  • Had a chance to play with the new Shimano SLX DC reel and I explain setting it up, walk through the reel and test the casting distance on each setting. Pretty impressive for $179 USD.

      @@ASSASSIN70707 both reels have the same dc system. There is not much of a difference between the two. I think the curado dc has a slightly better drag system and maybe one more bearing.

      If that's what they want it for absolutely. Not a better reel on the market for skipping jigs and soft plastics when using setting 4

  • @slyfox720
    @slyfox720 4 года назад +1

    So I had a Curado DC and I loved it, but the only thing that I didnt like about it is you had to adjust the tension knob pretty tight to for the DC braking system to work....this made it impossible for me to pitch lures, maybe I was doing something wrong?

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  4 года назад +1

      You shouldn't have to tighten it that much unless you ant to use it without putting your the on the spool when the bait lands... adjust to spool tensioner the way the video shows, where its only tight enough to stop side to side spool movement, everything else should be adjusted by the dial, 1-4

    i'm looking at the 8-2-1 gear ratio and all i'm wanting to do is skip docks with it and fish frogs set on #4 so i don't have to worry about backlash...i don't need it for anything else, i have other rods and reels..will this work for that or is there still going to be a need for me to thumb control skipping it?

  • @Chris-fh8uh

    If you set this reel up just a tad past removing all the spool movement just as directions say to do and it still bird nests when it hits the ground or water but not as bad as a normal baitcaster would. But if you set the spool tension so the bait drops slow but steady, then it works better . Anyone else with this issue ?

    • @Chris-fh8uh

      I’m using braid and on setting #2 on the dial . #4 works great for skipping though !!

      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  4 года назад +1

      @@Chris-fh8uh The number 2 setting isn't thumbs free, nor is the number 3 setting. You still need to use your thumb, the advantage is line management and casting efficiency under these settings

      @chip6954 4 года назад +1

      Glad to see your post, was wondering if anyone else noticed this - totally agree, Im still experimenting but tightening according to instructions vs the traditional way is night & day as far as tendency to bird nest, especially with line/lures at the lighter/bottom of the DC’s tolerances . If the directions are correct, than my reel may be defective ...truth be told, at this point, I like & trust my XT model more.

    • @Chris-fh8uh
      @Chris-fh8uh 4 года назад +1

      Chip Underwood It’s a good reel for sure but I don’t think it’s worth the price and definitely doesn’t do what it’s claimed to do 100% . It’s very misleading , especially to maybe a new angler. It does help casting for sure and skipping. Yes I’ve played with it quite a bit too and I’ve found that e instructions are not accurate for a birds nest free cast and landing and traditional setup doesn’t give full distance casting so I’ve been right in the middle of both setting and happy with it but still have to thumb it right before the lure hits the water , which is fine. I did write shimano and they said I’m over thinking it 🤦‍♂️ when I asked about setup and why the instructions are written as they are.

    why 65# braid ? i run 30# max quatro braid on my curado dc the 65 # dumps the line off the real faster and keeps the spool speed up at the middle to end of cast. making it easier to cast without blowing up. try this with 30 # .

    dumb question for you, i have limited experience with baitcaster reels. when should you apply your thumb in the casting

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  2 года назад

      just before the bait hits the water is the best time to stop the spool. A super light touch on the spool while the bait is flying can also help especially when casting into the wind... they call it an "educated Thumb" and practice will make perfect

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  4 года назад

      It will work really well for that. If you want to pitch around super light baits and rigs I would recommend going to an MGL spool model though.

    So I have a question when setting up the reel, it seems that you have to tighten up the reel tight enough to make sure that the dc coils will be activated but it seems to be tight enough that the lure does not drop...and for me I cant seem to flip being its so tight? Any advice?

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  4 года назад

      You only need to tighten the spool tensioner to remove side to side play which still leaves it plenty loose in free spool.

      The problem is that you have way more line on your reels he has 80lb and with about 45 yards witch is only 135 ft and on your reels you have 150 yards the problem is that you have so much line that your reel can’t get to and he does not have his reel spool all the way I hope this helps also he is using a larger and more heavy class lure
