood drunk prey drive kind of desire. Carryl was able to transcribe that into a logo of sorts and brand it onto a sheet of leather or something with the rune tool. The hunter stares at it and visualizes it sort of like they put in some headphones with a certain type of song to get in a certain mood lol
    It would make sense that once the intoxicating blood consumption took over the first rune to come about would be about the desire for it.

    regarding the chalice dungeons, I always thought they were all put in chronological order, not as in different territories of Phtumeru with Isz as the oldest, existing before or during the early days of Pthumeru, before they were a kingdom, and the first Pthumeru chalice as the earliest (showing some of Old Yharnam architecture in some rooms). Loran seemed a vassal state of Pthumeru but inhabited by humans after their fall, using blood without knowing of his dangers and without care, basically mutating every generation and ignoring the curse of blood. I've always seen it similar to Roman Empire with extreme corruption and hedonism as the source of its downfall.

    Has anyone ever done any theorizing on gaining beasthood and frenzy resist when you spend insight? The more you spend, the more beasthood and frenzy resistance is gained and it's indicated on the screen.
    I know it's pretty simple from a mechanical standpoint but it would still be interesting to see a cohesive video on it.

    • @solsubridens
      @solsubridens 2 года назад +1

      I feel like that's fairly simple to explain when it comes to the lore of the game, and the concepts it shows. For me, it's a situation of "the more you know, the more conscious one is of it's surroundings". The item you used to gain insight is, indeed, madmans knowledge, and even though it makes you aware of your surroundings, and gets one closer to the eldrich truth, it still is the knowledge of a madman, a wise but rampant and uncontrolled way of seeing the world, hence why it makes one more suceptible to beasthood and frenzy if too much knowledge is gained. When there's over abundance of outside stimuli in that sort of paranoid way of seeing the world, one could become more suceptible to it, hence why beasthood and frenzy affects Hunters with higher levels of insight. This is all my theory, but there are some ways to back it up (the corpses surrounding the Mensis Brain for example, and them holding Great Ones Knowledge).

      I could write a whole essay on this one if I had the time. There is an intrinsic dichotomy between body and mind, between the will and the phsyical world, that Bloodborne loves to play with. And a core element of the story, what the game calls the Eldritch truth or the Arcane is the ability of a mind, or a strong enough will, to make the physical world malleable. To reshape it at whim.
      It's interesting to note that beasthood is affected by your insight stat, but the reverse isn't true. Gaining or losing insight has the inverse affect on your beasthood stat, but simply changing your beasthood stat has no impact on your insight.
      For Frenzy, I would argue that insight is effectively a measure of your character's footprint in the psychic or astral plane. A realm without any physical aspect, but one of pure consciousness. When your insight is zero, you are purely a creature of the physical world and are immune to psychic attack. However, the more insight you possess, the larger your presence in that other plane, the more vulnerable you become to such attacks. Frenzy would be a purely psychic attack, with no direct physical component. The Frenzy gauge filling would represent the point at which the tether between your mind and your physical body allows the attack to have a cataclysmic impact on your physical form.
      This is also why some enemies will use different attacks when you have sufficient insight. Particularly the Church Servants. When you cross the insight threshold that allows them to detect you in the psychic plane then realize that they can hurt you in that way as well, and no longer resort to their purely physical attacks.
      I look at beasthood as being a measure of the blood's effect and it's ability to override your conscious will. Higher beasthood means your body is being more strongly affected by the arcane power of the blood, and thus more susceptible to the beastly transformation that most Yharnamites undergo. In fact, I believe that the beast transformation is simply the arcane power of the blood, making the physical world malleable, being uncontrolled by a strong enough will and bending to base instinct and impulse. The reason beasthood is affected by insight is because the larger your presence in astral plane, the less tethered to your purely physical form your mind is, and thus the impact of the blood's power is reduced. Think of it as your form (human body or bestial body) impacting your function. You are what you look like, in Bloodborne's physical world. But your form has less impact on your level of consciousness the higher your insight.
      (As an aside, the form describes function logic also makes for an interesting discussion about the Doll. Does she act like she does because that's who she is? Or is the will animating the Doll compelled to behave as it does because it has taken the Doll's physical form? I would argue the latter, but that's for another topic altogether.)

      @@juanausensi499 You are correct! The particular phenomenon I'm referencing is when you spend insight at the insight merchant, it causes your beasthood to go up. The more you spend, the more the bar fills right after the transaction. You also see your frenzy bar show up, denoting the increased frenzy resistance due to the lower insight. I think our friend above outlines what's happening well. I know it's connected to how lower insight increases frenzy resistance and also makes the player more "animal", being less exposed to the maddening truth. It's just a small piece of a larger discussion, but I've just never seen anyone elaborate on it or fit it into an existing video about insight vs. Beasthood
