I have made all of the different tutorials using placemats. Pioneer Woman is my favorite, I have dishes, bowls, crockpots, etc and now pouches. I will be giving them out for Christmas. Thank you for the tutorials.
Lorrie: I love your versatile bag creations. Your instructions are terrific. I just made 2 of these cosmetic bags. However, I used the 1” wide nylon webbing in a coordinated color. I also added a 9” x 3 1/4” cardboard piece that I covered with a coordinated fabric that I lined with the washable vinyl. I’m so thrilled with the end product. My granddaughters will be getting these for Christmas filled with inexpensive cosmetics, since they like to play dress up. Thanks again for your tutorial.
Love how simple and easy you teach. My sister was visiting and her travel bags, one busted and the other didnt fit all her stuff. In 20 minutes i whipped a couple of your bags for her. I love this one and cant wait to try it
Susan Forman be sure and note the measurements in the video description. The handle interfacing should be cut to 2” x 14” - not 4” x 14” as stated in video
Hi Lorrie, Great Pouch. This one is my favorite so far out of the placemats. You could stitch your handle on first, with the same measurements, on the right side of course, before attaching the Zipper. Just as a little hint to make life slightly easier for attaching the handle. It's far enough out of the way, to not get caught. :)
What a unique way to make a bag from an existing quilted fabric. Since I am looking to make a train case style makeup bag and have some fabric remnants, I will make up a "placemat" first to do this pattern! Wonderful tutorial and so inspiring to see your creativity so willingly shared with others.
Great video, thanks Lorrie. The only thing I would caution you is the use of Pilot frixion pens on the RIGHT SIDE of any fabric. Despite the fact that an iron seems to make the line disappear, once the item gets cold (or even washed), a "ghost" line can reappear--and it's permanent. Even Pilot advise against using their pens on fabric. Better to use a pencil, or a ceramic (white) mechanical pencil for marking the right sides of fabric. This will wash out. ~Diana from Toronto (Canada) p.s. hope I can find these placemats at our WalMarts ... somehow I doubt it. I'll have to remember to hit a WalMart and Target next time I cross-border shop in NY State in future. Great ideas!
Made my first placemat project from your tutorial yesterday. It turned out great. Hadn't really sewn much in years, but your videos are so clear. So proud of "me" . lol Thanks you for all you do here.
I have made two of the placemat pouches and love them! Two of my girls have snatched them from me! I will definitely be making this one! They are easy to make. Love your tutorials and the bags!
Lorrie, You are excellent at presenting the information in your tutorials! I love that basically the same size mat can be used for a number of styles of bags. I'm having a blast experimenting with fabrics. Thanks for the idea. These bags are a hit with friends and family. I've had several orders for them!
i used two of the placemats and made a mat for under my sewing machine with one of them folded and sewn to create pouches that drop down in front of the machine for my scissors, etc. The Pioneer Woman quilted mats are quite nice with polyurethane foam inside of them. I think I will use some to make Christmas gifts of what Lorrie is showing!!
Sandi Booth be sure and note the measurements in the video description. The handle interfacing should be cut to 2” x 14” - not 4” x 14” as stated in video
Well done, Lorrie! I came across your box pouch tutorial quite by accident but decided I HAD to try it! LOVED how it turned out. My future daughter-in-law loved it so much that she wants me to make them for all of her bridesmaids! I'm sending this video to her so she can see all of her options! Thanks again!!!

So fun Lorrie! Great tutorial. Have placemat...will make! Took one of the bags I made for a door prize last night, and it was well received!!! Thanks for sharing your genius with us!
I've been looking for a craft like this! These could make a great dopp kit with different material. Thanks! Edit: I did it! I made one and wow--Lori you are a great teacher. I've been thinking about this for 3 years and now I feel so confident with sewing. Thank you!
I love, love, love your tutorials . I have made five placemat bags. And now I have started making the ones with handles. Thank you so much for sharing your talents . You do a terrific job at explaining what you're doing.
I made this with the PW wavy -edge, flower placemat, teal side out. Matched the white with teal polka dot fabric for the handle and added cute little bows at the handle edges. Thanks for the easy instructions, especially since this was my first zipper. I'm looking forward to completing more of your projects.
Love these ideas. I will never look at a placemat the same way again. I plan to make my grandson portfolio type pouch for coloring books and crayons with a Velcro closure. Need to locate kids placemats.
Ok. That's it. I'm buying a new sewing machine. Mine is from 1986 and is completely frustrating and weighs a ton. I've been collecting placemats and I'm going to just breakdown and take the plunge. I love your ideas and you make it seem so simple! Thanks for sharing!
Love this idea. When I'm boxing a corner as you did on this bag, I turn the extra fabric flat with the sides or top and bottom and tack the end down, which adds a little more structure to the bag and helps keep the corners square. It does create some little pockets that might collect crumbs or something, so you could also sew the edges down in a triangle to prevent that.
Lorrie, I bought about 3different designs of PW placemats. I made those cute little wallets, and a couple pouches! Love them! Love the way you go in detail and explain everything. Go teacher! I’ll be making this cute little pouch for my niece. Love the vinyl inside to wipe clean! Keep on showing different ideas with the placemats. Love all of them! Thank You!
Lorrie, this bag is almost exactly what I've been searching for, but I'm begging a requested video tutorial. Could you make something like this that has a wrap around zipper so the bag opens completely? I'm a huge fan, thank you for all your real-time tutorials!

Thank you, Lorrie, for these easy to follow, step-by-step tutorials. I am a visual learner and your videos are a great help to me! Can't wait to see your next project! :)
I love your tutorials, they are easy to follow. I get the wonder tape for future projects. I think you have an awesome relaxing voice. I made the first pouch a few times, this bag will be a gift to my youngest daughter.
Too too adorable. My Wal-Mart does not sell these either. But I have enough stash to make some of these adorable placemats. Extra work, but I think well worth it. Great for gifts. Thank you for sharing.
"WE" just finished our lunch pouch! Boy I wish had known how to do this when my kids were little.!!!! Thanks for going just slow enough for this old woman to keep up! Looking forward to #11 because..why not?!
I made this and used a denim placemat for a dopp kit for my brother. I used part of a vintage tie for the handle. It turned out pretty good but I did break a needle.
I used Heat & Bond Lite and the handle still turned out sturdy. Didn't have "double sided tape" so I used Scor-tape. lol Hey...it worked. Bag still turned out really well. I was worried about boxing the corners so close to the zipper, but it worked. Thanks, Lorrie. This is my favorite of the bags. I gotta say though, next time I'm leaving out the vinyl. My sewing machine hated that stuff. It wants to stick to the bottom of the machine and not budge. What a pain! Gotta go clean my needle of Scor-tape.
Really good tutorial and great useful project. I've been making placemat totes for some time so I like more ideas! I made this one, too, but with extra body for the interior. I opened my placemat about 1/4" from the right lining side and placed an ultra-firm double-sided iron-on facing (Pellon Peltex 72F) between the outer and lining layers so it will hold more weight without sagging. Also, it looked like the zipper was installed to open from the right to the left. The photo of the finished project looked correct, with the zip opening from left to right. I almost pinned it on that way but caught myself.
Thank you, Lorrie! I love love LOVE the box-corner template! Also, you have given me courage to try sewing zippers again. I have not sewn a zipper since about 1978 when it was all about a million pins and a lot of hope! LOL
Kenna Presley be sure and note the measurements in the video description. The handle interfacing should be cut to 2” x 14” - not 4” x 14” as stated in video
I love your corner "template"! I went further and created a center line on mine. It will line up the seam and be perfectly centered creating a perfect box corner. Also, I clip the seam thru the place mat binding so the seam lies flat.
I went to a retreat in the Villages, Florida in February (my sister lives there). I showed one of the pouches at the retreat and my sister tells me all the girls are making them now!
Absolutely perfect project and excellent step by step instructions...thank you SO much! Could you possibly do one on the three zippered pouch that’s going around?
You are killing me!! LOL I had two of these placemats and I've made the pouch (ditty bag) and I made the basket. I have to find more placemats!!! Could you use quilted material instead if you have it?? I'm enjoying all of these projects!
I have a hard time finding Wonder tape but guess i will have to order it online I already made one of your bags and i loved it. Since i am a newbie this was easy to do and you didnt have to worry about linings and interfacing etc. Thank you for these videos.. I am going to make more using pioneer women place mats
I loved the placemat tutorial. I learned so much. I'm going to watch again to write down the name of tape you used great idea for zippers and loved the templet for corners

Hi Lorrie, I bet you're getting such great feedback because I don't think I've seen a better teaching tutorial on RUclips EVER! I've watched hundreds. Yours is so comprehensive and easy to understand even things that could send a beginner running for the hills you explain so well in such a perfect amount of time. Thank you, well should I think you...hmmm this is now added to my project journal LOL
Per your suggestion I went to WalMart. The placemats they had were terrible and not at all suitable. So - I went to Bed-Bath-Beyond and found some for $1.99. Using my 20% off made it way less than that! It's an easy project. My one suggestion would be to cut off the zipper before sewing.
Just finished my tote. Thanks for the great instruction. My ONLY mistake is that I grabbed a black pen instead of my Frixion pen to make the 3” sew line on the handle! Oops! Maybe I’ll embroidery a little something over the black line. 🤣
I have made all of the different tutorials using placemats. Pioneer Woman is my favorite, I have dishes, bowls, crockpots, etc and now pouches. I will be giving them out for Christmas. Thank you for the tutorials.

Just finished my tote. Thanks for the great instruction. My ONLY mistake is that I grabbed a black pen instead of my Frixion pen to make the 3” sew line on the handle! Oops! Maybe I’ll embroidery a little something over the black line. 🤣
