They’re afraid yet so unafraid of each other.
They display insecure attachment issues, and very poor communication. Both of them have unresolved childhood traumas and wounding. And that affects how they show up in their relationships. They both need therapy.
I loved how Connell went from being the big star on campus at school and Marianne the awkward teen and flipping the narrative when they attend Trinity.
Also frustrated that he did not recognise how much he destroyed her at school. She adored him and he never got it until the very end
I think a better word for ‘recognise’ would be ‘acknowledge’. He feels that what he did was terrible (end of Deb night episode) but can’t do more than say sorry (study reconciliation scene)
i never saw her portrayal as awkward, more arrogant and angry. she came across as snobby and elitist, hiding behind bookishness and wealth to protect her strong emotions from social rejection or hurt. i was the same in HS, abused at home.
But she wasnt the star either because, unfortunately she still was mean to herself and let men treat her like garbage. she didnt have THAT MANY friends and in the end pooped out of social life being a drama queen. it's sad.

Daisy E-J has been nominated for the 2021 Golden Globes for her role as Marianne in Normal People according to the Evening Standard of 03/02/21. [ Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology or TV Movie] About time too! Excellent news; well done Daisy for your brilliant performance. I'm full or admiration for such an extraordinary lady and for her parents who so lovingly and carefully moulded her phenomenally delightful character and allowed her to pursue her dream of becoming a wonderfully talented actress and a 'complete' individual.
However, although Paul Mescal was snubbed he it absolutely delighted that Daisy, his gorgeous 'friend' has finally received the recognition she so richly deserves. What an amazing 'real life' couple they'd make.
Just beautiful!! Nice story, for many people, in thaughts, going back in time. Loved Daisy and Paul as couple, the chemestry and love between them was very beautiful.
@@morse1883I agree! I feel like because he is the male on the show so much attention has been on Paul which is great- he’s wonderful. But Daisy is just as talented and I feel isn’t being given the same spotlight. Even the director Lenny Abrahamson is constantly talking about Paul and not as much about Daisy… which is odd because they are both so completely talented.
This is one of the few cases where the TV show is soooooo much better than the book. Here, we actually see more of their nuanced emotions unlike in the book where everything was a little bit stale and hidden, like a jewel buried on a mountain of sand. You feel the coarseness of the surface, you know that there is a deeper layer of emotion, but you're not fully convinced that it's there because of this intentional obstructive view of the third person omniscient narrator, who like Marianne and Connell, cannot communicate well.
I saw the tv series and thought it was the best show ever. I bought the book a few months ago, but I havent brought myself to read it yet xx

couldn't agree more. and it's fascinating - the book definitely reads more like connell's story than marianne's, whereas the show is more balanced. fascinating also because sally rooney contributed significantly to the tv show as well. i wonder what it was like for her to view her own book from this re-imagined perspective.
i don't think i could ever get over this show. truly, it has touched me in ways i could only imagine. such a no-brainer how one could conveyed such feelings into a show.
Rooney's prose requires a lot from the reader and some readers are not up for it; Many readers who disliked the book loved the series because Lenny Abrahamson has done the heavy lifting and read it for them.

Normal People is one of my favourite ever shows. I think that can be attributed to the fact that Connell is a splitting image of me, the plot genuinely matches my personal life perfectly, from popularity in school, to anxiety and even the suicide of a best friend.

you know a show/film is good when even a video essay can make you cry
after reading the book and watching the show in two days, i can say this was an absolutely wonderful adaptation. in some ways i think it’s even better than the book. i think just in the way paul and daisy complimented each other and brought the lines of the story to the surface, rich with emotion made it better. after feeling that the book ended a bit abruptly, i loved the ending in the show so much more. the ending is just utterly exceptional-
The book and show helped put into words things i have felt for ages without knowing how to say them.

So much impressive analysis...I will admit that this show really challenged my expectations at good level...At every scene I expect something extraordinary and it turns out totally different. That's what I liked about it. It is so so subtle and simple but too deep.. ❤️❤️

Superb essay. I was really sceptical of an on screen adaption but as you've described, the show managed to brilliantly capture the core of the novel.

I've watched so many analyses, edits and monologues and they are a great addition to the show and the book keeping the whole thing to the forefront. Yours is superb!
Sally Rooney's comment that Marianne and Connell feel so real (and exciting and beautiful and frustrating and heart breaking) is to my mind what sets it apart. I doubt I'll ever stop returning to it trying to get my head around the entire piece. Many thanks for your insights.

Thought I was done crying, and then I see this. So, so good.
I enjoyed the book and the series. I am a bit older than probably most people on here, but I just wanted to ask if anyone else was reminded of "The Way We Were" from 1973. It's cheesy Hollywood film with Barbara Streisand and Robert Redford, but plot wise it felt similar. Like Marianne, Streisand's character is a politically-minded outcast in college, who falls inn love with the quiet, college jock that wants to be a writer and some scenes feel very similar.
Thank you for making this video, I have only just now watched normal people, and I found the ending so heart breaking I’ve been sad for days. This video really helped me get closure (??) from the series, made me look at the ending in a happier light.

@@yayalough3249 I mean it’s definitely not a raw as it was a month ago, it still makes me very sad, I’m a bit of a romantic and it makes me really sad watching two people struggle not only to be together but to work out who they are as individuals, and when they eventually do, their future together isn’t guaranteed, I hope that makes sense

The fact that their connection is so deep and that they have had such a formative affect on both of them should be enough because it signifies how meaningful they have been in each others lives. But I’m still hoping they remain in each other’s lives. And I don’t think they could not be in each other’s lives without it being a romantic relationship.
I always wondered what Marianne meant when she replied to Connell that it wasn’t normal for him to feel he could read her thoughts. I was unsure if she was trying to make him feel foolish because she was still hurt by him. But I see she was only reconfirming that what they shared and still share is rare and runs deep.
I love the beauty in the quote from this video:
“Simplicity and directness can be so intensely emotive,” and it’s so true of Connell and Marianne’s exchanges throughout the years.

Can someone please explain why these two characters decide not to be together in the very end? If they helped each other grow so significantly as he would beings and they love and care for one another, then why are they not together in the end?
they explained towards the end..he just kept inadvertently hurting her. he never understood her or what she needed, and she was awful at communicating it.
@@IhaytFukkingsocialmediaI don’t think this is it. I think they’ve changed each other so much that they’re almost different people by the end of the story. They’re both now confident and don’t need each other in the way that they used to

Agreed, I found this unwatchable and gave it up when they were in France or wherever they were.
It made me feel uncomfortable, grossed out and awful
I did not like normal people. It was way too sad for me, and I like dramas and sad stuff. But just the way the loneliness was portrayed was too much, there was no hope. The only hope is two lonely people being dependent on each other because of their individual loneliness. I don't get how someone could say this is romantic? It just seemed toxic

The end resolve all the problem. Marianne choose to follow what she wants, finally have her own life and not dependant to a man. Connell believe in himself and go. They know they will probably never see each other again or never be like it was before, but they finally choose to let go. we felt like there was no hope because that’s how they felt with their relationship/in their life, at the end there is finally hope !
That’s how i saw normal people. The hard times to becoming an adult while struggling with personal problem (abusive family, suicide, mental health..)and finding comfort in a person, only one. It’s toxic yeah (mostly Marianne who searching to be possessed by someone) but this is all they have at this moment. Connell says something like « I wouldn’t be here without you » at the end, there was a lot of bad, but they survive these years together and finally get it ; its time to let go
I think its not necessarily about dependence although I could see how it could look that way, I think its about how people can transform one another's lives for the better which is why at the end, it pretty ends with them being okay with living separate lives knowing that their bond is forever

@@evanae1995 I understand your interpretation but I didn't understood the end that way. For me, Connell and Marianne couldn't be together before because they had to find their way and to struggle with many problems (social for Connell, familial for Marianne). At the end, they have finally resolved their problems. Connell is going to leave Ireland, indeed, and Marianne will stay because she finally can appreciate being in her country. But they realize that their bond is really special and that they can't be for long with other peoples (remember what they say about their intimacy, the sex with other people has never been so good because they deeply love each other...). So yes they will not be in the same country, it will be hard and maybe they will be with other people but it is implied that they will be reunited later. They can take more risks now because they know how their connection and their love is strong. It is impossible for them being separated all their life... I was a bit surprised at first by this end but finally I find it beautiful : yes, they will be separated geographically but each one can not live without the other, it is obvious.
