One of the best scenes of the series. The chemistry is electric - her eyes, her voice when she says “it’s not” and “what’s not to like about you?” So good.
I love this scene - it made me cry even though it wasn't overtly emotional. It captures so beautifully the pain when you encounter a past love, someone who broke your heart, and you have to sit there pretending like everything is okay, making small talk, when deep down all you want to do is talk about the way things were. It's a combination of heartache but also happiness to see that person again. Daisy and Paul captured this so well.

I met a past love (it was transient and intense) while she was briefly visiting my home town. It was unexpected for both of us. We hadn't spoken for years after she broke it off. I had been angry, as I felt she messed me around, she sent me an equally angry response and we went about separate lives. Neither of us married or had kids but I found a new relationship that has been wonderful, more than I could have ever hoped for. A decade later she sends me a text message asking "how I am?" Apologising for her mail. I responded that neither of us behaved well and we are better than the people who sent those emails. She agreed and then friended me on FB. I'm in a new relationship and that was obvious to her. After some initial relief I didn't think much of the exchange. Nothing happened until we met coincidentally one Saturday morning. She approached me, clearly upset. I remember smiling and instinctively opened my arms for a hug. She embraced me, near whispered "I'm sorry" and gently kissed me on the lips. It was fleeting without any need to reciprocate. She then said "I have to go.. But I'm staying at... " and hurried off. I pondered what had happened and imagined closure, whatever that meant, would be impossible or illusory. I haven't met her since. The present and future have more than enough to occupy me besides dwelling on past hypotheticals. We both knew in a few moments that affection remained, or that's how I remember it. I haven't thought about that morning for years, until I read your comment. I suspect that a spark remains for many people for their past loves but it's distant light reaching us from a star that burned out when the romance ended. Star gazing can be diverting but we are earth-bound creatures and we need to put most of our attentions on the ground in front of us to avoid tripping up. The older I get the more comfortable I am with the realisation of those hypotheticals being left in the past or occasional wry smiles at the heavens.

I LOVED how Marianne blossomed in college and how Connell struggled a bit but finds his footing later and remembers it as a perfect time in his life. I related to this so much and it was just one of the many reasons I truly loved this series and why it has stayed with me.

I love how in the beginning she's trying to act "cool" on the outside. However, as the conversation progresses she begins to open up and expose her true emotions. Subtle but really well done, what a show.
One of the most underrated scenes was afterwards when Theresa asks Marianne for Connell's number and she says "what's not to like about him"... I still can't shake this book it's so bloody good.
Why I love normal people so much is because I literally lived this, and it's so relatable; The awkward conversations the fights, the breakdowns. It's just so good to find someone that's encapsulated all of this soo damn well.
Lol tell me about it - this series EXACTLY depicts my last relationship…right down to the fact that the two of us are both from the the same town in the west of Ireland, both of us going to college in Dublin, falling in love in college and serious miscommunication throughout our relationship haha
Many times Marianne subtly (or maybe not so subtly) checks Connell out with her eyes. She conveys that hunger, that lust in her eyes. Connell has such a sweet persona, someone who isn't that sure of himself yet who is undeniably sweet and kind.

Agree and im irish and near died when i heard her english accent 😂 i assumed she was irish so great to hear someone do it this way, without completly overdoing it and sounding like their singing. Annoys me everytime 😂
This show made me realise as a 30 year old woman that I need to be more vulnerable and intimate. Even the sex scenes were so beautiful because it showed how their connection climaxed into this special thing. I have no idea where I was when I was 17 or 22, but I wasn't there with an open heart as these two characters. That is for sure. This show means a lot to me. It showed me what I've been missing all along and I am grateful for that.
I felt exactly the same. It made me cry thinking about how defensive and guarded I was in those scenarios at that age, and even now in my 30’s I seriously struggle with that level of vulnerability. Maybe it’s just about meeting someone who makes you feel truly seen though, which I suspect is sheer luck.

Having the right person to explore this level of intimacy with is another piece of the puzzle and I’m sure it works healing on parts of us that we’re not able to access by ourselves. I think I’ve always either sabotaged such relationships because in a way, deep down, I unconsciously felt unworthy of being loved, or I never gave them a chance to getting close to me. This show really inspires me to open up more. I wish you all the love and healing in the world 🤍

I didn't get the chance to let my guard down at that age too for other reasons, and it's something I've often mourned as I got older. I finally had someone fall in love with me back at 25 & for sure the whole thing was a distaster, but it's so intoxicating to fall in love with someone. Here's hoping we can learn how to let our guards down with the right people, as everyone deserves a little romance when they're open to it :)
I'm glad that they don't try to act like Marianne wasn't attractive during her school days, as she was always pretty, which Connell even acknowledges. She just puts more of an effort into her appearance while at college, like many people who find their "calling" in college. 🎓😊💗
It's hard to put alot of effort into your appearance when you're still at school especially when you have to wear a uniform, follow strict rules and not allowed to wear makeup and jewellery.
But in the original book she wasn't attractive throughout. And connell's type was unconventional looking girls I kinda wish they went with the same thing in the adaptation but then again daisy did an amazing job with her acting

@@anitsiklauri7471 I've read the book and in it only Rooney describes her physical in great detail. Hollow cheeks, round and undefined jawline, crooked teeth basically a very 'normal' face. Her unkept style made her weirder in school. Connell even feels shame finding her attractive and then goes on to explore how his type is so. And the reason she gets popular in college is not because she's attractive physically but because she's super smart, popular and started putting effort in dressing herself.
A brilliant scene within a brilliant drama in which both the characters are simply amazing. The real chemistry between the two lead actors makes the series so incredibly moving.
I binge watched this three days ago and can't get it out of my head. I felt like a voyeur. The acting was so good that I completely entered their world. Devastatingly brilliant. And my God, Daisy has a supernatural talent for revealing a character's mind just in her eyes. Now I'm reading the book and watching it again. With some care. I don't want to let the characters go. The last time I felt like this was when I read "Brideshead Revisited" about forty years ago. Absolutely superb and very moving. And it's unhinged me in ways I can't really articulate yet.
It's kinda hilarious and ironic for me. In my head i used to think about some weird fanfic with a story similarly like this and yet there's actually a series that really capture about 95% of the story that i kept thinking in my head lol. Oh my goodness, god bless everyone who worked on this show

I couldn’t let them go, I watched it again. Now I’m watching clips. It really sticks with you. Their performances were some of the best I’ve seen.

I’ve just finished this all 12 episodes in a day. I’ve never really considered movies or shows works of art but this was a work of art, the mood, the tone, the characters, dialogue etc. I never want to stop knowing about Marianne and Connell; how they end, I need this story until their old age. This kind of brilliance and beauty in tv only comes once in a while and I’m literally going to recommend this show to everyone I know. Everything about this show was comforting and I can’t wait to read the book. I’m so glad bbc i player had this on because what a gem this show was.

The "I don't know" comment is a common response when us Irish people are caught on the hop/panic. It means that I don't know what to say, not an answer to her question.
Geez, such great actors. I always thought that Paul Mescal with his sudden physical nuances was amazing but after rewatching this scene I realized how amazing is Daisy as well. In the way she anticipates in the dialogue and how - with her voice tones changes - unselfishly assists Paul in his delivery is amazing. Looking forward to see them again soon in another project.
when i watch this show i feel like im intruding in their private moment, ESPECIALLY during their intimate scenes. its almost like im watching them behind a closet or smth lol
The show would have been a lot shorter if only 1. Connell had asked Marianne to the Debs 2. Connell had asked her if he could move in after he lost his job 3. Either one had been honest about their feelings for each other at the same time

First scene I ever see of this show. Just randomly suggested by RUclips. And yet, I feel like I know everything about these two, their past, their possible futures... so gripping. Awesome scene, great acting, incredible writing.
Incredible show. So well captures love and human communication, and the lack of it. Wonder how better peoples lives would be if we were taught how to communicate early on in life. Once you know, it’s late in life. Love is about chemistry, but long love is about communication.
One of the best scenes in the show. It just feels so... intimate and real. Also, it introduced me to dogwood blossom, which became one of my favorite songs.
this scene hits different when you have a complicated (& miscommunicated) situationship and you run into each other a while later at a function and theres so much you want to talk about but youre incapable of actually going there and its awkward and achy but also you feel so safe to be talking to them again yes im projecting
I am so late to this and only watching now. What is profound is the dialogue and the space and intermittent silence given to it. The accent is a given but the intonation, wow! Just superb writing, directing but the two leads and his Ma ( Sarah Greene) just another level. Mind blown 👏🏾
They have the perfect chemistry and they are in love but it's better if they just don't see each other. They have a very complicated and painful relationship
I wasn't in love with this series during my first watch of it in 2020, but I think I might re-visit it someday just to feel the emotions all over again.
Absolutely love what the costume designers did for Marianne's transformation in this scene. Her whole look embodies Marianne Faithful - a famous model, singer, and Mick Jagger's girlfriend for some time. I suppose it highlights how Marianne has crafted herself a new personality and has become celebrity-like within her university.
The series has maaany scenes I love, I mean how it could be so perfect, I wonder If it is sth I don't like. Here of course I love chemistry which I think it is not playing because it's not even possible so realistic. The way Marianne say "sorry' that Connel break up with Rachel or saying Connel is telepathic and then ' in bed you mean'. And of course "it's not" with her face and pain and sorrow. And what I absolutely love about these scene is when Marianne says " I know, it's classic me, came to college and pretty' omg her face and everythinggg, and she's tryin to be funny with this conversation but in fact there are so many feelings in, an excitement, relief, joy, pain, sorrow. And the way he feels insecure right now in college, and she's is confident. I might think that when she said "probably why I am good in it' she seems malignant for what he treated her in school. When Connell sayin he's not in type of girls he dont even know with the feeling he just want to be in Marianne's type, and of course when Marianne says "What's not to like about you?" with the meaning she loves him and she misses him with so much pain. WOW
I think Gareth later on regretted inviting Connell to his party. Certainly Marianne felt that old spark reignited when she saw Connell. They try to be friends but in the end realize they could never be 'just friends' cause they had too much passion between them.

The reason this scene is so interesting to me is the undertones of disliking himself for his past actions are showing pretty strongly here and you can see that she picks up on it when she said "What's not to like about you." That question was a tension release for the conversation.
Ive heard people say they dont like the series, I watched it anyway. I'm so happy I ignored them, this is the realest series ive ever watched. The emotions are perfectly displayed by these two amazing actors ❤

I've worked in film and TV for 30 years and I've never seen chemistry like that on screen before. Casting is the hardest thing to get right.

Interesting. I am 60 & I am sure well outside the target demographic for this show but I, too, loved it & was deeply affected by it.

when i watch this show i feel like im intruding in their private moment, ESPECIALLY during their intimate scenes. its almost like im watching them behind a closet or smth lol

Yeah I feels like I’m sneaking on them too. I don’t know how they do that but also the natural way they talk to each other makes it that way too
The show would have been a lot shorter if only
1. Connell had asked Marianne to the Debs
2. Connell had asked her if he could move in after he lost his job
3. Either one had been honest about their feelings for each other at the same time
but that's life though 🤷♀️

one of the things I love most about this scene is the "hmm" call and response and reaffirmation interwoven through their conversation. really captures how deeply interwined they are

I'm amazed by how the most generic boy-meets-girl-etc plot can be made compelling with great acting and cinematography.
There are whole scenes I can quote from memory; there's something naturalistic and refreshing in how Sally Rooney writes dialogue.

Incredible show. So well captures love and human communication, and the lack of it. Wonder how better peoples lives would be if we were taught how to communicate early on in life. Once you know, it’s late in life. Love is about chemistry, but long love is about communication.
One of the best scenes in the show. It just feels so... intimate and real. Also, it introduced me to dogwood blossom, which became one of my favorite songs.

this scene hits different when you have a complicated (& miscommunicated) situationship and you run into each other a while later at a function and theres so much you want to talk about but youre incapable of actually going there and its awkward and achy but also you feel so safe to be talking to them again

The last 'I don't know' is very powerful. I relate to it a lot, the really not knowing why.
I am so late to this and only watching now. What is profound is the dialogue and the space and intermittent silence given to it. The accent is a given but the intonation, wow! Just superb writing, directing but the two leads and his Ma ( Sarah Greene) just another level. Mind blown 👏🏾
The entire show is just beautiful. I finished the series a month ago but I have not stopped thinking about it. It is so powerful and emotional.

Absolutely love what the costume designers did for Marianne's transformation in this scene. Her whole look embodies Marianne Faithful - a famous model, singer, and Mick Jagger's girlfriend for some time. I suppose it highlights how Marianne has crafted herself a new personality and has become celebrity-like within her university.

The series has maaany scenes I love, I mean how it could be so perfect, I wonder If it is sth I don't like. Here of course I love chemistry which I think it is not playing because it's not even possible so realistic. The way Marianne say "sorry' that Connel break up with Rachel or saying Connel is telepathic and then ' in bed you mean'. And of course "it's not" with her face and pain and sorrow. And what I absolutely love about these scene is when Marianne says " I know, it's classic me, came to college and pretty' omg her face and everythinggg, and she's tryin to be funny with this conversation but in fact there are so many feelings in, an excitement, relief, joy, pain, sorrow. And the way he feels insecure right now in college, and she's is confident. I might think that when she said "probably why I am good in it' she seems malignant for what he treated her in school. When Connell sayin he's not in type of girls he dont even know with the feeling he just want to be in Marianne's type, and of course when Marianne says "What's not to like about you?" with the meaning she loves him and she misses him with so much pain. WOW

I just found this show tonight and it should’ve came with a warning label.
I think Gareth later on regretted inviting Connell to his party. Certainly Marianne felt that old spark reignited when she saw Connell. They try to be friends but in the end realize they could never be 'just friends' cause they had too much passion between them.

The reason this scene is so interesting to me is the undertones of disliking himself for his past actions are showing pretty strongly here and you can see that she picks up on it when she said "What's not to like about you." That question was a tension release for the conversation.
God the ending of the series crushed me, but also make me angry, but not angry.....Wish there were a year two, dammit...
