I get together with 3 high school friends every year and make little gifts for each. This year I’ll make these little bags and fill them with a few other little things. Love this project.
You’re the first person that I’ve seen demonstrating corners that does it the way I do. I learned the square technique almost 20 years ago and love using it! Thanks for the quick and easy video!
Never thought of trying a placemat like that, I like that a lot. I made gauge blocks a couple years ago for making bags like this, cut the squares out from ice cream bucket lids, I made some .75" all the way to 3.5" for fast work with some tailor's chalk for marking these squares quickly and accurately to cut back from the seam allowance lines.
Thank You! I know this tutorial is older, but I made one last night following another ladies tutorial and because I am HUGE beginner to anything sewing, when she failed to mention (or i didnt hear) that I needed to open the zipper before stitching the sides, Imagine my surprise when I sewed the bag clean shut. Haha! I had to rip the seams to open the zipper to turn. My zipper is really wonky too, she didnt pin her zipper but I should have!! I appreciate those details you added to your video. I’m off to try, try again!
I try not to leave out important details because of my "beginner" subscribers. I am so glad you found it to be helpful. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment!!!
Saw this video earlier in the week. Went to Home Goods and found a 4pk of Martha Stewart placements on sale for $10, found a couple zippers in my stash… and made this bag. Too cute and super easy. Your instructions were very good. I like cutting out the corners …. Much easier to manuever and sew! I may be making these to sell. Wow. Thanks again.
I've been doing this for several years! I started with placemats but it's a little difficult to find the double sided ones that are more heavy duty than single sided ones! I also find that purchasing a yard and a half of double sided quilted fabric you can get 4 place mats for less than 4 place mats! I also like to make my bags a little larger at times so I sometimes can only get 3 bags out of a yard and a half! These are so fun to make! I have made them for all if my friends & they love them! They work vest if double sided! I also measure my bags from the fabric & add 2 to 4 inches wider for some of my friends that wanted larger bags. I measure & then cut them in half! It makes it so much easier to put in the zipper & with a overlooking machine they come out very nice & neatly made! Plus it makes the zipper installation look very professional! I even put pockets on the inside of some of the bags I make & it's easier to do when cut in half then stitched on the overlocking machine gives it a nice finish! I always like to add things to my projects like inside & out side pockets & inside dividers! They sell well when there is a variety!
Cats&Company at Walmart, there are some Pioneer Woman quilted squares pattern .... there is also a blouse and white.... I think the placemats art $3.00
Your zipper placemat is awesome can’t wait to go to store and make this ,while sewing l made over 1OO face masks for my daughters first responders work in Boston . Thanks
@@mywithallmyart Man, you made such a great find! :D You've inspired me not only to make the zippered pouch, but a matching vest, too. I've found some very similar fabrics of hers, I really love that black background; I never knew she did one with black background. Whoohoo! Thanks so much for your videos!
@@lornanorris1363 Wheeee! I like places like Goodwill, sometimes a yard sale etc. and find things like designer sheets, bedspreads, curtains, etc. to cut up. :D I once found some 80s Laura Ashley drapes to cut up, sew ew things and resell, lol :)
I needed 6, and made 4 before I ran out of time @ Christmas, I put my daughters and granddaughters gifts inside as gift wrap, they loved them, I am back at it now to make the 2 I still “owe” the others. Since I don’t know anything about sewing and simply follow along, is there any trick to lining up the 2 sides of the zippers to the placemat edge evenly? I line it all up, pin and then SLOWLY sew. They are always wonky!. I have picked them apart so many times I am ruining the placemats. I end up sewing further in on the sides to try to hide the screwups…. I had better luck making pouches the the “regular” way, but these placemat ones are soooo cute! I know it can be done, you do it so well!~. Thanks again
To line up the zipper: close the zipper at least a little bit. Then, position the placemat and pin in place. Reopen the zipper to make it easier to stitch. I hope this helps.
The square corners guarantee they will all be perfect. Thanks so much. I have never subscribed so don’t know how I end up receiving the free patterns. I am Judith Kurtovich
Judith, I have looked at my email subscriber list using just your name and I don't see you. I don't know how you are getting patterns either. If it comes in an email just unsubscribe. Thanks for watching!!! :)
Just watched your bag video and love this bag! I’ve watched a couple dozen of similar bags & this is my favorite. Love this material colors & pattern is beautiful. Thanks so much! 😃
Gladys, I got the placements at an antique store. They are not antique, though. The vendor had 2 sets of 4 and I only bought 1 set. Sad face! I went back recently and of course the other set was gone! They are Vera Wang - retired! So glad you liked the project!
These exact placemats are not available. I just happened onto them at an antique mall. I keep an eye out for placemats at Goodwill or Ross. I sure wish I could find more like these.
You can find quilted placemats at any home store. I've been making these and using the pioneer woman brand from WalMart. They are $3.47 each and make adorable bags.
What a great idea, a quilted placemat! And already lined. I love this idea. Thanks for the great tutorial.
You are so welcome!
