You can adjust the settings to where it doesnt backlash as often or as bad, but you can never get it as good as a dc reel
I know this is a bit old now, but a couple of questions came to mind when listening to you explain spooling up. 1. Put it on as tight as possible - agree, however the 'working part of the line', it almost doesn't matter, to a point, how tight the working part is, as an example, as soon as you throw out say a soft swimbait, which provides very little resistance to the line, as you reel it back on its gonna be lose compared to the rest of the line, this part of the line, the first 100ft lets say, will never go back on time after time as tight as can be. 2. If the 4 brake modes are 4 for skipping baits or casting into the wind etc and 2 is for braid, what happens if you are skipping baits into the wind with braided line? 2, or 4 setting?
Thanks for making this video. I get my line spooled at a local shop. Its good for a few casts, then starts bird nesting. Guess its not tight enough. Ill try what you said.

Great job explaining the setup. I think 90% of the time people have backlash and major nests, is all because they didn’t either take the time to set it up properly or just didn’t know how to set it up. One thing I never thought of and is a great idea, was tying off a clip and running out 50 yards to crank back in with resistance. That alone seems like it will really help out even farther after you dialed in the settings. Nice job, I’m sure you helped a bunch of people out there struggling with bait casters
I don’t use my DC reels as often as MGLs but my Met DC always comes out on 20mph+ windy days. I thought about the new conquest dc but the weight of those round reels is a little high for my taste. Thanks for the quality uploads man. A lot of good beginner info but also some hidden gems mixed in.

Great video! I have the non DC SLX and I freakin LOVE IT! I am planning a purchase of this DC version very soon. Man you got this right on about using the tape on the spool to start the line. Those Shimano spools are so slippery. Is that 30lb braid you have on that? I usually spool most of my reels with 20 - 30 lb Power Pro for the kind of fishing I do out here in Genessee County with about a 15 foot leader of 10lb fluorocarbon. Works for me anyway. See ya on the lakes!
Great video! I’m almost exclusively using Curado DC’s . I get laughed at some but no backlash and stupid proof! I can throw a baitcaster but why not just fish and have no worries? Love them
Haha see that’s what I mean, why do guys hate when you can just fish and not worry. I think it has something to do with the sound and guys who still want to bash all things Shimano. Their loss our gain! Thanks for watching David!
Great video, what test braid do you have on that reel bud? Just got mine today. Im new to baitcasters, this is my fisrt. Got some new braid to on 30 lbs and 50. What you advise i spool it with. South Fl freahwater fishing. Peacocks, large and small mouth ... etc. Whatver bites. Got the combo with tbe 7'2 mhf rod. Mine is the xg. Thanks
Nice video............just picked up a Shimano SLX DC at Sportsman's Warehouse (online) for $159.99. Been using an old Curado for years, looking forward to trying this out/something new.
I put my line on an old beach casting reel attached to an old rod first. I tie the rod to a post and set the old reel drag to the tension I want for loading my baitcaster. Simple to then just wind the line onto my baitcaster at a set tension.
As I am new to Bait casting reels the Shimano DC Reel . What size and weight line should I be using. ? Your Video is the best I have seen on you tube. Right now I have on spider wire 20Lb Stealth Smooth 10lb test Dia. and it seems to be to light. Your suggestions will be very helpful. In 2 and 3 I am only getting about 30 to 40 feet per cast. Jim C
I have a Curado DC and an SLX DC and neither one will stop like that without thumbing them. Only if I crank the tension knob up more than what Shimano instructions say to do. Line seems tight everything as well. Weird how some of them will and others won’t.
Mate I have had this for about 2 months now... I used to keep adjusting the tension knob for lure/bait weight like your supposed too for a non DC reel... But as you mentioned this is wrong. Doing it does allow you to cast without thumbing the end but it will limit the distance. In the guide book it clearly says to only adjust the tension knob until there is no more side to side action/knocking sound and to leave it like that for everything to maximize the DC function. It works great and cast further like this but you will still have to thumb the end (Just before it hits water) for all settings but 4 on the Brakes. The only way I can see you are not thumbing the ending on other settings is that you are tightening the tension knob a fair bit past the side to side/knocking
+VICKB thanks for watching and the comment. I have a very special magic that allows me to cast fat and not have to thumb it. I call it my Fishhook Sauce! Haha but for real, it’s okay to play with the tension knob to dial it in so it has no play side to side and allows you to make a bomb cast without thumbing. It may only require you to adjust a millimeter to get what you need, not cranking it down. Good luck and you’ll find the exact spot that works for you.
Thanks for the guide, these kinds of reels ( both dc and regular baitcasters for that matter) are not mega common here in Norway, as predator fishing is not as common as in the united states of bassmerica so good to find some info on these, they exist here, but most tackle shops i go to have maybe 4 or 5 of these kinds of reels, market isnt big enough, heck country isnt big enough for them to have a large selection of baitcasters, so alot of the staff don't have that much expirience with them, are they good with heavier stuff? was thinking about getting a heavier set up for some larger pike lures that can get rather heavy up in the 40-80g range 1.4-2.8 ounce in freedom land kinda weight, very uncomfortable to throw that with a spinning reel.
I want to know on the scorpion DC reel if I set the adjustment to W or A and I don't put my thumb on the spool it is impossible to have a blacslash Thank You
I’m having trouble I set mine to just enough where there is no slop but I still get a bird nest when I don’t thumb the spool I have to tighten the tention more so I don’t get any
I just picked up the slx dc and i use a backer and then my braid will what i spooled it with was on my othe just slx so it looked like it filled it nice will i quickly noticed that you can not put a backer on that reel because there was not enough braid i casted it down to my backer and then some so i had to redo it and just put enough backer on so the braid dont slip and fill the rest with braid i could not believe how far that reel casts
Haha yeah that’s one reason why I don’t run backing with these reels, you’ll cast a mile and be down into your backing. Thanks for watching and the comment man
The whole tension on the line is overkill considering whenever you cast and retrieve the line won't be as tight unless you hold your line everytime you reel in. I get that you want to do it the very first time you spool your line but after that very first cast your line won't be as tight anymore.
I just picked up a slx dc. I love it, but I get some over run when it hits the water. It seems super free, it casts a very long way. I’m very familiar with baitcasters but this is my first dc. I feel like I have to tighten the spool tension well beyond the “spool slack take up” to slow the spool down. What do you recommend? Loosening it to the point the spool doesn’t click side to side seems just too loose. It over runs a bunch when the lure hits, it’ll even do it as a jig or Texas rig is sinking to the bottom. This reel is almost ‘too’ smooth haha
I just got this reel and I have the exactly same issue. I have used normal baitcasters in the past but with this SLX I've had to tighten the spool tensioner WAY down, otherwise I get birds nesting when the lure hits the water. Did you figure out any insights into this since you made this comment? Would appreciate it!
I have a carado dc, with 20lb braid, wound it pretty tight, filled it full, set the break to 3 and have the spool tension so it doesn't move side to side but still will slow fall with .25oz weight. It will backlash like a mother if I weren't thumbing it. What you are doing is voodoo to me. If it weren't on video I wouldn't believe you.
rogue109 brake mode 3 is for fluorocarbon line and does not work well with braid or mono, also when you press the thumb bar/spool release, make sure that your line is not tangled around the last eyelet of your rod, had that happen to me multiple times Hope this helps (Edit:spelling)
@@gabrielandrade8056 mines still backlashed until i tightened up the tension knob but honestly out of pure instinct i still thumb it but not as much like a regular reel
I find that I still need to thumb my curado dc before the lure hits the water with the tension set to eliminate the side to side play or else the scissors are coming out. That is using setting 2 with 30 lb braid
@@FishhookTerry power pro to a small leader. And mono backing so no chance that the braid is slipping. I just thumb it before the bait hits the water and it's no big deal, but just always thought it was funny that I still had to thumb it after seeing everyone say no thumb at all.
And there’s nothing wrong with having to use some thumb to be on the safe side. I bet if you continued to tweak the spool tension you’d get it to no thumb but again that’s no big deal. But keep slaying with that awesome reel, thanks again Dan!
Good afternoon sir thank you so much for the info, any additional wisdom would be appreciated I'm getting my first baitcaster the Scorpion 21 DC 150XG paired w/ the Curado casting A, medium power 86 in. I've never used a baitcaster before, I consider myself a fairly proficient openface spincaster, I will be using it in New York primarily for Bass, Trout, and Pike (hopefully). I'm going to be using 15 lb power pro braid with 20 lb fluorocarbon leader. Tried to read reviews to pick out what would be best for me as a complete novice in baitcasting, what do you think of this setup please, thank you.
Had mine spooled at fleet farm cause I was feeling lazy lol smh I should have told these ladies to just forget it as soon as they were like how do we.. n then she busted out the screwdriver and put it through the line spool zero tension on it.. I was like.. yea thanks haha so I got in the boat and put a nice big lure on and let the line all the way out and kept the boat moving about 3-4mph and reeled it in and got it spooled noice and tight and oh baby this reel BOMBS lures or you can flick it skip it light bait heavy bait love this reel
I got a normal slx from bass pro yesterday and it's nice! Also picked up some of the BOGO fluorocarbon and some baits. It was VERY odd being on of maybe 10 people in the store though.
Just commented on another video you made about this reel. Another question, you say to keep the micro chip "charged" it uses the casting of the reel? If you don't fish regularly and the reel sits, does that mean the next time you fish the micro chip won't work? I'm looking to spend around $170-$200. I have two older Abu's and have had no issues with them but I hear the newer ones have issues with the side plates coming off. My dad uses Calcuttas and likes Shimano. There's way too many choices. Any advice would be nice.
Thanks Steve, I almost always use 50lb PowerPro. I find that works for me on baitcasters for just about application I need in Michigan. From jigs to frogs works great for me. Thanks for watching!
I tried using braid on one of my baitcasters. After using it for a while I went to cast and my line caught and the lure snapped off and went sailing through the air. After a couple times of losing 5 dollar lures I went back to Fluorocarbon or Mono.
lol thats not the braids fault. Braid actually makes stronger knots than fluoro or mono just because it doesnt slip as much. Youre just tying poor knots or the line is old or frayed.
Hope this video helped you with your DC reels. Let me know what other rod or reel videos you’d like to see!
It’s the 7’2” Mag Heavy, it’s going to be a killer topwater and frog rod

Haha thank you and will do! 👊🏻🎣
New subscriber just purchased SLX dc hg reel thanks for the tips can't wait to use it for pike here in Scotland tight lines 🎣🎣🏴🏴🏴👍
Thanks for the info! Love the hat
When you say weightless worm how much does the worm weigh in grams/ounces?
What braid pound test where you using?
Why are the setting numbers on shimano curado dc difficult to see. Thanks
The whole tension on the line is overkill considering whenever you cast and retrieve the line won't be as tight unless you hold your line everytime you reel in. I get that you want to do it the very first time you spool your line but after that very first cast your line won't be as tight anymore.
He’s only talking about the spool up so what is ur point?
lol u may cast and it gets loose duh but u don’t want loose line more than u can cast don’t want loose line under ur casting distance
I think it helps keep line memory
If it weren't on video I wouldn't believe you.
rogue109 brake mode 3 is for fluorocarbon line and does not work well with braid or mono, also when you press the thumb bar/spool release, make sure that your line is not tangled around the last eyelet of your rod, had that happen to me multiple times
Hope this helps
(Edit:spelling)
@@gabrielandrade8056 mines still backlashed until i tightened up the tension knob but honestly out of pure instinct i still thumb it but not as much like a regular reel
Setting 2 is for braid and mono
Awesome vid. Got a lot of good info out of it
brake #3 is for fluorocarbon #2 is mono and braid.
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO SUPER USEFUL, WHAT ROD ARE YOU PARING WITH THE SLXDC ?
love your content fishhook! kill'n it!
Just bought one because of your review. Thanks 👍
+Johnny2gunz916 thanks man! You will really enjoy it!!
Bless sir, you throwing a weightless worm on 50lb braid?
I find that I still need to thumb my curado dc before the lure hits the water with the tension set to eliminate the side to side play or else the scissors are coming out. That is using setting 2 with 30 lb braid
What type of line are you running on it?
@@FishhookTerry power pro to a small leader. And mono backing so no chance that the braid is slipping. I just thumb it before the bait hits the water and it's no big deal, but just always thought it was funny that I still had to thumb it after seeing everyone say no thumb at all.
And there’s nothing wrong with having to use some thumb to be on the safe side. I bet if you continued to tweak the spool tension you’d get it to no thumb but again that’s no big deal. But keep slaying with that awesome reel, thanks again Dan!
30 lb braid is the diameter of 8lb test mono or flouro. There is your problem....
Hi what lb braid are you using? What brand? Tieing right to lure or mono leader?
Great video. I have the SLX setup myself. Great step by step tips.
Love vid bruh however do you know where I can buy a dc scorpion??
I got mine coming Monday I can’t wait to try it out
would u recommend the sick stick or the dobyns fury to go with this reel gonna get one of them in the next couple days
Tried to read reviews to pick out what would be best for me as a complete novice in baitcasting, what do you think of this setup please, thank you.
so you don't have to put a lure on and push the button and let it drop like other baitcasters, am i correct on this.
Which dc reel fits for saltwater? Thanks
I just paired this up with a sixgill 7ft med fast. I hope it works.
Can you cast the whole spool out? I can get like 60 yds before birdnest happen using powerpro 20lb.
Just got an SLX DC 150 today and the spool has a hole drilled. So maybe they recently updated them?
Just got a couple SLX the other day like them so far.
You did braided line. Is the set up the same for other lines as well?
Does the star drag move a bit forward and backward a little if you lightly wiggle it on yours? Cuz idk if that’s normal or not
Had mine spooled at fleet farm cause I was feeling lazy lol smh I should have told these ladies to just forget it as soon as they were like how do we.. n then she busted out the screwdriver and put it through the line spool zero tension on it.. I was like.. yea thanks haha so I got in the boat and put a nice big lure on and let the line all the way out and kept the boat moving about 3-4mph and reeled it in and got it spooled noice and tight and oh baby this reel BOMBS lures or you can flick it skip it light bait heavy bait love this reel
boufht my first dc real yesterday, I hope it's as good as the metanium & the antares.
What if I use copolymer what number would that be
1st time viewing, nice video I just bought one of these reels. What kind of all purpose pole would you suggest pairing with this reel? I subscribed✊🏾
get the st croix bas mojo or daiwa tantula .. medium heavy
@@joshs3905 just bought mine feels good to know I already have a daiwa tatúla medium heavy sheesh can’t wait to get it today
What's up fishhook Jerry? I just picked that slx DC bad boy up today so now I'm watching videos to justify my purchase lol.
When running mono and fluoro what pound test do you recommend to function the best?
Zachary Pearson idk about this guy but I usually use 12 lb mono and 15 lb fluoro
Why cant i get bomber cast? I got 2Olb power pro braid on it with a 3/8oz jighead?
I got a normal slx from bass pro yesterday and it's nice! Also picked up some of the BOGO fluorocarbon and some baits. It was VERY odd being on of maybe 10 people in the store though.
Oh I’m sure it was strange, enjoy the reel and be safe man!
@@FishhookTerry I'm working in a grocery store so I'm doing everything I can
Fluffyguy958 yeah be very safe man, thank you for helping people get what they need during this.
@@FishhookTerry I'm just glad to have a job right now. I work in a bowling alley as a side thing and the pro shop is basically done for right now
2023 man looking at 2020 comments like wow, people got scammed hard with the covid circus
What line should I put on it and what rod
Just commented on another video you made about this reel. Another question, you say to keep the micro chip "charged" it uses the casting of the reel? If you don't fish regularly and the reel sits, does that mean the next time you fish the micro chip won't work? I'm looking to spend around $170-$200. I have two older Abu's and have had no issues with them but I hear the newer ones have issues with the side plates coming off. My dad uses Calcuttas and likes Shimano. There's way too many choices. Any advice would be nice.
What #braid do you recommend for these reels? Great video.
Thanks Steve, I almost always use 50lb PowerPro. I find that works for me on baitcasters for just about application I need in Michigan. From jigs to frogs works great for me. Thanks for watching!
Yes, 50lb. Power Pro.. I use yellow for 'line watching' bites.. worms, Senko, drop shot, flukes.. Yellow braid with a mono or fluorocarbon leader. 👍
40 lb suffix
I tried using braid on one of my baitcasters. After using it for a while I went to cast and my line caught and the lure snapped off and went sailing through the air. After a couple times of losing 5 dollar lures I went back to Fluorocarbon or Mono.
Tie a better knot
lol thats not the braids fault. Braid actually makes stronger knots than fluoro or mono just because it doesnt slip as much. Youre just tying poor knots or the line is old or frayed.
Palomar knot for braid
