    “Eric grinned and his teeth glittered… ‘Do you think we don’t know you were riding her?’… Connell paused and took another drag on his cigarette. This was probably the most horrifying thing Eric could have said to him, not because it ended his life, but because it didn’t. He knew then that the secret for which he had sacrificed his happiness and the happiness of another person had been trivial all along, and worthless. He and Marianne could have walked down the school corridors hand in hand, and with what consequence? Nothing really. No one cared”

    The issue is Connell had no sense of self while at school. His whole self worth is tied into how others see him. He says at one point about trying on 100 different versions of himself. He lacks maturity. Because so much is left unsaid or what is said is open to interpretation or often misinterpretation a lot of unnecessary hurt is caused on both sides. The ambiguous nature of their relationship in school means neither want to openly state how they feel for fear the other doesn't feel as deeply. The whole debs episode was a real crappy move on Connell's part. Lorraine totally called him out on that. Proper order! Growing up is painful. He finally realises what he has lost at the debs. We see his total devastation. We can empathise because who hasn't made major and minor blunders as teenagers (and beyond)!

      I dont see him as immature, he was a deep and sensitive boy even in highschool. He simply felt uncomfortable about being in a serious relationship in public, not just uncomfortable but probably serious anxiety. The reasons probably had something to do with his absent father. He was mature enough to declare his love to her and treated her with tenderness in their private times together.

    • @mitziirish9539
      @mitziirish9539 3 года назад +67

      @@dailybls I think it’s possible to have depth but still lack the maturity to express it in a healthy way - Connell saw the way Marianne was treated, and he knew that if he asked her to the debs, he might have been roped-in with his friends’ mistreatment of her. I think that whilst his anxiety and the social pressure he felt had a huge role to play in his early treatment of Marianne, had he been a little mature, he would’ve been able to recognise that her feelings mattered more than his friends’ perception of him. He knew that his decision could hurt her, and he made it anyway (out of worry for himself) because he didn’t have the maturity and life-experience to be able to view the bigger picture.

      I think you missed the point where he said it would be awkward, and she says no one need know. He made his position clear, and gave her the choice.
      You also seem to miss the fact his mother worked for her family, and his friend asked if his mother came running when Marianne rang a bell. In fairness, given the situation, I can understand why he might wish to keep that quiet, if he was seen as at her beck and call.
      But I go back to my initial point - the guy stated his position and she was the one who made clear she understood and accepted.
      Of course, in hindsight, it was shockingly bad treatment of her, and he realised as soon as mother spelled it out, as evidenced by his many texts to Marianne and asking his mum how she was.
      Youth is full of such misjudgements, misunderstandings and just plain screwing up, isn't it?

      It's not so much about the way she looks but about the way she thinks, what she values and her social class. To acknowledge he liked her would be to acknowledge that he is a much more serious and intellectual person than what is 'acceptable' within his peer group, who are from a more 'working class' background. His connection to Marianne is physical but it is also highly intellectual, which is the embarrassing part for him. The reason she is cool at University is because she becomes surrounded by people from her own social class, it's also why Connell feels extremely isolated there. One of the major themes, if not the major theme of this story is social class and how it impacts our lives.

      @@iradennison3764 while I agree with everything both of you said I think that they are not the pertinent reason he didn't want to be seen with her. He had an absentee father who would have left a huge mark on his persona. He, thought talent intellect and some luck probably made himself the popular kid in school even though he was poor and didn't have a father in a small town. He had probably invested so much in his persona and his social position he was not prepared to jeopardize it even for love. As for Marianne being bullied she gave back as much as she took and always hit back in a more clever and humorous way. I think most of the bullies were afraid of her actually like the guy who said terrible insults about her but as connell said if he had any chance with you he never would have spoken to you like that. This is a great scene; one of the key moments in the whole series, and superbly acted. I remember - the first time I saw it - wanting Connell to give a fuller account of himself, to explain himself more to Marianne as well as apologise. Something I’ve thought for a long time is that no one can explicitly teach you to have self-esteem in relationships; you have to learn to value yourself. So many people secretly seem to think they are worthless deep down. It’s very strange and very sad. At university, Marianne has learned to value herself more, so she would no longer let Connell treat her as he had at school. And tells him so. For his part, Connell shows us that it’s not a good idea to let your view of yourself and your values be determined by what others think of you. It’s easier said than done, but you have to stand on your own feet and hold your own ground.

    I loved it this so much. We all have been there. Most of the time we make assumptions of what will happen, of what others think about us while the reality is more bearable than all those scenarios in our minds. Both of them are deep thinkers. On the one hand we have an insecure Marianne who just seeks of validation. She wants to be wanted and her mood depends completely on him. She isn't strong enough to communicate her feelings. She doesn't want to be a burden to him or to annoy him. In other words she doesn't want to be TOO MUCH. As women we learn to not express our feelings to the maximun cause of fear of sounding needy or vulnerable. On the other hand Connel is passive. He doesn't understand the debth of his feelings, but he feels it deeply. He makes efforts to express his feelings unlike Marianne that's why he backs up cause he feels it's a one sided love. Also he admires her a lot but in a way he feels inferior to her (maybe also because of their backgrounds too). Feels like he is dissociating often. He doesn't want to lose the familiar things around him and is afraid of being judged. He doesn't really fit in in his current life in high school. He is just surviving and getting by.
    The acting was on point. I felt every single emotion.

      I also think the forgiveness for the act was given too freely. And the assured way in which he said "thanks" to receiving the forgiveness, no pause, no surprise, like he knew that of COURSE he would be forgiven. I'm sure he learned from it, did the necessary reflection, but I think she still deserved more reconciliation for the act. He should have said, "is there anything I can ever do to make it up to you?", a statement with not only acknowledgement of harm and recognition of the necessity to amend it, but also the humility to recognize that he may simply not be forgiven. Because honestly... it would have been entirely understandable if she couldn't forgive him, if that act just lodged too deeply in her to ever be something he could have any part in healing. Sometimes, the harm we cause is permanent - or else that it might be out of our hands to heal. Sometimes, we have gone too far down a path to turn around.

    The book - and this incredibly well-acted scene - does a remarkably fine job of showing empathy to where both characters are in their maturity and mental makeup at the time. Not excusing poor behavior, simply illuminating Connell’s insecurities and shortsightedness by allowing the reader to view his disgust at his former mindset and immaturity.
    It’s poignant, partially because probably most of us (to some degree) were much too caught up in what others’ opinion of us might be and how we were perceived in high school. I cringe at some of the things I thought mattered then lol.
    But this is acted amazingly well, by both characters, and brings to life the empathy shown by marianne and by the author to Connell for realizing and verbalizing his past immaturity.

    • @CYB3RMYG
      @CYB3RMYG 9 месяцев назад +2

      It was a miscommunication. It was showed in a subtle way: when they broke up the second time Connell had nowhere to go in Dublin and he was afraid to ask Marianne if he could live with her, he probably thought he would be a burden to her and instead of asking her to stay he tried to “test” her by saying “I think you should see other people” probably to see her reaction, if she really wanted to stay with him or not and she says “yeah, I think so” and you can see that she has a bit of a defensive/annoyed tone. Connell takes that as a sign that she doesn’t really wants to stay with him exclusively so they broke up and that’s clearly want he didn’t wanted because it shows him trying to hold back tears before leaving her house, so he really understood that she didn’t liked him enough/the way he liked her. However, in later episode (I think) it shows Marianne remembering this incident and in her mind it echoes Connell saying “I think WE should see other people”. Which implies that she understood that he wanted to broke up with her without having the balls to say it directly. It was an AWFUL miscommunication, the fact that both of them just said “yeah” and accepted without even wanting to discuss the why’s of their decisions was the reason this happened.

    Lorraine is great but the bar is soo low. Who cares if connnell invites marriane to a stupid dance. I simply wouldn’t let my son invite girls over to his room period. If he can’t have the maturity to be in a serious committed relationship then he is not mature enough to be intimate. I feel like some parents lack complete control over who their children date or how they treat others.

  • @alliona502
    @alliona502 Год назад +1

    I honestly think what he did wasn’t as bad as people made it out to be.
    The show is called normal people, he was a very normal young boy. He was shy and cared abt his popularity like most boys his age. When he started his relationship with Marianne it was on the basis that it was a secret relationship. He was open to Marianne abt his feelings and thoughts and told her that he asked Rachel to the debs as a friend. Yeah it’s kinda a shitty to do, but when you are that age, school life is like a completely different life and you are constantly worried abt what others would think of you or being an outcast when in reality nobody actually cares, but you don’t gain the sense of maturity until you leave school.
    I know plenty of people who had boyfriends outside of school but when they were at school they didn’t even interact with each other.
    Some friend groups just don’t mesh, like he never felt like he fit in with her friends. She didn’t like his friends. I think it’s better to just detach, and let him and his friends and her have hers. Without them trying to include the other in their circle. They shld hang out without the friends, and then get friends as a couple while they can both maintain their friendship with their own friend group.
    At school he was with his friend group and she didn’t fit in, in uni he didn’t fit in with her friend group. The debs was a school dance, he was going with his friends and Marianne wouldn’t of fitted in.

    A beautiful video as befits a stunningly beautiful and charismatic woman. Daisy E-J, a women who doesn't need makeup to look her gorgeously exquisite best. She's so Incredibly appealing, attractive, intelligent and exceptionally talented . An amazing women.
    You see Daisy, you should drop that utterly inept and amateurish drip Varey. The Daily Mail headline of 27 Jan 2021, says it all. It reads: Paul Mescal insists 'there wasn't a huge amount of acting going on' in his realistic sex scenes with Normal People co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones because he 'liked her very much' The ‘chemistry wasn’t just superb acting, it was real! He continues: You know when you have "it",' of having chemistry with his scene partner. 'I knew when I was with Daisy that it felt natural, that there wasn't a huge amount of "acting" going on. 'Gushing about his co-star, Paul added: 'When you have that chemistry it makes it so much fun! Daisy and I liked each other very much' So that's probably the root of it: having a similar sense of humour, thinking about the world in a relatively similar way and being able to communicate all that.'
